Starz Greenlights Series Adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods
June 16, 2015
Starz has given a greenlight to FremantleMedia North America’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed contemporary fantasy novel “American Gods.” Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) and Michael Green (“The River,” “Kings,” “Heroes”), will pen and showrun the series. Gaiman will also executive produce the series. FremantleMedia North America will produce. Start of production is dependent on casting the lead role of Shadow Moon.
Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said, “STARZ is committed to bring ‘American Gods’ to its legions of fans. With our partners at FremantleMedia and with Bryan, Michael and Neil guiding the project, we hope to create a series that honors the book and does right by the fans, who have been casting it in their minds for years. The search for Shadow begins today!”
Commented Neil Gaiman, “I am thrilled, scared, delighted, nervous and a ball of glorious anticipation. The team that is going to bring the world of ‘American Gods’ to the screen has been assembled like the master criminals in a caper movie: I’m relieved and confident that my baby is in good hands. Now we finally move to the exciting business that fans have been doing for the last dozen years: casting our Shadow, our Wednesday, our Laura…”
Commented Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, “Almost 15 years ago, Neil Gaiman filled a toy box with gods and magic and we are thrilled to finally crack it open and play. We’re grateful to have STARZ above us and FremantleMedia at our backs as we appease the gods, American or otherwise.”
Craig Cegielski, Co-CEO, FremantleMedia North America said “’American Gods’ has been the passion project for us at FMNA since Stefanie Berk brought this exceptional piece of literature to the company when she joined two years ago. Chris, Carmi and the entire team at Starz are committed partners, sharing the same creative vision and ambition for this series. Neil’s novel is a brilliant work of art, and together with the talented Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, we are committed to delivering a series that is nothing short of extraordinary.”
The 2001 novel has been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.
FremantleMedia North America’s Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk will executive produce the series along with Bryan Fuller, Michael Green and Neil Gaiman. Senior Vice President of Original Programming Ken Segna will be the Starz executive in charge of “American Gods.” Starz will retain all network pay TV and SVOD rights to the project. FremantleMedia will distribute the series worldwide.

Finally. I hope that the adaptation will be spot on with minimal or no drastic changes from the source material.

‘American Gods’ Casts Its Shadow
“American Gods,” Starz’s TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s beloved fantasy novel, has cast Ricky Whittle in the lead role of Shadow Moon, the premium cabler announced Thursday.
Gaiman said in a statement, “I’m thrilled that Ricky has been cast as Shadow. His auditions were remarkable. The process of taking a world out of the pages of a book, and putting it onto the screen has begun. ‘American Gods’ is, at its heart, a book about immigrants, and it seems perfectly appropriate that Shadow will, like so much else, be Coming to America. I’m delighted Ricky will get to embody Shadow. Now the fun starts.”
Showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green added, “We searched every continent and country and all the islands in between for our Shadow Moon, and we are lucky to have found Ricky. Fans of the novel will find he has every bit of the heart of the character they fell in love with.”

As Laura Moon, Emily Browning plays Shadow Moon’s wife, who has been preparing for her husband’s pending prison release. Little does she know that she will go on an unexpected journey that leads her to an epiphany about her relationship and affords her a second chance to get things right.

Orlando Jones Joins the American Gods Cast
June 15, 2016
Starz and FremantleMedia North America (FMNA) announced today that Orlando Jones (Madiba, Sleepy Hollow) will play Mr. Nancy in the upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed contemporary fantasy novel, American Gods.
Jones will play Mr. Nancy, the old African trickster god more commonly known as Anansi, and one of Mr. Wednesday’s (Ian McShane) oldest confidantes. Like Wednesday, Nancy is ready to bring this new America (and its new gods) to its knees, desperate to light a fire and watch the whole world burn.
Demore Barnes (12 Monkeys) has also been added to the cast as Mr. Ibis, the keeper of stories, past and present, and he recounts them with great relish. His old fashioned sensibilities do not preclude a wry wit.

I'm actually quite surprised that a Sandman adaptation hasn't come out at all on tv or the silver screen.
They have been trying since the early 2000's with different creative teams coming & going for a TV and/or movie adaptation. No success so far. The last ones who exited the project was director-producer Joseph Gordon-Levitt and writer Eric Heisserer, who both cited creative differences with the studio. Many say the Sandman books might be unfilmable.

Ang gulo!
-
Watch an episode of Ash vs Evil dead first then this one then tell me its gory. Hehe.
Ok nice first episode yes magulo dahil sa vignettes and the "came out of nowhere" intro ni t-boy pero I think this will be the overall feel of the series. Stories of how Gods are made and became strong and somehow be forgotten. Welcome to Gamain's mythology.
-
Saw it. What just happened? Lol

Awesome series! If done well this can rival GOT.

laki ng tinanda ng itsura ni Emily Browning at naging sobrang sakang niya.
-
So si Laura pala yung pumatay sa mga androids ni Technical Boy--that was an awesome scene
laki ng tinanda ng itsura ni Emily Browning at naging sobrang sakang niya.
Pumayat siya; I saw her last in Sucker Punch, medyo healthier pa siya doon.
-
who'd thought violet baudelaire would turn up this way?
still, that was an awesome e04!
-
Watched ep3-4 and skipped some scenes sa ep3, thanks sa warning. Kelan ba ang ep5?
-
This show gets better and better each episode! (minus that Jinn scene on 03) and WEIRDER!
Galing ni Scully! I love all the characters here.
-
The guy they cast as Technical Boy has a highly punchable face, Gillian Anderson deserves an Emmy nomination for her Lucy Ricardo/David Bowie/Marilyn Monroe performance ... and that's not the way I wanted to see Emily Browning naked, LOL
-
I think hindi totoo yung chest na pinakita niya? Part of prosthetics na sinuot niya ata?
totoo ata based sa mga nabasa ko. cute ones she has :)
Gillian anderson took this to another level! Galing niya.
This show is like an awesomely weird acid trip!
-
Dunno. Kailangan ba nilang gawing isang person lang si Lucy and Marilyn Monroe? She got Lucy, but Marilyn is young, medyo tanders na ang face at built ni Scully. And I prefer a less familiar artist to play Mr World, like how Shadow and Wednesdays are casted. Kulang na lang may hawak na buhok si World habang inaamoy (refering to him as Mr Thin Man of Charlies angels).
As for Laura Moon, may movie sya Sleeping Beauty (2011). Walang syang scars dun.
-
Is this show worth the time? I might download it >:D
-
^^ It's worth it, ingat ka lang sa episode 3 XD
-
Ep6 is out. Mapapa jeez wtf ka sa simula, pero may nasabi na si Wednesday tungkol dun. And im beginning to like the leprechaun, click sila ni leprekunt hehe.
-
Plot development has been slower than I thought. And it's probably because they want to stretch out the book's storyline to as many episodes as possible.
Two episodes left to go!
-
awesome season finale :O

-
Great season 1. Waiting mode for season 2.
-
ha? tapos na ito hanggang ep 8 lng sila nabitin ako hehe ;D
-
si Upham pala yung Jesus Prime XD he looks familiar hehe
-
Ep7 still has a lot of Lauras pokies, and a lot of getting humped from different guys. Ep8, zero Laura pokies, a hump scene. And a whole year of waiting for S2. They should be seriously considering a Sandman series by now.
And while I wait, I will look for my Queen.

‘American Gods’: Michael Green & Bryan Fuller Exit As Showrunners Of Starz Series
Michael Green and Bryan Fuller, the masterminds behind Starz’s American Gods, have exited the big-budget drama series. We hear the duo informed the cast of their departure today.
Fuller and Green created the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s 2001 award-winning novel and served as executive producers/showrunners on the show, which debuted this past spring and earned a quick Season 2 renewal. We hear more than half of the scripts for Season 2, which had been targeting a mid-2018 premiere, have been written. Gaiman may come on board as a co-showrunner but that is in flux as he also has series Good Omens for Amazon.
Word is that, with Green and Fuller working on multiple projects — including the high-profile Amazing Stories reboot at Apple for Fuller and a sequel to Orient Express for Green — Season 2 has not been moving fast enough for producer Fremantle Media North America, which led to the showrunner change.

American Gods Season Two Adds Three Key Cast Members
While the sophomore season of the Starz adaptation of American Gods might have lost two stars and original showrunners, it has just added three new cast members for key guest and recurring roles.
Dean Winters (John Wick), Devery Jacobs (Mohawk Girls) and Kahyun Kim (Shameless) have been cast as Mr. Town, Sam Black Crow and New Media, with Kim taking on the role following Gillian Anderson’s departure from the series last year.
The second season of the acclaimed Neil Gaiman adaptation will see Mr. World (Crispin Glover, Back to the Future) task Mr. Town with tracking down Shadow (Ricky Whittle, The 100) and finding out what he knows about Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane, Deadwood)’s plan. Town’s methods are brutally efficient and may help him get to the root of his and World’s curious questions.
First Nations actress Jacobs will portray Sam Black Crow, a college student that is spiritually cynical for someone, despite claiming to believe in so much. She lives life with fierce confidence and openness, selling the chainsaw art she carves by the roadside for extra money.
Kim will take on the recurring role of New Media, the goddess of global content — and in this age, a cyberspace chameleon, who is also a master of manipulation. She will be a new, younger version of the character following Anderson’s portrayal of Media in season one.
The second season of American Gods is set to debut on Starz sometime in 2019.

Kristin Chenoweth Will Not Return for American Gods Season 2
In an interview with TVLine, Emmy Award winning actress Kristin Chenoweth has revealed that she won’t be returning to the upcoming second season of Starz’s critically-acclaimed fantasy drama American Gods. Her decision came following the sudden departure of original co-creator Bryan Fuller, whom Chenoweth is close friends with.
“I couldn’t come back without him,” Chenoweth said. “It wouldn’t be right.”
Chenoweth played the role of the goddess of spring and resurrection named Easter who appeared in season one’s eighth episode. Before Fuller and Michael Green’s departure, she was originally set to return for several Season 2 episodes.
“Let me just say this: Those people are also my family,” Chenoweth added. “It came out of [author Neil] Gaiman’s brain, who is a genius.” She added that she wants the show to be a success for the people who are still involved with it. “But ultimately…I mean, Bryan’s my guy.”

‘American Gods’ Likely Blessed For Season 3 Renewal From Starz
Nothing is written on stone tablets yet, but a third season of American Gods looks to be a divine certainty. “We didn’t make Season 2 of American Gods not to make a Season 3,” a source close to the production told Deadline of the Starz series based on Neil Gaiman’s award-winning 2001 novel. “It’s a big book.”
With that top of mind, the premium cabler is searching to find a showrunner for a third season, I hear. With some top-tier candidates in the mix and in talks, that quest is centered in many ways on securing someone who can bring the ensemble series led by Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane in on budget and on time.
Starz declined comment on the status of a possible Season 3 of American Gods when contacted by Deadline today.
The No. 1 concern for any third season of the FremantleMedia North America-produced show, we hear, is a near overwhelming issue of timing. No one involved wants to see a repeat of the nearly two-year gap between the Bryan Fuller- and Michael Green-run series premiere and Season 2’s March 10 debut. To that end, sources say whoever makes the final list must have a “rock solid blueprint in place” before a official greenlight will be given.
Almost from the beginning, American Gods has been envisioned as a five or six season show, I’m told.

‘American Gods’ Canceled After Third Season at Starz
“American Gods” has been canceled at Starz.
The series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name will not return for a fourth season. However, sources tell Variety that the network is open to a potential event series or movie to wrap up any loose ends.
“American Gods will not return for a fourth season. Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman’s ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country,” a spokesperson for Starz said in a statement.
Sources say the decision not to continue with a fourth season was made due to low viewership, with multiplatform viewership declining 65% from the show’s first season to its third.

‘American Gods’ Producers Fremantle Reiterate Neil Gaiman’s Pledge For More Of Canceled Starz Series
Two days after Starz made public its lack of faith in any more seasons of American Gods, producers Fremantle on Wednesday said the series based on Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed novel is still alive and kicking.
“Fremantle is committed to completing the epic journey that is American Gods, one of TV’s most inclusive series with the most amazing fans across the globe,” a spokesperson for the company told Deadline of a possible fourth season or more. “With Neil Gaiman and this fantastic cast and crew, we are exploring all options to continue to tell this magnificent story.”
The statement today backs remarks made Tuesday by EP Gaiman that the Ricky Whittle- and Ian McShane-led series wasn’t going quietly into the premium cable night.
Two early possibilities for more American Gods that may be coming into focus are Netflix and Amazon, we hear. The former is already making a series based on Gaiman’s beloved Sandman comics series and would like to do further business with the author. The latter had served as the home of American Gods everywhere but in America, with new episodes of the three seasons of the show debuting on the Jeff Bezos-founded platform the day after they debuted on Starz.
