Title: busted tubes?
Post by: Zitr0 on Sep 21, 2010 at 04:21 AM
hello masters, tatanung ko lang po on how do we go about knowing if there is a busted tube on a device? is it specifically noted as "no sound coming out from the device?" Or pwede rin po ba na umiilaw parin sya pero busted na sya in a sense na di na nya nabibigay ang so called tube sound sa particular item?

Master Ric,

The valves wear with use. Outright failure isn't that common naman ata, so the sound just deteriorates slowly as the tube ages in use.

Afaik, power tubes naman and driver tubes ang kailangan madalas palitan.

Antayin natin ang response ng mga tube masters. :)

when you start hear cracking or distorted sounds along with the music.
Try to replace it and if its gone then the replaced one might be  busted.

Or bring your tubes to Watson in Sta. Cruz Mla and have them tested to know which are busted.  ;D

Salamat master Ivan, check ko rin sa ibang setup at baka ganun lang talaga sa setup ko, halos walang diff kasi yung tube out sa SS out nya eh, very minimal na minsan parang wala talaga pagkakaiba... kaya napapatanung ako...

rare yung tube failure by heater getting open, unless napasukan ng napakataas na voltahe......

failure mode nya kadalasan is caused by transconductance getting way way lower than initial conditions, this is brought about by the depletion of the cathode emmisions.....

another mode of failure is "getter" being used up or exhausted..

the quickest way for a tube to fail is when you drop it and the glass gets shattered.... ;D

I hope we're talking of the same preamp. Sometimes, kaya walang pinagkaiba, the amplifier is not transparent or revealing enough to pass on the characteristics of the preamp or source sa speakers. Or too much amplifier coloration. Same scenario happened to me two months ago. then after lots of A/B testing, baklas kabit, i found the culprit.  ;D

yup master nelson, same item... someone also told me na baka pareho lang ng point of neutrality ung equipments ko ( based on reviews kasi, pareho silang "very neutral" ) tipong what comes in daw simply comes out... so diff. in sound character will not really be noticeable since same lang sila ng sound charater... baka daw nagiging clinical or sterile lang yung tunog for me kaya ganun yung description ko...

Could be pero there really should be an at least slight change because we're talking s/s & tube preouts here. Whatever characteristic of either preouts should be amplified. Hence, dapat slightly noticable talaga. you can bring it over my place for comparison.

yup master, meron naman nagbago, di lang ung ineexpect ko, or di lang sya ganun ka dramatic... hehehe!

adding it made a cleaner background making subtle details more prominent, more defined bass and smoother mids, di lang ung expected ko na warmer, more lush mids and high from a tube setup na alam ko... ewan, dont know if im expectin to much or ewan lang talaga... ;D

gulo ko...

May nirecommend sa akin na pamalit tubes for that preamp. Your preamp tubes is the same ata with the panasonic 2 DIN tube preamp HU. I'll text you his number. He also wants to audition that preamp. You can bring the preamp and try tube rolling.
