Title: Type N Wireless Router
Post by: Clondalkin on Sep 04, 2009 at 08:35 PM
Bros. pahingi naman ng feedback and comments.

Anyone using D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router in their home?  No. 1 kase sa Amazon and Ive got to set-up a network in Pasig residence next month.

I think yung Belkin N1 Wireless Router ang popular sa Philippines but any advise would be highly appreciated.

Thanks a million!!!

i've heard mostly good feedbacks regarding the dir-655, the belkin too though i believe it's a bit pricier. i'd take the dlink over the crappy products linksys puts out nowadays.

you could also check out tplink. it's cheap but it does the job.

Thanks for the advise Moejun!

Yeah the Belkin N1 is quite reliable so far at my sister's place (and pretty good range too) - about $15 higher than the DIR-655.

What are you using by the way?

i've been using an old linksys wrt54gs (supposedly with speedbooster) for the past 3 years, non-stop, 24/7 literally speaking hehe. the only rest it gets is when there are power outages. i guess i'm just lucky. a whole batch of wrt54gs had connection problems.

i was on the verge of getting another router though, a few months ago, and it was a toss up between the dir-655 and the belkin N-1. belkin gets the nod when it comes to aesthetics but you've got to give credit to dlink for churning out such a performer in the 655.

Oh yeah, you are the 24/7 guy right?   :)   You've got youself some very robust hard drives and reliable router   ;)

So between the DIR-655 and the Belkin N1,  I guess I would just choose whichever looks nicer for the Wife.   Thanks ulit Bro!

glad to be of assistance sir! the belkin is one sexy beast, that's for sure!

i just remembered that it's almost time for my quarterly pc cleaning hehe. i can see a lot of dust bunnies inside my pc, the disadvantage of having acrylic side panels hehe.

Uy ayos Ditoy.   Meron technical consultant ang Mrs. ko in case mapakamot ulo nya sa pag-set-up ng DIR-655.    ;D  Medyo decided na sa DIR-655   :)

Baka you would consider there warranties. Dlink 1year lang ata while Belkin gives out lifetime warranty.

So far ok experience ko with D-Link, Cisco and Buffalo (mas affordable ata sila lahat kesa belkin). Yung lumang Linksys ko lang ang daming problem aheheh.

maganda lang yung look ng belkin but i think more reliable yung dlink. I use Dlink wirelessG routers. Sometimes lang hirap mag connect ng DHCP nila.

If you can get your hands on a router named Draytek (commercial grade lang nga and quite pricey) then do so.

Actually, I prefer the profile of the DIR-655 because it looks like a white version of the Buffalo Infiniti N that Im using in Tokyo (and very similar features as well) while Belkin is kinda fat.   Wala lang akong makitang magandang Buffalo sa Amazon US but I can definitely vouch sa reliability and stability ng Buffalo Infiniti (based on the level of data I've been sharing online for the past 2 years, and the number of web-capable gadgets simultaneously connected to it at the moment) .

congrats sir! the usb feature is also cool. i'm sure you're gonna test it in japan before you bring it here. if you have time, please give some feedback. also, i'm curious regarding the usb feature.

Hindi eh, derecho sa Philippines lahat the PC related purchases this time dahil bibitbitin ng brother ko.  Although interested nga sana ako to verify the network speed.   My wife would try to install the stuff herself (or with someone else's assistance) kaya puro English version.  Sa Xmas ko pa makikita.  Yeah, the USB feature sounds convenient.  Hope it actually works well on the network.   Otherwise, as long as maganda ang range ng signal and the PLDT DSL has enough juice to share between 2 PCs (para di magsabunutan ang asawa ko't dalagita sa net), it should be fine.  :)

I have the DIR-655 as a replacement for my old trusty WRT54G that finally called it quits after years of trusty service. The improved range of the DIR-655 is immediately apparent as my downstairs living room which is right at the hairy edge of the WRT54G's range now has a strong and steady signal with the DIR-655. I don't have any N clients yet but I got it for the gigabit connection for my DNS-323 and desktop.

broadband speed is dependent on ISP, not on router. anyway, back to the topic please.

That's actually very good.   Your wrt54gs still works within your requirements so no need to change.

The main reason Im getting the N for Manila use is the signal range.   Isang bilihan lang naman (dapat) ang router for years, so might as well make sure it covers my house pretty well.  Yeah PLDTs bandwidth is another matter.

Meron siguro sa Manila na instead of using router ay may multiple PLDT lines for independent internet subscription  for every PC?    Doble-doble gastos.

Yeah, gigabit LAN would be really nice - kung mahilig kang mag-transfer and share ng files within your network.

wow. multiple accounts under  a single roof. i guess that would be unnecessary since not everyone torrents all the time, most just use it for twitting and facebook or chatting. but yeah, that would be nice too.

Hi Tony.  Have you tested the max range (in ft or meters)?  The wi-fi signal of the Buffalo Infiniti Im using in Tokyo could effectively reach about 50 meters - buti nalang locked.

i'm also curious regarding this. what's the range when used in conjunction with a wifi G device? when used with an N device?

no chance yet bro... so far signal strenght is good than my G access points before... the only catch is that it doesn't penetrate the wall of my home theater space that well in the ground floor... access point is in the 2nd floor far end corner room...

Next question Bros, how's you internet package coping with your multi-PC environment?

I have the 999 PLDT package in Pasig and private DL sites easily max out the available bandwidth.  So whenever my daughter "sequesters" the PC, she pauses all ongoing DLs by the wife para she can enjoy what she does on the internet.

The wife's laptop is arriving soon and a home network would be set-up, so I wonder if it's worth upgrading to the 2mbps plan, or other options available.

Thanks!

So far it's okay... my household has 3 laptops and 2 desktops running simultaneously linked to the internet via 2 DLINK access points and other network devices such as NMT, PS3, XBOX360 are connected so far without problem... however, I've stopped doing bittorent downloads so that would be a factor.

I think Plan999 is okay... unfortunately for me I am still stuck with the older DSL plans from PLDT and pay double for that amount...

If your daughter has a knack of shutting off your downloads, and you have 2 pldt lines, might be a good idea getting plan 990 for 1 line and 999 for another.  I'm not sure how well the 990 is, but its a minimal addition to your landline subscription.  Then you can use the faster connection for your purposes including downloads.

I'm also using Buffalo Infiniti-N for 2 years already 24/7. Bought it from Commdap at P3400. Very good performer for the price.

I saw a newer version than mine at Octagon selling for P3k. Maybe it would be cheaper from other computer shops.
