Hi,
My friends have been convincing me to just buy a PS3 as it can do a number of things: games, play bluray and dvd disks, HD output, etc... Also, one of the biggest factors is PRICE. A PS3 is about the same or EVEN CHEAPER than that of commercial bluray players avialable in the market today.
now my question to you guys is...
WHAT DO THESE BLURAY PLAYERS HAVE THAT THE PS3 DOES NOT HAVE FOR THEM TO COMMAND A HIGH PRICE???
-
Taken from another forum ...
From BR playback perspective...
PS3
- generally loads faster
- more stable
- Profile 1.1 compliance
Samsung
- really ideal for guys with HDMI 1.3 receivers and want a way to listen to DTS HD MA/HR soundtracks
- runs cooler and quieter
Frankly, the only way to get DTS HD MA/HR soundtracks today at this kind of budget is what made a lot of us (most of whom ALREADY own PS3s!) switch to the Samsung
especially comes to TrueHD Stero and Bitstream Multichn.
BluRay discs come with a variety of soundtracks
Uncompressed/Lossless Audio
a. multichannel uncompressed 5.1 (or higher) soundtracks
b. multichannel Dolby TrueHD soundtracks
c. multichannel DTS HD MA soundtracks
HD Audio (lossy)
i. multichannel Dolby Digital Plus soundtracks
ii. multichannel DTS HD HR soundtracks
Regular Audio (lossy)
i. Dolby Digital
ii. DTS aka DTS Core aka DTS Encore
Basically, if you have an HDMI connection to yr receiver, the PS3 can decode pretty much all the soundtracks.
Except c and ii.
Now this would be fine, if the movie contains say:
a. Dolby True HD or uncompressed PCM and
b. DTS HD MA soundtrack
So even if I can't listen to the HD MA soundtrack, I could still get option a. which would be just as good.
Unfortunately, FOX decided to release all their movies with only DTS HD MA as the uncompressed audio option. If you don't have a way to decode DTS MA, all you get is the embedded DTS Core (lossy) or Dolby Digital
Either way, shortchanging us on the full HD video and audio experience.
That's what it feels like on the PS3.
If you don't buy Fox titles, or you don't have a compatible HDMI 1.3 receiver to decode DTS HD MA, then the Samsung is no better than the PS3 in that respect.
-
Thanks JT. this sure answered a lot of my questions...
so bottom line is... all I need is a PS3 right? this about answers almost all of the needs that we have to play blu ray.
by the way, would you know if the PS3 is already HDMI 1.3?
thanks!
-

1. Depends on what you want. If just for basic playing games or watching Blu-ray movies, etc then PS3 is certainly a cheaper option. :)
2. Yes, PS3 is using HDMI 1.3
-
follow up question, can a fimware upgrade sometime in the future for the ps3 allow for it to output those sound formats?
is it possible? or is the answer "no its impossible"?
-
it maybe possible pero i think Sony might be concentrating more na on PS3 games especially this year, pero they already said they will update the PS3 to be BD2.0
-
is it possible? or is the answer "no its impossible"?
I presume you're referring to the lossless DTS MA. Any answer at this stage is totally speculative as SONY is completely silent about it while some members from other forums (impatiently) openned up the whole PS3 & inspected the chip/processor inside the console. They claim PS3 hardware is incapable of outputting DTS MA (internal decoding) nor outputting it as bit stream tru firmware upgrade.
-
WOW PCHIN... they disected a PS3 to know the answer to this? wow hehe...
Anyways, would you know how much a PS3 80GB costs today? I think SRP is still 30T right?
thanks!

its around 26k.
oh well, until we hear it from Sony then I guess its ok to hope...

Hi,
I heard from a friend that the hard disk inside the PS3 can be "upgraded" even up to 500GB without spoiling the warranty? Any comments or views? Anong disks ang pwede impampalit and how much kaya?
thanks!

Baka any 5.2 HDD can work on the PS3. If not it'll be the 2.5" (laptop) HDD.
These hard rives are cheaper now, 120GB (2.5", which is more expensive of the 2) is around 4K or less.
This is another "plus" for the PS3 (on the gaming end) that you can increase the HDD.
-
what will the big Hard Disks be for pala? i haven't encountered the PS3 pa kase... can the ps3 games be stored in there ba? sorry for the 101 question...
thanks!

Nothing about this is definite, but I believe the PS3 can output DTS-MA in the future. Given its powerful Cell processors, it has the horsepower to do the necessary decoding. PowerDVD ultra(HTPC application software) is capable of decoding DTS-MA and its just a playback software. stand alone Blurry players need a dedicated chip to decode the format.

Pls pls let it comes true soon cos we are desperate na to experience DTS MA! All my Fox tittles are gathering dust na...:D

i am also torn between ps3 and a standalone player.. i still have 1.5 months to decide though hehehe.
i think one of the features i want on a bluray player that is not avaiable on the ps3 is the analog outputs to support old receivers without HDMI... My yammie 1600 is still doing great but it doesn't have a HDMI :(
-
another thing to consider is that Bluetooth ang remote niya so if you have an universal IR remote controller hinde siya magamit, also you have to navigate in the XMB to play your BD, unless you turn off your Autostart option
-
Fruity fanbois saying the PS3 is da best!
-
less power consumption. ???

game saves, downloads (movie and BD trailers/ game demos/ downloadable full games at a price ofcourse), music, photos.... it would be good if you had wifi and an HDTV this would maximize ur ps3 experience

Hi guys, am a happy PS3 owner which I only use for BD movies (am not that much into gaming). At the back of my head though, I am still cautious about the 'wear & tear' of doing marathon BD movies. I have been 'minimizing' the lens usage given the feedback in the other threads that the lens does give way after awhile. Sure it costs only around P4k to have it replaced but am thinking, wouldn't a dedicated BD player be more robust cause it's built to play movies? Haven't heard of any lens replacement issues with dedicated BD players vs. PS3 testimonials wherein they have already replaced the lens after much use. Am trying to think this through myself, any feedback or suggestions are welcome. Many thanks! ;)
-
^same concern ako dito.
-
Maybe, just maybe... The drive installed in PS3 is not as durable than the stand alone. imagine a gaming/blu ray player is cheaper than a stand alone. Why?
-
It's time to buy dedicated Blu Ray player. Sony Player (BDPS300) cost US$ 399.00 (Best Buy)here around Php 16K what more can we ask??
-

its true... my lense died today..middle of a deathmatch in COD4..it frozed!..time to go to the store tommorow...for a replacement.. ;D ;D

Hmmm... scary thought - what if the PS3 lens gives way due to too much movie abuse? ;D
I read in a separate thread that the lens is really the weakness of the PS3, some testimonials logged in.
Am still not sure on the consensus of the group though ??? Is it sound advice to just get an independent BD player to 'lower' the movie playtime on the PS3?
-
well i've been using my PS3 as a movie player, worldwide 3% daw ang failure rate ng PS3 same ng Wii, but i would think mas easier on the lens ang movies dahil sequential naman ang reading sa disk? unlike a game hehehe
-

maybe, but the BluRay Lens never rests when watching dvd movies is what I'm worried about. Unlike in a game it may rest after the environment is loaded.
remember the PSone, and PS2? The lens was its weakest link.
-
good point, in the long run though i'm going to get another BD player

That's scary! :o im planning to get a ps3 now as my bluray player until gran turismo 5 comes along. What version of ps3 did you get? im planning to get the 40gb ps3.
-
I was contemplating on a BD player but someone said that PS3 is better. But after learning here about the lens and from another member that it cant let your receiver decode the new formats... I think I will consider the dedicated player more.
I will be borrowing a Samsung 1400 tonight. ;D
-
just would like to have a POLL -
who uses a PS3 as Blu-Ray player? what region?
who has a PS3 at which whose lens konked out due to watching Blu-ray movies?
thanks!
-
I'm using the PS3 as my media center, i think lahat PS3 sa atin ay BD Region A

Hi. I just bought a PS3, mainly for its BD capability, and yes for some games as well. Unfortunately, naka lock pala yung DVD player nya to R3. How do I unlock it so I could play all my other R1 DVDs??? Do we know or medyo mahirap to do so with a PS3? Pls help! Thanks! :-[

yikes, no way to unlock this? so dapat pala iwas tayo sa mga cheap PAL Versions.

The equivalent price in PHP of 16K is too good to be true. The suggested retail price of sony of this model here is about PHP47K.
From Sony website:
Suggested Retail Price
P 46,990.00 *
(inclusive of 12% VAT for cash purchase)
I dont know the actual price in the stores..if its the same or higher.

odyopayl's quoted price is from the US. If you have relatives, it'd be much cheaper to import the player than buying it locally which is usually 3 times more than the retail price in US.
-
Saw one sa Listening Room sa Mega. Mahal nga. Selling at 29K :-\ :-\ :-\ But loading time is really slow, though not as slow as Toshiba HD A35.
-
Sirs, meron na po bang nakakita locally ng Panasonic BD-30K? How much po?
-
Bought Samsung 1400 last december, no problems encountered until now. Mabilis mag-load :)

Games Extreme (where I bought my PS3) are now advising customers who bought the PS3 from them not to use it much to watch Bluray movies kasi madali daw masisira ang lens.
-
huh! now I'm torn which to buy ps3 or the sony s300. same price sila sa best buy $399.
-

really?! for me its hard to objectively say that the real cause of the broken lens is through watching bluray, if they really want to dissect it dapat tanungin nila mga na siraan how they used their ps3 (gaming vis-a-vis watching dvds and bluray).
sa pinoypsx (playstation forum), some members there actually think that the firmware has a contributory factor in the problem, may isang member kasi dun, ok ang ps3 nya, nung nag update to 2.17fw, nag ha-hang na ang ps3 nya pag nag play ng bluray (either games or movie) but other functions work (accessing the hd or watching dvds) kaya puzzled sya. then he decided to update to 2.20fw, oila! ok na sya ulit. wierd but true story from a real life user of ps3.

Whew! I hope you're right on this sir. I am now starting to watch my Prison Break Season 1 BD using PS3. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :-\ One thing that is good with having a PS3 is that we know where to bring it just in case it gets busted unlike those standalone BD players were after sales parts and service are still questionable here in PI.

2 years old na yung PS3 ko pero no problems so far. I guess yung newer models tinitipid sa gawa ng Sony compared the 20GB and 60GB.

the ps3's main purpose is to play games.. hours upon hours of gaming.. how can it not handle such a simple task as playing a movie?

Check out the PS3 thread. Someone explains actually playing movies will bring more wear & tear than playing game alone.
-
^yup bro movies deal a heavy part on the lens as it constantly reads the disc. as for gaming it only reads parts at a time
-
Maybe, but my 18 month old PS3 is a dedicated movie player. I have more than 100 br disc watched as well as contant DEMO for friends once or twice a week. Its one hell of a sturdy machine. Best HD value ever! ;D
-
^bro thats very good news for us PS3 users hehe tnx for the info!

According to sir nemesis, so far the 40gb version has no lens problems. The 80gb version is the one that is defective.

Might be correct since 40G lang binibinta dito sa U.S. The number 1 contributor bakit sila nasisira kaagad if playing Movies: Because of Heat! Heat! Heat! I'm happy with my Fan. You know how hot is our player inside? Get a fan and check the output para siya hair dryer hahaha.
-
I recently bought a PS3 40gb mainly for watching blu-ray movies. I also plan to use this for DVD movies, but I'm planning to buy titles from Amazon. It states there that their DVD movies are Region 1. My question is, is the PS3 40gb region free? Thanks in advance.
-

buti na lang... 40Gb is what i own. used mainly for games. i dont think it heats up a lot. PS3 is very durable and it has good ventilation in itself at the sides. sometimes i put my hand on it when my kids are playing and surprisingly its not that hot.
-
hmmmm... naku, hindi ko na tuloy alam kung ps3 bibilhin ko or standalone bd player.. :(
-
Magkano kaya PS3 sa Bangkok? My sister is going there next week, might ask her to buy for me kung mas mura.
-
mag kano ba ang cheapest standalone BD player dito sa atin? and what brand?
???

PS3 is region locked for DVDs bro

Good to hear that, in this case it's safe to say the 60gb has no lens problem too. :)
-
Check out the PS3 thread. Someone explains actually playing movies will bring more wear & tear than playing game alone.
Hi Paul, I still fully support your previous contention. ;) I previously had a 60G PS3 and now have the 40G white version and fortunately haven't encountered a lens issue. However, am still very wary about the wear & tear if I do a BD movie marathon so I am more frequently using my Sharp Aquos BD player vs. my PS3.
IMO, would still recommend BD enthusiasts score an independent BD player for better durability given the testimonials of lenses giving-in, when using the supposedly game-oriented PS3.
Well anyway, PS3 prices are dropping quick so the P4k+ lens replacement cost is becoming less of an issue as time progresses. Thus, you may very well still take that risk and just go PS3 fulltime for your BD titles.
Just my 10cents. ;)

Is the BD lens of the 80gb version different from the 40gb version?

Oh nooooooo, sana yung PS3 (80gb) ko will have no lens problem. In case masira puwede ba na yung replacement lens na ikabit is for the 40gb?

i had a defective ps3 40g after using it for a month. don't know if lens is the problem but it could not read any disc. supplier changed it with a new one.
-
BDL failures are being reported also with the 40gb model with manufactured date Sept. '07 at AVSforrum.com
What is the build date on your PS3? Should be a white sticker along the side or on the bottom. It appears that PS3s with Sep 2007 build dates are having the most issues with optical drive failuers.
-
Ya thats why I really want a standalone, before pa this issue happened. So far naman mine is the 60 gig and it is great. I think the first ones that came out (60 gigs) were the really good ones. Maybe to try to lower cost on the later models to sell at those 399 dollar levels they did not use parts that are as good as the 60 gig. I remember the 60 gig cost (for sony) almost 800 to 900? and they are selling it at 599 to 699? I know they are taking loss on this model when they started out just to get majority of the BD market. I want my ps3 for just games. I don't play dvds on it ;D., even if its a great dvd player. I can say the my ps3 is built way tougher compared to the xbox 360. My 360 is already beyond repair. A piece of crap I can say.
-
Ya thats why I really want a standalone, before pa this issue happened.
Almost everyone really wants a standalone bd player but to date, no standalone can still match the price vs performance/features of the ps3.
-
I think it is more practical to buy a PS3 muna before getting the stand alone BD player. At least while waiting for the BD discs and player to become cheaper maglaro muna! Hehe
-
hi,
I started this thread asking why... and I'd just like to tell everyone that I have jumped into the bandwagon of PS3!!!
why?
The PS3 has firmware updates!!! You can't just update the firmware of blu ray players (dedicated).
why?
The PS3 is cheap (when i bought it 3 months ago) - Php 18,200 japan silver. I heard Sony has lost or has had a loss of US$3Billion since the PS3's launch 3 years ago. so there's a chance that prices will soar, plus the weakening peso.
why?
I'm not much of a gamer, but i do enjoy the demo games (free) once in a while hehe.
COME AND JOIN THE CLUB!
-
Also the PS3, at US$399, you get the 80gb model with all the bells and whistles. THe 40gb will be phased out.
-
magkano po ba PS3 sa local market now? magpapabili ako sa U.S if mas mura dun. pwede po ba yun U.S verson dito sa atin?
-
oo, pwede, region free kasi ang PS3 BD games tapos same lang BD region natin sa US at Japan, i think P18,500 or something in that range ang PS3 sa Greenhills ngayon, $399 kasi sa US
-
ah ok. sa games but is it true pagdating sa DVD, different region ang U.S compared dito so you cannot play dvd movies made here?
-
Yup, Asian PS3s are DVD Region 3, so only can play Region 3 DVDs for example

best bet talaga is Amazon through JAC, you mean region free sa DVD?
-
yung standalone BD players ba region free?
Better stick to BD playback na lang for the PS3 to preserve the lens & let ordinary DVD player deal with DVD. :)
-
for me, sa ngayon i'll use my ps3 for games and BD movies habang wala pa akong dedicated BD player. pero if budget permit, kukuha ako ng stand alone BD player to preserve my PS3. I think the PS3 is not built to be a BD player, its just added bonus for the console pero not to the extent na gagamitin na sya as dedicated BD player.

I had been using my PS3 exclusively for BD playback and had not encountered any problems since day 1. IMO, the PS3 is well-built for BD playback, a value for your money. In fact, other members here use their PS3s also for BD playback, and they, like me, are surely enjoying the hi-def experience. ;D

a bit ot lang po .. anyone here who already tried getting their ps3 games/movies via HMR .. near pioneer robinson daw? ;D ;D
someone told me that its 500 - 1000 pesos per game .. (2nd hand)

I'm kinda scared to use the PS3 as a BD player. there is a lot of other users the is experiencing BD lens problem on their PS3. maybe it would depend on the unit itself.
-
Most probably, but remember hanggang ngayon wala pa ring alam na specific reason kung bakit na b-bdl ang PS3 so it might not be just by using it as a bd movie player

ive been using my PS3 as a BD player since last year, no issues

A lot of other users? ;D Based on my observation including other international forums, the ratio of getting a busted lens as compared to the PS3 owners, seems very very small.... ;D Yes, the problem probably could due to certain batch of production.
-
up for this thread
-
been using my ps3 for 1.2 years now, 40gb white version. About 90% BD and SD movies (3 lang kasi game ko e hehe) so far no issue naman. Sometime movie marathon weekend with my family, at least 4 movies a day for 2 straight days. It's our usual weekend thing.
Successfully played every BD and DVD (mapa-pirated) I throw at it, except for one DTS Audio CD (Bilocation uk) that for some reason it's unable to play (the same disc doesn't play on non-DTS enabled machines, sayang it's for calibrating the proper location of speakers pa naman for DTS) (http://www.bilocation.co.uk/) Labo nga, DTS naman ang ps3 ???
Kung masira man yung lens, basta 4k-5k lang siguro, ok na rin. Tumagal na sakin e, sulit na. If the lens already costs that much to repair for a PS3, how much pa kaya for stand alone players? :)
