Much will be missed if these films are viewed in English. I suggest you guys get the Asian Release.

The film is originally dubbed in an Asian Language. The US dub would slightly different I suppose. Also, the Asian releases are in DTS.

Originally dubbed is always better I guess, but I don't like films with Cantonese language audio tracks, quite annoying for me.  ;D

Personally I prefer to watch foreign films in their original language. I find English dubs annoying as they feel unnatural.

Same here. For me, it's like the audio is out of sync w/ the video.  ;D

According to the link, the discs have both original Cantonese and English language tracks, as well as English subtitles.

Unless one is fluent in Mandarin, I don't quite understand what you will be missing by purchasing this set, film-wise. You can watch it with lips in sync with the Cantonese track while reading the English subtitles, if you so desire.

DTS. And the fact that we are accustomed to watch Asians speak Asian Languages. Imagine Sharon Cuneta or Vic Sotto's films being dubbed by Americans.

Audio-Video Sync and Natural Sounds play a big part also also.

Exactly what I was pointing out - one can listen to the original Cantonese 5.1 track with the original sound effects, music and audio-video sync while reading the English subtitles, if one so desires. No one who buys this R1 set will be forced to listen to an American dubbed English track unless they want to. The Mandarin track of the R3 seems to just be a redub, since the spoken language of the filmmaker/actors commentary track is Cantonese.

Pardon as I only speak little Chinese. Cantonese and Mandarin would sound the same to me as I am not familiar with the dialects.

Mr. Hankey, one of the Region 1 highlight (and selling point for English Speakers) is the American dub which is the subject being singled out and discussed here.

Thanks for pointing that out, hemisphere. I was aware of that, since I actually did read the comments and provided links before discussing them. I was reacting to the fact that when the first poster was shocked at the English track, your suggestion was to buy the Asian release instead of the R1 since a lot will be missed by watching the film in English. That made it sound like the R1 doesn't contain the original language track.

My point was: if one is worried about missing out on the film "as originally intended," then there's no reason to pass on the R1 and get the Asian release instead.

I guess it again comes down to personal biases on which release is better. Enjoy your Asian release!

I think the discussion has purged some important details/attributes like DTS and country of origin tagged as basis for purchase or stahdard.. not just mere personal biases.

Actually, hemisphere, you purged that when you said: "the American dub which is the subject being singled out and discussed here."

We're going in circles which I think is not helpful to the discussion.

Enjoy your Region 1 Release!
