just curious.
with all the advancement in smart TV's -- it's capability to play media from external storage devices + it's capability to stream online -- is it still viable to buy an NMT?
if yes, why?
-
i haven't seen a TV that's capable of playing various codecs/formats and ability to update as it ages. also not all areas have hi speed internet for streaming.
-
Yes, most smart TVs, if not all, have lesser specs and capabilities than that of an nmt. In short, nmts are smarter than a smart tv

Agree.
Current smart TVs, even the most expensive ones, have limited codec support. I have some video files in .TS HD format and my trusty AC Ryan flawlessly reads 'em all.

I have a 4K Smart TV which has Netflix and youtube and cast from my phone or laptop which is most of what I do with the TV box can do anyway.
However, that's still not enough to avoid the tv box (I use a Mi Box and a Chinese Android box). The Smart TV's apps are limited and I can't really muck about with the TV in fear of breaking it. I have no fear though hacking a Tv box and even bricking it. Plus I would not want a TV on 24x7 doing more advanced stuff like Plex or serving media. It's too much electricity wasted.

and if ever you're planning to get one, and plans to use kodi, get the brands that sponsor it.
-
I thought the topic is about the sneakers. Please edit your title.

ako mas prefer ko NMT kasi mas gusto ko sa speakers and amp ko padaanin ang audio. :)

hindi yata kaya mag decode ng dts ng usb slot ng tv + hindi lahat ng file kaya niya iplay
-
^ sir @anya68, pwede naman ma-decode yung DTS sa USB slot ng TV, but only with certain models. I have Samsung and Sharp panels that can.
-
Another reason is mobility and portability. You can easily move or transfer your NMT from one TV (or setup) to another, if there is a need

as you've mentioned all the advancements available in SMART TV's, i believe you have covered DTS-decoding. because yes, this has been mentioned above that not all TV's (means NOT or SEMI-advanced? hehe) can decode DTS. make sure that the license is DTS Surround and not just DTS 2.0 or DTS Digital Out.
I will only say yes, you need an NMT if you go the route of ATMOS/DTS:X. because only the upcoming LG OLED 2017 models promised they can decode ATMOS (but still not DTS:X).
if you'll not go ATMOS/DTS:X, I strongly suggest you get a Sony Android Smart TV, it can also become an IPTV and an Android game console.
and if ever you'll get yourself an NMT, I strongly suggest NVidia Shield. it can be a portable IPTV, a media player, streaming device and a game console all-in-one =)) a match made in heaven to any TVs (SMART or non-SMART, alike) + the ATMOS/DTS:X pass-through =))

Yes need mo pa rin ng Nmt..
Like this one if you watch concert in full bluray menu.

Smart tv like Lg can decode dts hd master(lossless) but will be downgraded to dts(lossy) when sent to Avr via arc or optical out. At mas maganda ng di hamak ang picture quality ng Magandang media player compare sa default tv player..

just incase... check this out. just published end-Feb2017. though not sure if C/NET is a "paid" product reviewer..

also check Mi Box 3 (make sure to get the Int'l Edition), mura pa... =))
otherwise, your TV's USB movie function should be enough...

KODI
I prefer my GUI to be eye candy like Nvidia Shield Pro.

Dapat ata baguhin na title netong thread, laos na ang "NMT"! ;D
Baka dapat why buy a separate Media Player.
For me I prefer separate media player, is usually for upgradeability. At yung product support para mafix yung mga issues sa software ng player. At usually mas dependable talaga yung mga separate media player whether it be software or hardware.
