CBS is developing a brand new Star Trek TV series that will premiere first on the network in January 2017 then move exclusively to their CBS All Access video on-demand and streaming service. According to their press release, the new series "will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966."
The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond, which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.
-
Initial reports state that the new series will be set in the original continuity, rather than the rebooted JJ Abrams movie universe, and will take place before the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation and after Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
Interestingly enough, those reports also say that the new series will be a seasonal anthology, meaning that the show could jump to different time periods and different casts every season.

Netflix Lands International Rights to New Star Trek Series
July 18, 2016
Though the series will be premiering in the US on CBS All Access, Netflix and CBS Studios International today announced a landmark international licensing agreement for the new Star Trek television series. Netflix will be the exclusive premiere home of Star Trek in 188 countries (excluding the US and Canada). Each episode of the new series will be available globally within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere.
The all-new Star Trek will begin production in Toronto in September for its January 2017 premiere. The iconic and influential global franchise will return to television for the first time since 2005 with a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation.
Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller are co-creators and executive producers for the new Star Trek series, based on Gene Roddenberry’s original series.

CBS Studios announced at Comic-Con that the new Star Trek television series will be titled STAR TREK DISCOVERY!
The all-new Star Trek will begin production in Toronto in September for its January 2017 premiere. The iconic and influential global franchise will return to television for the first time since 2005 with a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation. Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, American Gods) will serve as showrunner.
“One of the things that is exciting for me is that we are telling a ‘Star Trek’ story in a modern way,” Fuller previously told Moviefone. “We’re telling a 13-chapter story in this first season. It’s nice to be able to dig deep into things that would have been breezed passed if we were doing episodic and had to contain a story to an episode. We are going to be continuing [Star Trek’s] tradition of progressive casting and progressive character work to be an inclusive world. That’s the most promising thing that ‘Star Trek’ offers, is a vision of the future where we do all get along.”

Previously scheduled for January 2017, the highly-anticipated Star Trek: Discovery will now launch in May 2017.
The new premiere date is driven by the belief of the creative team that this gives the show the appropriate time for delivery of the highest quality, premium edition of the first new “Star Trek” TV series in over a decade.

Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp Join the Star Trek: Discovery Cast
CBS has revealed two more additions to the new series. Doug Jones (Pan’s Labyrinth) will star as Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer and a new alien species to the Star Trek universe, while Anthony Rapp (Rent) will star as “Lt. Stamets,” an astromycologist, fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery. The character is presumably named for real life fungus expert Paul Stamets.
The Star Trek: Discovery cast update also reveals that Michelle Yeoh will be playing “Captain Georgiou,” the Starfleet Captain aboard the Starship Shenzhou. “Shenzou” is a Chinese word meaning “Divine Craft” that has also been lent to China’s current space program. Eleven Shenzhou missions have launched since 1999, with a planned flight in 2018 set to make an even dozen.

Sobrang dami na ng paid streaming services, it's getting more expensive to (legally) watch your favorite shows nowadays. Kaya naman people are turning to less than legal sources... :(

Episodes 1 & 2 now out....
-
Star Trek is Back! great production value and very cinematic, it's in the same vein as ds9, enterprise and tng.
-
Nice first two episodes :)
-
Watched the first episode last night. It was good!
-
Hard core trekkers and trekkies will have to suspend a bit more disbelief as this series is a bit... er... different.
-
im liking it... btw im not a trekkie
-
Pilot was very good, and seems to mimic the style of the JJ Abrams movies, with lens flares and all ... but the 2-hour premiere was more like a prequel to the actual series, which seems different in tone than the pilot, with only the main character Burnham and Lt. Commander Saru moving on to the main series. But I liked it though.
Also, Burnham turns into The Walking Dead's Sasha starting with next episode, LOL ;) ;D
-
...and seems to mimic the style of the JJ Abrams movies, with lens flares and all ...
This is what's bothering the nerds (me included).
-
Quite an enjoyable pilot! But then again, I'm a Star Trek fan.
-
badtrip naman kinuha pala nila si sasha from TWD. sobrang tuwa ko nung pinatay na nila 'yung babae eh, tapos maga-appear lang pala dito. sana patayin nila agad sa star trek.
-
Episode 3 is the real Pilot of the show--taking place 6 months later after the 2-hour prequel, it introduces the USS Discovery and her crew, and the actual premise of the TV series, which is a bit different than all the other Star Trek shows that came before it.
My main problem is the timeline--setting this TV series 10 years before the Original Series can be a bit of a stretch, since the technology seen and used here seems to be way more advanced than Kirk's era. Ah well, still good though.
-
She seems illogical.
-
She seems illogical.
She's human, after all.
-
- A female non-captain main protagonist. (still cant connect with the character as of yet though)
- A Captain with a seemingly devious agenda (rest of the crew does not appeal to me so far, although i feel that not all have been revealed)
- An appropriately named ship which seems to hold so much mysteries.
- Klingons that look like the stuff your nightmares are made of.
As a 25 year fan of the series, I'd say that this is exactly what this series needs.
So far, it is BOLDLY GOING WHERE THE SERIES HAS NEVER GONE BEFORE.
-
The USS Discovery has the shadow of Section 31 all over it.
-
What's your opinion on the spore travel technology? Did she actually travel to those places or were those just real-time visions of those places?
-

Too soon to make assumptions, but we can be certain that the plot is baked in for this season at least.
-
I am witholding my verdict until the series is done. ;)
-
anybody noticed na ang taas ng contrast ratio ng episodes? to the extent na andaming artifacts sa face ng characters that sometimes it looks pixelated na? or thats how the director wanted us to see it? dolby vision kasi e..
there are times parang VCD quality na sya..

It looks more like film grain, to me. Not unusual with high-contrast scenes, even when shot on digital. I have a weak internet connection pero 90% of the time the stream is in 720p and I can see the grain.
-
Is anyone watching this on 4K atm? Because I am also seeing artifacts (I am on the regular HD plan) and my internet speed is 100Mbps.
-
Bakit ba laging nega itong si sasha? Kakabanas na e.

Star Trek: Discovery Chapter 2 is set for a January 7, 2018 premiere.
The second chapter of Star Trek: Discovery begins with Episode 10, “Despite Yourself,” described as follows: “While in unfamiliar territory, the U.S.S. Discovery crew is forced to get creative in their next efforts to survive opposing and unprecedented forces and return home.”
-
So, is anyone still watching this? New plot twists in Chapter 2..

I thought Season 1 was okay, and I kept watching because the series was something different in a Trek show--Tyler's reveal as Voq was obvious, but Lorca's reveal as a villain and Mirror Georgiou's turn as Captain was something that I didn't expect.
Even the last minute of the season finale was a complete but welcome surprise, all the way to the ending credits 8)
Looking forward to Season 2

Gusto ko manood nito and the upcoming new series with Picard. Kaya lang medyo overwhelming yung backstory with the original series, TNG and the various spinoffs that I missed.
Will I understand the franchise if I start with Discovery?

I think ok lang naman. I don't consider myself a Trekkie, but I can say that I have appreciated the movies and some shows I've watched. You'll probably just miss some of the easter eggs occasionally thrown in by the shows.
