Title: Survivor: Philippines
Post by: Mr. Hankey on Apr 11, 2008 at 06:51 PM
PAUTAKAN! PAGALINGAN! PATATAGAN!

GMA is in search of contestants from 18 to 60 years old, physically fit and willing to become castaways and endure intense physical and mental challenges in an unfamiliar territory for 39 days.

If you think you got what it takes to be one of the 16 castaways for SURVIVOR PHILIPPINES, go to any of the nationwide auditions in key cities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

The audition dates are as follows:

DAVAO (SM Davao) - May 1 and 2
CEBU (SM Cebu) - May 5 and 6
ILOILO (SM Iloilo) - May 8 and 9
BAGUIO (SM Baguio) - May 17 and 18
MANILA (SM North Edsa) - May 21 and 22
MANILA (SM Manila) - May 23

Be part of the biggest reality show worldwide!

Be the Philippines’ first sole SURVIVOR!

=====

Okay, "Outwit. Outplay. Outlast." sounds so much better than "PAUTAKAN! PAGALINGAN! PATATAGAN!"  ;D

But after seeing how GMA is handling the Idol franchise, I'm really worried about this one.

But after seeing how GMA is handling the Idol franchise, I'm really worried about this one.

And also the question is: Will this show survive? :( I really hope so.

Is there any truth to the rumor that the next Survivor in the US will be filmed here in the Philippines?

Da*n, I hope that they don't do a PBB and turn it into another frigging cursillo.

Survivor Philippines???? I think they will just embarrass themselves compared to the USA Survivor

Why do you say that? It would be a good thing if you qualify your statements with more information.

So who's the new Jeff Probst?  My money's on Paolo Bediones.

Oo nga, 'no! Haha!

I'd be very surprised if it's not. Supposedly, ABS-CBN is offering counter-programming to this show with The Amazing Race: Philippines and Pinoy Fear Factor.

hmmm, I wonder if both "Survivor: Gabon" and "Survivor: Philippines" will premiere at the same day...well, the only thing I know is both are set to premiere on September...

I am also wondering, are the Filipinos really ready for the kind of backstabbing and blindsiding, the lies and deceits, the reality-show brings?

Pinoy Big Brother? Are you sure? I think it's a poodle compared to the pitbull, meaning Survivor...

That may be. But as indie boi said, Filipinos have been conditioned by the media to tolerating these kinds of abrasive behavior. Pinoy Big Brother upped the ante a few years back, and the local reception was positive (sans complaints about bitchy contestants, dumb jocks, favoritism, stupid challenges, etc.). Survivor Philippines will raise the bar even higher, but I'm sure Filipinos will find nothing shocking about it.

Just saw the big banners and posters at GMA when I passed by the building this morning. At first, I thought I was looking at the poster for a new telenovela, the contestants were that goodlooking. This is a big disappointment. Reality shows like Survivor thrive on personality and not on looks. This is going to be another audition series for GMA just like PBB is to ABS-CBN. It makes me want to puke just thinking about it...
Title: Re: Survivor: Philippines
Post by: allanmandy on Sep 11, 2008 at 04:54 PM
GMA also gave irritating nicknames to the 18 survivors. Like "Bisayang Palaban", "The Hunk", "Ang Labandera", "Smart Babe", "Ang Yaya", "The Lone Rider" and "Loverboy". Can't we have a local franchise of an international reality show without the name giving, PLEASE!

Here's the list of survivors:

Kristina "Kaye" Alipio, 20, lingerie model
Leona Rica "Nikki" Dacullo, 21, call center agent
Jervy "Patani" Daño, 20, babysitter
Veronica "Vern" Domingo, 29, taekwondo coach
Vevherly Gador, 20, student
Chevyline "Chev" Macias, 26 years old, former GRO
Zita Ortiga, 47, laundrywoman
Maria Nona "Niña" Ortiz, 40, architect/wellness coach
Anna Charisse Yacapin, 26, product officer

Marlon Carmen, 30, waiter
Crisanto "Cris" Cartagenas, 30, company/taxi driver
Emerson Dino, 31, technician
Reynaldo "Jace" Chanco Flores, Jr., 19, gym instructor
John Anthony Lopez, 27, auto mechanic/model
Raymund Francis "Kiko" Rustia, 27, businessman
Cesar "Gigit" Sulit, 49, web designer/mountaineer
Robert Vincent "Rob" Sy, 30, sales officer
John Carlo "JC" Tiuseco, 23, basketball player

Here's a link to the contestants' profiles: link (http://www.pep.ph/photos/1009/Meet_the_18_castaways_of_%22Survivor_Philippines%22)

I also wonder why they have to shoot in Thailand when there are so many inhospitable islands here in the Philippines as well. Why not promote our own country?

I totally laughed at Paolo Bediones' writeup.

Paolo Bediones is the obvious choice to host Survivor Philippines, having hosted the popular reality show Extra Challenge also on GMA-7. But Paolo says people will see a very different Paolo on Survivor Philippines, one who seldom smiles and a very strict host.

A different Bediones who will seldom smile and will be a strict host? Survivor ba to o The Weakest Link?

Yes, according to their TV promos, it's supposed to be at 9:15PM after that Kim-something show.

I wonder if that's intentional: 9:15PM on 9/15/2008?

I couldn't stop laughing when I saw the promo with Paolo Bediones showing the locations. He's actually wearing clothes identical to the one Jeff Probst wears on Survivor.

They turned it into PBB-on-an-island! That's really gonna drag!

I think GMA just lost one viewer here.

I just knew this Kapamilya would never become a Kapuso...  ;D

No, because based on the post above, what they'll be showing for one week is equivalent to what the foreign versions show for only one hour every week.

First Pinoy Idol, now this. GMA really knows how to kill successful American franchises.

I was thinking about how boring the shows will be stretched out to a week, but then something occurred to me: how much did GMA pay for the franchise, and could they have made it up (with a reasonable profit) with advertising for only 13 episodes of a weekly show?

I perhaps understand the economics of it, but still... sheesh! Sira talaga 'to.
Title: Re: Survivor: Philippines
Post by: indie boi on Sep 15, 2008 at 06:34 PM
Yeah, I'm also thinking that the decision was made purely for economic reasons. But it's still going to kill the whole concept of the franchise. I also think that this is just the easiest move to make money. They just didn't want to think of more innovative ways of making the Survivor franchise work for them.

That is why I wasn't surprised that "Survivor: Philippines" will end the telebabad block...since, 30 minutes each for 4 days? and suddenly 1 hour for fridays? It really makes sense to put it last...

That was an incredibly boring 63 minutes! And can you imagine... the entire show takes 39 days - usually that means 3-day cycles of Immunity, Reward, Tribal Council. They're going to stretch those three days to fit 5 days - Monday to Friday!

The editing was really a big problem. If they had shown the entire challenge in 5-7 minutes like the US version does, it could've been exciting. The excessive narration also kills it. I noticed that's the main difference between US and foreign franchises of reality shows - there's almost no voice-over narration in the US, but in other countries, there is a lot of narration. Like Toni's constant voice-overs on PBB. And like all the narration on the UK's The Apprentice and UK/Aussie versions of The Mole.

I still can't get over the fact that Paolo Bediones raided Jeff Probst's wardrobe.  ;D
Title: Re: Survivor: Philippines

I actually wished that they all drowned when they jumped off the boat. My gulay! That was the slowest, most boring contestant intro I have ever seen! I think that swimming "challenge" alone spanned three commercial breaks. What's worse, the commercials are even longer than the show itself!

What is up with the Yaya's interview get-up? I'm sorry, but her pony-tailed, tank-topped get-up really freaked me out!  ;D

Is it just me, or were the men too good-looking or macho? At least with the women, there's more variety, but the men... Three-quarters of them looked like models! And dividing them gender-wise, that can't be fair! How can the women possibly compete (physically) with those muscular men?  Boo! But in fairness to the Labandera, she was second to reach the beach, so there's some hope for them.

As for Paolo, I thought he wanted to show a side of him that rarely smiles? Then why does it look like he's still hosting Extra Challenge or Tok Tok Tok?

Aaaahhh! That pilot episode sank to the bottom of the sea in my opinion. It was wholly boring and the production looked just like Extra Challenge. I hope GMA's version would improve in the coming days, or else it's the show that needs surviving in the cutthroat primetime television block.

I think the franchise cost GMA a ton of money that the producers decided to throw-in Jeff Probst's old clothes to save them some moolah. Hahaha! This might also explain why, on the pilot episode, there already is a freaking text contest.

Found this blind item in Sunday's Inquirer:

False reality

Rushes earlier received an e-mail saying it was useless to audition for this reality contest because finalists had been pre-selected, that there was even a separate go-see for model types.

Indeed, at least two aspirants on the reality show are runners-up in bikini contests.

In a rival show, at least two has-beens were reportedly tapped as contestants. One is TV Host with a druggie rep; the other, Former Actress who’s into tall, dark men who like to play with balls.

I don't know. While I agree that the pace was slow, that there were too many commercials, that the voice-over kills the excitement, and that the background music was so boring, I'm still hopeful that this will turn out good. But being a daily show, I don't think I'll be watching it EVERYday.

The spider web/rope challenge was funny. In the US version, this would have been done over deep waters. In this edition, the water wasn't even knee-deep!

A once a week airing would have generated more interest among viewers.  Daily shows...parang magsasawa mga audience.  But this might be more on the business side for the studio.  Puno na nga ng commercials yun initial telecast.  What more if once a week lang?  The studio cannot possibly accommodate all the sponsors.... lost income potential for them.

Actually, that web part of the challenge was a direct copy of a challenge done in one of the earlier Survivors (I think it's the one where Ethan's eventual girlfriend was one of the final four), and it was not done over deep waters but mud that's a bit higher than ankle-length. I think Hankey can give a better perspective and description of this because he's our resident reality TV expert. :)

One season of Survivor had a man vs woman theme. I remember the men did not perform as well as the women because there was more infighting and they were more busy trying to impress the ladies than actually competing as a cohesive unit. This could also possibly happen to the local version.

Episode 2: "Camp Pasaway"

The game has barely begun, yet there are now "pasaway" castaways.

In the Jarakay camp, a highly-opinionated castaway gets the ire of tribe mates.

Meanwhile in the Naak camp, one castaway refuses to join her tribe in gathering food and building their shelter as she would rather sleep all day.

totally agree with this. almost all the men looked in very good shape. no contest for physical challenges.

Nothing notable...

the guys
...are still debating on where they should build their shelter
...talking about mushrooms
...just found their deep well

the gals
...are already building their shelter
...already have crabs(?) reserved for food
...already found their deep well, on episode 1
...are trying to make fire
...Patani's constantly talking is annoying Nikki, who would rather sleep

Episode 3: Quest for fire

Without fire, both tribes are experiencing extreme hunger. The castaways are now finding novel ways to nourish themselves.

...I think the "finding novel ways to nourish themselves" of Nikki and Kaye is to sleep the whole day and do nothing, that way they can save their strength and they won't get hungry... ;D

The all-male Jarakay tribe swallows raw fish, except for one castaway who refuses to eat the unsavory treat.

So far, so zzzz...plus, how many commercial gaps does a show needs?

The only thing notable in tonight's episode was -- Marlon and Cris has started to talk strategies...

Also, I think they followed thru with the 30 minutes show, right?

The half hour show opens with a 6 minute segment (including flashback and opening credits), then 5 minutes of commercials, a 4 minute segment, then 5 minutes of commercials, a 3 minute segment, then 4 minutes of commercials, then a 5 minute segment (including closing credits).

Note how the two middle segments are actually shorter than the commercials that bridge them.  ::)

I can't wait for the real Survivor to start instead of this farce. And to make it even funnier, when you watch the live feeds of the real Survivor on Friday afternoons... usually there are even NO commercials, right?  ;D

Compute the number of minutes the thirty minute show has in total and you realize it's a rip-off. A thirty-minute show minus the time allotted for commercials should total at least 20 to 22 minutes. S:P only offers 18 minutes.

This localized series is leaving a very bad taste in the mouth. I'm surprised that Mark Burnett Productions gave the go-ahead to this mangling of the franchise. But then, PBB was mangled by ABS-CBN and Endemol agreed to it so I guess that's how the big two really operates. It's a good thing that Solar was intelligent enough to preserve the integrity of Project Runway Philippines by being faithful to the original and not turn it into a telenovela or an audition bootcamp for aspiring actors.

Episode 4: New Tribes

The first big twist shocks the castaways.

Alliances are tested.

...WHAT ALLIANCES? The only alliance I have seen so far is Marlon and Cris...

One member of the Naak tribe breaks down in frustration, while a tribe mate hatches a devilish plan against another castaway.

...Marlon against Kiko?

NEW NAAK

...Chevyline Macias -- "Chev"
...Zita Ortiga
...Kristina Alipio -- "Kaye"
...Vevherly Gador
...Emerson Dino
...Cirsanto Cartagenas -- "Cris"
...John Carlo Tiuseco -- "JC"
...Robert Vincent Sy -- "Rob"
...Raymund Francis Rustia -- "Kiko"

NEW JARAKAY

...Maria Nona Ortiz -- "Nina"
...Anna Charisse Yacapin
...Veronica Domingo -- "Vern"
...Leona Rica Dacullo -- "Nikki"
...Jervy Dano -- "Patani"
...Cesar Sulit -- "Gigit"
...John Anthony Lopez
...Marlon Carmen
...Reynaldo Chanco Flores, Jr. -- "Jace"

So, reward challenge was won by the old Jarakay during the pilot episode...immunity won by new Jarakay...

I'm leaning towards Kiko as the first one voted off...Chev, Zita and Vevherly will probably not vote for each other, for now...I don't think the guys will vote off Kaye...since, Kiko is the most opinionated, he will probably get the boot...

wow, you must really be a big fan of this.. na-analyze mo na kagad mangyayari.. ;D

hahaha...well, my prediction was a flop... ;D Chev was the one voted off first...

I think I won't visit the Survivor: Philippines official website anymore...every preview were placed in advance...

example, Episode 2 preview -- "In the Jarakay camp, a highly-opinionated castaway gets the ire of tribe mates.", we did saw a glimpse of this during the last minutes of the episode, but, was shown in whole on Episode 3...Episode 3 preview -- "
The all-male Jarakay tribe swallows raw fish, except for one castaway who refuses to eat the unsavory treat.", but, this didn't happen until Episode 4...Episode 4 preview -- "
One member of the Naak tribe breaks down in frustration, while a tribe mate hatches a devilish plan against another castaway.", but, this didn't happen until Episode 5...

The Episode 5 preview also helped in my wrong prediction..."A castaway will try to convince his tribe mates into voting out a physical threat.", but, Chev was the one the Naak tribe were planning to boot...physical threat? I don't think they voted out Chev because of "physical threat"...based on the preview, I really thought a guy was getting the boot...

so, no more visits to the official website...come to think of it...these previews are spoilers, right? So, I should have used the spoiler tag...my bad...

I don't blame Paolo too much. I actually blame the editors and local producers more, for wanting to stretch what should be a 45 minute show into 2 hours and 15 minutes (that's how long the week lasted without commercials). Even in the States, the post-show interviews always mention that Tribal Council sessions sometimes last for hours.

Aaaaaahhhh.....that's why Paolo's wardrobe looked familiar.   :D

I still can't get over the fact that Paolo Bediones raided Jeff Probst's wardrobe.  ;D

;D I have not seen a single episode of any Survivor edition in the past. So I consider watching Survivor Phils as a treat in its defense. At this early, there's already b**ching, badmouthing, lying, plastikan and even a love angle going on so I guess the show is on the right track. Am I right PBB fans? This is the beauty of  being the uninitiated. I don't get to compare it to any other edition of the show coz I have no basis whatsoeva!  So I might see myself watching more of this in the following weeks.

But some observations are true. Issues on editing and most especially, COMMERCIAL OVERLOAD!!

For me, it's already a 'been there, done that' show. Then there's the SURVIVOR: GABON on QTV-11 starting this week. The best Survivor for me was the Australian Outback Edition. The rest is the same as the other edition I believe. I haven't watch all Survivor shows. Only different settings and participants but still the same approach.

In that edition kasi, you have many participants that you truly root for (e.g. good ol' geriatrics Rodger Bingham and Maralyn Hershey, Colby Donaldson) and of course some obnoxious ones ("Jerry Manthey"). I even bought a Survivor: Australian Outback Special Collector's Issue of People Weekly Extra back then. ;D

mukhang 3rd in row ang tanggalan sa naak tribe this coming friday. im sure nagsisisi na sila why they voted emerson out instead of kaye na walang ginawa kundi ang umiyak.  :D

For me, it's already a 'been there, done that' show. Then there's the SURVIVOR: GABON on QTV-11 starting this week. The best Survivor for me was the Australian Outback Edition. The rest is the same as the other edition I believe. I haven't watch all Survivor shows. Only different settings and participants but still the same approach.

yup, I agree! the best was Survivor 2 i think, Australian Outback Edition. That Edition was really exciting! next was the Survivor All Stars!

Just to show how different opinions can be, for me the worst was Survivor All-Stars. I even prefer Survivor Philippines to that one.

My favorite would be the original. Nothing beats contestants who do not know exactly what they've gotten into, who aren't in it because they've seen other people doing it already. They don't know exactly how to play the game, so it's interesting watching it unfold. And the snake-and-rat speech is one of the most memorable moments in television history.

I also really enjoyed Australia, which I think had an equally good mix of characters/personalities as the original.

;D In fairness to Survivor Philippines, it's far exceeding my expectations and I am enjoying every episode it's showing right now. Straightforward and no dull moment and SO UNLIKE PBB. Level of competition (P3M lang ang prize) is very high with competitors' trying to outdo, outtalk and outwit each other. At may comic relief pa in the person of PATANI. Hope they maintain that momemtum in the following weeks..

The Jarakay men seem to set their eyes on booting off Patani after losing the immunity challenge. But will John's medical emergency affect the upcoming Tribal Council? What are the rules when it comes to these types of emergencies?

Actually it's kinda hard to tell since the others are also eyeing Gigit, Marlon and Nina. Well after seeing tonight's episode it appeared to me that the "coolest" and "wisest" contestant is actually Patani. She's so funny and natural in her interviews and really couldn't care less if she gets booted out....She knows that she's already achieved the exposure she needed for her showbiz breakthrough. If ever, she'd be ideal  in Bubble Gang hahaha  ;D

I must admit, Patani is a far more interesting character than all of the model-types, male and female, combined.

;D Patani now basking in her new found popularity. The morning following her elimination, Patani guested in Unang Hirit and 24 Oras in the evening LIVE!! When Pia asked her to show her newscasting skills, she readily obliged, mixing blurbs from the news show and Walang Tulugan..I must say I was impressed with her near spontaneous delivery. I won't be surprised if one night I saw her delivering the news with Mike Enriquez.

;D I'm enjoying every episode of this show. The other night's reward challenge was quite fun, seeing Mommy Zita anchoring her team to win that coveted lechon de leche. She's a great swimmer, strong and highly dependable. Spoiler notwithstanding I'm betting on her now.

i'm starting to like it, as well.  ;D

what i still hate though is paolo's hosting. he's too stiff and tries too hard as opposed to jeff's spontaneity, thus truly deserving of the emmy win. he should loosen up a bit and take the game as it is, just a game!  :D

hindi ba leading 'yung question na "deserving ba si nikki" in favor of john? of course, i like john to stay pero let the team decide who they want to vote out and not lead them into thinking that one is deserving than the other. para sa ratings ba ito?

what was the prize for naak's win last night?  i think booting off john in last week's tribal council was a big f^<kup on jarakay's part. of the five persons left, only two can qualify as physically fit for the challenges.

Title: Re: Survivor: Philippines
Post by: blitzkrieg on Oct 29, 2008 at 10:56 PM
;D Tonight's immunity challenge was one tough cookie and the most exciting and nervewracking so far: obstacle course in a cage that required digging a hole in the sand, slipping ones body underneath with hands in chains!

And Zita ruled again just to prove to everyone that age is just a number! And what I like about her is the fact that even if she smothers her much younger competitors with her motherly love, she still shows them she can kick their asses in physical challenges!

MOMMY ZITA ROCKS!!

She deserves to win this contest. Not just because she's a member of the marginalized sector, but because she actually performs well. I do hope the rumors about JC being the winner aren't true.

;D Last nights show was heart tugging. A little bit of PBB (I mean, the "iyakan" part) but not forced.  I think the drama parts of this show were finely tuned and not at all irritating since for the most parts, they involved b**ching, snitching and betrayal which were all integral and fun to watch at.

Glad that Mommy Zita (together with son-in-law) won the Reward Challenge which is a trip to Bangkok and she made fine selections of who she'd like to share it with. I just hope JC's victory is not at all true. It's only Mommy Zita who could meet head on with JC when it comes to physical challenges.
