Topic: onkyo sr806 vs NAD t744(AVR) + NAD T955(power amp)

I am just about ready to take the plunge (again) and upgrade my onkyo sr504 avr. i am quite happy with onkyo so i am thinking of remaining loyal and just going a few steps up.

but i have read so many comments on how it's better to have a pre-amp/power amp combo. i can get a good deal on a nad t744 avr (50 watts x 5) which i will use as a preamp, then hook it up to a t955 (100 watts 5 channels, minimum continuous power(i'm not sure what this means).

the nad pair will cost me double what i will pay for the onkyo. but as what we always say, you have to pay to play.

by the way, it will power a B&W 683, htm61, 686 system.

plus if the Onkyo has analog outputs you can just spend for a Bada poweramp later on, especially if you can buy them used later on. or even 2ch+3ch poweramps.

+1 I agree with this...     

you can add any type/kind of power amps later on if you want to have more headroom to drive bigger speakers...

Also, I read that it's 140w/channel. Will I still benefit if i connect it to a power amp that is only 100 w/channel?

IMHO no need for an ext power amp
