Title: Alien Quadrilogy
Post by: firewired on Feb 12, 2004 at 03:00 AM
We've been informed that the R1 box of Alien Quadrilogy may be available locally in the next couple of weeks. No pricing details have been released yet, but we'll keep you posted as we receive new information.

Have seen it already.  PARC has a couple already.

Almost 50 hours all in all

Is it worth the price of entry? I'm guessing that Viva will probably sell the box between 3.5K and 4.5K. With the coming Grand AstroPlus Podium sale, the individual R3 films are going down to P575 each (although these are definitely inferior in terms of video quality and special features).

Fox is shipping this out from abroad before the end of the month, so the stocks should be in the Philippines sometime in April.

By the way, The Alien Quadrilogy R1 set  will be an exclusive Astrovision/AstroPlus release in partnership with Viva Video.
Title: Alien Quadrilogy R1: April 13
Post by: firewired on Apr 06, 2004 at 08:11 AM
I received word from Viva last night that the Alien Quadrilogy Region 1 box will be exclusively available at all Astrovision and AstroPLUS branches starting April 13. Retail price is confirmed at Php2.8-K.

Please note that since this is a direct import release, stocks are very limited. If you intend to buy this set, buy it soon.

WOW, at last may definite date na rin at isang linggong tulugan nalang, hehehe, i'd been anticipating this since you broke the news last march 7 mainly because of its very reasonable price

thanks a lot for the info boss firewired, dapat walang gastos ngayong holy week para may pambili nito, hehehe

To quote from the front page:

UPDATE: Viva Home Video clarified that the Alien Quadrilogy box is a Region 3 version release and not the Region 1 version as earlier expected. Delivery is still confirmed for April 13. Viva assured PinoyDVD that the set is still a full FOX import and is packaged identically to its Region 1 counterpart. All discs and special features are intact except possibly for the substitution of Asian subtitles.

Oh well. The head of Viva's Fox marketing group assured me that except for the Region 3 disc setting, the box set is comparable to the Region 1 release. To Viva's  credit, recent Fox releases have been top notch so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

What gave you that idea, when it's all over this web site, both on the main index page and in firewired's replies in this thread that it's a 9-disc set?
Title: Re: Alien Quadrilogy
Post by: firewired on Apr 13, 2004 at 09:57 AM
I'm verifying now. As far as I know, it's the 9-disc set. JT is based in Singapore however so he's probably referring to the R3 release there -- so yes, I'm a bit worried at this point. If Viva is importing an R3 release, hopefully it's not that one.

If that's the R3 packaging (which seems to be using album-style platters for the discs), it actually looks sturdier than the R1 version which uses the usual foldout style digi-pack. Btw P2,800 is confirmed. Mr. Hankey already posted this release in the shopping thread (http://www.pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=21126.new;boardseen#new).

Yes, that's exactly the type of packaging, down to the clear yellow plastic "pages" of the album. The slip case of the 9-disc set is embossed with "metallic"-type print, and it comes with a high-quality 24 page colored booklet with program descriptions, chapter stops, cast lists/credits, and features present per disc.

Picture quality (I'm only looking at Disc One) is pristine. Anamorphic widescreen.

Language options are English 5.1 DD (For all 4 films) and English 5.1 DTS (For Alien and Alien Resurrection). Subtitles include English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese (written in Chinese calligraphy, so I don't know which dialects), Malaysian, Indonesian and Tagalog! There are pages 2 and 3 for the subtitle options in case you don't find Tagalog right away.

Sample of the Tagalog subtitles:

Quote
"Where is Earth?" - Saan ang mundo?

"You should now." - Dapat alam mo.

"It's not our system" - Hindi ito ang ating system.

"Scan." - Siyasatin.

Siyasatin!  ;D

Best R3 buy EVER! Astro Virra Mall got 6 copies, I reserved/picked up the last one, sorry.

Not sure if Astro Greenhills (Parking Mall?) has any copies left. I don't think too many people go to that branch.

Pumunta ako sa Podium kanina at wala silang kopya kaya takbo agad ako sa Megamall. 10 copies lang meron sila at hindi pa naka-display kaya kailangang magtanong pa.

got a copy na.

tanong lang, baket mas maiksi yung directors cut ng Alien (1) compared with the theatrical?? hmmm

mukang may mali din sa running time printed on the booklet.

can anyone else confirm?  ???
Title: Re: Alien Quadrilogy
Post by: Mr. Hankey on Apr 15, 2004 at 12:39 AM
Yes, there is a misprint in the booklet, which says the director's cut is 110 minutes.

It's actually 115 minutes and 37 seconds.

But the director's cut is really shorter than the theatrical version, which runs 116 minutes and 25 seconds.

Here's why:

"For the Director's Cut, Scott has trimmed a few brief scenes (notably Dallas' second visit to Mother) and tightened a few others to improve the pace. He's also added a few brief extended moments, as well as a handful of new scenes. These include the crew listening to the alien transmission on the bridge of the Nostromo, Kane setting his weapon down before he looks at the alien egg on the derelict, Lambert slapping Ripley outside the infirmary, a few quick new shots when Brett goes looking for Jonesy, the infamous 'cocoon' scene near the end, and a brief shot of the alien smacking Jonesy's cage. Additional fixes made by Scott include a couple of starfield shots and revised color timing throughout the film. In terms of length, because of the trims, the Director's Cut is actually about a minute shorter than the original version."

Sir Scott prefers the theatrical cut rather than his "own cut" because it only matters in few minutes.

Anyway the price tag is really a steal! I was tempted to buy the box set yesterday but I'm still looking for the feedback here in pinoydvd.

Noticed something that was in the R1 that is lacking in the R3.  The Alien3 and Alien Resurrection features (theatrical/assembly/extended cuts) don't seem to be THX certified.   Also, THX Optimizers are not included for these films.

I guess I don't mind these omissions, given the price.  Your mileage may vary.

The box-set has a sturdy packaging... can beat the box-set of LOTR Platinum editions, with cool booklet that you can treasure for a long time.

It's so easy to lift the discs on the hub which is the exact opposite of 2 disc-set of Warner releases like the Harry Potter, True Romance.

The video transfer also are excellent, so far I finished watching ALIEN & ALIENS.

Will watch tomorrow the extras of both movies. Maybe abutin ako one month before I finished watching all the 9 discs.  :)

I just watched alien 1 which had DTS on my entetainment system (promac 5.1 t). But I didn't notice anything special about it.  A lot of you guys have been raving about the DTS soundtrack. But I really didn't notice any differences between a dvd that has a DTS soundtrack and a dvd that doesn't. I'm kind of a newbie in dvd collecting so can someone please explain the difference.

there is not much difference when your using htib or entertainment systems.try using avr's or separates.you will hear a big difference.dts sountrack are more dynamic and its louder than dd.

yup-yup...it seems that they do replenish fast, I got a copy last Friday, and it was supposedly their last, well seemingly for the week. ;)

I also saw 2 copies at the Astrovision Greenhills. ;D

I guess there are enough copies for the limited few who can truly appreciate this particular release. ;D ;D ;D

I've seen around 8 to 10 or more copies in AstroPlus Podium yesterday afternoon. I'm wanted to buy but still thinking coz of monetary limitation. :'(

Yup, Astro's been moving stock around from what I understand. They have their own warehouse in San Juan. According to Viva though, they've delivered all of their stock to Astro so the stores are just finishing off whatever copies they still have or are sending them to other branches that have higher demand. At last count, less than 40 copies left daw.

I guess it wasn't that limited after all. And to think nagkandarapa ako nun when it came out for the fear na baka maubusan ako. But it doesn't make any difference. I'm gonna buy it sooner or later anyway.

Picked up mine at Astro in Glorietta yesterday... 2 copies left over there.

Questions: the set has a pocket where a booklet should normally be, but mine doesn't have one. Is there supposed to be one? Should I return it?

Welcome aboard...aquajoe.

Yup...definitely it should contain a booklet that has synopsis, cast, chapter listings of the dvds & other tidbits. Ask the sales personnel from Astro in Glorietta.

I'm down to three more discs. I watch the movies in 1 week intervals. I watch the films on my day off and I watch the special features disc of the film within that week. That way it really builds the anticipaton of watching the next part of the quadrilogy. I especially like how they produced the second film. There was an animosity between the american and the british crew. Medyo masungit pala si James Cameron. :)

I finished first watching the four movies then the special features tomorrow. Of all the four Alien flicks...I like best ALIEN by Ridley Scott followed closely by David Fincher's...ALIEN 3.

The least among the four movies that I like is Cameron's ALIENS.

David FIncher has an eye just like Sir Ridley Scott but I was sad to know thru Empire Magazine that he killed NEWT on ALIEN 3.

Camerons ALIENS is more of  a battle movie.  Where armed warfare is really present, unlike Alien and Alien 3, where they only used what was there at there ship and/or colony.

Yes, he did killed Newt.

I have seen both the R1 and R3 releases.

R3 is more of a Book type box, while R1 is where you can really spread the disc (Panoramic).

No weapons were used in ALIEN & ALIEN 3 bro... on that part alone you can actually see who's genius among them and even Sigourney objected for NEWT's death on Alien 3.

Critics were divided regarding ALIEN 3 but man...Fincher will follow-up Alien 3 with Fight Club & Se7en...both excellent flicks also.  :)

In ALIEN, they used a somewhat an electric ROD and Siquorney used a grappling hook to push the Alien. In ALIEN 3, they used just there skills, somewhat like Macgyver.

I haven't finished watching all the extras, special features on the dvds. Will start with ALIEN tonight.

The best among the four Alien flicks, I would like to see Sir Ridley Scott work behind the scenes and how he interact with the cast headed by Sigourney Weaver.

Finally finished all 9 discs. I have watched this set everyday for 5 weeks and it was really a great collection. I wish they would pattern boxed sets from this one. I like how the way each movie has a special features disc. Not like the indy trilogy where all special features were on one disc. Of the four movies I liked the first one the best because right after the facehugger scene, I was always uneasy from my seat from that point on. Really scary stuff. And to think this was  movie that was done outside the digital age. Most scary movies today are kinda like jokes to me.

Title: Re: Alien Quadrilogy

I would have liked to hear his comments about the british crew. Nakakatuwa talaga yung special features disc nung Aliens. Very interesting yung production nung movie na yun.

AVP = Alien Vs. Predator, and I think that statement was made half-jokingly.  ;)

Though I wouldn't put it past them.

I'm also a bit surprised na ubos na yung Alien Quadrilogy sa Podium. I was there about the same time as firewired, I guess, and was actually shocked at the number they had in stock. I even thought to myself, "Yeah, limited stocks DAW, inaamag naman sa shelves sa dami."

What a difference a few days makes. I wonder if they weren't pulled out and brought to other branches?

i'm guessing you watched the restored cut of alien 3. the audio distortions are there because they put back restored footage not found on the theatrical release and the audio was either damaged or taken from when they were shooting the actual scene, not from a studio.
