My Sony CD player conked out and it looks like there's no way to repair it. As a temporary fix until I can save up for a new CD player I'm planning on getting a DVD player for my system to achieve two goals -- DVD playback for my HT system and a good enough audio quality when playing audio CDs. Of course, the more affordable, the better. Additional features like AVI playback and upscaling features would also be most welcome.
Any recommendations on a brand and model?

Pioneer 610, very decent CD player, it uses high quality DAC for 6ch. Use the front L/R channel for cd audio and the sound diff is night and day.
-
How much does it cost?

Cambridge Audio DV89 / DV99. Works great as an upscaling DVD player, while producing great audio output with CDDA, SACD and DVD-A. Sells for 9k ata yung DV89. Ewan ko kung bumaba na.
There is also a higher model, yung Azur 540D. Higher build quality than yung DV89/DV99 and costs a bit more. It drops support for SACDs and DVD-As however.
Marantz also has a wide line of DVD players that also sound great when playing CDs. I think the most recent model is the DV4003, but there are still a lot of older models in the market.

What's the price range for these Marantz's sir Stagea?
-
Nine thousand's too rich for me. :) 5k and downwards is my ideal price range. Although the 610 looks tempting. :)

Someone is selling a Harman/Kardon DVD21 in the marketplace for 3.5K
Its a nice player featuring the National Semiconductor 'Mediamatics' NDV8603 DVD on a Chip, Wolfson Microelectronics' WM8706 High Performance Stereo DACs.
I used to own one, except mine died after 8 years of fruitful operation (2002-2010) hence I replaced it with a Pioneer DV595K in 2009 when it showed its age.
When my Pioneer ran out of warranty, I opened it up and am disappointed with the internals - lets just say you're better off with the raon/quiapo DVD players (MediaTek 1389FE DVD on a Chip IC with integrated DAC) because that's what's exactly inside the thing. Probably the only difference is the software/firmware and the brand.
No wonder the Pioneer DVD player sounded different from the H/K when playing plain CDs.
Discrete DAC ICs will always trump over integrated DACs in DVD in a chip ICs anytime.

Indeed. However, the DAC of the Pioneer 6XX series is another story.

Its a modified Pioneer DV-610AV with grounded copper heatsinks at several places (inclusive on the DVD on a Chip IC (at this point i dont know the model number) , shielding at critical points, and a copper baseplate on the transport

The Pioneer DV6XX series is using Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit DACs

ok, now you're talking. ;D
found the pics of a 'stock' Pioneer DV-610AV from this site

using a MediaTek 1389EXE DVD on a Chip, but im kinda assuming the B-B DACs are too small to be recognized in the pics (they're located near the MT1389EXE in a bunch of small SMT ICs surrounded by caps)

Pioneer DVD player ;D
