Title: Filipino Film input needed
Post by: jcranma on Jun 09, 2009 at 03:56 AM
Guys, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the following films. Since a relative is going back home this summer, I've decided to pick up a couple of film not readily available in the US. The films are:

Kubrador
Tirador
Tribu
100
Endo
Tambolista
Pisay
Foster Child
Concerto
Batanes
Bayaning 3rd World

Are there more indies that I should know about out on DVD or VCD? I didn't include Star/Regal/GMA offerings because I can watch them through Netflix even though their acquisition of big studio Filipino films has slowed down a bit the last 10 months or so (with the exception of Richard Gutierrez romcoms). Thanks for the input.

BTW what would be the price range of the films I listed either on DVD or VCD?

Films available on VCD or DVD with price range:
100 (DVD) -  < 451 php
Bayaning 3rd World (DVD) - < 151 php
Kubrador (DVD) - < 351 php
Tirador (VCD) - < 251 php

The following have not been released locally on VCD or DVD:
Tribu
Endo
Tambolista
Pisay
Foster Child
Concerto
Batanes (Not sure if already released. Don't bother with it as it is not as good as the other films. Just wait for a cable screening)

Check out this link for other independent films released on VCD or DVD (http://www.pinoydvd.com/index.php?topic=59170.0)

Batanes is out on local DVD, but not sure of the price. Agree though that it is not a very good movie.

Thanks Film Angel and Jas. The link is helpful as well along with the threads of the Pinoy DVD board.

It's a bit disappointing that many of those films have not received DVD releases. I wrongly assumed that 2007 Cinemalaya entries would have been out to buy/rent by now.

As a guide, you can check out www.kabayancentral.com to see which titles are available locally.
As far as I'm aware they are based in Manila.
