whats a good upgrade for a stock dared mp5?
-
I suggest enjoy the stock version 1st...then maybe after after 3-6months, upgrade it...PM JojoD818 for details, thanks! Merry Christmas! :D
-
hehe thinking of going at it na agad... had the whole today to listen to it.... looking for an upgrade to make it a little more warmer sa mids. thanks :)
-
changed a pair of caps to auricap, didnt like the change in sound, so im placing the old caps back. was happy with the upgrade of 6n1 tube, changed mine with a NOS philips miniwatt, it smoothened the highs and made the mids fatter. i suggest tube roll first before changing other parts, you might already the sound you want
-
just want fatter mids and smoothened highs?
-
it's actually a tube hybrid gainclone in a small package. it uses a single chip from SGS Thomson that contains both channels in one package. this is (most of the time) the limiting factor for the output power, not much chips out there with a lot of power in a single package. the tube frontend is a bit different but has very low gain nonetheless, much like a buffer for the chipamp.
very cute looking amp, sexy on the inside too.
-
hi ctlim superman is right try to enjoy it muna and get familiar with it, then after maybe you can try to tube roll. There are some nos ecc85 tube sa tubedepot.com, but i haven't tried it yet.

You need to be familiar with the stock sound in order for you to appreciate the upgrades, heres my suggested step-by-step upgrades:
1. Change the stock tubes to NOS (if not yet happy proceed to 2)
2. Change the audio path caps to Auricap if you want extreme go with M-Cap Silver or silver gold (not yet contented)
3. Change Resistors to Kiwame or better (if not yet happy)
4. Change wirings using Silver wires a (not yet happy)
5. Change the whole thing ;D Time to upgrade your system

hi,
just wanted to ask. i saw the dared mp5 in s&s last weekend. they sell it for 8.8k which i thought was a good price and the looks are good as well. however, i didnt get a chance to audition it thoroughly. need your opinion if these are worth purchasing because i have fairly newbie audio ears. based on the thread it seems that people arent too satisfied w the sound... or at least the sound using the stock tubes...tama ba ako??? thanks for any advice. :)
-
of course not. satisfied kami... makulit lang. ;D
http://wiredstate.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17665&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
read this.
-
I don't recall anyone saying na pangit yun stock tubes, but replacing them with nos types will improve on an otherwise already good sound.
I strongly suggest that you audition it as stock, it may very well be more than enough for your needs (just a suggestion). :)

From what I read, the MP5 sounds very good even with stock tubes. :)

For best price to value ratio for Dared mp5 we suggest use of mundorf mcap or at most supreme. Given the size of the amp i dont think the silver oil or silver gold will fit. And it might even cost more than the amp.
Audio Amp also carries Dared MP5 for those interested :) we can also do the upgrade for you.
umm... silver wires are kinda too extreeme
-
Hehe. sorry. i must have misunderstood the thread. ;D did have a chance to surf for reviews and all are pretty wowed by it. especially for the value for money. will definately audition it longer next time around. thanks
-
sir jojod
so its not really a tube amp is it...
-
just curious, can you bridge the output of this amp? ???

sir jojod

It's not, it's more of a tube hybrid gainclone. :)
just curious, can you bridge the output of this amp? ???
No you cannot, unless you modify it. :)

sir, how much would this upgrade cost? and what would be the sound benefit?

Just wondering, any new twist/ mods/ updates on this amp? Is it still worth the hype before? Tnx ::)

Sirs,
I've been into HT systems for so many years, but haven't ventured on tube amps or a hybrid such as the Dared MP5 .... after reading so many things and reviews about this amp, i'm itching to dip into this arena just to experience it.
I have a newbie question though before I start on this venture ... what kind of speakers are recommended for this amps? ... I currently have an HT setup using Denon 1909 AVR and Dali Concept 6 speakers for front - can this Dared MP5 be able to power the Dali Concept 6 speakers? (Following are the specs of the Concept 6 for your reference - Freq. Resp. 41-25,000Hz; Sensitivity - 91dB; impedance - 8 ohms; floor standing; recommended amp. power is 30-150W)
Another newbie question - The Dali Concept 6 speakers that I have have two terminal inputs ... does it mean that I can connect the speakers simultaneously to 2 different amplifiers? If that is the case, is there a risk of damaging the speakers or the 2 amps if accidentally switched-on at the same time?
TIA
-
auditioned a Dared MP5 with my celestion floorstanders with a 92db sensitivity rating just recently. Yes it can drive the speaker to more than adequate levels given the size of my living room so im sure that it too can drive your Dali's however i would suggest that you dont wire it in such a way that both your HT receiver and tube integrated are both plugged in to the Dali. A lot can go wrong :). The MP5 is a hybrid and a pure SET setup will sound a lot different than the hybrid if you are looking for that tube sound. There is a second hand TS Audio 34.1 SET integrated being sold at Wiredstate for a great price. That integrated will outgun the MP5 in all aspects. I lived with that integrated for 2 years and up to now i do regret selling it here in PDVD. Look it up under the thread of Sig8 if im not mistaken.
Here is a review:

Sir,
Thanks for the feedback ... I've been reading that the recommended specs for the speakers mostly mentioned the sensitivity, hence I made the inquiry on my previous post ... if wiring a speaker connected to 2 amps is not recommended, I'll probably just get dedicated bookshelf speakers for the Dared MP5 - any recommendations or speaker specs?

this is the thread I've been looking for!
i'm a veteran of the HTIB scene as well as car audio but VERY new when it comes to tubes and the finer things of audio.
I was able to audition these very briefly at SnS with Paradigm speakers. I'm sold!
i'm just about to get the MP-5 and I do have some questions:
1. What's the difference between a Class D amp (ie Trends T-amp) and a Class AB amp (mp5)? In car audio terms we use class D for mostly mono sub amps.
2. sensitivity rating. The higher the better? I also observed they're usually more expensive. What is the lowest "allowable" (by your standards) should someone consider?
3. The USB slots indicate that this would be a good alternative to my Pc's Klipsch ProMedia 5.1. Given that I will use these as part of my new PC Speaker setup do you think this would be advisable? Will the relative proximity of the user to the speakers / monitor hinder the sound? Is this setup even advisable?
4. What brand new speakers would you recommend for this? Up to 5k? Up to 10k? 15K?
5. Interconnects. Would the stock ones last me awhile? Any recommendations on this?
6. There were reviews online that said it came with Sennheiser headphones. Is this true?
7. There are a couple of inputs. Obviously I want to connect it via USB to my PC, but what if I want to connect my ipod to it? Is there a switch somewhere for this or do I yank out the USB?
Lots of questions I know.. sorry.
I'm just so excited about this unit!
thanks for the replies!

how much ang mp5 amigo? before you buy it, baka type mong mag audition ng totoong tube amp like AMX (Kinetic) sa Rob Pioneer? konting dagdag na lang may tube int amp ka na. ;)

9.8k - 10% cash discount

I'm slightly considering the following speakers for the MP5:
1. Wharf 9.1
2. Mission V4 (although can't seem to find this model anywhere online)
3. Mssion M3(dami pala variations ng M3.. don't know which one )
4. Paradigm Atom (funny, online it's less than $200usd pero ang laki ng taas ng presyo dito unlike all the other speakers)
Can I have your thoughts on these?
thanks sa mga replies talaga! :)
-
Tested my 9.1 on an MP5, can fill a 3x3 meter room with gusto. Check mo lang muna kung magustuhan mo sound ng Wharfs or better yet try all of the speakers in your list with an MP5...

I'm thinking of pairing these speakers with the Dared MP5 - any feedback on performance or any comments ...recommendations also welcome (budget of 10k-15k on speakers)

Maganda yan. Great reviews from those who purchased the speakers. However if I were you id go full SET tube rather than hybrid. Dared also makes such models if im not mistaken. Its just a few thousand pesos off your budget however the sound that an SET makes is incomparable to the MP5 at least to my ears.

Sir, any recommendations and estimated price for an entry level SET tube amp? PhP 8k+ lang kasi yung Dared MP5 kaya it got my interest ... i have no idea on the prices of the SET tube amps...TIA

I think master rene selling the mp-15 for only 18t ;) Yeah SETs sounds better imhe but lacks in power nga lang but if paired with high sensitivity speakers then Im sure youll be happy with it, tipid pa sa electical consumption :D
As bro syncro suggested there is a TS34.1 SEP amp selling for only 14t, its 2x9w that is very good. There is also a Kef Q1 that you can pair with the TS, for less than 30t may decent tube setup ka na ;)

my neo10 diy speakers are 93db sensitive pero bitin sa tubes (6bq5/el84.6v6) yes tube amps can drive the neo10s but they cant squeeze out the juice :) unlike the nadc325bee. pag nagPP naman (el34/6550 etc) eh nawawala ang sweetness, di na nalalayo sa good SS amp (vintage)...i think back in the 50's 60's tubes were really made for highly sensitive speakers (SET with 100db+horns)....as the venerable but eccentric Paul Klipsch once said to the effect: What America needs is a good 5watt amplifier" ;D
its all about matching gears. tradeoffs & compromises here and there. ok sa clarity & details pero bitin sa bass/lf. ok sa bass/lf pero di gaano mahugot ang detalye etc... whats impt to me is the critical midrange :)

No ulit sir... most likely substitute would be a 6922/6dj8 tube but I can't remember the exact plate voltage of the tubes used in the MP5 so I cannot give a sure recommendation. The usual disclaimer applies.

Alloa all ...
I currently have a Dared MP5 reserved for purchase, am researching for a nice pair of speakers to match them with. What speakers would be recommended? ^^

I've heard them power Klipsch Reference and Polk TSi towers without a problem basta maliit lang ang room. Kung bigger rooms siguro or kung malakas ka patugtog hanap ka ng sensitive speaks. It's better to hear them for yourself siyempre.

Thanks for the info bro. Hmm ... gaano kaliit ang maliit? Rough estimate ko dun sa room ko is 4x5 meters, maybe smaller. Pasok na kaya yun? ???

A single-ended PENTODE such as the MP15 is different from a single-ended TRIODE such as those based on a 2A3, 45, 300B, 50, etc. As you are well aware of, single-ended triodes need efficient and high-sensitivity speakers to sing.
The Dared MP5 is a good compromise, utilizing the tube front end and SS power amplifier.

Hmm ... from what I've read, discontinued na ang production nya, so baka mahirap nang maghanap ng brand new talaga. If I remember right, ang banggit sa akin ni mardon, sa watt hifi nya nabili yung unit nya.
Meron din ako nakita dito sa forums na post about an MP5 clone :

Watt hifi din yung nabanggit na seller.
Hope that helps ;)

i read somewhere that the MP-5 is also a clone of the fatman i-tube amp. saw this amp at 5th ave. yun nga lang the MP-5 is the most reasonably priced among them.

Actually, Dared makes for fatman tube - the reason na parang inalis ni dared sa catalogs nya si MP5 is because the european company fatman wants dared to make only for them.

almost a year into my dared mp5 I think I can answer some of MY OWN questions already.
For those lang shempre who have newly discovered the Dared MP5 and had similar questions to what I had.
====
1. What's the difference between a Class D amp (ie Trends T-amp) and a Class AB amp (mp5)? In car audio terms we use class D for mostly mono sub amps.
I never got around to trying out the Trends T-amp in a home setup. I tried it out sa SnS when I was doing a side by side comparison between that and the Dared. The sound is very different even when the same source is used. My preference obviously went to the Dared.
2. sensitivity rating. The higher the better? I also observed they're usually more expensive. What is the lowest "allowable" (by your standards) should someone consider?
The higher the better specially for the Dared MP5.
It's a very good alternative to the Klipsch Promedia 5.1 thx. I use it mainly for sound tripping on FLAC audio. So it's definitely advisable. The listener's relative proximity to the speakers is a bit problematic since you don't get to listen to the best sound. You need a comfortable computer chair with wheels. This way once you hear a good recording you can scoot back and listen from a far. An additional 5 feet away from the speakers makes a WORLD of difference! However, this setup is still advisable.
4. What brand new speakers would you recommend for this? Up to 5k? Up to 10k? 15K?
I auditioned a number of speakers. I tried somewharfdales, paradigm, mission, klipsch, infinity. In the end I went with the Paradigm Atom v5. They're not the most expensive ones nor the cheapest one either. But price / performance - wise it got my vote. It took awhile to break-in the system but after awhile the sound just blossomed. It sounds great. A bit lacking on the bass but that's acceptable for me since I didn't have it in a fully ideal environment.
5. Interconnects. Would the stock ones last me awhile? Any recommendations on this?
Didn't bother with stock wires. I immediately got gold plated banana plugs and some good wiring.
6. There were reviews online that said it came with Sennheiser headphones. Is this true?
mine didn't come with headphones. I don't think anyone else's came with it.
7. There are a couple of inputs. Obviously I want to connect it via USB to my PC, but what if I want to connect my ipod to it? Is there a switch somewhere for this or do I yank out the USB?
there's a small switch at the back
Overall I love my dared mp5. I'm half hearted about going for an upgrade :)
=========
this is the thread I've been looking for!
i'm a veteran of the HTIB scene as well as car audio but VERY new when it comes to tubes and the finer things of audio.
I was able to audition these very briefly at SnS with Paradigm speakers. I'm sold!
i'm just about to get the MP-5 and I do have some questions:

Lots of questions I know.. sorry.
I'm just so excited about this unit!
thanks for the replies!

Some additional notes by someone who (used to) own a Dared MP5.. ;)
1. The USB input on the MP5 is nice and convenient, but there's a noticeable improvement by having a separate source feeding it the analog signal instead of using its USB DAC.
Sound is fuller, and more rich, and that's just using my nearly 6 year old PC soundcard.
2. Replacing the stock tubes is a worthwhile upgrade.
Overall I love my dared mp5. I'm half hearted about going for an upgrade
True that. I've since "upgraded" to a multi channel setup for HT, but I still miss the little bugger for music listening at times. :D

Sir,
I just want to make some clarifications on the feedback as I am planning to try this out ... I'm planning to get a Dared MP5 for pairing with an iPod - does the iPod connect to the USB or analog auxiliary at the back of the unit?
If it's on the analog, does it not defeat the purpose of utilizing the better performing DAC of the Dared MP5 compared to that of the iPod?
TIA
-
Afaik, you connect it to the analogue input. You can use a dock, in case you want to bypass the headphone out circuitry.
I think the built-in dac would only interface with a computer via USB.

it seems this is the case, i used to own a dared mp5 and when i driectly used the USB to the ipod, it didnt work so i ended up using the analog in through an ipod dock

where can I audition this Dared MP5? I might get one...if budget permits... ;D

wala siyang sariling headphone amp, meron lang impedance equalizer at dropping resistor yun gainclone amp niya.

hi sir jojo! hmmm parang nabasa ko kasi sa specs nya na may headphone amp sya. if i were to use them, will i get the "tube sound" o dekorasyon lang yung tubes nya?

meron siyang headphone out, hindi headphone amp. the headphone out is derived from the very same amp that drives the speakers via dropping resistors, I'm staring at the schematics now. (please don't ask me to post or send it out as they will be mad at me if I do.)
to answer your question, yes dadaan siya sa tubes and you'll still get that tube buffered sound as well if you use the headphone out. :)

now have an office audio/headphone setup --> MP5 paired with Alessandro MS1 and Nationite N2 as source. i like the "airiness" it brought to my previous laptop-MS1 combo.

love the dared mp5. seems like im upgrading it forever. every upgrade just keeps getting better. =)

Meron pa yata sir kay Rex MCS watt hifi

how much yung MP5 ngayon?

whats a good upgrade for a stock dared mp5?
you may want to replace the chinese 6n1p with the russian 6n1p, they are very cheap on the net....
else you may want to try the russian 6n23, or the 6922, 6j8/7dj8......
-
it seems this is the case, i used to own a dared mp5 and when i driectly used the USB to the ipod, it didnt work so i ended up using the analog in through an ipod dock
yes, i had a chance to look at one last night and i can not make out where that usb goes to....
-
just curious, can you bridge the output of this amp? ???
any amp can be bridged....
-
btw, the Sakura AV200 and this Dared5 amps have a lot in common,
they both SS and tube hybrids, the dared used gainclones, the 7265,
while the Sakura used discrete transistors....
they both use the 6n1p buffer tubes....
power is about the same at around 25 watts per channel...
-
^ Dared benefits with a USB input and Headphones out.
AV200 benefits with bass and treble control.
Sir Tony, who would you say among the two have a better wiring/implementation design?
-
Dared....but the latest version of the AV200 i have seen are quite advanced in terms of construction....
-
Thank you Sir Tony.

should both need modification also?
-
yes, i had a chance to look at one last night and i can not make out where that usb goes to....
kakaasar nga hindi pwede sa portable players tsk tsk... pang laptop lang. :(
-
should both need modification also?
the only mod will recommend is to try Russian or American tubes for the 6N1P buffers...
for the Dared, a better quality volume pot will go a long way...
come to think of it, why will you buy something so that you can tinker with it?
to me buy it if you like how it sounds or if you can afford it....
5k is not so expensive....
even with tube rolling, i have seen many here who ended up buying and selling tubes,
is that what they really want....? ;D
then after a while sold their amps, aba, swerte naman nung nakabile....
still there are those who after installing boutique caps in their amps ended up selling their gears,
and at a loss at that..... :o

so, who's selling one now? :)

Buhayin ko lang ang thread na 'to kasi namatay na yata si MP5 ko, huhuhu.
Actually, umiilaw at umiinit pa naman ang 3 tubes. Kaso no sound. Wala din maski sa headphone. Wala lang akong new tubes to test. Tube na kaya mismo ang sira? Tia.
-
malamang patay na ang gainclone chip nyan....papalitan mo na lang sa technician...
hindi madaling masira ang tubes..
