Title: GMA7's Captain Barbell

teaser shows this one is a SMALLVILLE rip-off.  What a shame for GMA7!!!

So true! I'm not familiar with Captain Barbel lore, but is there actually a Barbanium and Askobar in the comics? FYI, according to GMA, Barbanium is an indestructible metal where Captain Barbel gets his powers, and Askobar, short for Asido-Kontra-Barbanium, is like Kryptonite to Superman. So funny!

They're also boasting of that Hollywood guy who made the CB costume. GMA saya it's the same guy who did costumes in Batman and Robin. So is he the one responsible for Batman's nipples?  ;D

very disappointing ang CB! it's a mix-mash of Smallville, Superman, The Incredibles, & style wise, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow! mars ravelo must be squirming in his grave now!

He he, meron palang superhero na kumander bawang, it sounds like a brand of cornick  ;D.

From the teasers, it seems that he already had super powers even as boy, I thought he only becomes powerful after yelling "Captain Barbell"!

And about dun sa pinagyayabang na costume. Forget it.

The network i think and the rest of the cast should stop being too and over ecstatic about this CB, calling it as "the best, excellently done, ginastusan o pinaghirapan" because its really very embarassing. If this is already excellent or the best for these people, maybe their standard is really that dismal low. Wala talaga tayong improvement  ::)

Puro hype lang kasi ang GMA lalo na if it comes to their ratings.. Would you believe na ang rating ng I Luv NY ay 38% then ang PBBTE only had 28% or 29%??  :-\

Baka sabihin naman nila na naka 70% naman ang rating ng CB niyan!  :o

The costumes are so tacky, sayang yung dollars nila. Paolo looks like a mascot, Snooky's make up is horrible, the story line is a hodge-podge of foreign super hero shows/movies. Time is a prime commodity and i wasted 45 minutes of my life watching this crappy show.   To think that I'm a kapuso.

I'm not an expert on Captain Barbell, pero is this the storyline ni Mars Ravelo? Doesn't he lift his barbell or something..to change into CB??

My 11 year old cousin caught up faster...he opted to watch animax after just watching the first 10 minutes of the show.

The only positive thing i can say about the show is that they have one catchy theme song. I heard 3 different kids singing that song today.  I learned about how the episode ended from 1 of these kids. Mukhang enjoy naman sila.

As for myself... something new i learned yesterday. Dont watch CB ever again.

The Captain Barbell movie before starring Herbert Bautista (It think or was it Dolphy?) and Edu Manzano as Captain Barbell is truer to the Mars Ravelo version... I know this because I read the Captain Barbell series in pinoy komiks before when I was a kid na hinihiram ko from our maids... The name character of Herbert's character just escapes me now, I think it's Enteng...

I don't know what the storyline is in the GMA version but in the komiks and movie version, Enteng is a poor and oppressed fellow who is given the magical barbell by someone he helps who turned out to be an engkanta or something... Yes, he needs to lift the barbell and shout "CAPTAIN BARBELL!" for him to turn into the superhero...

Now, kung iniba ng GMA ang storyline at ginawa nilang alien si CB ala Superman, then they just committed a great travesty of Philippine komiks lore... Parang ginawa mo ring alien si Darna... sad. Sana hindi na nila iniba pa because the original really appealed to the masses... Mars Ravelo may indeed be turning in his grave...  :P :P

like watching a very poor smallville rip-off.  watched last night for about 5 mins.  where  the f*** is the barbell?   ??? ??? ???  does the kid suppose to lift a barbell first before he can be a superhero?  :P :P :P  i think they should change the title to "superboy".

Si Dolphy yun  Captain Barbell ang naalala ko nung maliit pa kami..
Si Herbert naman at edu nung 80's. Ang alam ko "comedy" ang dating pag "captain barbell".
In fact me kalaban pa siyang giant "kapre" sa pagkakaalam ko.
Ginaya nila ang storyline sa "Superman" at "Smallville" tv series. in other words, minodify ang ginayang
istorya n, nothing original.t
In the new GMA series,Hindi nagaling sa ibang planeta si Captain Barbell kundi sa ibang
panahon meaning "future" na nagtime-travel pabalik para makatakas ang anak. Ala "Terminator".
He, he, he, mukhang mali ang sukat nung costume ni CB, nagmukhang maliit ang ulo
in proportion sa katawan. Parang ulo na kinabit sa katawan at parang istatwa. hE, He.....
Dapat isoli sa hollywood para maretoke o may refund.. Yun nasa mukha na helmet ni
Paolo bediones , pag nakaclose-up lumabas yun styro-foam. sa pisngi. At hindi na kapre o mananaggal kalaban dito. Medyo, sosing na mala-robocop and suot. What about yun retro na Mercedes na lumilipad na sakay ni Paolo , gaya naman yun idea sa "Fifth Element". :) ;D >:

That's precisely what GMA did with Darna -- turned her into an alien.

actually, don't we have the "mango comics" adaptation to blame for that?

i think their biggest mistake was hiring one actor to play enteng and captain barbell. i, personally, thought the "herbert-edu" was the truest (at least visually) adaptation made. hiring one actor to play both is just way too clark/kal-el for me.  :-\

i think the closest "american counterpart" captain barbell had is FC's captain marvel. i wouldn't surprised if that's where mars ravelo based his character from... marvel predates barbell by at least 20 years...  just look at the cape of the original art... down to the "high collar". in my opinion, that's where they should've gotten their ideas from.  ::)

SHAZAM!  ;)

I totally agree with your posts.  GMA-produced shows really suck and watching them is just a waste of time and electricity.

From their totally stupid storylines, dull actors, untalented singing contestants,  one dimensional talent search winners,  trying hard hosts, "laos" loveteams (jolina-marvin), former abs-cbn talents who never got to grow in GMA (Paolo Contis still playing high school tweetums roles and, again, marvin agustin shifting back to his loveteam with jolens "yuck") .... I really don't upderstand why this lame channel is number one in terms of overall ratings.

I bet this Captain Barbell Show will be marketed as the No. 1 Telefantasya once again by GMA in the weeks to come.   Does this depict our masa's "kababawan"?

to their actors' lame acting (if lame is an overstatement) down to their pop superstar show featuring inept  I really don't understand why people watch their shows.

I know this is OT just want to share this.

Ricracer there's a buzz going around in advertising and broadcasting community about how GMA manipulated the ratings.  According to the grapevine ABS-CBN discovered this being repeated in Cebu, fortunately it was discovered in Cebu in its early stages kaya napigilan, pero pataas na rin sana ang ratings for GMA Cebu.  Unfortunately it was already rampant in Mega Manila.

UNILAB even conducted it's own surveys and it turned out sa sariling research daw nila eh, nubmer 1 ang ABS-CBN in Mega Manila.  because of this developement, I heard that advertisers and other broadcasting companies demanded to AGB Nielsen to recalibrate their people meter not only in Cebu but in Mega Manila aswell.

Also heard that a lot of heads in AGB Nielsen research company roled because of the scandal.  Yes marami naki-conspired na taga AGB Nielsen daw, this incident is being kept under wraps by AGB and Maria Ressa stopped the Correspondents episode tackling the issue from airing.

Ever wondered why ABS-CBN's program like PBB is being talked all over town pero talo pa rin sa ratings, this might be the answer.

 ;D

The storyline of the fantaserye version was really different from the comics version. Ang alam ko... Patpatin at lampa si Enteng sa comics version. Pero napanood ko kanina... Ermitanyo naman ang dating niya... People are disgusted on him. You can really see their difference. Richard Gutierez's body is well built while in the 1986 movie version na napanood ko, Herbert Bautista was skinny.

Di magkatugma ang mga rivival ng GMA sa mga comic characters na ginagawa nilang tv series. Like Darna, ang pagkakaalam ko, Ding was a child and forever will be a small child upto the 100th movie version of Darna. Pero bakit sa series, Ding was already at his adolescent stage.

Kaya I was never really hooked with GMA7's TV Shows lately. Very impossible. A lot of rip offs.  :o :( >:( :-[ :-\ :'( :o

Title: Re: GMA7's Captain Barbell

Kaya lang naman kumita ang Darna dahil in-exploit nila si Angel Locsin.   I used to work with factory workers and ride with them in the company shuttle...pag uwian time its DARNA-watching time at the bus' TV set.   They can't help but drool over Darna's big baloons that almost pop out at her every kick and punch she makes.  Kapag si Narda na siya,  balik ulit sa tulog ang mga kolokoys.

I read in an article (Mla Bulletin) that GMA spent 50 million pesos as budget for this Captain Barbell show.   It may well be their biggest flop.

Kaya lang mababa ang ratings ng Ch 2 dahil maraming nagalit sa kanila na mga FPJ(may he rest in peace)- at Erap fanatics.   Kaya ayaw panoorin ng masa ang ch 2.

Captain Barbell Real Name: Enteng
Identity/Class: Human transformed by magic

Occupation: School boy

Affiliations: Darna, Lastikman

Enemies: Lagablab; Freezy; Dagampatay; Lobo

Known Relatives: Belen (mother); Arnaldo (Lagablab, possible father)

Aliases: Kaptain Barbell; Teng-Teng (nickname)

Base of Operations: The Philippines

First Appearance: Pinoy Komiks #5 (1963)

Powers/Abilities: Superhuman strength and resistance to damage. He is also able to fly.

History: Captain Barbell is a young boy able to transform into a incredibly strong super hero when he lifts a magical golden barbell that was given to him by a strange hermit.

Comments: Created by Mars Ravelo, who also created Darna.

Captain Barbell appears to have debuted in comics format - certainly the first appearances I am aware of were in Pinoy Komiks Magasin in 1963.

He also appeared in Kampeon Komiks (Champion Comics).

He notes "The original Captain Barbell design had him shirtless because

a) During the more whimsical comics age in the Philippines of 1963, Mars Ravelo based the good Captain's look on circus strongmen, but with the addition of a mask.

b) Since the original Enteng's look (right) was a really super-skinny guy in a tank top (emphasizing his bony features), it was decided that Captain Barbell's "Shirtless Circus Strongman look" could provide a much more dramatic contrast to his mortal persona."

He further notes "The movie versions of Captain Barbell had to be redesigned from the comic's original because they're not as muscle bound as the comics version and were not body builders but actors. That's why they have the yellow top and now carry the "CB" symbol on their chest as opposed to the belt buckle logo-and-shirtless-look of 1963."

In fact, Captain Barbell has made several excursions onto the big screen, with Bob Soler apparently being the first to play the part. Then, according to 'Bembot' "There was a movie about Barbell starred by Dolphy in the early sixties in black and white. His alter ego was called Ting-ting because he was so thin. Ting-ting is the rib of a coconut leaf which is used to make brooms (walis ting-ting)."

In 1986 Edu Manzano played the title character in Captain Barbell, made by Viva Films. It was notable because it was the only movie that showed a crossover team-up between Captain Barbel and Darna

At least until the movie was remade in 2003. This time round Bong Revilla played the title character, making him the first actor to have played both Barbell and Panday.

Dan Ramon P. Geromo mentions that "In (this) Captain Barbell movie, the alter-ego of Capt. Barbell is named Enteng (played by Ogie Alcasid). The villains' names are Lagablab (played by Albert Martinez) and Freezy (Rufa Mae Quinto)."

This version of the character adds some layers to his origin: Raffy notes In the film, Captain Barbell's psychic projection tells his host, Enteng, that the barbell's metal is forged from a fragment of a magic rock that fell to the earth from space.

During times of great upheavals, nature finds a way to expel the magic rock to restore the balance between good and evil and seeks out a host to wield its great power and champion its cause. (There seems to be a possibility that this power source may be the same as Darna's and Lastikman's, both of whom's origins also involved magic "falling stars"). The champions it chooses are usually those those who have been victims of society's evils, the disenfranchised, and the meek ones. This is why the power found four social outcast individuals to wield its abilities. But there is a condition- the wielder must only use the power for unselfish purposes and the good of humanity. The abuse of this power holds dire consequences. Unfortunately, when the rock first hit the Earth and got absorbed into the ground, fragments of the rock broke off and in the wrong hands could be very destructive. This is exactly what happened when (in addition to Enteng) extra fragments homed in on the beings that eventually became "Lagablab" , "Freezy", and "Dagampatay".

This movie is made even more historical because Captain Barbell was not the only hero seen in the movie - Raffy informed me "PJ Malonzo played Lastikman as he guests in the Captain Barbell Movie starring Bong Revilla along with Regine Velasquez as Darna." So for the first time, three of Mars Ravelo's most famous creations were seen on screen together.

from wikipedia:

Captain Barbell is an upcoming 2006 drama fantasy action telefantasya based on the Mars Ravelo's fictional character of the same name that will airs on Philippine television on GMA Network. It will star Richard Gutierrez as Captain Barbell and Richard Gomez as the main villain.

Plot overview
In its other incarnations, the story of Captain Barbell begins with a skinny boy named Tengteng who has a good heart. A strange hermit rewarded him a magical golden barbell. Tengteng lifts the barbell and shouts "Captain Barbell" which transforms him into an incredibly strong superhero.

However, due to restrictions in licensing, the producers have developed a new back-story for the origins of his power. Borrowing heavily from Superman and Terminator, he is placed in a future on the last days of earth. He is sent back to the past in the year 1992 and drops to a location in the Philippines on a flaming ball which is his spaceship. His barbell though is sent back to the year 2006. The scenes of his childhood days are copied from Smallville (TV series) and show him lifting tractors and logs which is evident of a rip-off. Not only scenes from Smallville were copied but also from Spawn (film) in which when he would summon his cape, it is obvious of CG-generated effects and the hairstyle is exactly borrowed from Christopher Reeves Clark Kent character.

hmmm.... restrictions in licensing pala...  :P :P

yup, it's so disappointing
with what they've done with the CB storyline.  >:(

if they had a problem with "liscencing"
they could have gathered a bunch of new writers to create a new story line
(and not a "cut and paste" series)

OR

if GMA wanted to produce a pinoy superhero teleserye,
it would have been better if they got the rights of "STONE".

With the influx of negative comments on GMA's Captain Barbell, who'd ever thought that it would be the No. 1 Primetime show in Philippine Television.

Yes, you heard me right.  Just saw a print ad at Manila Bulletin today claiming that CB lorded it over network ratings with a 35% audience share for the primetime segment to be the most watched primetime show on TV.  And would you believe that the TOP 10 Primetime shows were all from GMA 7?    So it appears that walang nanonood ng PBB?

Magkano kaya ang bayad GMA sa AGB?   Pera pera lang yan talaga.  Go Captain Barbell!!!

kahit ang pangit ng story line nya.

especially ngayong ala ng pbb, siguradong captured market ng cb ang mga bata.

ang mga bata would watch a show with super heroes & super villains over a drama anytime.
as long as nanonood ang mga bata, magbabantay ang mga nanay.

Read a letter in the entertainment section of the Inquirer, just can't remember if it was June 2 or June 4 issue. A viewer complained about the story of CB and actually said it was a rip-off of Smallville.

it was placed in the lower left hand corner of the right page.. near the fold.
