Title: The Passion of the Christ
Post by: ThePatriot on Feb 28, 2004 at 10:04 AM
from www.thedigitalbits.com:

20th Century Fox has agreed to distribute Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ on DVD.  There's no word yet on a street date, but you can bet it won't take too long to get the film out on disc, given the film's $26.6 million opening last wednesday.

I watched the movie already..have to go 1 hr before its showtime. weekends tickets are all  sold out.guess, this is one of the best movie of the year..

Gibson’s Passion certainly isn’t for everyone. Christians should use it as a reminder of their faith, and capitalize on the need for discussion that such a film presents. It’s harsh but predominantly accurate, an unquestionable work of conviction that should outlast the controversy and trigger constructive dialogue for years to come.God help us.

PEACE!!!

On the Movie thread of this title i posted that as of 08 March, the movie already grossed more than $200M just in the US alone, making it potentially the biggest r-rated movie of all time.

That cover looks very familiar.

But I will still get the original DVD once this is released officially.  A wonderful masterpiece definitely worth getting.  I wouldn't be surprised if it gets nominated for some category in next year's Oscars.  Just wondering if it qualifies for the best foreign language film.  Or maybe the Acedemy could create a new category for best dead language film.  ;D  Just kidding for a change.  (The other thread really is getting too serious.  I think mostly because of me, he he  ;D)

It's showing 24 hours a day in the U.S. is that true? ???

My friends from Boston already saw it & their Parish priest is recommending it to watch.

I'm going to see it first in the theaters, nothing beats watching a movie on a large screen (visually that is, because some of the theaters have freakin' audio equipment). Then I'm gonna get the DVD.

I know there isnt much info yet on the disc (I doubt if production or planning has even started) but it would be interesting if it's going to have subtitles. I mean, subtitles on a movie with subtitles 'burned' permanently on film. :D Also, the audio: I wonder what the options would be. Would there be like an English track? Doubtful, considering that when they do plan on putting in one it will definitely kill the essence that made the film special. Ano kayang lalabas sa audio options? ARAMAIC : 2 channel/5.1 channel AC3 audio or ARAMAIC : 5.1 DTS Surround Sound? :D Guess we'll have to wait and see. ;)

20th Century Fox announced that the R1 version of The Passion of the Christ will be released on August 31, 2004.  According to Digital Bits, looks like this release will have very few extras (if any) and "a more elaborate special edition release is in the works, for a possible Easter 2005 release".   ...

Mabuti naman at sinasabi kaagad nila na magkakaroon ng dalawang release para hindi natin masabi that they are forcing us to make a "double dip".  Siguro Ash Wednesday 2005 lalabas ang Special Edition.

Sa 2nd release na lang siguro ako for 2 reasons:

1.  Syempre mas OK kung may Special Features.
2.  Mas OK panoorin ito sa lenten season.

from www.thedigitalbits.com:

20th Century Fox has revealed that they'll be releasing Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ on DVD on 8/31 (SRP $29.98). There will be few (if any) extras, so that the maximum video bit rate can be achieved for the film presentation. The disc will include both anamorphic widescreen and full frame versions, as well as audio in the original Aramaic/Latin in both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround (with English and Spanish subs). Sources are telling us that a more elaborate special edition release is in the works, for a possible Easter 2005 release.

If I recall right, they used a mix of both.  Hebrew among the jews and latin when talking to the romans.  Even the covnersation between Pilate and Jesus was in Latin.

But historically, it should have been Greek - the de facto international language of trade and commerce equivalent to English at that time.  But whether hebrew or latin, they both sound greek to me.  ;D

The DVD is a very well made DVD.

Video transfer is almost like the HD version (released on D-Theater). DVD sounds better though!

A little intentional graininess at the start but everything came to proper light in the daylight scenes.

Man! The sound!

I felt the pain of all those lashes cutting through the air!  The movement is well tracked in your surrounds.

Bass is subtle but it's there when it kicks in!

Is it just me or is there really something weird about the audio tracks. When I compared the DD and DTS audio tracks it seems DD sounded much better. Anyone of you had the same observation?

Uh ok, sorry, i thought that round thing at the lower right of the back cover signifies something which is not R1... anyway, since it's full screen, guess I'm not interested...

"The Passion of the Christ

We have received a few more details on the upcoming The Passion of the Christ: The Definitive Edition. We previously announced that the two-disc set would contain an anamorphic widescreen transfer, Aramaic Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS Surround tracks and English subtitles.

We can now tell you that the set will feature both the original and 2005's less splattery "The Passion Recut" versions. Bonus materials will include an audio commentary track with director Mel Gibson (not fully confirmed yet), deleted scenes, a thorough making-of documentary, featurettes, an art gallery, trailers and more. Look for it on February 6th, 2007 with a retail of $26.98."

You guys think Gibson's anti-Semitic remarks will affect sales of this title, or have people already forgotten about his drunken tirade and shifted their attention to Kramer?
Title: Re: The Passion of the Christ

My belief is that it will not affect the sale of this one.  Those who are affected by those anti-semitic remarks probably passed on this film in the first place.    After all, the film had already been labeled as such by some...

If however Mel Gibson would make another 'religion-themed' movie, there would be less supporters...

i plan to double dip on this one but i will probably wait for the region 3 version...................................

if i am not mistaken, the original version of this dvd was the first one from holywood to have filipino subtitles..............

Sana nga Viva will re-release this film...  after all the Philippines is predominantly Christian, so such a film has a ready market.   But given Viva's track record, I am not betting on it.

Fox films often have Tagalog subs for their R3s.  Sound of Music, X-Men, Passion of the Christ...all Fox titles.

I preordered mine (R1 from Amazon)...

question po: why is it listed in amazon that the definitive collection has 126 minutes while the first release has 127 minutes. what's the 1 min. time difference? or was it a mistake?
Title: Re: The Passion of the Christ
Post by: techdude on Apr 17, 2009 at 09:41 PM
The definitive version includes a 'Recut' version that is less bloody (I think it's the scourging at the pillar scene that was shortened).  That MIGHT explain the one minute differential though I am not sure.  Most reviews says that the Definitive version is not better than the original version when it comes to PQ (The original is barebones while the Definitive version fit in commentaries on the same disc).   Buy the DE only if you are interested in the extra features.
