Title: FOREIGN LANGUAGE Movies on DVD

Any Foreign Movies afficionados?  What DVD do you recommend?

My favorite foreign movies are Raise the Red Lantern, Ju Dou, and The Story of Qui Ju. Gong Li is so good in all these movies. She's probably like our Nora Aunor but she can do more especially sex scenes. She actually made some Hollywood movies but not as good as her movies with Zhang Yimou.

i had little interest in foreign film before
until, i read some interesting foriegn film reviews in Playboy...(he..he..he..i guess i'm one of the few who really read the articles ;) ). so i went to my local video store and borrowed The Wedding Banquet (1993) ...this is a humorous comedy ...directed by ang lee. about 2 gay men and a female illegal alien in the u.s. who is a tenant of one of the gay men.

Besides being visually beautiful, this movie has a complex emotional core. The people involved are not right or wrong, good guys or bad guys, but family and lovers who honestly want what is best for each other. Their definition of what is best is the conflict. The characters are well thought out and executed.

language is in chinese, but with english subtitles. i highly recommend  this, but it is not available on dvd yet. :-[ ...so just borrow a vhs and just buy the dvd later. :)

another personal favorite is Farinelli: Il Castrato (1995)  (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004TX5F/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20) the musical score really impressed me!...great acting, great costumes and this one is already available on dvd and the language is in italian or french, with english or spanish subtitles.

Ooooh, good one bently. Love it, love it, love it. It is a funny film, but sad just the same. It gives you a glimpse of what or how gay men cope with their sexuality especially the difficult task of coming out to the conservative parents.

I saw that one back in '94 when I was still in Manila .. SM City ... the first Ang Lee movie I saw. I have followed his films since then.

One thing that ruined it for me was the other people watching in the theaters. If you don't like to see two men kissing in big screen, why go and say 'ewwwww' during that scene? F$#@&*(! stupid !  >:( >:( >:(

I do have it on VHS.

that's right, bently. the wedding banquet was great! i had the same experience watching it at greenbelt. when the two guys kissed, the gaggle of obviously colegiala girls behind me shrieked. bummer. what were they expecting, cinderella? ang lee is really a master of different genres. another great foreign (taiwanese) film he did was eat drink man woman (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005JKG1/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20). this was the ang lee after wedding banquet and before sense and sensibility, his breakout hollywood project. so he's done domestic drama, period classics, contemporary american suburbia (the ice storm -- great acting from the likes of christina ricci), period western (ride with the devil), and martial arts. the guy's a genius! -- perhaps the next stanley kubrick, who sprawled over different genres as well. the chinese directors are really on a roll -- why oh why can't we do the same?  :-/

Post by: FLIM on Feb 03, 2002 at 01:13 AM
Even tho i found the wedding banquet a real scream I dont think Ang lee is in the same league as STANLEY KUBRICK.Kubrick just didnt cross genres ,he redefined them!

Title: Re: FOREIGN MOVIES
Post by: Jude on Feb 03, 2002 at 10:49 AM
It's a bit strange how most girls here in the Philippines seem to be "turned off" by man-on-man action, while on the net, almost all "slash" (man-on-man fan fiction) writers and readers are female! Diba if guys are "turned on" by girl-on-girl action, the reverse should be true for girls? And I'm not buying Joey Tribiani's theory.

When I finally got to see "Happy Together" on DVD, for the life of me, I couldn't see what all the fuss was about. Chungking Express and In the Mood for Love look a lot better.

I think I'll take Ang Lee over Stanley Kubrick most any day. For one thing, he's a lot better for one's continued mental health.

In the realm of the senses, ang napaka kontrebersiyal na Japanese film. nakaka-shock!!! R18 na ang rating nito eh.

Last Tango In Paris - Rated X nung time niya, mga early 70's ba iyon?  Marlon Brando as you've never seen him before. BTW yugn X dati sa standards natin ngayon eh Rated R na lang.  Me Region 3 ito sa Astro, try to pick it up.. ;D

well i just got my copy of eat drink man woman (http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=MGD002584)
$13.67 @ DeepDiscountDVD.com

Director: Ang Lee

DVD info:
distributor: Seville (Canada)
1.85:1 16:9 Enhanced (Anamorphic)
Region 1
NTSC
DVD-9 (average 8MB bit rate!)
Audio: Mandarin 2.0 and French 2.0
Subtitle: English (removable)
animated chapter select index

Extras:
Cast and Director info
Trailer: Eat Drink Man Woman (fullscreen)
Additional Trailers: In The Mood For Love, The Seasons and Chinese Box

This movie was a real treat... everyone with their own little conflict, and the Sunday dinner was their get together for announcements, even though they all live in the same house.
As mentioned, not much communication happens between the family members. They all turn to a friend for comfort, but as these friends start to fade away or distance themselves, the characters find relief from unexpected sources. The little touches really add depth to the movie, and some comic scenes lighten up the experience.
Highly recommended, especially if you like adult oriented family dramas.

Image:
Excellent!
Color is nicely saturated, Blacks are black, and shadow detail is very good. The print is almost perfect, with only occasional tiny speckles appearing. The compression bit-rate averages at 8MBit, which is why the image is superb! The transfer is anamorphic, and also has info for full-screen/pan&scan mode!

Subtitle:
Optional English only.
Large white text with black borders, stays on-screen for proper amount of time for reading, and is correctly synced to the speech.

Audio:
Very good sounding soundtrack, since this is mostly a dialouge driven movie perfectly the Stereo 2.0 is suitable for this movie.

Y Tu Mama Tambien (And Your Mother Too) - Unrated Edition  (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005JL57/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20)

A GREAT FILM!, from the director of Great Expectations (1998)  (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000035Z20/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20) and A Little Princess (1995) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/6304698623/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20)

On the surface, this is a comedic 'road trip' movie, one of the best ever made. Beneath the surface, there lies a poignant, meaningful coming of age tale.

This lively, well acted and beautifully photographed film is highly recommended!

This film is not for the sexually faint of hearth since there is a lot of frontal nudity and sex scenes to make this feel almost like a soft porn film.

this dvd is a keeper! ;)

I love watching foreign films.  The problem now is I don't know any store here in Manila selling a good number of this kind of movies. I used to watch a lot of them in vhs format courtesy of that store in Virra Mall ( 2nd floor )  allegedly owned/managed by  Ricky Lee. Foreign movies that I wanna see in DVD format: Europa, Europa by Agnieszka Holland, a gripping tale about the horrors of war  from the point of view of a Jewish Boy; Oliver, Oliver a domestic drama on how a family coped with the loss of a son; Passolini movies, the most memorable and I say  a "gory as gory can be"  film being his Salo; Paul Vaerhoven's films before Hollywood got the better of him; Pedro Almodovar's campy movies with the exception of Matador which ran out of copy; Jamon, Jamon where a young Penelope showed her breasts several times; Eric Roehmer's films  noted for the repartees about morality; the movies of the Chinese  excellent directors- Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige;  and more than a dozen more.  I also love the Iranian film " Children from Heaven" from where I believe Gil Portes got the idea for his movie Mga Munting Tinig.  Well, who can forget the Japanese erotic/pornographic  piece In the Realm of the Senses which Gallaga admitted , inspired him to do Skorpio Nights. I hope somebody can  give me the names of the stores where I can  buy these films.

The guy who wrote U turn and three Kings wrote this. I'm a sucker for all things blaxploitaion, even if it is a spoof, but you don't need to have that bias. Coolness. Very funny.  ;) And, of course, Denise. . . . ;D

The problem now is I don't know any store here in Manila selling a good number of this kind of movies.... I hope somebody can  give me the names of the stores where I can  buy these films.

Try Astrovision for Region 3 releases. There are some foreign titles available.

For Region 1 releases, try the DVD Marketplace section.  The sellers offer foreign titles every so often.  And their prices are definitely much better than if you get these imports from the commercial stores around Metro Manila.

Foreign language R1s to be released in the coming weeks and on my pre-order list:

>> THREE COLORS TRILOGY (RED/WHITE/BLUE) by Kieslowski

>> CINEMA PARADISO - NEW VERSION (This contains the extended version and the original version.  The extended version is WIDESCREEN, as compared to the FULL SCREEN version that's now available in the local shops)

>> BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - RESTORED EDITION/ CRITERION COLLECTION  (This is not the Disney version, altho that one is also a keeper.)

>> WAR AND PEACE (Not to be confused with the Hollywood version.  This is the 7-hour Russian feature film that won the Oscar way back when.  There are 2 DVD releases listed.  The first one is on 3 discs/FULL SCREEN.  The second one -- on 4 discs/WIDESCREEN -- was scheduled for release last December but has been delayed in production.)

I am hoping to see the Israeli movie LATE MARRIAGE which was banned in last year's Israeli festival in Glorietta or was it Greenbelt. Also, the controversial Monica Belluci film IRREVERSIBLE.

I recently saw Happy Times by Zhang Yimou. Not that great but still an important film.
