In a chat over breakfast, the 25-year-old Hoshina admitted he represented  the Philippines in the qualifiers leading to the London Games because he has more chances of making it than competing in Japan where good, tough judokas abound.

“Small chance in Japan,” Hoshina said in halting English. “There (in the Philippines) easy.”

comparing with the opening of london vs beijing, what are your opinions?

my personal opinion, beijing showed their enourmous wealth and manpower and gave the best show on earth for the audience both in house and televiewers while london used technology and made the audience a part of the show, therefore looking good for the televiewers.  beijing had you focused in the field alone, while london had you focusing on different parts of the stage for there were tons of things going on at the same time.

i liked chinas production overall, except for 1 portion of the show where london showed them their ace.... mr bean. :D pwede narin yung 007 part.

while beijing was a cultural show for everybody, london was a part theatre, part movie, part musical and part concert.

but nothing would beat athens' 2004 olympic torch lighting... that was the best and creative way of lighting the olympic torch ive ever seen...

Arrow shot from a bow to light up the cauldron, that was the best.  I believe that was Barcelona.

The Brits know they cannot match the Chinese for spectacle.  So they give us the next best thing -rock n roll.  :)

China hasn't lost a beat. Even if they're not hosting the Games, they still seem to have a stranglehold on many of the events.

Hope we win a medal this year. I'm a bit disappointed that our amateur boxing has failed to catch up to the rest of the world.

China has a rich tradition of being a force in international competition.

most pinoy boxers want to follow the steps of manny pacquiao rather than mansueto evlasco. it's all about going pro and making money. most of these boxers come from poverty so you really can't blame them. and the way the government chokes the budget for our national athletes, that pretty much limits their choices, is it true we only have one boxer in the olympics?

Too bad they don't know that ... for example Muhammad Ali is/was an Olympian? Mayweather?

...

Yes hopefully when the time comes the goverment can also focus on Sports, but apparently after the SONA, looks like its not yet a priority.

GOING GETS TOUGHER FOR BARRIGA

By Ronnie Nathanielsz
PhilBoxing.com
Wed, 01 Aug 2012

Mark Anthony Barriga, fresh from a sensational 17-7 thrashing of favored Italian light flyweight Manuel Cappai knows that the going gets tougher in his quest for an Olympic medal when he clashes with Kazakhstan’s rugged Birzhan Zhakypov for a place in the quarter finals of the London Games.

Barriga battles Zhakypov who edged Jeremy Beccu of France 18-17 on August 4 at the ExCel Arena knowing that the crowd will be behind him as it was when he scored a rousing win over the European bronze medalist Cappai on Tuesday.

Zhakypov won a bronze medal at the 2005 World Amateur Championships and qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics where he lost to top favorite and gold medal winner Zou Shiming 4-9. He was also beaten by the Chinese superstar in the finals of the 2010 Asian Games.

I dont understand why there are sports that allow professionals (tennis, basketball) and some do not.  Iba rin naman rules ng FIBA sa NBA, the basics are the same pero may slight differences.  Does anyone have an insight as to why?

It depends on the international federation which is in charge of the sport.  FIBA allows professionals (this will change soon) for Olympic Basketball while FIFA has strict rules for Olympic Football (age limits for most with a limited amount of overaged players).

AIBA has strict rules against professionalism in Olympic Boxing, as professional boxing is often associated with gambling.  They feel that gambling has no place in the Olympics and, if allowed, will taint the results of medal finishes.

Hmm.., ang naive naman nila kung akala nila walang gambling in the amateurs, hehe...The judges have too much influence in Boxing, that is what taints the results, Professional or Amateur. :)

He must win his fights by ko or tko or rsc lest he end up like the japanese boxer who lost by points after dropping his opponent 5 to 6 times in the last round. the decision though, was protested and the protest upheld.

sayang talaga. After 2 rounds lamang na sya. Akala ko tuloy tuloy na.

Ubos after 2 rounds, walang snap ang suntok at nawala ang bilis! Sayang ang galing ng round 1&2. And yung kalaban was a head taller than Barigga! Tapos may +1 -1 pa sya from the referee, with the score at 17-16 it would have been 17-16 for barriga instead of for the kazak.

Alam naman natin na ganyan lagi ang istorya, kaya dapat manalo ng napakalaki ang lamang, para sobrang obvious kung sakali dayain, medyo mahihiya 'yung mandaraya ;D

Barriga loss stands as protest is rejected
Yahoo! PH Sports

UPDATE 2: The Philippines' protest on the outcome of the light flyweight fight between Mark Anthony Barriga and Kazakhstan's Birzhan Zhakypov, which the latter won, 17-16, has been rejected.

In a telephone interview aired on AKTV, Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines executive director Ed Picson said that the jury ruled that the protest was subjective and not based on a technicality, adding the jury made the decision without watching a replay of the fight.

Reporter Lia Cruz of AKTV had earlier reported that the Philippines filed the protest on the grounds that a boxer must be warned three times first before incurring a penalty. Barriga was warned only once by referee Roland Nabbe, who then awarded Zhakypov two points.Without those extra two points, Barriga would have won, 16-15.

Earlier this week, a protest was filed by the United States following the loss of American boxer Errol Spence to India's Vikas Krishan in their welterweight bout. Krishan was declared winner, 13-11, but the competition jury said four additional points should have been awarded to Spence for fouls committed by the Indian. The protest was thus upheld, and Krishan's win was overturned.
Barriga was leading 10-8 heading into the third and final round, using his agility and quickness to stagger the taller Zhakypov in the first two rounds. But he visibly lost the sting in his punches in the third and final round.

Barriga appeared worn out as the 5-foot-6 Zhakypov put on the pressure in the last three minutes. The diminutive Filipino pug was then slapped by Labbe with a warning for excessive ducking, and this is where the two additional points were awarded to Zhakypov.

With the bout turning into a wrestling match, Labbe also gave both fighters a warning near the end of the bout. But it was the Davao-native fighter who paid the price dearly, as Zhakypov managed to win the third round 9-6.

That controversial call left Filipino officials, led by Picson, up in arms.

“A warning that was given means a two-point addition. That gave two points to the Kazakh. That’s the one that really hurts. We should have won by one,” lamented Picson in an overseas phone interview moments after the bout.

Barriga's campaign started with much promise after he easily beat Italy’s Manuel Cappai in the round of 32 by a score of 17-7.

Zhakypov will next face Beijing Olympics gold medalist Zou Shiming of China, who beat Cuba's Yosbany Veitia Soto, 14-11. Zou beat Zhakypov in the finals of the light flyweight division in the 2010 Asian Games.

At least the british Tennis fans can celebrate a pseudo wimbledon win! And i honestly think its close to a grand slam, lalo na every 4 years lang ang summer olympics, ang wimbledon may chance sya manalo every year.

I can think of some Olympic sports where we can excel but I just do not know if we will ever acquire the will to exert a serious national effort to target those medals.

Pistol shooting for instance. Ang daming mahilig sa baril dito and it doesn't require size and speed, just a steady pulse and lots of practice.  Same thing can be said for archery.

Diving is a another possibility if for example we can get an expert to train those coin divers at the Matnog and Liluan ferryboat docks, start them young like China.

Our best bet is probably boxing still and I wondered why we only had 1 at London.

Forget athletics for instance as we have no hope of winning there given our natural physique.  Was surprised to see a Filipino join the 5000-meters heats.  What didn't surprise was he came in last - lapped by the field and more than a minute behind. You just cannot beat those highlanders from Kenya and Ethiopia. It's the lay of the land and demographics - Kenyans and Ethiopians are used to running and walking daily (no cars) in the thin air so the oxygen levels at sea level is like a bonus for them.

Our boxers rather be in the pros than be an Olympian.

sadly most pinoy boxers are really hard up and the choice to go pro is for them to earn and have something to eat.
