HBO’s Watchmen Series With Damon Lindelof Begins Production
It appears that the promised Watchmen TV series is beginning production. HBO is reportedly working on a TV version of the classic Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons comic book with Damon Lindelof.
Today Lindelof posted a pic on his Instagram account from the writers’ room showing a certain vigilante’s legs on a statue with the words, “In gratitude.” Fans of the comic will recognize this statue and what nefarious use it’s put to in the graphic novel.
Originally published as a 12-issue miniseries beginning in 1986, Watchmen quickly become one of sequential art’s most acclaimed stories. Zack Snyder’s feature adaptation of Watchmen, meanwhile, was released in 2009 and brought in just $185 million at the worldwide box office. The cast includes Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Carla Gugino, and Patrick Wilson.
Since the film’s release, DC Comics released an extensive “Before Watchmen” comic line, telling stories from the pasts of the central characters. More recently, DC Comics has made efforts to integrate Watchmen into the broader DC Multiverse.

The exact details of their characters are being kept under wraps. ‘Watchmen’: Jeremy Irons To Star In Damon Lindelof’s HBO Pilot
Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen is adding more star power to its cast. Oscar winner Jeremy Irons has been tapped for a lead role in the HBO pilot, a take on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ iconic limited comic series. He joins previously cast Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens and Andrew Howard.
Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own. As Lindelof recently noted, the project is not an adaptation of the 12 issues of the comic but an original story that remixes them.

Damon Lindelof's 'Watchmen' Series a Go at HBO
Watchmen is indeed heading to HBO. Damon Lindelof's new spin on the classic graphic novel, all-but-guaranteed a slot on the network's roster after a pilot order in 2017, has gotten a series order with a 2019 premiere in mind.
The drama comes to HBO by way of Lindelof's White Rabbit in association with Warner Bros. Television and is, of course, based on the characters from the DC Comics property. But the series will not be a straight adaption of Alan Moore's graphic novel, previously translated for film by Zack Snyder. Instead, Lindelof has dubbed his version a “remix” of the original material, though many of the characters remain intact.
Lindelof's lengthy cast includes Regina King, who starred in the second season of previous HBO drama Leftovers, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr. and a host of others.
The network released a logline for Watchmen with the following description: "Set in an alternate history where “superheroes" are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own."

Damon Lindelof Designed Watchmen as a Self-Contained One Season Series
In discussing the upcoming series with Deadline, Damon Lindelof revealed that unlike his work on ABC’s long-running mystery series Lost, he and his writer’s room crafted the nine-episode season as a self-contained story that would have a total resolution.
“Does that mean that there isn’t going to be anymore Watchmen? Not necessarily,” Lindelof said. “Does that mean that I will be working on subsequent seasons of Watchmen? I don’t know is the answer to that question. We designed these nine episodes to be as self-contained as the original 12 issues. We wanted to feel like there was a sense of completeness, to resolve the essential mystery at hand.”
Though he acknowledges the fact there is plenty of potential to keep the series going following the first season, and that it could very well happen should the audience show enough hunger for more, Lindelof describes the first nine episodes as a great enough challenge on their own that he and his crew wanted to ensure they nailed this season before they even started toying with the idea of future ones.

Watchmen May Not Return For Season 2, Says Damon Lindelof
HBO’s adaptation of Watchmen has been a major hit for the premium cabler, with strong word-of-mouth helping with its ratings and seeing rave reviews from critics. While many are hoping to see a second season of the series, showrunner/developer Damon Lindelof says he would “need to have a really cool idea and justification for doing it,” and that he “can’t say that there will definitely not be a second season and I can’t say there definitely will be.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lindelof revealed that when he pitched the series to HBO, he used True Detective and Fargo as examples of what the show can be and how the original creator doesn’t need to be involved with future iterations and that while he can’t say a second season won’t happen, he doesn’t currently have any ideas or justification for doing a second season.
“I feel for someone who’s wildly inconsistent in general, I’ve been fairly consistent on this point,” Lindelof says. “When we first went public with the pilot at New York Comic-Con, I wanted to make sure that everybody who was going along for the ride knew what the design of the season was. Especially after what happened with Lost, and the way that a lot of serialized dramas unfolded, where the audience doesn’t know how thick the book is when they pick it up. This is a love letter and an examination of the original Watchmen… I wanted everyone to know this is not the middle of the trilogy, this is not the beginning of a seven-season run. In my opinion, the best iteration of any season of Watchmen would mirror the original [graphic novel] in that it would be a self-contained story with the resolution of a fundamental mystery. There’s always going to be space for more Watchmen. I feel like this world is so expansive — hopefully more expansive now than it was before. You could call something Watchmen and not even feature any of the characters who were in the original or in this season as long as they all occupy the same world.”
The showrunner also added that the writers have “gone on to other things” but says he has it in the back of his mind that if one day the opportunity came to develop another season, he could call them up if they were available and say, “Hey, we’re putting the gang back together for another heist.”

This was a very entertaining and compelling series. An ambitious project, but Damon Lindelof and his team pulled it off. Being familiar with the graphic novel certainly enhances the viewing experience. I'm sure many fans of the series will rewatch all the episodes, knowing what they know now. :) And no need for a second season IMO.
