Gentlemen:
Please recommend a cdp under 15k (brand new, nos or pre-owned) which you think is stellar for its price. If possible please mention your partnering equipments.
Tnx

I totally agree. :)
Can't go wrong with Marantz CD5003, Cambridge 540C or NAD C515BEE with that budget.
The Marantz CD5001 (predecessor of the CD5003) is also selling for a very low price in some shops.

Ano amp and speakers ikakabit mo sir? Baka kasi may masuggest yung mga kasama natin dito na better match pang guide sa inyong mga papakinggan na gamit. Best pa rin siyempre na ikaw makarinig para sure ka na pasok sa gusto mo. :)
The 540c v2 is pretty close to the 640c v2 if the budget would accomodate the 540. Based on some listening I've done, the 340c does not seem to sound as 3-dimensional as the 540c v2 / 640c v2, but has a less forward sound (which may suit some people and speakers better).
If you're also interested in playing DVD-A and SACD discs, the DVD89 and DVD99 are excellent bargains. They actually cost less than the CD-only counterparts. They sound smoother and warmer overall, but aren't as intricately revealing. The chassis is also shorter than the rest of the Azur audio lineup (though the face matches). Btw, since they're DVD players, they can play DVDs and the video output is very good imo.
Mura nung nakita ni iiinas na 11k CD5003 sa harrison ah. Solid choice. :) Nad c515bee gives out a rich warm tone, which I think complements smaller bookshelves (like the partner c315bee amp).

I think the 540c v2 renders a nice stage depth for the price, but they sound quite forward, and can be aggressive when matched with the wrong components. I don't know how your current setup sounds in your room, but if you find it on the warm and laid back side, then this may complement your setup. 5th avenue carries both Teac and Cambridge, you can ask them to hookup a 540c and a Teac receiver for you to give you an idea of how the combination works. They also have Marantz units (mostly older ones though) that you can listen to, to see if their sonic signature works for you.
On the other hand, if you find your current system quite bright, then you can try the NAD C515BEE. It might be able to help tone down your overall sound.
-
marantz5001 - if u have laidback system
azur540c - if u have laidback system
rotel rcd06 - if u have laidback system
nad c542 - if u have forward/bright system
then again, the definition of laidback and forward or bright sound in systems would vary from person to person :)
hard to tell pero home audition mo na lang each of these options sir. im sure 1 of this will fit your taste.
goodluck
-
cambridge 540c is a good cdp
-
cambridge 540c is a good cdp
it is, provided your system isnt sounding forward, this cdp would add that floating vocals and emphasis on mids.
in other systems however where the inititial overall sound is already bright and forward, making use of this cdp would just make the singer shout infront of you :)
really is a matter of synergy and personal choice.
-
sir accastil,
player is to be partnered with a teac avr (entry level) and bw speakers(601), what cdp will you suggest?
tnx
-
goodluck sa cdp hunting sir lakambini!
-
I don't know how Teacs sound, but basing from the DM601 speaks, I'd gravitate towards the NAD (unless you plan to use a sub with these speaks). The NAD may tame the highs a little bit and make the system sound warmer overall.
Aside from ther receiver, take note of your room acoustics. It plays a big part on how your system sounds. Personal preference is another thing to consider.
-
sir accastil,

tnx
very sorry bro but i still havent heard any teac gears yet. as for the 601, i find it somewhere to be in the neutral region, not bright yet not dull. the effect of the teach amp with the 601 together with al the other factors such as your speaker wires, interconnects, room acoustics, and the rest i may have failed to mention should give you that hint of the cdp you want for your system. most of all, your own judgement would tell you what's good and what's not.
the options ive listed are all good for its price(your budget). choosing any of those wouldnt let you down for as long as you have listened to all of them in your own system prior ending on any choice.
i hope it helps.

Do not know of any other for a new production cd player.
Unless you go for vintage and pre-owned units......but I think they are also pricey.

something to try if you really want it tubey....
get any of the cdp u would like to have with your system and try to qualify if you would like the sound of adding an X10D or X10v3 inbetween the cdp and the linestage preamp.
this is more practical and flexible instead of going for a built in tube output.
just my thought...

And try the LG dv246k multi format DVD player for only Php2.5k or less. Great audio reproduction as-is. Then you can also try connecting it with a tube buffer. LGDVD 2.5k + X10D 8k = Php 10.5k.......ok na rin ;D

sirs,
thanks sa inputs, ur al very helpful, what is an x-10d ???
its an output buffer which happens to make use of tubes. there are other output buffers using SS which serves the same purpose....to maximize power transfer from source to pre-amp.
note that not all systems would gain sonic improvement from using them. others would swear that a buffer actually ruined their system synergy :)
to me and most other with experience to it, its a wonder.
-
The tube buffer also serves to resolve the input and output impedances of the 2 connecting components and helps improving the synergy. And mostly, in my experience, you will hear an increase in gain and as well as improved sonics.

I think that's the HD19, you can ask Sights and Sounds in EDSA Shang, 4th Floor. I think the HD22 is SS, or the one model above that. Then the HD32 is the top-loader.

Sir,
Can I use these hardware with my existing cdp?
Do I have to purchase these two units at the same time?
Tnx
-
it can be used inbetween any source and line stage preamp. i am using 1 in between my cdp and linestage, and another 1 inbetween my phono preamp and linestage.
you only need 1 but daisy-chaining them multiplies the effect which could either be judged as better or not, dependig on your system and your persona preference.

Which set-up will produce a better sound?
1. Maintain my existing cdp and add a dac/buffer hardware or
2. Simply buy a new cdp with better dac?
Tnx
-
both options will produce better sound. however, the degree of improvement varies with the equipments that you will be adding and/or changing.
if you could tell us what are the existing gears and the thing you want to achieve which triggerd your idea of upgrading, then we might have more solid recommendations.
its really important that you know what you want to achieve first prior changing anything in your system. changing them just for the sake of upgrading wouldnt lead you anywhere.

Sir Accastil,
My current cdp is a K/H HD710 ('97 model); Teac AG-D9260 avr and B&W 601.
I want my audio to have a wide soundstage, rich midrange and sweet top-end.
Any recommendation sir?
If I may ask sir what is your existing audio set-up? Would appreciate also your journey to audio nirvana,
Tnx

Would the shop happen to be Audible Illusions? I wasn't able to check out their CDPs, as I just checked Ashley's PSBs last time I visited.
OT: The Synchrony One sounds real good.
-
I'd vote for the new CDP. It's not just the DAC that will be an improvement, but most likely the output stage too. Why not try a DAC, a non-OS one like the DAC-AH to give you a completely different flavour?

Ah, there, thanks! Shame on me, I totally forgot the shop name :-[
Did you like the PSBs? I tried them out around a year ago with the NAD C315 (I compared it to my NAD 304) but even with the NAD flagship dual mono the bass of hte PSBs sounded like an uncontrollable mudslide. The 304 sounded a bit more controlled but then again maybe it had less response in that region.

I had PSB monitors last month, but decided to replace them because of the same reason. The lower frequencies don't have that urgency or speed. They do excel in the vocal region, and have sweet highs without hurting extension too much.
The Synchrony is definitely one of their good products. It is a very noticeable improvement over the Imagine line, and has tunable ports which takes care of the muddy bass when tuned right. I've heard speaks from the Alpha, Image, Imagine and Synchrony lines, and I think the Image and Synchrony lines stand out in their respective price points.
The PSBs have a laid back sound, and pairing them with NAD equipment (warm signature) may be the reason for the excessive lows in your experience (especially if you purchased tower speaks). NAD and PSB might be from the same group, but a more forward amp and cdp may just be a better match if you'd like a more athletic bottom end with these speaks.
I also vote for a new CDP. Maybe he can grab a unit with a better transport, dac and output stage. :)
-
@lakambini,
Are you using the digital inputs on the TEAC?
@Stagea,
Didnt get the PSBs, was jsut trying out the C315 vs my 304 at the time, and also wanted to try the 304 on a variety of other speakers just to see how far up I can go for speaker upgrades.

bro, if the 97 hk cpd model sounds the same as the new ones, these are normally laidback. the teac is not familiar to me. the 601 is ok as i find it neutral though not very refined and smooth sounding as the better BS options.
if wider stage, richer mids, and sweeter highs would be your objective of changing anything, i dont think its going to be easy if you want to hit all of it in a single shot :). coming from a HK cdp, the azur and rotel cdp would definitely give u those but not to the extent you could have wanted....but then, you could start from there.
if you would ask me, there is more gain in having the teac upgraded into separates than changing the source at this point in time. this is mostly beneficial especially if you like to listen loud.
my personal preference for sound goes for someting very detailed, a bit forward, a bit bright, all-rounder, extremely clear, extremely quiet background.
the combination of all the things in my current system so far has given me every reqt i need..konting improvement pa for the "extremely quiet background" thing as i still hear small hiss during very loud volume levels. im not even sure if its possible to get rid of it.

the synchronous line is very impressive if paired with the right gears. i agree, it sounds a little laid back and demonstrates very good bass not the same as the lower end lines.

1. contrary to my initial apprehension, hindi malakas sa kuryente tube amp as compared to my other ss amps before- hk930 vintage receiver 110v and now sansui au9500 integrated 100v. yes, i think my el34 pp 25wpc can make your bw601 sing. i had a bw601s2 88db before and now still own a bw602s2 90db.
2. yes depending on your matching gears, ribbon tweeters are best for me.

Sir lakambini,
My 2 cents,
With your current system, my feeling is that the TEAC receiver might be the weaker link than the HK CDP. You might consider trying out pre-owned stereo amps. In the marketplace, the Marantz Esoteric and Rotel RA-02 looks tempting. ;D
-
Sir rommymartinez,
you're right, magkasundo lang kami sa presyo ng rotel ako na kukuha noon. tnx for your input. but in fairness to teac, their audio is more acceptable to my ears than the pio and yam entrylvls, especially in loud volumes.

I agree with romymartinez, whether you use the digital or analog input the TEAC is probably the weak link in your system. Although the sound does start from the source unit the 601s might benefit from a different amp. If you're willing to spend 15k on a CDP, i suggest you try out similarly priced integrated amps. You can try 5wpc SET from AMX, the NAD C315 or the Bada SS integrated amp.
Of those CDPs though, I can't make a recommendation as I have not spent enough time listening to them. Most I've had was 15mins with the 640 and I didnt like sound, must be the MS speakers they had in 5th Ave though. I've always liked NAD CDPs though, I jsut have a lot of gripes about the grainy and sybillant highs on the C515BEE+C315 combo. But since I've always enjoyed the C520, C521 and C525, then most likely the C545 would perform better than those.

Everyone else raised a great point. Replacing the Teac receiver with the Rotel integrated amp in the FS section will probably be a very noticeable gain. :)
Of the 3 CDPs, the 640C V2 might reveal details better and show off the Rotel speed. On the other hand, the C545 will likely give you a wider stage and a less fatiguing listen. I'm not sure if the CD5003 is comparable to the C545 and the 640C, but I also like the expressive vocals that I've heard in most Marantz players. It's really how you like your sound.

another point of consideration ...
when i bought my CDP, i bought it because of it's matching looks with my receiver. (among others)
a good side effect was that the receiver remote automatically can control the CDP :)

sir macdon;
Have you already compared the two? What are your impressions of these cdps? What are their stregths and weaknesses?

very good advice..straight to the point...mejo mataray lang ang dating..hehe
another good option would be to visit as many forumers as you can to listen to their systems. gain familiarity, gain experience, gain friends, enjoy the hobby.

i agree with you sir hiddenakho. (lurker or ?)
pinagdaanan ko rin yan noong wala pa internet. pasyal dito doon magazines brochures etc only to buy something na pag-uwi ko eh iba pala sa expectation ko.
@sir lakambini - trust your ears and wallet. at the end of the day, ikaw ang makikinig sa binili mo. iba ang tunog ng gears sa showroom at sa ibang bahay/setup ng mga members sa tunog nito pag kinabit sa setup mo. its all about mix and match to achieve system synergy.

I was with 3 other pdvd members when we auditioned the 640c in shang - at that same time, we also asked the seller of a Rotel RCD-1072 flagship cdp to come to shang as I was considering to buy it pending the audition.
Once we were all in Shang, we compared the Rotel flagship to the 640c and the sound was similar - however, the cdps were connected to a Cambridge amp, so what we heard from the 640c was matched.
Still, I ended with the Rotel flagship 'coz my amp back home was a Rotel - I was offered a home audition by the seller so I took it.
When I got home & connected the flagship to my Rotel amp, thats when I heard it better than when we were in shang - so matching is one consideration you have to weigh.
Of course, the Rotel flagship is way beyond your 15k price both in bnew or preowned condition, but if you really have to stick with the 15k budget - then i would go with the Marantz 6002. while I know they werent released here in Pinas, we have a lot of pdvd members in Singapore that may be willing to help you out.
Marantz cdps seems to be good with whatever amp brand you connect it to - i know as I've tried it with both my systems (SS & tube) and it performs well.
You can get a Marantz 5003 for 15k over here, but I'd still go for the 6002 if you're patient enough to go thru the hoops ;)

i understand your situation. noong nasa abroad ako, sa liblib na disyerto, ang main cities ay 1.2k km distance, 2-1/2 hours plane ride at 16hours by bus. iisa ang nagtetenda ng arcam/mordauntshort/teac/qed 90s cambridge audio na di pa sikat. all i had was whathifi and hifi news mags na minsan ay pinupunit pa ang pages (na may sexing babae o alak na ads) ng mga authorities kaya di ko nababasa ibang page.
luckily may nalaman akong na mga available audio sa main city - kaya lang mahirap, gastos sa longdistance phone calls (wala pang cellphones) at ayaw mag ship nung iba. buti na lang yung sa riyadh may nad & kef naim chord linn audioquest atbp hi-end products. to those in riyadh alam siguro nyo ang mate-hifi (thomas varkey.indian national) maayos kausap. bank deposit at via dhl oneday lang. i was able to purchase nad amps & cd ; kef coda7. WALANG audition! i trusted the magazines puro awardwinner at 5star ratings. ok naman!
then i established link to our kabayan in jeddah - joe tecson - products nila - wilson audio na iniinstall nila sa prinsipe at ginawang PA system lang daw...rotel roksan b&w etc... binili ko b&w601s2 and b&w602s2 same via bank deposit & dhl....
no internet, no pinoydvd at ako lang sa kompanya ang may "audiophile" gears the others mostly had PMPO compo and bose....
time will come you either have to visit metro manila for some auditioning at the shops or other members home or rely on internet info and pinoydvd posts. then decide for yourself.
goodluck!
* bagay ba handle ko? ;D

there are so many available cd players brandnew, used, or vintage, under 15k. they have their own signature sound. members here have different setup/gears matched with their cdps. some members may have the same cdp brand and model but different amp/preamp/ interconnects/speaker cables and room acoustic treatment so that same cdp may sound differently.
i have a vintage pier surplus cdp with tweaked opamp and an onkyo cdp both very heavy 9-10kg. i bought one from pier and another from original owner. both are near the topoftheline models. combined, they cost less than 15k, but im willing to test them sidebyside with any new production entrylevel totl cdplayers. ;D
bottomline...there is no best cdp under 15k. all have their unique sonic characteristics and might behave differently if partnered with different gears etc.
audition as much as you can. if you cant, then you might be disappointed if you purchase a certain brand/model that have glowing reviews but doesnt match well with your other gears...right mix and match = system synergy ;D trust your ears and wallet ;D
as for me, ive gambled, risked trusted the magazines. ok naman, no guts no glory ;D

@lakambini
sir,
since you live outside metromanila. if you are going to purchase a cdp and have it forwarded to your place, i suggest you consider the brand that has a TRANSPORT KEY LOCK feature. my nad c520 had this feature. it was shipped to me via dhl and arrived with torn carton and broken remote control but the cd player was ok, esp the tray mechanism and lens - di na-mis.align. & remember, hot and humid dito sa metro manila, pag nasa cold and humid ka baka magka-condensation. (btw, the remotecontrol was promptly replaced by the audio shop i bought it from- matehifi riyadh ksa)

Sir,
Thanks for sharing your experiences and suggestions, appreciate it very much.

Which set-up will produce a better sound?
1. Maintain my existing cdp and add a dac/buffer hardware or
2. Simply buy a new cdp with better dac?
Tnx
Btw, I recently got a Musical Fidelity V-DAC for my PC and experimented with connecting it to different CDPs using Digital Coax (340C, 640C v2 and C525BEE). All I can say is that it's hard to improve on the built-in dac and output stage of decent CDPs with a simple device powered by a cheap IC-regulated power supply. Afterall, most CDPs have nice transformers. I ended up not using the V-DAC, because to my ears the CDPs sounded better on their own in most instances. The V-DAC will stick to the PC for now (where it soundly beats the noisy sound board).
My personal conclusion is that the CDP makers can integrate decent circuitry at a much lower price because they can buy and build components in bulk, the DAC's enclosure and power supply become essentially free (it just goes inside the chassis with the rest of the components), and they have to put less money into advertising supposed gains. It'd probably take a more robust external DAC to show marked improvement on these relatively inexpensive CDPs. Don't get me wrong, the V-DAC isn't a bad product. The output is very smooth and refined, but it just doesn't have the expansive stage, rythm and speed that I want.
I haven't tried it, but I suppose it'd make a bigger difference with entry level dvd players.

sir tnx 4 ur input, guess i'll settle 4 a new cdp, re 640c and 525bee, which sound do u prfr?

sir tnx 4 ur input, guess i'll settle 4 a new cdp, re 640c and 525bee, which sound do u prfr?
I'd go for the 640c
-
I like both. Either will satisfy my needs, especially when matched well with accompanying equipment.
The c525bee sounds more dynamic and fun, but the 640c has good rythm, with smooth and extended highs. If you like liveliness and impact in your music, presented in an enveloping stage, you'd probably prefer the NAD. On the other hand, if you'd like a more polite output with focus on imaging and music's fine details, then the 640c may be for you.
-
I have a Nad 525 cdp....I prefer it over Cambridge....personal preference lang....
depende talaga sa mga pinapakinggan mong materials...and matching or synergy with Amp...
previously it is hooked up with Denon and now with an Onkyo 876.....the sound is different in both setup....good thing is, I still like the sound it produces otherwise I might sold either of the two....
Marantz is a good cdp....before I bought my Nad (more than 2 yrs ago) I am auditioning Denon, Cambridge, Marantz (5001), Yamaha, and Sony on the same price point....after a tedious audition, one of the shop that accomodates most of my request brought out the Nad since there is 4 CDP's already lying on the shop and hooked it up.... I ended up buying the Nad even though it doesnt match the looks of my other gears....If it doesnt for the Nad, I may end up buying the Marantz (600x) which is over my budget at that time.....:)
I am more of function over form type of guy so it does not bother me too much if there is a different type of brick in my rack....hehehe

Ano ba magandang cdp...
tagal ko ng nag iisip kung:
surplus cdp
tube cdp
or as mentioned here nad/marantz etc
type of music:
lahat eh...kaya hirap mag decide...depende sa trip ko :-)
fyi...
roadmap ko nga pala....baka bumili rin ng tube amp in the near future,...cguro pamasko sa sarili.
-
Naku sir mukhang mahirap ang dilemma mo. Mahirap pa naman makinig objectively pag nakahookup sa ibang gamit sa gagamitin mo.
Pero for me since you're planning to buy a tube amp din naman, might as well match it with a tube-equipped CDP. :)
-
Sir Stagea,
pag nag tube amp ba ko....kailangan ba tube cdp pa rin?
or pwedeng entry level na good cdp, tas match with tube amp?
or since SS na ko, tube cdp na lang....?
gulo ko he he..

Hindi naman necessarily basta tube amp eh tube output din na cdp. You can always mix and match. Pero imho, not having ss opamps in the output stage of your cdp minimizes the stereotypical ss sound (as there is less exposure to ss components), and maximizes the opportunity to color the sound to your preference. Straight tube will usually sound more "tubish," if there is such a word.
ss with tube cdp or ss cdp with tube amp will also work. there is nothing wrong with hooking them up together. :)

bro,
to make things easier for you, just listen and compare MANY MANY different gears. it doesnt matter if its tube or ss, high-end or lo-end, vintage or latest model, used or bnew. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO CONSIDER IS YOUR OWN LIKING....and there is no other factor you need to consider.

Sir Accastil,
Been hearing/reading this phrase many times "Consider to your own liking" "bahala na ang tenga mo"..etc..to same meaning...
But, "TAO LANG TAYO"...no contentment.
dati akong htib guy....kala ko ok na un, then naaya ng isang kaibigan sa isang audition..teteng...me ibang mundo pala ng sound listening at kalidad ang separates.

eto talagang bisyo na to...parang babae....masarap at di nakakasawa, eh kung mayaman lang ako, di na ko magtatanong...itatambak ko lahat ng gears sa isang kwarto, tas mag spend ako ng 1 month, para i mix and match lahat...sarap cguro.
going back to reality....need straight advise from my gears,...602 s3, denon 1907, nad 304....cd player ang hanap ko...baka meron ng nakapag mix and match sa inyo using my gears. un lang po.
MAraming Salamat!

you cannot reasonably pick any from among many options if you have not heard all of them...so you should listen, THEN compare them with each other and then, finally, to your own liking.
buying anything based on recommendations, reviews, hear-say, etc, would drain your pocket :)

most of the so called "tube cdp" are not really tube cdp.. they are mostly tube buffered cdp..they still have opamps after the dac chip..even cayin have lots of opamps at the output stage of their cd players..
dac chip >> opamp/ss output stage >> tube buffer >> out
At least the buffer isn't solid state (as equipped) heheh. There are some out there (usually more expensive cdps) that supposedly don't have opamps after the dac (they often have 4 or 6 tubes).
I did notice that the cayin cdps I've heard are detailed and dynamic in their output, complementing their tube amps. They partnered very well, pushing out a convincing performance. Compared to a Nad CDP on the same amp, the NAD's strong bottom end just emphasized the weakness of the tube amp.

Is that for all Cayins? When I saw the guts of a CD17 I thought the opamps were there so you get a choice between SS and tube output, if this is true then it's just a choice between tube buffered or not?

4 tubes yung CDT-17A pero dalawa for the output stage ng balanced output, and dalawa for the output stage ng unbalanced output. Mukhang meron siyang Burr-Brown OPA604 Opamps sa signal path.

Yes.. the opamps are for the V/I (current to voltage) stage. thanks

i like the marantz or the rotel... tabi tabi po pero i find the azur to be too bright leading to listening fatigue. but then again its all in the pairing.
-
NAD for me sounds warm and laid back. The Marantz sound isn't laid back in my opinion.
As for Denon CDPs, the old ones were warm sounding... I haven't heard a new one yet.

Why not hte 525BEE? The Marantz I think is at 16k already, don't save the 2k on the NAD. Add 1.5k and get teh 525.

nad has warmer sound but i've read somewhere about reliability issues. better ask nad cdp owners first before buying. marantz are well known for its built-like-tank players so you might consider it too.
-
Sir dukesociety,
same observation here, moreover there were already 3 nad c545bee cdps sold in the buy/sell area, why do they have to sell it? Am really curious because hi-fi choice and what hi-fi has a very positive review of the c545bee. Can anyone shed light on this? thanks.

Between Denon and Marantz, which will give a warmer and more laidback sq?

sound quality wise, nad cdp are bang for the buck. but i've read on forums about reliability issues which of course could be fixed if your unit is still under warranty. now, nasa iyo na yun kung gusto mo mag take ng risk. napansin ko lang kasi sa mga marantz cd player, up to now meron pa din mga binebentang 2nd hand na mga old models as old as 10-15 years. no info on the denon though.

Based on reviews by different magazines, they usually observed that previous marantz models are more laidback-sounding.

i have been reading threads and asking people about my combo, wanted to read and hear more oandagdag sa kaalaman, few questions po
1. What do you mean by forward sounding?
2. Laidback and warm are of the same meaning, yung parang di sya makalansing tama po ba?
3. Whats op am rolling? I raed a thread given to me by a good friend pdvd too but dumugo ilong ko eh yung

4. I have a NAD 325 BEE and NAD 525 BEE combo hooked to a DIAMOND 9.5 speaker, what else can i do to

TIA sa lahat.

1. It's not necessarily "bright" in terms of ear-shattering high freqs, they just tend to happen together very often. "Forward" refers more to the overall presentation of the sound. In some cases a "forward" system is also "bright" in tonality because the tweets not only push the soundstage of some instruments forward, particularly the vocals, but does so via a more efficient and unfettered (by crossover or gain circuit) tweeter. "Bright" also is not necessarily "sybillant;" you can have a dark-sounding system with ear-piercing reproduction of cymbals, "t" and "s" sounds, etc, due to room acoustics and phase issues.
2. Not necessarily, they jsut tend to hapen together. Just reverse the point I made in #1. If you hear my systems (particularly my car's) my preference for "balance" is that the presentation is forward, and tonality is either neutral or on the warm side. This way the vocals are forward, the guitars close behind, drums noticeably to the back and the cymbals lacking the excessive extension some hard-core followers of Paradigm, Focal and Grado like. Thing is, I only hear that sort of cymbal sound when Im in the front 3 rows or so, and you can add the bass drum kicking you in the chest to that. After that there are enough bodies in front of me to dampen the cymbals and bass drum.
3. In brief, op-amps are what makes the sound of an active analog output (aside form the circuit design of course). Think of it as performing the job a DAC does for the digital side, or an IC does for preamps and amps. Change it and depends on the circuit you may do better or worse. Don't mistake this to be as flexible with DAC and IC chips though.
4. A lot of tweaks are available. You can replace cables and capacitors. Of all the components, I say you start with the internal wiring of your 9.5's, plus upgrade the caps to Mundorf M-Caps (most cost-efficient; you can hear the difference spending only 1/3 of the next Mundorf line). After this you can get analog interconnects. You don't need to get "branded" expensive cables, you can make do with a good pro-grade bulk cable like Belden and a good set of plugs like Amphenol or Eichman. Or if you don't have a lot of interference, these plugs can terminate conductors like AU24's or JojoD's silver conductors. In any case whatever you do don't upgrade the speaker cables without tweaking hte internal wiring. Branded speaker cables cost a lot, especially for terminated runs (and that's what I'd pay for), but the stock internal cables can be a chokepoint.

As for unleashing the potential, eh depende kung ano pa ang hinahanap mo (and how you currently have your gear set-up). Fixing your room's acoustics tapos speaker and listening position adjustments make the biggest diff in most cases.

I agree, this is a thread for 15k CDP's. The Apollo looks cheap to people who aren't in the know (ie: a friend once asked me why I wanted a CDP that looks like the original Playstation, but of course, opening that cover would have showed him it's absolutely nowhere near a $150 toy), but damn, is it solid in every aspect. Speaking of build quality, none of the brands mentioned so far were unreasonably clunky for this price range, if at all.

1. What do you mean by forward sounding? like the sound is in your face rather than sounding far. that's why its called "forward"
>> IMHO, this refers to the impression that the instruments and vocals "appear" coming from the front.
It may appear that the drums (which is usually played at back) is in the front.
2. Laidback and warm are of the same meaning, yung parang di sya makalansing tama po ba? laidback is the opposite of "forward". warm is a different thing.
>> IMHO, laidback refers to the impression that the sound is nice to hear but dull, monotonous with average
dynamics (refers to the ability to accurately play very low sound level and max sound level). It appears that
the sound is coming from some distance away.
3. Whats op am rolling? I raed a thread given to me by a good friend pdvd too but dumugo ilong ko eh yung
simpleng explanation lang po di kaya ng powers ko hahahaha. replacing the op amp in your cdp to achieve a different sound.
>> Refers to the replacement of the op-amp used in the output stage of the CDP. The op-amp does 2 things
- (1) Gain (2) Low pass filter and is characterized by its specifications. Since no two op-amps are the same,
the differences in specifications define its "sound character".
4. I have a NAD 325 BEE and NAD 525 BEE combo hooked to a DIAMOND 9.5 speaker, what else can i do to
unleash the full potential of this set up without spending too much? a very complicated question :) :)
>> You may need to modify your source components specifically the coupling caps and/or op-amps.
TIA sa lahat.

And try the LG dv246k multi format DVD player for only Php2.5k or less. Great audio reproduction as-is. Then you can also try connecting it with a tube buffer. LGDVD 2.5k + X10D 8k = Php 10.5k.......ok na rin ;D
Just read this today and fortunately i have LG DV-246K so i tried and connect it to my NAD and I was blown away how it sings :o
thank you brader :-* :D

any updates on these mga sirs for this year?
I am on a hunt mode right now for a bnew CDP. >:D
-
At this price it's hard to get a good dedicated cd player with good sound output.
Maybe explore getting multi players (DVD, BD) with digital output connections and get an external dac.
There is a good Pioneer, Sony or Philips DVD player but cannot remember the price but surely it will be 5k and below.
For the external dac, you can look at Super pro 707, HRT Streamer, Musiland, and Nuforce dacs

I thought major consideration for choosing a cd player is the sampling rate ang sampling resolution. The higher the values, the lesser quantum noise introduced in the conversion therefore the closer it gets to the original analog signal therefore a more accurate output. But I guess having read the experience of our fellow pdvds, it seems that cd players produces different effects to the output signal (warm, bright, forward, etc. )
Question sa mga masters, is this because there's additional processing being done by the players to enhance the output signal? If yes, is there a player that produces RAW or native output?
-
If you are looking for raw output you should get the signal from the digital out of your CDP or DVDP. You should check if your CDP or DVDP has a digital out. This is the scenario if you want to bypass the D/A of your CDP or DVDP and plan to use an external DAC.
Higher sampling rates should theoretically give you better resolution. However, there are some factors to consider such as harmonic distortion. A note is usually a fundamental frequency plus harmonics. The accuracy of the sound of the note is determined how a system can replicate the fundamental frequency and its harmonics. As such in my experience, the range of frequencies where harmonic distortion is least gives you the strengths. The range of frequencies where harmonic distortion is worst gives you the weakness. The strengths and weakness determine the coloration.
-
In addition, the amplitude of the fundamental frequency and harmonics of the note must be accurately reproduced as well.
Hence, if the time intervals are fixed or constant or within a specified tight tolerance and the bit resolution is high we can ensure good reproduction of a note or signal.

Cool - will tell my Uncle, he's looking for a new player to replace his old Pioneer upside-down transport CDP.
-
I am looking for an excellent play-all CD player. Ano kayang brand and model ok and saan available?
-
It's not just high sampling rate that one should look out for. Bear in mind that most DVD players have high sampling rate but sound very anemic when used as a CD player. Most CDs that one will purchase are the garden variety ones that are available in CD stores. The high sampling rate will just be a benefit if you use CD's that are encoded as such as well. The quality of the D/A converter and the pre amp section plays a huge role as well that influence the end result. HDCD is an extra but not a pre requisite.
For 15K il put my money on one of them Pioneer CD players with stable platter and Legato Link conversion. I just do not know if they still make them. It has been used as an OEM platform by several big name audiophile equipment manufacturers. Marantz also makes very good performing CD players.

How about this? ;)
Toshiba HD-A2 player - 2 channel audio playback utilizes Wolfson DAC

That is a very good CD player indeed. I have a DAP using dual Wolfson WM8740 which is exactly the same as your Toshiba CD player. The DAP sounds great.

I don't think Pioneer manufactures CD players with stable platter anymore. You can get one though in the used marketplace.
-
Saw one on them Pioneers with Legato linkmconversion and Stable Platter mechanism in the Marketplace thread of PDVD reymer. At the price that he is selling it's a steal.

Last week ive got a pioneer dvl909 ld/dvd/cd player. I bought some classical laser discs sa surplus shop, kya ako naghanap ng ld player. And found out that the player is 96khrz 20bit dac/legato link convertion. And it is at par or a notch better than my luxman cd107u hybrid player. Got it for 3,500 and it will never get out of my house for good. :) :) :)

See what I mean...sometimes new doesn't mean that it's better. Congratulations.

Congrats Dodie. Kaya pala ang bilis mo mag reserve sa marketplace. :)
-
I got a vintage Sony CDP in the MP also at 1k. It loads fast, still has a nice big LCD screen and sounds pretty decent. Have not compared it with my LG BD for music but I think it wont be less par with it. Its analogue by the way.

Hello, i have the same question so i thought i just post it here,
i have a yamaha receiver rx-v575 w/ polk floorstanders
i wanted to have a cdplayer that can play high resolution audio (for music only)
i just wanted to ask what cdp would sound nice if paired with the gears i have right now?
i was planning to get
NAD
ROTEL
MARANTZ
just cant really decide which one yet, hoping for your suggestions, its actually what i can afford
so i just wanted to make the best out of what i have right now.
thanks in advance...

What sort of high resolution material are you thinking of?
-
ano ba review nyo sa marantz cd6004? balak ko din bumili...
-
hello sir,
what i know is that regular cd only is 16/44.1kHz so a cdp that can actually play anything above that will do...
correct me if im wrong po
-
So ang pagkakaintindi ko if u use for example the NAD cdp it will upscale the signal for it to sound better? Because it already has a great dac? No need for a external one? Tama po ba?
Thank you
Yes newbie sorry ;D
-
^ yes CD's are 16/44.1..
high resolution CDP? maybe you want an SACD player too?
CDP transport,DAC and analog stage are all important..don't focus sa DAC alone sir unless you are planning to use your CDP as an external DAC (if it accepts digital input)..
do you have a lot of CD collection? I think Redbook or something yung maganda quality..

Upscaling may or may not sound better. I've had friends who preferred the native resolution of the music. Sometimes, nasa mood din ng listener. For me, upscaling in my system (before) made the sound smoother.
You have to try the NAD and other CDPs muna for you to tell which sounds better for you. And before you do that, try visiting other people's system or sa mga stores dito sa Pdvd. They are very accomodating. That way, you can define your preference sa sound quality. Kapag may initial preference (initial because our preferences sometimes change or develop through time) ka na, you can begin your hunt.

wow ok thanks for the input mga sir..
was planning to get the nad 516bee
and yes never ending journey to get the sound u want
dati ht lang ngaun after ht my pang dedicated setup for music naman hehe
