hey guys,

got myself a sansui au-7700 amp. they were made before the '07' series (e.g. au507, 907, etc.). this was made when japan and international market shared the same models. got this info from the sansui website.

for an amp almost 30 years old, the sound quality really amazes me. the harshness common to some modern day solid-state amp is absent (to my ears).

« Reply #331 on: Jan 05, 2004 at 03:22 PM »
speaker/amp matching matters...

during the holidays, me and my friend swapped our surplus Onkyo Integras to hear how they perform with our speakers.  mine is A-819RS and his is A-817XX... mine is supposed to be higher wattage but his is a newer model by 2yrs... he wanted to test my integra with his Wharfedale Diamond 8.1 coz he feels there's something missing in his speaker's tweeter... true enough, my 819RS was able to give more sparkle in the treble which made it more enjoyable when watching movies.

on to his 817XX matched with my Mordaunts, i was surprised that his onkyo was more musical than mine.  hmmm... maybe we should swap our amps you think??  the 819RS was more detailed in the treble, but the 817XX had more body without giving away the details, which makes it sound very similar to my sansui alpha.  plus it had a neat contrabass feature in the preamp section that allows you to control how soft or how hard you want your bass.

how can 2 amps coming from the same product line sound so different?  i thought mine was a bit bright, and he thought his was a bit dull.  we swapped and kaboom, it was just right!  i also tested his 817XX with the Monitor B2 and it was a great match.

Guys,

Going back to the pictures of the big Kenwood speakers, didn't you notice one thing?

Try to see the arrangement of the mid and the tweeter, di ba kung baga sa sapatos parehong kaliwa o parehong kanan?

I had a similar big Kenwood speaker before (although mukhang mas low end yung sa akin). I had problems with imaging because of the driver placement on the front of the cabinet. All along akala ko parehong left (or right) yung nabili ko yun pala talagang ganon ang Kenwood!

amp shootout ba 'ka nyo?  game ako dyan...

kaso tinext ko sa fren ko wag na niya pakawalan yun onkyo niya dahil maganda ang tunog sa MS at MA... ayan pinakinggan tuloy... ingay ko kasi eh hehe.  hanap na lang kaya ako nun modelo na yun... hmmm actually di ko pa naman kailangan dahil nandyan naman si sansui pero na-impress lang ako dun sa onkyo niya than my own onkyo, w/c is a very good amp in its own right, esp. matched with the AE speakers.

bro ganun din yung nakuha kong surplus kenwood (medyo low end din).  parehong kaliwa!!  as a result, medyo off by 4 inches to the left yung position ng tweeters kaya i had to adjust the speaker position by 2 inches to the right.  slight compromise lang between sound & aesthetics, but i might use it outdoors na lang pang rugged use.

Sirs,

Can anyone provide information of the Kenwood KL-888X, I had an officemate who have these speakers and gusto ko sanang awitan kasi di na daw nila ginagamit. She can't provide me with a picture because it is in the province. According to her, it looks the same as the pictures above but can't tell the exact difference and she says it is a 5 way speaker system?

Akyat,

No problem, I can bring back the amp back possibly this weekend so the others can check it out.

Sirs,

I would like to share my experience with this 817 amp at the pier when I saw one paired with a rotel 7 band per channel equalizer and onkyo speakers (those ref sized described by akyat), I was amazed on what this amp can deliver paired with the rotel, from that time on I know that this amp is a winner.

My problem is that on my wharf, the highs are somewhat laidback so I wanted to resort to an equalizer to improved the performance, unfortunately I do not have money at that time to spend for the equa which cost higher than the amp itself at 4.5K. When we returned nabili na daw the whole sets.

When I checked with 819 it is very good for HT because the Highs and Bass are there, but somewhat muffled mids.  Hence I followed the advise of akyat to keep the amp because it is very good for audio setup, what lacks on this amp is the main-in so there is no way we can use other pre-amps.

bro, links here:

click the 3 follow-up replies re: kl-777

search kl-333 on this page - owner's impressions

i used to own the the LS-11ES (below) which i sold to a friend w/c i regret because i missed their bass slam.

then several weeks ago i saw a bigger version at the pier selling for 6k... i thought it was expensive for a surplus unit, but when i checked yahoo auctions and found that it was selling for 60,000yen i decided to give it a try.... the midrange metal done seemed very similar to the one used in the yamaha ns-1000x.  unfortunately it was gone when i went back.

boss akyat u got a pm ;D

balak mo ba kunin pre?  laki ng woofer nyan ah, de-kinse yata.

guys,

what can you say about Kenwood's KA-v8500 - Integrated AV surround amplifier? , ok ba to - to be paired with LS-V220 and CRS-177 (Kenwood speakers)?, medyo low budget lang ako para sa amp/ receiver eh kaya surplus muna and future addition ko na lang yung sub.

Please check this link (KA-V8500):
http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e32597446

btw, me nakita rin nga pala ako sa Raon na surplus din naKenwood KA-v7700 ata yun if I 'm not mistaken. Selling at 7k.

Am not familiar with that model of kenwood, but surplus equipment really wouldn't rely anynore on the brand but on the integrity of the vendor.  With how they are handled at the pier, i wouldn't be surprised if many jap surplus have been repaired using inferior replacement parts to make them work.  An amp costing 7T today when it used to cost 30T almost 10 years ago at pre 1997 exchange rates may be a good buy but I really can't expect it to work like new as orginally advertised.  But just like you i am tempted to get one if only to know that I now own a unit I used to dream about.   ;D  Ofcourse it should also work.

punk_kid, may sariling thread ang mga cd player sa pier.

just click this link:
Surplus CD players thread

kailangan lang ng ingat pre, since mayroon mechanical moving parts yan na 10-15yrs old... some old models have a lock at the bottom, you must make sure it is locked before you transport it, otherwise the mechanism may become misaligned and it will have difficulty reading CD's.

with 59 transistors, 22 FETs, 24 ICs, and 69 diodes on the Accuphase - that would be so many parts you have to worry about breaking down.

IMHO, I'd go for the EL34...

-minimalist/purist (circuitry and aesthetics)
-easier to repair
-not sure but i think it's warm sounding as against the accuphase
-pero di ba despite it being a 60watter mapili pa rin sa speakers yan?...

yukon, with all due respect, hindi minimalist at lalong hindi purist yang AMX model na yan. it is actually complicated.

ooppss, i was actually comparing it to the ss amp A_B mentioned... minimalist na sya if we were to compare it to Accuphase diba?

btw, IMHO ulit, i don't think it should pass pala as a purist amp.

thanks for your inputs mga sir!  hmmm baka magmistulang ss vs tube yata, di naman sinasadya hehe its a real decision to be made... been targetting the accuphase since december so i could consolidate all my ss amps into this one representative, and dispose of all the others... that is, if its better than all the others.

and then i heard a tube amp that could be used in both audio and HT... haaaay, life would be so simple if there was only 1 amp... if i dispose all of my beloved amps i would have enough dough to go ask mr. andrew to build monoblocs for me hmmmm.  life is simple, no more changing cables, no more shorted amp, no more busted tweeter.

or maybe better still, have enough patience to acquire both and do an amp shootout... hmmmm it would be easy to sell the accuphase in case i find the tube amp more to my liking... but would it be just as easy to sell the tube amp in case the accuphase wins? hmmmm.

haven't heard the hafler yet.

considering the TB2A3's reputation - - matched with the tono (and to make it a little more confusing/frustrating for you, sama mo na yong 94dB na Brines Foxtex sa left and right nyan)... ay kagaling talaga nyang combo nyan...

Ice, kelan ko kaya maririnig yang hafler na amp?...  ;D
