Well Go USA Acquires On the Job
May 24, 2013
Texas-based distributors Well Go USA have acquired all North American distribution rights to director Erik Matti's On the Job (2013), starring Piolo Pascual, Gerald Anderson, and Joel Torre. The Filipino crime thriller will be screened in the Director's Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival.
"On the Job reiterates that it is an exciting time for Filipino cinema. We are thrilled we were able to acquire the movie before its premiere in Cannes and can't wait to bring it to audiences in North America", said said Doris Pfardrescher, President, Well Go USA Entertainment.

From Twitch Film:
Baltasar Kormakur To Remake Erik Matti's ON THE JOB
June 27, 2013
Premiering as part of this year's Director's Fortnight selection in Cannes, Erik Matti's On The Job is based on the sort of story that is too strange to be fiction - a true life tale of prisoners released on day passes to work as hitmen, with prison officials working in collaboration with gangsters and high ranking politicians to make it all happen. It's the sort of story that has obvious dramatic appeal and so it comes as no surprise that it quickly caught the eye of several high ranking players in Hollywood.
And now word is out that Baltasar Kormakur (Contraband, 2 Guns) is attached to direct a US version of the story. How close this will hold to the Matti version is yet to be determined, with Deadline previously reporting Kormakur was pursuing a version based on his own research, but he's certainly no stranger to adapting material successfully for the US audience with Contraband being a remake of Icelandic offering Reykjavik-Rotterdam which Kormakur previously produced and starred in.
No writer or studio home yet announced for this, though XYZ Films - which represented the Matti film for international sales - are on board to produce.

This is my most anticipated film of 2013 both local and foreign. :D

but i do despise that Star Cinema narrator. I think the Cannes trailer was better. ;/

Cool (given 2 Guns is the current No. 1 film in the US)!!!
Any word if Kormakur will provide Piolo Pascual or Gerald Anderson cameo roles in the planned remake?
-
next week yata ito ipapalabas dito sa Baguio
-
Local showing starts August 28.
-
It started off slow, but it picks up and is very engaging. That might be the best-shot chase sequence I've ever seen in a local film.
Worth the visit. I didn't think we'd ever see a film like this under the Star Cinema banner.
-
Very good with quality production values. I think it's probably the best mainstream Filipino film this year.
-
ON THE JOB ***
Cast: Piolo Pascual, Joey Marquez, Gerald Anderson, Joel Torre, Michael De Mesa, Leo Martinez, Angel Aquino, Shaina Magdayao, Rayver Cruz, Vivian Velez, Empress Schuck, William Martinez, Rosanna Roces, Nino Muhlach.
Dir: Erik Matti.
A young detective and a veteran cop uncovers a nefarious scheme where inmates are surreptitiously released in order to do hit jobs for corrupt, high-ranking elected officials. Director Erik Matti is probably one of the very few MAINSTREAM Filipino director who deliver quality work. I'm not a fan of Tiktik but this solid thriller, which is an improvement, shows that he's a force to be reckoned with. Though far from perfect, it's got flair, style and very well-paced (though I must say he should stop casting Joey Marquez). I hope more mainstream Pinoy films follow suit.
-
just got home from a screening of it here in Baguio.
pwede na siguro akong di manood ng Filipino film ngayong taon. :)

compliment sir.
eh eto lang yata ang inaabangan kong Filipino film ngayong taon.
-
it was good, bihira na ko manood ng pinoy movies dahil karamihan lumalabas ngayon walang kwenta but this one was worth it :)
-
Been meaning to watch this as we haven't seen any pinoy action flicks hit the big screen. Glad to hear that it's decent.
-
Mahusay!
Good job ON THE JOB! ;D
-
Watched it last night. Would definitely watch more filipino films if only they were of this calibre!
-
Thumbs up on this movie kahit madaming bad words ako narinig sa movie, haha overall im impressed what erik matti done on this movie. :)

Nino Muhlach was in that film? William Martinez too??
Holy Quentin Tarantino, Batman!!!
-
I've been very critical, and mostly have an unfair opinion of Filipino movies in general but, if there was only one film I would watch this year it would be On The Job.
-
Nino Muhlach was in that film? William Martinez too??
Holy Quentin Tarantino, Batman!!!
yup, nino muhlach plays a drug lord, william martinez a prison guard..
great watch.. can't wait for this to be released in dvd/bd.. this will be shown in the US on sept 27.. may trailer na sa itunes movies.. and i heard a US company will release this in dvd/bd after...

I wonder if the Hollywood remake will involve any Filipinos in the cast.
I think Erik Matti should lobby for a cameo. :D
-
I think they should let him direct it.
Speaking of that, who would you cast in a Hollywood remake?
-
I hesitated first because I hated Matti's Tik-tik, but this, this is a very well crafted film...
On the ending though... I would have preferred if Daniel (Gerald) is the one who whacked Tatang (Torre) instead, killing his very own mentor... makes sense really, since Tatang is now expendable to Gen. Pacheco's group. It should have ended in full circle making Daniel as the new Hitman...

that's the beauty of the movie.. the unexpected turn of events.. that's what i initially thought would happen, but that unexpected ending really made the movie..

You may want to edit your review. Shaina Magdayao played the role of the senator's daughter, not Empress Schuck, and is Piolo Pascual's wife in the film, not his lover.

naks walang nagsabi ng negative sa otj. naexcite tuloy ako ;D

I wonder if body doubles were utilized for the jerjer scenes.

Canadian critic nominates ‘Breaking Bad’ actor to star in ‘On The Job’ Hollywood remake
InterAksyon.com · Wednesday, October 2, 2013 · 3:02 pm
Bryan Cranston as Walter White in 'Breaking Bad' and Joel Torre as Tatang in 'On The Job'.
A planned Hollywood remake of “On The Job” was announced as early as April even before it wowed critics during its world premiere at the Directors Fortnight section of the 66th Cannes International Film Festival.
The current North American theatrical release of “On The Job” has only fanned the flames for the Hollywood version. On Tuesday, one Canadian critic, Chris Bumbray of Joblo.com, nominated “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston to play Tatang, the lead role of the veteran hitman essayed so brilliantly by Joel Torre.
“This would be a great role for someone like Bryan Cranston in an American redux — which apparently is already on the books,” wrote Bumbray, who found both Torre and co-star Gerald Anderson “terrific” in their roles as prison inmates who get day passes to carry out assassinations for a crime syndicate run by military men and politicians in cahoots with prison officials.
Cranston won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series three consecutive times for his role as Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher turned drug manufacturer and kingpin, in the acclaimed series “Breaking Bad”.
XYZ Films, a Los-Angeles based production company, has obtained the “On The Job” story rights and assigned the project to Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur.
Anderson, who plays the other lead role of assassin-in-training, dropped the names of Hollywood heavyweights Tom Cruise and Mark Wahlberg (star of two Kormakur movies, “Contraband” and “2 Guns”) as potential lead actors in an interview with local media in June.

A writer is claiming it's the first Pinoy BD:

Can anyone confirm if The Road or Graceland are indeed out there in BD formats?
-
BTW, I checked Bluray.com and although there is a listing for The Road, there is no review present. For Graceland, there was a full review, but could this be considered a "Filipino" bluray? sure, the director has Filipino blood but the producers are foreigners...

I don't have it myself, but there is an Amazon listing for The Road Blu-ray:
http://www.amazon.com/The-Road-Blu-ray-TJ-Trinidad/dp/B009AFXUEY/ref=tmm_blu_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1386461526&sr=1-4
A quick google also found this announcement for the home video release:
http://one.neilrara.com/2012/06/20/the-road-movie-to-be-released-on-dvd-this-july/
I have the Blu-ray of Graceland. I guess this film can be considered a "middle-of-the-road" thing. It's in Filipino, has a Filipino-American director, a Filipino cast, a mixed crew & features a locally set story. Not sure, but I guess it's formally credited as a USA-Philippines co-production?

pre-order na ;)

http://www.mb.com.ph/otj-first-pinoy-film-in-blu-ray/
The linked article says the local DVD was supposed to be released today. Was anyone able to buy it?
-
I bought the local DVD.
Transfer is pristine.
It has the director's commentary and 17 minutes of deleted scenes. No making-of and no trailer. I'm wondering if this will be the same version of the film released on DVD/Blu-ray in the States, since the commentary is clearly meant for international audiences (explanation on Nino Muhlach being a famous child star, etc.)
By the way, the deleted scenes are weird to access. You access them by going to "Director's Commentary" on the menu.
-
I am eagerly waiting for the BD. I hope to be able to watch this again in crisp and beautiful 1080p.
-
Just got the local DVD, also preordered the BD from Amazon US!

saw the local release.. at 600p i'd rather buy the bd.. ;)

watched this last night! good film! yun nga lang nakakalunkot na nangyayari talaga yung mga ganito sa pilipinas.

Just thought if this now. Note that I'm picking actors to not just make a good film but to also make money. :D
I would go Mel Gibson or Denzel for the Tatang (Joel Torre) role and Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the Gerald Anderson role. Piolo would be played by James Franco. The warden would be Tim Robbins. Sarge Joey Marquez would be played by John Turturro. Piolo's father in law would be Alec Baldwin.
Angel Aquino would be played by Julianne Moore while Shaina's role should go to Lindsay Lohan or Anne Hathaway. Tatang's daughter should be played by Ellen Page (Juno). Vivian Velez (the handler, Thelma) should be played by Kim Basinger.
I'd probably set this movie in Boston or Philly.
-
De Niro as Tatang. Woody Harelson as sgt.
-
Finally saw the Star Cinema-released DVD of On The Job. It's easily the slickest Pinoy action movie that I've ever seen. It felt overrated though (or maybe I just had too much expectations). There's something off with the narrative's flow - it's is a bit disjointed & I didn't really connect with the characters, although Joel Torre is a standout. I also pre-ordered the international version on Buray. I heard that it's a different cut; I'm hoping that it's a better edited version.
-
It is a really good film, just watched it awhile ago,
but I can't help but feel na parang napakaDARK ng dating sa akin ng movie,
parang sobrang dilim ng plot, it good though...
-
I just dont feel fine hearing those PI's uttered in good scenes. Pwede namang wala ang mga yun. >:(
There could be a better actor than Joey Marquez. Papiyok-piyok pa siya. His voice is not nice for a serious movie like the OJT. :(
-
I think there is a good reason kung bakit si Joey Marquez ang napili, may scene doon si Joey with his son na effective naman, muntik nga ako ma-iyak :'(
Kung may Hollywood remake, siguro si Jim Carrey ang pipiliin ko na gumanap sa role ni "Tsong" Joey.
-

I agree with this. There was an interesting article in Esquire when the film came out - Marquez stepped in for Richard Gomez, who dropped out to run for office in Ormoc. Not sure he would've done a better job, but he probably wouldn't have come across as a comic relief.
They also said Gerald Anderson role was initially offered to John Lloyd Cruz, who couldn't fit it into his schedule. It also implies that Piolo Pascual was pushed out of the project for a while, and Derek Ramsay was attached to the film (I'm guessing in Pascual's role).
It certainly would have made for a very different film.
The only non-negotiable in the casting was Joel Torre. 8)

i don't remember where i read this, but the international cut of OJT does not include scenes with JOey Marquez's son storyline in the movie. the lovemaking scene of piolo and shaina was also not shown in the international cut..
-
I liked it a lot. Sana ganito man lang mga pelikula natin palagi.
-
For me, this was an ok movie. A+ for Matti's effort in directing. At least, this movie is a nice refresher for Philippine cinema. Si Gerald Anderson, parang hindi bagay sa ganitong role. Parang sa mukha niya is mabait siya, not a scary killing dude. Kahit may bigo-bigote pa. Tsaka parang ang awkward nung love-making scene. This will be remade by Hollywood, right? Sana ma-polish pa ng husto. ^-^

I think the casting of Gerald Anderson was great and was surprised with his acting skill. His portrayal of the character was very good. IMO, it was the conversion of him being a naive / "young" crime guy in the world and into him gradually becoming like "Tatang". Hence, he was being trained to be a stone cold assassin. He portrayed his too mabait / naive character when he was told to kill somebody on his own silently and to look them in the eye (tama ba?).

i agree. personally i do not like Gerald Anderson. but his role here was perfect for him..
-
Gerald is ok except his voice; it doesn't fit his look. Joey is surprisingly effective. The veteran supporting actors are all great. Piolo I think is the weakest link. He faded in the background.

It has been a while when I came across a Filipino movie that I completely watch from first to end. The last Filipino movie I watched on DVD was Insiang.
I like the dark tone of the movie however it wasn't dark enough. I think they have scratched the surface of making an impact not only in the movie industry but soceity as well.
Characters were likeable but there wass room for more development. They tried this when Acosta (Marquez) was trying to be the father to his son. Daniel being the good son to his family, etc. I think to many characters trying to be depicted in short vignettes in an already long 2 hour movie.
Gerald was out of place, I like his demeanor and swagger and all but hearing him curse was I think unnatural for him. Hindi malutong yung PIs or Tis. It was close to being "Budoy" like, no pun intended.
What I really like was the soundtrack/score. It certainly fits the scene and it was not distracting.
Overall, its something different from my perspective. I haven't watched that too many of Filipino films in the last decade and I think its time to watch more.

meron yun kina gerald. wala yun kay shaina...
-
ordered bluray of this at amazon.. recently bought the local dvd also but hesitant at first because of the price..(600p). from what i see, the local dvd version has director's commentary and 19 deleted scenes with optional commentary while the international bluray release has 'the making of' featurette and deleted scenes, not sure if it has the director's commentary.. and also not sure if they have the same deleted scenes included..
-
^ Based on the Blu-ray.com review, there is no director's commentary on the BD release. The following are the listed BD extras:
Making Of (480i; 6:37) is a pretty rote EPK with interviews and clips from the film.
Deleted Scenes (480i; 37:52)
Trailer (1080p; 2:07)

Mukhang masmaganda pa rin yung local DVD release.
-
watching it the 2nd time, the first dinner scene of joel torre and angel aquino and his daughter and introduction of her bf, all their gestures made a lot of sense :)
-
I watched this yesterday and liked it... Hindi ako normally nanonood ng Pinoy film, but dahil sa usapan dito na curious ako...
The movie was really nice.. sana laging ganito ang mga pelikulang pinoy. Kaya naman palang gumawa ng matinong pelikula ng Pinoy eh... bat ayaw gayanin ng iba?
-
Watched this over the weekend. Thumbs up for the production. I really liked the musical scores but they could have improved it by balancing the upbeat ones with the dark scores for the dark scenes. Parang na-overpower nung upbeat scores yung buong movie.
Just thought if this now. Note that I'm picking actors to not just make a good film but to also make money. :D

Eh kay Diana (Gerald's GF) sinong bagay mag portray??? >:D
Mas okay siguro kung detroit. kaso, i'm wondering if the gun--for-hire scheme can really be tagged into U.S. politics?? Kasi dito sa Philippine context, we can really relate since this is one of Philippine politic's well-known secret. Dunno if they can sell it on an American context though..
-
I have the Pinoy released DVD which is loaded with features and the picture quality is excellent. I've also ordered the Bluray from Amazon. It's just taking time to get here because I live outside the US. I know that the US released version is a shorter cut, which is fine by me because I think that it needs the trimming. It's weird that the audio commentary is not included in the US release since as far as I can remember in the local release, the commentary was done in English. I'll verify that when it arrives.

I agree with some comments here re gerald anderson not being bagay sa role, masyado busog ang itsura nya for a preso na hitman. Also sa sobrang dami ng PI minsan paranf off na hindi na realistic. But overall this is a good movie for a pinoy film.
-
meron yun kina gerald. wala yun kay shaina...
sir sa dvd or sa bluray copy?
-
I'll verify that when it arrives.
Thanks. Looking forward to your verification. The way Matti did the commentary also made it seem it would be for and international release of the film - he was explaining that Nino Muhlach was a former child star, etc.
Also, can someone with both versions comment on the difference in running time? How many minutes were excised?
-
On the DVD the uncut sex scenes of Piolo/Shaina and Gerald/whatsherface are there. As well as the cameo with Rosanna Roces and the subplot of Joey Marquez's character's son.
I have no info on the Bluray edition.

just watched my copy of OTJ bd from amazon. haven't watched the international cut yet in its entirety but the HD was superb, just the deleted scenes and the making of which was just a short behind the scenes and interviews with the cast. the BD includes new and extended deleted scenes not found in the dvd. the dvd however includes the director's commentary on each deleted scene, the bd just plays the deleted scenes continuously without any commentary. i especially liked the extended tatang teaching daniel scenes showing how daniel evolved to become ready for the killing.
i guess you would have to double dip the bd and the local dvd to get all the special features. sayang lng sana nainclude un director's commentary on the movie and deleted scenes sa bd.
-
Thanks syoti. Can you confirm the difference in running times of the two versions?
-
this is definitely one of the best pinoy movies of all time.

You mean nabitin ka sa topless sexscene? Meron isa ah o dalawa??? ;D
-

the international version runs 116min and the local version 120min. as discussed the international version does not include Acosta's son angle and the piolo shaina sex scene and the last scene where rayver cruz get's piolo's iphone in the evidence room. these were not included in the deleted scenes of the bd as well..

the local version has a topless sex scene of shaina and piolo and that of gerald and dawn. not full frontal though.. although may full frontal sa deleted scenes ng bd..(inmates at the prison shower room)

i watched the bluray
first of all, its AMAZING to see a pinoy movie in full 1080p high definition. why did it take this long!?!!?!?!?!?
pinoy directors/film makers need to stress using bluray if they want to show the world how they meant to see the film.
The movie itself was great. it had a bit of a twist at the end I didnt see coming. pretty good thriller. thought the story was strong.
also being on bluray the sound is nice too! if you nave a PROPERLY setup surround sound system, meaning 5.1 or more. 3 speakers up front, surround in the back, etc. the sound team should also get credit. they used the entire sound space nicely. with rains and gunshots going across the back speakers when it should.. and no pinoys. just cause you have speakers everywhere, if they are all playing at the same time with the same thing, ,that doesnt mean you have surround sound. it means you have speakers everywhere playing the same sound. its different.
I was very satisfied on this movie all together, but really a step and hoping to see more pinoy movies in HD bluray

Just seen the international cut in this BD. I like it better than the local cut: more focused, lean and efficient. The ending is different and there's no subplot with Joey characters' family. in the local cut there was a sex scene that was an inter-cut between 2 couples. In the international but, it's only a sex scene for one couple. I think there are also some minor scenes that's been cut or deleted. But, I think I also noticed some added small scenes that's not in the local cut. I've seen the local cut a while back so I can't remember for sure.

Finally saw what they're raving about last 2013. I hardly see anything local since the time of FPJ reruns on tv from my high school days. I just saw the international cut probably based on the comments/posts in this thread. Too bad, I didn't see Shaina's scene and just Dawn's little thingies.
It's good in general except there was miscast in some roles like the lead Gerald, Papa P., Angel, Rayver. Probably they had some compromise with the ABS CBN managers to use their awful talents and make this film going through Star Cinema banner. Joey Marquez was quite good as this obnoxious cop but I can see little emotions in his face unlike Gerald and Angel who doesn't know how to act or sometimes overacts. The best was showing his dirty finger in the end chase hehe.
Joel Torre carried this movie and it's not a surprise since he is a character actor. Michael de Mesa was also good and quite better than Leo Martinez. The soundtrack was also good since they used local bands.
There's one scene that caught me, there's this prisoner with the same actual shots as Gerald did in prison and it turned out he was just a replacement. Probably it led the audience his death or some sorts. Astig.
They could have used some unknown cast who can really act and not these tisoys/mestizas who doesn't belong in the slums of Manila. Found it to be unrealistic if they want to stick to an indie vibe. An Evoque-driving NBI agent? Come on. Leila de Lima would be envious of him.

Everything We Know About HBO's On The Job So Far
The film's sequel will be available as a six-part HBO Asia Original series.
Erik Matti's award-winning crime thriller On The Job proved to be a hell of a ride when it premiered in 2013. We were all thrown into the world of two hired killers who were temporarily released from prison to assassinate political targets, and the two law enforcers whose paths they cross.
Eight years later and we're finally getting the sequel in the form of an HBO Asia Original six-part series. As expected, On The Job will also be filled with heart-stopping suspense. This time, the series will deal with even more current issues and challenges in today's world.

Anything written by Michiko Yamamoto I'll watch. Matti directing? Cherry on the cake.

Venice Facetime: Erik Matti Director of ‘On The Job: The Missing 8’
Erik Matti is one of the Philippines’ most celebrated filmmakers, working across genres. “On The Job” bowed at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2013, where it was nominated for the SACD Prize, and went on to global and domestic acclaim.
The film was inspired by a real-life scandal in which prison inmates were temporarily released from prison to work as contract killers on behalf of politicians and high ranking military officials.
Matti returns to the subject, which he has expanded as a franchise, in “On The Job: The Missing 8,” which is playing in competition at the Venice Film Festival. Again inspired by true events, the film follows a corrupt journalist seeking justice for his colleagues, and a convict who is frequently brought out of prison to perform assassinations.
The difference this time is that the franchise expansion is as a series for HBO, with the events of the 2013 film treated as the first two episodes.

‘On the Job: The Missing 8’: Film Review - Venice 2021
Cinema genre specialist Erik Matti and his screenwriter spouse, Michiko Yamamoto, return to the world of 2013’s On the Job with this ambitious three-hour-and-twenty-eight-minute sequel, which will soon be re-edited, along with its predecessor, into a six-episode limited miniseries for HBO Asia. Even at near-Irishman length, it works pretty darn well as a feature, widening the cops-‘n’-crooks scope of the Manila-set first film to focus on the role of journalism in holding politicians to account.

ON THE JOB: THE MISSING 8 ***1/2
Cast: John Arcilla, Dennis Trillo, Dante Rivero, Lotlot De Leon, Christopher de Leon, Eric Fructuoso, Vandolph Quizon, Leo Martinez, Joey Marquez.
Dir: Erik Matti.
A radio host who's a vocal supporter of a powerful mayor start to question his allegiance when his colleagues at the newspaper he works for disappears. This was screened as a 3.5 hour film in Venice where it deservedly won the Best Actor prize for the lead actor John Arcilla. I saw it in the form of a miniseries on HBO Go Asia and I've been told apart from editing in titles and credits in between chapters, it's pretty much the same film so I'll review it as such. Yes, it's a very long film but director Erik Matti's pacing is brisk and personally, I think the arc of the lead character benefits from such a long running time which contributes to his performance. If you're a Filipino or if you follow Filipino politics at all, you can definitely see the parallels and what this film is saying about a certain someone. But even if you don't, this is still a pretty slick and exciting political thriller which will give you a lot to chew on. Excellent film.

On the Job: The Missing 8 has been submitted as our entry to the Best International Feature category at the Oscars and at the same the HBO miniseries version which edits both films as a limited series has been nominated for an International Emmy. I have no idea how it would qualify for both. I hope FAP knows what it’s doing.

Those of you who want to see the continuous 3.5 hour cut of On the Job: The Missing 8 can do so in November when it will have a commercial theatrical run in order to qualify for the Oscars.

The 3.5 hour cut of On the Job: The Missing 8 will start screening this week in select Ayala Cinemas.
