what's the difference between the two players?

The most basic difference between the AC RYAN ESSENTIAL and AC RYAN PLAY ON! HD is that the Essential is a no net work NMT. Both units use the latest realtek chipsets and both have impressive GUIs.

do they have the same GUI?

No they do not both have the same GUI, the user interface of the PLAY ON! HD includes menu systems that allow you to connect and navigate the web (bit torrent, internet radio, surfing, picasa, etc) while the Essential  has no internet connection as its a no network media player. However both GUIs are powerful and user friendly.

Please check out www.acryan.com for details.

What is available currently in the Philippines is only the original Play On HD, the HD2 is still a few months away and will be slightly more expensive.

The rear and the remote are exactly the same as the Mede8er 500x. The side and internals are also similar. ???

what i like most about these AC Ryan players is that they are constantly releasing new firmware for them and expanding the file-types they support. I've had files that just didn't play on a previous media player and I always thought it was a problematic file but it played perfectly on the AC Ryan :)

Med500X clone?? ;D ;D

A.C.Ryan, Mede8er, and Datage HDPro are made by the same original design manufacturer.

A.C.Ryan and Mede8er customize these boxes with their own firmware enhancements. A.C.Ryan and Mede8er protect their firmware by putting checks that try to identify and differentiate if the firmware is running on the original or not. In the past the firmware check was only during firmware flashing. Newer firmware checks occur after flashing. Sometimes, this added protection can cause semi-bricking when the latest firmware is flashed.

The added firmware support drives the price higher than the cheaper Measy and Kaiboer. A.C.Ryan PlayOn HD and the Mede8er MED500x have been around much longer than Measy and Kaiboer models, hence their popularity. Although they use the same Realtek 1073DD+ chipset, the PlayOn HD and MED500x have smaller flash memory than the Measy and Kaiboer models. I am sure engineers from AC Ryan and Mede8er are struggling to fit new features like added file support with the flash memory limit. Newer models like the PlayOn HD2 should have much more flash memory. It might be worthwhile to wait.

The AC Ryan PLAY ON! HD and Essential are stand alone players. You can however fit hard drives in them or hook them up to external drives.

But I'm pretty sure MALAKI ang pagkakaiba ng firmware ng bawat brand,
they may look exactly the same, pero may dahilan yan kung bakit mas mahal...

 ;)

I wouldn't call it MALAKI. They use the same chipset with the same SDK from Realtek. There are subtle differences specially on firmware using the newer SDK releases. The UI skinning is a bit flashier but navigating around, you'll know it's the same SDK underneath.

Another reason the price is higher is the casing they used on the MED500x and AC Ryan PLAY ON! HD. On them is a complicated double skin metal casing on the inside and plastic shell on the outside. The Kaiboer and the Measy have a simpler extruded aluminum box with plastic (shielded) front and back panel. A small change in manufacturing cost translates to a huge difference in landed price over here. Believe it or not but the casing can cost more than the electronics. Checkout the difference between the Popcorn Hour A-200 and the A-210.

To keep the cost down, Kaiboer and Measy used a slide in plastic tray for the hard drive, while the MED500x and PLAY ON! HD uses a metal plate at the bottom to mount the hard drive. The hard drives should run cooler on the MED500x and PLAY ON! HD because the metal tray conducts heat away better.

not necessarily rebrand. kalakaran na yan sa electronics & electrical appliances. different companies buy from a single manufacturer (guess which country? ;)) then sell the item as their own brand. may products pa nga na basically the same, then with a little "make-up" and marketing magic, high-end audiophile version na.

Ac Ryan does not re brand mede8er media players. AC Ryan is a technology company based in Denmark.  The Realtek chipsets, used inside the units are from Taiwan, but the media player is assembled and packed in China.

The software and programing is all done in Europe. AC Ryan prides itself in the superior but easy to use  GUI system, powerful performance and very constant firmware updates.

AC Ryan is one of the most popular media players in Europe.

AC Ryan products? From personal experience, electronic components quality, not so good. My friend and I have same product model (not an NMT). We have the same problem. The AC adapter (double DC voltages) of our units died on us. Both out of warranty (just over 1 year). And the power-on hours most likely didn't even reach half a year equivalent. So the product itself is already unusable. Since most of the hardware are made in China. I would really doubt its quality.

So tell me if anybody have an AC Ryan product that lasts really for a long time.

But with my WD NMT product (Gen1), although the unit heats up a lot, after several years, still working. Now, that is real quality.

I can't comment on AC Ryan products of the past, but the new media players all have 2 years warranty which is better then most competing brands, so if your AC Ryan stops working with in the first 2 years, we will fix or replace for you.

The AC Ryan Play On HD has a new firmware update, I think architectural audio had updated all the ac ryan stock that they have, but in case they did not, you can download the firmware from www.acryan.com. Enjoy your new media player.

I've been an AC Ryan playon HD user for more than a year. My wife bought the unit when she was in singapore. Alll I can say is ok naman sya for my needs though firmware support is really bad. Just make sure you  use the latest stable firmware(which is still a release candidate for quite sometime).
Then they have promised a GUI 2.0 firmware that would come by dec 2010 but up to now, it is at beta stage :)

check out the firmware releases here:

The beta version of GUI 2.0 works well. In fact all AC Ryan Play ON! HD and essentials sold in the Philippines have the latest firmware installed. The newest firmware represents a significate improvement in the user interface and performance of the AC Ryan media players.

playonHD user here for a year now (also bought from SG). as far as playing movies, it's does it's job ok. on earlier firmwares (3875 and below i think) some movies (mkv files) didn't show pictures and needed to be remuxed. on newer firmwares (based from SDK 3 and 4) this seems to have been solved. i found firmwares based on SDK 3 to be really buggy so i'm currently using GUI 2.0 Beta (SDK 4). so far, ok naman apart from the sluggish menu. I also tried the hacked mede8er firmware with this and parang pareho lang naman with the other firmwares.

the only major problem that i have with this player is that I can't seem to access it via NAS mode with my computer. but from POHD, i can access my other NAS just fine and stream movies to it. then again it might be a problem with my router.

i also bought POHD2 (realtek 1185)for my father-in-law and so far, no complaints from him.

The thing I like with this Playon player is the ability to play the dvd files(VOB etc)  "as is".  No ripping needed. Plays just like a dvd would on a dedicated player.
This is my first and only media player so I don't know what other brands are like this.

Unfortunately, it does not play the BD menus.  Hopefully, the new "official" firmware of the GUI 2.0 can play this.

official GUI 2.0 firmware is now available for 1073 based POHDs. installed it in my unit last weekend. interface is significantly faster and the auto-scan feature can now be turned off. apart from that, it's the same as the beta firmware. i'm pretty satisfied with it so far and will be using it instead of the hacked mede8er firmware.

Loading and playing files is similar to 4824 FW version with regards to speed.(faster )

bro merong sa "set-up" na setting for HDD format.  turn off mo lang.  initial setting kasi nyan naka "on".

Hi Guys,

Need your expert advise..this is my first NMT..i bought an AC Ryan PlayOn HD2 last week..so far i like the picture quality..colors are brilliant..GUI is great especially the movie jukebox.

Here is my problem right now..i tried playing movies with DTS 5.1 (1536kb/s) mkv files..but after a minute of playing the movie the sound disappeared and then came back after a few seconds, after a few minutes the sound disappeared again and came back again after a few seconds.  Its kinda hard for me to figure out the problem and badly need your help to solve this one.  By the way, here's my current setup

TV = LG LD460
HT = LG HT805PM (5.1 / DD / DTS capable)
NMT = AC Ryan PlayOn HD2

i connect my HT to the AC Ryan via optical.

Thanks!

try to isolate the issue. use a different optical cable, try to use the player in a different HT using optical too. yung HT ba namamatay pag nawawala yung sound?

to my fellow ac.ryan nmt owners, I just woul like to share that our realtek based nmts are capable of playing 3D mkv like the SBS type, just connect it to a 3D ready plasma/led/lcd then select the proper 3D setting that match your mkv 3D file type then you're go to go, enjoy 3D content from our ac.ryan. in my opinion its pq is comparable to a 3D blu-ray player. ;D

Sir taiguru, lahat ba ng model kaya mag play ng 3D mkv? interested in hd mini 2 :D

Hi, you need to use the AC Ryan Wifi USB dongle. Its P950 each. Most stores selling AC Ryan also sell the wifi dongle. It will work perfectly with the Play On HD.

According to the site http://www.acryan.com/product/playonhd2/specifications/   it can only handle up to 2TB (under Storage Supported). But if I remember correctly, HD2 is using a Realtek 1185 chipset which should support 3TB. Maybe AC Ryan is just being conservative with limitations? I don't suppose you can borrow a 3TB from a friend? ;D

What's in the HD2 that's not in the HD1, and how much is the HD2?

the new GUI is smoother on the HD2 compared to the HD1 because of the faster processor. afaik, HD2 can play BD rips but with simple menu only while the HD1 can't.

The price of the AC Ryan Play On HD1 is P8,300 while the AC Ryan Play on HD2 is P9,900. The HD2 uses a newer faster processor, is USB 3.0 and has gigabyte LAN. The picture quality of the HD2 is sharper and more detailed then the HD1.

The AC Ryan Play ON mini 2:
The Playon!HD Mini 2 Full HD Network Media Streamer from AC Ryan has a pretty small footprint and is able to stream multimedia content (videos, photos, music) right from our network; in case we have attached to it an USB Flash Drive or external HDD, we can play back the multimedia contents locally. The device can be also connected wirelessly to the network via an accessory sold separately.

The Device Internals

The unit can be opened relatively easy, by removing two screws from the back and lifting the clips on each side; the plastic clips are the main reason we must be very careful when opening the device, because these can break; in the older PCB revisions, near the central chip we could also find a mini PCI-E slot, which now seems to be removed:

The brain of this unit is the Realtek RTD1185DD System on a Chip, with the CPU at 500Mhz:

AC Ryan Playon!HD Mini 2 Full HD Network Media Streamer

User Interface
After starting up the Playon!HD Mini2 with the remote, a splash screen will appear on the TV, confirming that the firmware is loading; the screen will go blank again for a few seconds and after that the main menu will appear:

The menu options are located in the top left corner and on the same screen we can find the connectivity icons, along with the “Recently Added Music” and “Recently Added Movies” sections, which become populated after the connected media has been scanned:

The Movies menu shows the video files the streamer has found after the search is completed; the files can be shown in multiple layouts, as we will see later, by pressing the Menu button, to access additional options:

The Options tab in this menu allows us to sort and show the video content by type, name, size and so on; here we can also modify the view type (thumbnails, list or preview mode):

After selecting Preview mode, we will have a small video window on the left side, along with the list of videos on the right:

The Playon!HD Mini 2 comes with an attractive and simple design chassis and has a small size so it’s perfect to install it near our TV; it is ideal to point the remote to the device when sending commands, otherwise it possible the current command won’t register properly. For signaling the on/off status of the streamer, AC Ryan has chosen to use its frontal illuminated logo, which is red when the device is off and white when in operation; if the command we are sending with the remote is received by the device, the frontal logo will simply flash once.

The Mini 2 streamer also has two holes in the back of the chassis, which are covered with rubber and the early samples contained on the internal board an empty slot for placing a PCIe card; AC Ryan is more than likely thinking to include a WiFi card in the next iteration, with two external antennas, instead of using an USB dongle, which occupies a spare USB port.

The streamer can be easily accessed through the network and the NAS functionality is enabled when an external storage device is attached. We can observe quite a difference between the WiFi transfer speeds and the wired ones:

The GUI 2.0 is nicely organized, but there is still a small delay between the time we send the command and when it’s executed (the same thing we have experienced with the Sitecom MD-272 HDD TV Media Player). Some of the most known Internet websites can be accessed through the device, but since this is a media device, it would be great to see in the next software revisions the IMDB service integrated too. Before accessing Instant Messaging (eBuddy) or Facebook, we are prompted to insert a third party typing tool like a keyboard, to make the experience smoother; unfortunately, the device is only equipped with two USB ports and in case we already have connected the USB WiFi dongle and the external storage device, there is no port left to insert the keyboard; there is, however, a workaround and this would mean attaching the devices which need only a small amount of power like the WiFi dongle and the multimedia keyboard to a separate USB hub.

There are also some small occasional issues with the Internet Services like Picasa and Shoutcast, when the applications report an error regarding the Internet connectivity (even if the device is fully connected). The APIs from these services are part of the Realtek SDK, many of these errors have been already reported inside the user forums, so we now have to wait for an update from them.

As previously mentioned, this device is a streamer, which means that it does not feature internal storage capability; however, we can always attach to it an external USB storage device, like a Flash Drive, or even better, a 2.5'' HDD.

Considering the size of the device and power consumption, it would have been great if AC Ryan would have kept the Bittorent client functionality, which could have been functional only when an external storage device would have been attached.

lahat ba ng AVI files npplay ng AC ryan? wala ba kayo naencounter na problem sa pagplay ng files?

just bought a media player last night (clue: brand si X). nadisappoint ako, kasi yung ibang AVI files ko hindi nya napplay. for instance, ung Spiderman film in AVI-Xvid format. basic format ang avi tapos hindi maplay. kainis lang. e most of my movies are in AVI. ayoko na yun, ill just sell it.

a friend told me about this AC Ryan... worry ko lang baka namimili din ng files to.

Also, how do I watch my 1080 files in full screen? I seems to default to 16:9 aspect ratio instead of fullscreen 1080 aspect.

Some of those models are already obsolete and not being supported with firmware updates based on the website and i haven't been able to use my 500GB HDD yet on the "Essential" but my hi-def issue has already been resolved. Good enough for a back-up player.

What particular issue did you have? Wow, obsolete and still being sold locally with the same retail price?

I have 2 seagate 500gb hdd's which aren't being read by the acr essential but are working fine in my egreat s100. I'll try reformatting them once I complete backing it up. Not the same retail price as when it was originally released so it's a bang for the buck player IMO. The 2 years service warranty still makes it worth it but not as a primary player. Other known brands have better PQ for my eyes.

These player packs a punch when playing all your beloved collection...but that's about it...please read on...

Got mine last week from a friend who went on a business trip in NZ.

I got the PV73100 P+ (Updated Playon HD 1 - can play TrueHD and stuff) as I just need a no non-sense player (plus limited budget).

It pretty much plays any file types I throw at it...which is basically a given as it's a media player.  But again, that's about it.

Other that it's aesthetic design and an updated firmware (which I'm not sure if it's an advantage really...saved me from the pains of upgrading as upgrade path is very confusing from the official AC Ryan forums..)...below are some of my gripes:

- GUI 2.0 firmware looks really nice and savvy....but is effing slooowwww! It's like click-and-wait-then-click-again(thanks to it's old Realtek processor and limited memory capacity - I heard the old but ugly one is better in functionality, but I may be wrong).  I mostly end up with twice pressing buttons to make the player respond.  Really frustrating!

- I finally completed configuring .nfo files for my movies as required by yamj for the jukebox features (took me two days!)...ran yamj and the index file was generated.  I plugged the unit in my LED TV, accessed jukebox on the menu only to end up more frustrated.  When pressing "OK" on the message box asking if it's the first time I ran the new index file...the player hanged on me twice.  Third time and it rebooted.  Selecting "Cancel" on the fourth try finally showed the jukebox screen.  Not really sure though if it's really that way though. Jukebox looks fine the first time, but noticed a slight difference (movie bucketing/filters is on top) in the final result as compared from my trial results of around 12 movies only.  Looking at the details, Movie Title is truncated, commas are misplaced on the Actors field, Director field still shows XML tags before and after the Director name.  Rating is incorrect as well.  In fairness, I think that accuracy is 95% on movie posters selection - well probably due to the imdb links I painstakingly provided in the movie folders individually.  Series collections were treated correctly as well.

-  Samba is on but I can't seem to make it work.  I would probably need to read more as I feel that it's mostly my fault.

-  YouTube also does not work.  Error messages when playing video files.  Have not tried the other apps.  Don't really need it anyway.

To sum up, my experience with this brand isn't really that good considering that this was my first NMT.  I'd probably rate it at 4 on the scale of 1 - 10 where 10 is the highest.

What I'm doing now?  I'm seriously back reading the Playon HD forums and other NMT forums trying to possibly alleviate my situation.  Sad as I found out a lot have the same complaints as well.

I'm now considering the mede8er firmware - which I read in the forums (yes even AC Ryan Official forums) will work and may make user experience better (plus that wonderful Movie Wall).

The hardware is great, no question about it.  But user experience always as always makes a big difference really.

Note to myself - I should have gotten the HD2 or that egr...grrrr talaga! LOL! ;D ;D

It just occurred to me - should I downgrade the firmware to the old (and ugly) version?

Thanks for reading.  Let me know your thoughts people.

You should have got the AC Ryan Play On HD2, it has a much faster processor and everything runs smoother.

I know right?  I was eyeing that originally.  Charge to experience na lang. Haiyssstt!

Although despite its software flaws...hardware is rock solid.  Remove the faulty software in the equation and you got a one hell of an entertainment workhorse.

Further reading suggests that its the SDK tools from Realtek chipset actually which is at fault, and not the AC Ryan Development team.  Pero bat kasi ipinilit pa ung implementation ng GUI 2.0 to an almost uncapable processor set e. Oh well.

Anyways, I know na next time what to get...which I feel is gona be soon. :)

Thank you Sir for your reply.  I brought it back to the shop where I bought it (electronics boutique)  they accepted it for repair for a cost (out of warranty),  3 weeks assessment period includes shipping time to manufacturer daw.    Hopefully hindi mahal ang singilin sa akin.
