Highdefdigest Review on PQ: LINK (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/594/spiderman_trilogy.html)

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture

Though Sam Raimi chose to work with a couple of different directors of photography on the trilogy (Bill Pope on episodes one and three, and Don Burgess on two), like the films themselves, the great thing about the visual look of the 'Spider-Man' films is its consistency. Raimi has fine-tuned a very graphical, bold style that serves as one of the connective tissues of the franchise, an observation that's only heightened watching all three of the films back-to-back on Blu-ray. Throw any of these discs in at random, and you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference.

Sony has mastered all three films in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, with each getting their own BD-50 dual-layer disc (note that 'Spider-Man 3' does have some extras, though they are largely audio material and thus don't eat up too much space). 'Spider-Man' is of course the oldest of the three, and at times shows it. In particular, I didn't find colors to be quite as bold in the first film as they are in the later installments, and saturation can be quite intense, to the point where colors occasionally smear ever-so-slightly. The second and third flicks are much more solid, although as I wrote in my full-length review of the stand-alone 'Spider-Man 3' release (note that the disc contents are identical to the box set, including the transfer), all three films have a "hot" look, with whites blowing out, which dulls colors somewhat. This is most evident again on the first film, which looks a bit blander than the other two.

In general, all three transfers deliver a level of depth and detail that is usually stellar. There are definitely sequences throughout the trilogy that can easily serve as demo material. Given my personal distaste for high-contrast transfers, I was most impressed by darker scenes in each film, which tend to feature more pleasing colors for a smoother, natural image. Shadow delineation is also excellent across all three films, with an impressive level of detail visible in even the dimmest interiors. Perhaps the most interesting visual distinction between the films is the gradual improvement in CGI effects. By far, the most distracting element of the first 'Spider-Man' for me is its over-reliance on "motion blur," which sometimes gives character movements (particularly in the action scenes) a very soft, unfocused quality.

Having said all that, I don't want to give the impression that the first film (or the second) are necessarily bad presentations. Quite the contrary. The differences in color, contrast and sharpness are fairly subtle, and taken as a whole, this is an excellent set of transfers. I definitely feel that Raimi and company perfected the already impressive visual palette they introduced in the first film by the time they finished off the trilogy, so most of my nitpicks come down to the original source for each film. All in all, I think fans will be more than pleased with this set.

(Note that 'Spider-Man 2' is presented in two versions -- the original theatrical cut, and an extended edition dubbed 'Spider-Man 2.1.' The option to select your preferred version appears on the disc's start-up menu, and the quality of each is absolutely consistent. I also noticed no lag in access times with the branching footage in the '2.1' version, so the end result is seamless.)

Am still tweaking the cam settings so am sure this isn't the optimal one yet.  Far still vs. the pristine and clean screencaps of sir Pchin and Munskie.  Will endeavor to get the right aperture settings to do the videos justice, and help maintain the quality of the posted graphics here  ;)

Hmmm... posting has slowed down a bit.  It's actually hard din pala to set-up a nice vidcaps - that may be the reason.  ;)
Watched EWS a coupla days back.  The movie's color feel is really dark and over-saturated so it was hard to select clear scenes.  Most of the pics here would thus show more grain than expected.

Per one of the reviews in High Def Digest, they're saying that "this one's probably the weakest of the Kubrick films hitting high-def...held back by a bit noisy, oversaturated, washed-out transfer..."  Nevertheless here ya go  ;D

I believe the most important thing you'll need is a steady tripod - with remote trigger sana pero kung wala, i-timer mo na lang to lessen the camera shake when you press the shutter button.  Yes, the slightest nudge of your index finger could ruin that HD moment.  ;)

If you're using a DSLR, you may opt to play around with the aperture, ISO and exposure settings, depending on the ambient light inside your viewing room.  If you're just using a good 'ol point & shoot cam, then best you just put it to auto (or Program mode if it has) but switch off the flash (you wouldn't want that reflection on the screen of course).

Depending on the speed of your cam, you can either just snap away when your fave scene registers OR you can ff and pause it as well to get the best detail - tact sharp photo.  Take a number of test shots to make sure you have equal lighting on your panel and that your cam is dead center.  If you're not centered (horizontally or vertically), this would of course lead to distortion and uneven shading of the picture that will register.

Last but not the least, I just wanna say that it's a trial and error thing.  Your set-up / cam settings would be uniquely yours given the environment you're shooting in, the panel you're using, and time of the day you're doing it.  Once you get the hang of it, talagang super enjoy to capture those crystal HD moments.  (Hirap nga lang mag-set-up ng tripod bro  :D )

Just my 10 cents.  Enjoy!  ;)

PS: Don't do screencaps if it's the first time you're viewing a title / movie.  It will surely ruin your viewing experience cause it's so interruptive (aside from the fact that you have your cam and tripod mount right in front of you - depriving you of your usual 'sweet spot.'  Enjoy the movie first, take note of the highlight HD scenes you'd like to capture and balikan mo nalang after you finish the movie.  8)

Sir Munskie, you are so on the money! The registration of photos on the Flickr site is just so much clearer compared to Photobucket.

Did a comparo below on a screencap of Wild Things.  I uploaded the same file to the two websites and clearly, you can see more definition in the Flickr vs. the soft Photobucket pics. What's more amazing is that the resulting file size in Flickr is even LOWER, compared to Photobucket! Amazing!!! Great find Munskie and many thanks for sharing with the group!  ;)

hi bro, first off happy new year!  :)  And yes your observation seems to be true, given that I uploaded the same file size to both websites, we can rule out the "mb" factor.  Seems that the flickr server does takes a bit longer time to respond.  If you wait a couple of seconds more, the images will still come out though.  It's just like being on dial-up and landing on a slow-loading web page cause of its extremely rich content.

As such, we dp have to consider the speed of your i-net connection and the fact that in that in the previous page of this thread, there were quite a number of hi-res flickr-based images posted by various members so presumably, it does take a little more time to link back and show all of the images.  ;)  Well that's the 'price' for better looking images I suppose  ;D
