i am also a n00b and made a selection between minix neo x7 and xtreamer SE3 yun may wifi.  ended up with minix x7 for these reasons

 - plays anything i throw at it (hardware and software update)
 - android and i'm familiar with it
 - android and minix community support (custom ROM/firmware) usually improved version of the stock
 - apps so it is not just player (games, torrent, music player, etc.)
 - makes my TV smart haha
 - tipid sa electricity
 - wired and wireless internet

on the negative side
 - may mga bugs and annoyances (pwede naman gawan ng paraan)
 - slow boot time
 - you must use a better control such as wireless keyboard and mouse

marami pang iba... overall i can say im getting far more than what i paid for!

anung firmware mo na kasama sa x7 mo?

if it's 005 dont upgrade except if you want to try stable beta 006c.  meron na 008 pero wala pa feedback.

flashDB maraming good feedbacks as Minix forum on the latest firmware (0101, version 008) for minix neo x7

na try mo na?  deal breaker yun sound glitch.  antay muna ko. ok naman yun 005. playing vids lang naman via mx player > passthrough audio to receiver. solve na.

simple lang yung set-up ko...wala akong na experience na audio problem....although different video apps acts differently and may be the cause of some problem, whether video or audio....

Updating the firmware gives us more benefit as the purpose of such update is usually to enhance the device and correct known glitches...should the update not be suitable for your needs then one can easily go back to the firmware that worked well....the firmware update takes about less than 5 mins in my experience (but that period does not include downloading the firmware itself)....

as to comparing the 3 NMTs (I have minix x7 and sidewinder 3), I go for minix since android base sya at marami ka pwedeng gawin besides watching movies.....my kids sometimes play android games using minix....
