Do we need to focus on the manufactured DVD's itself?
How about climate factors? Case? Cabinets? Package?
Makes me wonder if DVDs are worth collecting if they will rot after some time. Siguro it's wiser to dispose of then after playing enjoying them once.. Afterall, once the HD-DVD comes along, here goes another buying spree upgrade for the titles i like. All these DVDs will be obsolete and not compelling to watch anymore. So totoo lang, i think 99% of my DVDs just stay on the shelf after watching once.sell your dvds na lang. i'm sure the members here wouldn't mind lightening your load. ;D
20+ years only? :o :o :o
i thought it was 50+ years. can anyone confirm this? ???
will dehumidifiers help prevent this from happening to our precious collections?
thanks...
This is so scary naman. You mean to say after taking good care of our dvds and spending so much for them ... they will rot lang din after a while.

Makes one think if this collecting of dvds is all worth it. We are so passionate about this pa naman tapos dvd rot lang din pala ang bagsak :'(

from experience, got two dvd rots in my dvds in keepcases piled closely from each other... luckily, i have never experienced DVD rots on my LE's.. not sure if the extra space where the LE box/package is kept acts as a ppositive factor which prohibits dvd decay against heat? moisture? no idea really...
i have to read more to find out.. as of now.. i am happy that my LE's has no dvd rot or damage whatsoever. ;) ;)
What about silicant or silicone desicants? They keep away moisture you know. I' ve put several of them inside my dvd cabinet.
Let me know if anyone is interested & I could bring back a few extra from Malaysia. :)
Hi Paul,
Are you pertaining to the "Thirsty Ele" or the "Desiccant Silica Gel"? At any rate, I'm still interested to order... How much does the silica gel cost? Tnx!!! ;)
Thats another reason not to collect dvds.IMAGINE PAYING THAT MUCH AMOUNT AND THEN NOT HAVING THEM LAST . WHAT THE HELLLLL'S THE USE OF ALL OF THIS? MY SUPERMAN SPECIAL DVD COULD NO LONGER BE PLAYED ON ALL OF MY FOUR PLAYERS! SO ITS NOT ENOUGH TO SCCRRREW US WITH THEIR HIGH SKY PRICES THEY HAVE TO SHIFT IT UP OUR BACKSIDES AND TWIST IT AROUND SOME MORE WITH THIS DEFECT!
CHANCES ARE ITS NOT A DEFECT AT ALL BUT A BUILT IN SECURITY DEVICE...ROTTING IT WOULD MAKE YOU BUY ANOTHER COPY...GREAT MARKETING PLAN! MAYBE SOMEONE SHOULD SEND THAT ARTICLE TO EDU MANZANO!

Yes I believe Dehumidifiers in certain extend may help in preventing this negative effect on our precious treasures. It will never hurt to try esp if your collections (like mine) are stored in closed cabinets, wardrobe, drawers, bookshelf, leather bag, storeroom, etc. It's suitable for clothes, leather, camera, computer, audio & video equipment, etc.
You may want to try a new product named "Thirsty Ele" which cost about P300 per bag, can be reusable for 100 times! Each last for 1-3 months, natural & non-toxic, absorbs moisure 2 times faster & deodorizes by neutralizing smell rather than covering it.
It's the best way to lower humidity naturally by removing dampnes, sweat vapor, humid gems, mildew and odour. Keeping dry will reduce airborne bacterial.
For double protection measure esp in those expensive limited edition boxes with tight spaces, you may also want to try using Desiccant Silica Gel as per blitzkrieg's suggestion. For me, I'm using both... ;D Let me know if anyone is interested & I could bring back a few extra from Malaysia. :)
Just checked my asian dvd collection, I was very surprised that my Infernal Affairs Disc 1 experienced signs of oxidation. However, my replacement Superman R3 is still Ok.
Perhaps 1 fine day I shud try to conduct an "all out" inspection on all my collections.
hi, actually yung 2-disc director's cut My Sassy Girl copy ko, after keeping it not viewed for siguro not more than a month, nagkaron ng parang mga marks of moist :o (not sure if it's caused by moist or whatever, wala namang aircon yung piagtataguan ko non). (hard to discribe it) parang mukang maps yung shape (hehe). pero when i played it, doesn't affect playback naman. still "Sassy" pa rin (ah ok ::)) hehe. walang scratches yung discs yun nga lang parang naging blurry yung disc. can anyone tell me ano yung cause noon? ???thanks. ;D

I've lost due to rot:
Jerry Macguire Region 1
LOTR: Return of the King Extended/Platinum Edition disc 1 (movie) Region 1
Dr. Zhivago Region 3
Robotech Macross disc 5 out of 6
Can you still make a backup DVD copy?
Nope...at this stage it is already unreadable by a player or a PC dvd drive.
Seems the solution here is to get rid of youd DVD titles as soon as you've finished watching them. Not much point really collection and letting them rot on shelves.
where can one get silica gel packs again?
where can one get silica gel packs again?
This is what it looks like bro. P62.75x25packs at TruValue. Reusable pa siya.
So where is this stuff usually available? TIA
after checking my collection last dec, i think i have this also on my MSG dvd, but on disc-2 special features only. still playable though
really a sad news for us dvd collectors... especially for me since i just started the collection last August.
mas malaki ba advantage na hindi mag rot ang dvd kung sealed pa?
may naka encounter na ba dito na sealed yung dvd nya for a very long time then when he opened it, may rot na? possible kaya ang dvd rot sa isang sealed dvd?
TIA.
Mabuhay!
Nakakatuwa naman ito! Pagkatapos kong kumayod para makabili lang ng CDs/DVDs kakanta rin pala ng song ni Ms. Streisand "some good things never last".
OT
pasensya na slower learner ako, yung silica gel ba ilalagay sa loob ng box ng CD/DVD or maglalagay ka mismo sa cabinet kung saan nakatago mga collection mo? please advise
TIA for any response.
Godbless
You can also notice this in jewelry shops etc wherein they put a jigger of water in one or two corners.
Oh I see, yun pala purpose nun. Akala ko pampaswerte. Hahaha ;D
a jigger of water will do just to suck out the moisture. You can also notice this in jewelry shops etc wherein they put a jigger of water in one or two corners.
Not only sucking moisture but dust as well. For some reason, the dust gets into the water. I put those behind my bookshelf. :)
I bought this Dehumidfier from Ace Hardware at around php70 in hopes that it will prevent my DVD collection from rotting.

Note all the liquid it has absorbed in 3 weeks ;)

Whats the fastest way to check if the discs have been hit by rot (short of having it loaded on the player to see if it will play in its entirety)?
mukhang used na for some time, ah. it's turning pink na.paarawan lng para mag clear ulit

I just read this topic. Grabe andami ko pa namang hindi napapanood sa mga DVDs ko. When I use silica gel ba e guaranteed na hindi magro-rot yung dvd ko?
Just bought some Silica Gel pack @ Ace Hardware around 71php..approximately 40 pillows.
I put single pillow of Silica Gel in every DVD's
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h70/michael_aransazo/Picture004.jpg)
;D
Kailangan pa bang butasan yung silica gel pillows (pin holes)? Permeable ba yung plastic packaging ng pillows?
its up to you po kung gusto mo pa butasan..pero may maliliit na butas na plastic nung pillows. :)
How long will the silica gel last? Also yung dehumidifier...Tip naman guys when I should change ung silica gel sa loob ng DVD case, at yung laman nung dehumidifier...TIA
ang alam ko (im not sure)... kapag nagiba na ang kulay ng silica gel (di na siya transparent)... kailangan nang palitan (or ibilad na lang sa araw para di na palitan).
Just bought some Silica Gel pack @ Ace Hardware around 71php..approximately 40 pillows.I bought a lot of these ;D. I just have a question now. Does this product have Cobalt Chloride? I don't wanna freak out or have an anxiety attack ;D. Thats bec. I have so much dvds and blurays (around 1300 or more surrounding my bedroom and living room ;D), eh kung Carcinogenic pala. I don't want this stuff in my place. :(

Unfortunately 3 dvds have been damaged - R1 (Finding Nemo and Kingdom of Heaven Director's cut) and R3 (Mission Impossible 3)
the wierd is that Finding Nemo and MI3 does not show any evidence of rotting but it does not play to any of my players. Then the Kingdom Of Heaven, especially disc 1 (it formed a clear ring at the middle between the edges and the center) haaayyy...
mahal pa namain sila nung nabili ko yun dti.
