Title: LG PK550 50" Plasma TV
Post by: natosan on Oct 04, 2010 at 05:19 PM
Anyone owns this baby? Saw one at SM Makati around 63K lang. That's very cheap considering 50" and 1080p na sya. Very thin and slick pa yun outline ng screen nya. wasn't able to do a side by side comparison vs panasonic but the price is very enticing. difference of 20K or something against the pana. From the demo display it looked very sexy and good PQ naman.

I have been looking for this model, as well...

Sir Vic, kelan po kayo magkakaroon nito?

may wattmeter test napo ba nito? hehe... para macheck lang po sana baka kasi electricity killer pala.. thanks

@AC

Tested unit earlier at SM cubao. Using the LG wattmeter it yielded readings of 300-415. Best guess would be 350 watts on average which, based on Meralco's Appliance Calculator, would increase your bill by 940 pesos monthly given eight hours of daily use.

Not too bad in my opinion but i honestly want the 60 inch one  ;D which i imagine would make me want to cry out for free electricity.

Got one last night. Its huge and quite heavier than a 42. Measured the actual viewable area & its exactly 50inches. Setting up is easy, since I've upgraded many times in past few yrs so I've got the setting up part down to an art. Also I keep the box, styros, everything in the packaging. Never know when the urge to upgrade will strike again.

An accurate review of pq wont be possible for now since its still in break in period & I set the brightness & contrast below 50%. But from the short tests I did at SM I could see that pq is very good. Read as much reviews I could find before buying this so I knew what to expect and look for possible problems e.g. dead pixels, buzz, lines across screen, etc. and so far none encountered.

How's the glare Wunder9?

Thanks.
Title: Re: LG PK550 50" Plasma TV
Post by: wunder9 on Oct 25, 2010 at 02:45 PM
@Clondalkin - The glass panel is reflective ala Pana C or X series. The trick is to position the tv & watch with no light source or window behind you reflecting off the panel. I can watch with the ceiling light on or during daytime & not notice glare.

Post by: wunder9 on Oct 30, 2010 at 10:56 PM
So far no image retention encountered even when watching with black bars or station logos. Still burning in this tv with color slides and contrast/brightness settings at low levels. 50 inch size is really great. Details in movies I never even notice with the 42 are now visible.

@wunder9 - sir diba ikaw yung nasiraan ng panasonic lcd with theatreworks? Whatrever happened to your unit?
Title: Re: LG PK550 50" Plasma TV
Post by: wunder9 on Oct 31, 2010 at 12:21 AM
@roy128 - I don't think plasmas have backlight bleeding. LCD's & LED have that.

@pekspert - Ya the audio board of my Pana 42LZ80 gave out. Panasonic replaced the board and TW shouldered the cost. It was good as new after that and didn't encounter any more problems. Kudos to Sir Jeff.

Eventually it was time to upsize/upgrade to a 50 so I had to sell the 42. My original candidates for 50 were Pana 50C or 50X as they were within budget. Unfortunately they are 720p only and I was unsatisfied when I saw them in action. 50V was out of my league. Then this LG 50PK550 showed up at the right time & right price. The reviews at AVSforums are more than a hundred pages long and the consensus is its a great tv.

I read the link re color shift. Dunno what to make of it. The thread at avsforums is 128 pages long already and I don't recall any mention of color shift being an issue. Personally I can't comment coz I'm still breaking in my set & haven't had it calibrated.

Great TV... i have one and im very happy with it. but i want to know the exact power consumption for these tv. its not in the manuals eh. Also is it really adviseble to get a wattage regulator? which one is better railley or servo motor type? If i used a UPS will it help protect my tv from electricity fluctuations? thanks

Side by side with the panny 42x20 ( too bad both got component inputs only at the store ), this Lg has sharper and more detailed image, but the brighter and better whites goes to the panny. We did adjust the settings to no avail to remedy the Lg's bluish less bright screen. Next time, I will request the Lg guy to use HDMI source for both tvs and see if it's still the same. Overall this Lg tv is great ( considering its low price for a 50 inch Full hd plasma ).

I saw this at SM Marikina.  It's a gorgeous TV.

Comparing this LG plasma with the Panny plasma on the SM showroom floor, the picture on the LG demo looked much, much better than the crap demo by Panny.

LG is very aggressive these days.  Aggressive pricing, exclusive SM deal, top-notch after sales service.  It's easy to see why LG is doing very well nowadays.

Panny Philippines is a lazy company.  They wouldn't be selling as many plasmas if not for forums like pinoydvd.

This LG plasma is very under-rated here. A 50inch full hd plasma for the price of a Pana 42V. Since I cant avail of expert calibration I just used the settings posted by Big Brad in AVSforums after breaking in my set. The improvement in pq is astounding. My mom keeps asking if my tv is 3D. hehehe

Title: Re: LG PK550 50" Plasma TV
Post by: iAMhitek on Jan 13, 2011 at 09:01 AM
@ jerix

from the TV showroom settings and video material shown at SM, this is what I got using my Voltcraft Plus Logger 3500 (calibration verified against my lab instruments):

VIVID, STANDARD and CINEMA Settings:  435 watts maximum
                                                              375 watts minimum
                                                              412 watts average

I find the power consumption readings for the different video settings/modes to be the same contrary to the normal plasma behavior of the Panasonic plasmas. Also, this model is more prone to IR. I may go back to the store any time this week to verify again why this is so and probably do an ENERGY reading for at least an hour.
Very strange LG plasma...........balak ko pa naman to have this TV because of its low price and LG's renowned after sales support.

Bought this TV last Dec. 31 at SM Makati and I'm about 50 hours na sa break-in using the 120v slides, HD movies and ps3/xbox gaming.

Nagbasa-basa din ako dun sa official PK550 thread sa AVS Forums http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1235720&highlight=ea+programming&page=152 , so far positive naman ang feedback sa plasma model na 'to.

The only concern which I discovered with this model e walang Expert Mode options sa Picture settings compared to other similar models outside the philippines. Meaning di ka pede mag tweak beyond the Basic and Advanced Picture settings... di mo ma access ang Expert Mode calibration. Tumawag na ako sa LG ph tech support at ang feedback e the firmware is different which they cannot change here kaya no choice.

Pero over-all, I'm happy with this tv, no noticeable input lag sa mga game consoles particularly sa Xbox although as per experience nun mga nasa AVS, you need to use a VGA cable for the xbox para mas fluid although I didn't notice anything using HDMI... HDMI cable is also ok for the PS3.

On HD movies, out-of –the-box, PQs are great, blacks are blacks and the colors are stunning already for my perception using only basic settings. I can't run on optimal settings kasi break-in period pa lang. Pero ang sabi sa AVS the more that I reach the desired 200 hrs break-in period e mas gaganda pa ang PQ which I believe is common for plasmas…. then I can calibrate this as desired.

IR's are common for now dahil bago pa pero if you enable the built-in orbiter and run the color-wash and white wash function after watching, the IR's does go away after a few minutes. Screen reflections will be a problem for some na meron direct background light facing the TV but if you can fix your lighting, this won’t be an issue.

Just an advice lang sa mga interesadong bumili nitong TV model na 'to... please bring a USB flash disk with a loaded v120.1 slides which you can download here at http://www.webapalooza.com/plasma/. Plug the flash disk at the left side of the tv then run each color slides. This will then help you identify right away if there are dead pixels off the box of the unit you are purchasing. I’m sure most of you are familiar with this method, just sharing to those who are not.

And if you have finally decided to buy this TV and once you get to set it up at home, you may use the same v120.1 slides to break-in your TV with the following settings…

1. Use one of the inputs preferably the component

2. Settings: Cinema (User) – to be used only for break-in only

Speed setting: Slow
Contrast: 100
Brightness: 50
Sharpness: 50
Color: 50
Tint: 0
Color Temp: 0

Gamma: Medium
Black level: Low

3. Any type of "enhancements" should be turned off.

I’ve learned that if you use these settings for the break-in, this will help the phosphorous mature much better.

Normal usage should be set to normal Cinema mode and always watch or play with the orbiter on, to avoid IRs.

I have saved countless of optimal settings but will only be applied once I graduate from the break-in period. I hope the other PK550 owners here will share their best Picture Mode settings so I can learn from them.

Again, I have learned these options after reading more than 150+ pages dun sa official PK550 thread sa avsforums.

I think this is my first post since I joined pinoydvd last Jan. 2, 2008. lol

Hope this helps.

I’m sure most of you are familiar with this method, just sharing to those who are not.

since this tv has a whitewash option, you can use this as your break in "image".  run it for 24 hours and your good to go.  this also ages the phosphor evenly, instead of watching videos zoomed like most people here do.  :)

btw you dont have to check for dead pixels as plasma tvs does not have that issue.  :D

Sorry because I was not able to read the information here about how to break-in a plasma because there were only a few pages here on the PK550. I didn't bother na po na hanapin sya dito sa pdvd.

What I did however was read through almost 150+ pages of information on the official PK550 thread on avsforum. Dun ko po natutunan ang advantage of using v120.1 slides as the break-in images so the TV has a chance to cycle through lots of various shades of color. I didn't know that you can use pala ang white wash feature e pede na.

As per my practice while breaking-in this tv, I don't watch contents with black bars so I don't have to zoom the images po. I do however play countless of hours using both xbox and ps3 consoles with the orbiter feature on. I then run for a few minutes the color wash feature after playing para mawala po ang mga IR's.

On the dead pixels, there were actually a few dead pixels with the initial 2 plasmas na nilabas nila sa akin from their stock room. As per my experience, the dead pixels that I saw were not as evident using the white wash and color wash features of the tv. The flash drive that I brought with the v120.1 slides ay malaki po ang naitulong sa akin para makita agad yun mga dead pixels at makabili ng defect-free panel.

If you would like to verify this, you can look for the LG salesman sa SM appliance makati named Ariel. He can help confirm that there are really indeed dead pixels on some of their LG plasma tvs. Ito rin po ay mababasa dito kung ikaw ay miyembro http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/search.php?searchid=16739612 summarized na po yan ng mga dead pixels experience nila with this TV.  ;)

Ojokik is right about these defective panels. I know Ariel of SM Makati and he is more than willing to assist his client for the very best service. Be warned that other models/brands of flat panels got some panel problems too (dead pixels, stuck sub pixels, rising black level on a plasma, accelerated loss of luminance level and white balance degradation on LED-LCD TVs, TOC bezel screen separating at the edge of the frame, and even fault in the video processor circuit), all observed at showroom displays.
When Gerome, the Panasonic guy of SM Makati was still there, together, we used to evaluate practically every model in the store. We witnessed all these defects from various brands.

just sharing bros..................

So this problem is not brand specific. you just have to check them one by one.

Tama po, this is not brand specific. Although there are units na ganitong modelo 50pk550 na meron dead pixel(s). You just have to be meticulous in choosing a unit when spending your investment.

Rising black levels is a Panasonic issue, not an LG issue.

What happens after the Panny black level rises?  Its black level will be slightly higher than an LG PK550, but still better than most TVs.

After 2 months of using the 50PK550R, I can say that this is an excellent unit and has superb performance especially when considering the wallet-friendly price. I did not do any special calibration other than turn the pixel orbiter ON and lower the contrast and brightness levels.

PQ is very sharp, blacks are really inky and the is no judder when the display scene pans. That had been by biggest complaint about my previous Sony 50". The glossy screen does not bother me at all since when the TV is on, the bright picture makes them almost unnoticeable. The glossy screen appears to add to the depth of the picture.

I tried turning the preset to Standard after 2 months but found it too bright.
Here are my settings:
Mode: Cinema
Contrast: 70
Brightness: 50
Sharpness: 45
Color:50
Tint: 0
Color Temp: C10
Advanced controls remain at their default settings

On rising black level of Plasma:

I thought so many wants the plasma because of its outstanding black level. what happens when the black level further rises?

The blacks don't get to be as good as when the unit is new. I think that this would affect panels that are run with low contrast/brightness levels more than those used more typically, as the panel wear is lesser on the former... yet the built-in compensation circuitry just depends on logged hours of panel use (not discriminating between actual types of use). This supposedly causes overcompensation, wherein the panel drive level gets further and further from ideal (too high) as time goes on.

I prefer a darker picture, and all 3 plasmas I have/had (from the mentioned affected brand) showed noticeable black level deterioration. At the moment, my bedroom TV (which has the darkest picture) looks more like a typical LCD in terms of black level. I've turned up the picture adjustments (it's now closer to a "properly calibrated" image) to prevent it from getting worse.

You can try the calibrated settings posted by Big Brad at avsforums & see if it works for you. I use them myself & the picture is stunning ;D Other PK550 users posted their settings too.

Since our version of he PK550 lacks the expert mode, we can only tweak as far as the basic picture settings will go: contrast, brightness, color, sharpness, tint, color temp & a few others. Other Asian & European owners of this TV have the same predicament as us anyway, so its not exclusive to PH.

Plasmatvbuyingguide's review & calibration settings have been disputed at avsforum.

That's weird!  Yung display unit sa Megamall shows the discounted price, and tags for the free items, and the 22LC330 was clearly posted on.  I suspect it's being given as a free item for all flat panels 50" or bigger.

I just called up SM Fairview Appliance Center to ask about the promo of LG specifically the PK550r. It was surprising to discover that their sales rep is not even aware of the large 50” plasma unit displayed in the entrance of the Appliance Center, sabi nya, “LED lang po ang mga display natin.” The PK550r is the biggest among all the various units displayed, so truly I cannot accept what he was saying.

The sales rep only knew about the other LG products but not the Plasma unit. So I instructed him to go and check the unit displayed in the entrance area of the appliance Center. The price P62, 999.00 attached to the TV is so big not to be noticed by anyone, especially by the sales rep of LG, or maybe any staff of the Appliance Center. The Sales Rep apologized when he returned to me, confiding that he is actually not the LG Rep. Siguro nga naka-break yong LG Sales Rep. However, I already asked the LG Rep about the promo last week when I passed by the appliance center. However, ne never mentioned to me about the FREE 22” LG TV.

Anyway I clarified about the promo offered by other SM Appliance Centers on the PK550 priced at 62,999.00 with FREE 22LG TV. He was I think holding the LG price list and after a while, he told me, that indeed the PK550 priced at P62, 999.00 comes with a FREE 22” TV.

So guys, this is for everyone’s info. The LGpk550r is available in SM Fairview for P62,999.00 with FREE LG 22” TV. ;D

I'm posting this message now, using my PK550 and HTPC (HDMI pass through on my Onkyo HT-RC260).  To tell you the truth, FullHD PC resolution (1920x1080) is way over-rated.  Either that or I'm too old for FullHD.  Wala na ako makita sa liit (to think na it's on a 50" screen!).  Had to downgrade it to 1600x900 so I can see it from 2 meters away.

So far, I am loving this PK550.  Sobrang value for money!  Presyong 720p na lang, considering the free items.  Nagamitan ko pa nang credit card sa pagbili.  Sayang ang points!   ;D

Set mo to 1365x768 and it would look a lot nicer as a PC monitor.  I use that setting on the 50V20 plasma when connected to a laptop.  The resolution setting won't matter if you playback via KMP anyways - just make it full screen.

mga sir pwede malaman kung mga magkano ang magiging damage nito sa kuryente per hour po halimbawa?

depende ho sa setting nyo at video content.
pag DYNAMIC setting at madalas bright scene ang video content, mataas din ang average power consumption.
halimbawa sa DYNAMIC setting at presuming na average power consumption nya ay 375 watts (power reading was done several times using my VOLTCRAFT logger and based on the showroom video material), the expected damage sa kuryente per hour @ roughly P10.00 per kilowatthour in Manila is :

0.375 kilowatt X 1 hour X P10.00/kilowatthour = P3.75/hour

if STANDARD setting, the average reading was about 250 watts or equal to 0.25 kw X 1 hr X P10.00/kwhr = P2.50/hour

depende ho sa setting nyo at video content.
pag DYNAMIC setting at madalas bright scene ang video content, mataas din ang average power consumption.

thanks sir iAMhitek so pag palagay na naten na P4/hr ang damage.4/hr x 5hrs x 30 days = P600 a month if used 5 hrs a day.

Newbie here, just bought the LG PK550 here.  Question about the burning in of this plasma, what do i use to burn in this plasma, is it the colorwash or whitewash? and do i have to turn off any enhancement during the burn in? Won't the unit turn off by itself after a prolong period of time(before the 24hours burn in time)?  TIA

i used the colorwash, pero tama ka, the unit will turn off after some time.

napansin ko lang na yung colorwash has a "bug".  The colors interchange with each other, but the white boxes remain constant.  So I actually have to stop white wash and trigger it again after some time.

Sabi nang iba use the Cinema mode.  Just chose the one with the most conservative settings.  Yung default vivid kasi galit na galit sa contrast and brightness...

Download the plasma break-in v120.1.zip http://www.filecrop.com/plasma-panasonic.html then save to a USB flash drive then load at the back-left-side of the TV.

These break-in images will cycle through lots of various shades of color to enable the phosphors to mature evenly for your Plasma. You will also be able to see if there are dead pixels sa unit mo basta isa-isahin mo lang yun slides at check the panel. If in case meron ka makitang dead pixel(s), call LG immediately para mapapalitan agad ng bago ang unit mo.

1. Use one of the inputs preferably the component

2. Settings: Cinema (User) – to be used for break-in only

Speed setting: Slow
Contrast: 100
Brightness: 50
Sharpness: 50
Color: 50
Tint: 0
Color Temp: 0

Gamma: Medium
Black level: Low

3. Any type of "enhancements" should be turned off.

Just to share lang sa lahat, my plasma na nabili ko 3 months ago ay pinalitan ng bagong unit ng LG after I found out na meron palang 1 dead pixel sa unit ko. Thanks to the LG guy named Noel sa SM Makati for helping me out.

Yun nga lang it took us at least 6 units na stocks nila sa SM Makati before ako nakakuha ng defect free panel. Kaya I suggest dun sa mga bibili at mga nakabili na e please check your units baka meron mga nakatagong dead pixels dyan.

Thanks for this ojokik.  I tried downloading the webapalooza plasma slides v120 previously, but that download wasn't working.  Your link above is perfect.

I just loaded the images now, and found 2 stuck pixels.  I'll leave the slide show for the whole day, baka ma-"unstuck" yung pixels.

Na-wall mount ko na yung PK550, so I'm thinking if kailangan ba papalitan unit.  The 2 stuck pixels won't be noticeable unless I intentionally look at them.  For the casual viewer, di nga makikita under normal viewing conditions.

Hay...

It won't go away believe me. I highly suggest that you call LG Support at 902-5544 and report your case. Magpapadala sila sa bahay nyo ng LG Technician to verify the dead pixel and make the necessary reports. Paki ready mo lang yun receipt mo from SM. Once confirmed, you will be then be informed by LG on how your unit will be replaced. Yun sa akin nga, I've already spent for the 200hr break-in period tapos maganda na yun PQ nun TV, tapos ngayon balik to zero ako for the break-in after my unit was replaced.  :-[

will LG replace the unit on account of 2 dead pixels?  ::)

@jerix

Yes they will. Sa personal experience ko, I had one dead pixel dun sa unit ko which I bought last Dec 31 and still LG replaced it with a new one after 2-3 months of use. I was actually surprised with LG's returns policy pati na rin with SM.

The information that was provided by the customer service ng SM, within 1 year pag may nakitang factory defect dun sa LG unit e pede syang papalitan. Dead pixel(s) is considered as a factory defect na di na kayang maayos kaya pede i-replace. SM can actually help facilitate with the coordination with LG on the replacement.

My actual experience can be verified with SM Makati 816-1178/892-3232/892-1021 just look for the LG guy named Noel or the SM Customer Service personnel named Mari and Jeff asked them about the guy name Francis (me) na nagpa replace ng unit sa kanila after checking 6 units na stocks nila.  :)

Ojokik -- this is really good news. Actually after sales support is also one of my prime considerations. That is why despite the good price offers of some shops I cannot turn my head away on buying my gadgets in SM, which is near my place and an LG unit, which has an excellent after sales support in particular. I may get my pk550 unit this weekend and i wish my unit will be good.

Now, i havent read yet testimonies or reviews on how the PK550 render SD - 480p DVD files. It will be much appreciated if  owners can post their own experience on this. Thanks.

I called up SM Fairview Friday morning to ask whether or not further price cut will be implemented in view of the ongoing 3-day sale. SM informed to hurry up because the 63K price of the pk550r with free 22 lcd tv will   have additional 5% price cut from 10 - 12 am only that day, March 4, 2011. With that info I immediately packed up and just informed my office that i have some sort of emergency and I need to go home. I also called up my partner to take the money and rush to SM. Exactly 11:30 when i reached the Appliance Center and ordered immediately one unit of pk550. At least my partner arrived 15 minutes later with the cash.

I got the unit for only 59.4k  ;D

-So far using the v120 slide, I still see NO dead pixels. I just hope it will stay dead pixel free forever. ;D

At least 200 hours. Never tried na 24hours straight, normally mga 3 hours gaming and movies tapos 4-5 hours break-in slides a day till you get to 200 hours. Once ma reach mo at least 100 hours sa break-in dun mo makikita ang improvement ng PQ and mas mabilis mawala ang image retention.

I did not do any deliberate break-in on mine, just used CINEMA and reduced the contrast to 70. Since I have Cignal HD then my channels are full wide-screen, no pillar-boxes. 3 months later, at around 4 hours a day usage, the PQ is even better. I also turned the Orbiter on.

Bros... how will I set the TV up so the V Slide will continuously play and cycle through the colors without me playing it again from to time.? Thanks

observation:

I am hearing strange "frying" and annoying sound on the bottom left of the screen. The sound seems to be coming from an exhaust vent on that area. In itself the TV is silent. However, i can hear the frying sound only when a video signal is started. The sound increases or decreases as the video image changes. What is this? Is this the time to call  LG?

Comments please...

Bro just press the slide show tapos mag loop na yan over and over pero dapat slow mode ha.

Frying sound? I think you need to call LG na regarding that kasi ang alam kong solution dyan is meron silang hihigpitan screw sa likod ng panel. Yan nabasa ko sa AVS forums please read post  #442 below pero dapat let the LG technician do that for you.

I also like this because of all this good reviews kaso ala pa budget maybe sometime if budget permits. All I can say is best deal talaga ito cause, my bayaw saw the bracket price around P 4k+ in Greenhills. While the 22 lcd tv is around P 14k so Sir Jerix bought this plasma for around P 37k lang :o. Tama si ojokik.  Do a select all on the images, then play as slideshow.  Just press the middle enter button, and you'll see the options.

About your "frying sound", I had that too initially, same area, lower left.  It's actually the speaker popping (mahinang pops).  Put the unit on MUTE, and mawawala rin yung sound.

I'm not sure what it is, but parang hindi ko na siya napapansin lately.

As per experience lang po, the discount can be given sa kahit na anong SM Appliance center basta ma inform mo lang yun ahente or customer service that you know of that particular discount. Haggle ka lang kasi as long as available sya sa isang branch, applicable na sya to all other branches. Actually yun date and time cut-off negotiable pa rin yan based from previous learnings ko sa kanila.

In connection with the "frying" sound coming from my pk550, which i immediately reported to LG for checkup, the service man came to my place just a while ago, because he happened to be in our area this afternoon. He heard the frying sound the way it sounded and as reported. To find it out the what is causing the problem, he connected directly the HDMI to the various video source players, bypassing the ONKYO. As observed no frying sound was emitted by the TV when the player is connected directly to it. His assessment: the STATIC Sound which is emitted by the speaker that is located at the bottom portion of the TV may be due to the cable or may have been caused by a signal from the ONKYO. I reconnected back the source cable to the ONKYO to check it again, and connected the onkyo to the TV. I pushed the HDMI cable tightly to the HDMI out of the ONKYO and fortunately the frying sound never came back anymore.  ;D

Hats off to LG.  ;D

Although after removing the HDMI cable and putting them back again solved the Frying sound that is emitted by the TV, I am a bit curious on how this actually happens. The Onkyo receives all the sources and is connected to the TV via HDMI. If the static electricity is coming from the Onkyo which is causing the frying sound on the TV, will this be cured? Is there a need therefore to install grounding? Thanks

I discovered that one cause of the frying sound from coming out from the speaker of the pk550 was the audio.  That should be on MUTE status if you are not using it as TV. Once i did that the frying sound disappeared. ;D

My pk550 is still very young - we are only using it for about 2 hours at least a day, i really dont know when shall we reach the 100 to 200 hours of break-in. However, despite its youth it already shows excellent picture on 720 and 1080 files coming from my egreat m34a NMT. I think we all get used na in the family to the color repro of this TV using the cINEMA Mode which we will use until we reach 100 hours.  ;D

The pk550 displayed in SM appliance store in fairview is not well calibrated i think. Its color and picture is night and day when compared to what i am seeing now with my unit. I just wish LG can do something to their demo units in various stores and shops, to attract customers. As I observe the Samsungs, Sony, panasonic or even Devant, Sanyo and the rest of the brands are using BR discs to demo their units in stores; LG is only using a crappy dvd disc. So many are not impressed with this unit because they cannot see its potential of being an excellent TV.

Why not try running the v120 slides overnight or at least a few hours a day? para maka bawas dun sa 200hrs break in period. At least pag ginamit mo yun, even ang pag mature ng mga phosphors kasi full 1080 ang size each slide.

I fully agree with you, crappy ang mga demos nila sa mga displays nito and what is even more crappy is they are only using the store demo settings which is defaulted sa Vivid picture settings. That’s why di masyado ma display ang magandang PQ nun TV when it comes to deep blacks and sharp images.

Excellent TV indeed!

i tried the first day, but i cant sleep and i do not feel comfortable that the TV is open, sa isip ko baka something might happen kaya bumangon ulit ako after a while para patayin yung TV..Maybe this weekend from 8 am to 8 pm na lang ...Hayy! antagal talaga hintayin 200 hours.

Bro ganyan din ako dati, di nakatulog when I left it on overnight. Pero nasanay na din kasi naging excited ako malagpasan yun 200hrs. Yun nga lang after na ng break-in period, pinapalitan ko yun unit for the dead pixel kaya back to zero ako... I'm now about 40hrs sa break-in nun bago.

Haggle mo pa yun less 5%, sabihin mo dito sa Manila meron ganyan.

or better wait for the sale bro. Just the way i did, go there within the first hour of their 3-day sale and the will slash another 5% of the price of the pk550 which will make it 59.4K only.  ;D
Title: Re: LG PK550 50" Plasma TV
Post by: mars on Mar 16, 2011 at 06:27 AM
Bros ojokik and jerix, I tried to haggle last night pero yun na daw talaga ang discounted price dahil Araw ng Davao sale ngayon. Until March 31 daw, then balik sa 69,990.  Their LCD's and LED's are 30% off. Plasma is 10% off. Ok lang. At 62,990, it's the least expensive 50" full HD plasma brand dito sa ngayon considering na may free 22" LCD TV and wallmount. I think the difference in price is due to the freight and handling costs from Manila to Davao. At over 40 kilos, mga 3,000 din yung freight plus insurance, which is a percentage of the value of the unit.

I got my 50PK550R last night. I was planning to buy it today, kasi when I called SM the other day, 3 units pa daw ang available. At the back of my mind, something (or someone) was telling me to go to SM last night and make my final decision kung yung LED ba or yung plasma ang kunin ko. Mabuti na lang. When I got there, only one unit was left sa stockroom nila. After 10 days pa daw ang next arrival

I brought a Catwoman DVD, Spidey 3 BD and a USB with the break-in slides. SInubukan yung movies na sabay-sabay nakaandar ang plasma, LED and LCD nila with me and my wife sitting in front. I asked them to set the picture settings based sa bedroom conditions ko (yung ginagamit kong settings sa Sammy LCD ko). Halos walang difference sa overall pq. Yun lang, ang whites sa plasma is not as white compared to the LED (medyo dirty white). Pero yung greens and reds, halos pareho, or even better. Awa ng Diyos, wala namang dead pixels.

As they were repacking the unit back to the box prior to payment, may mag-asawang nagmamadaling dumating. Kukuha rin ng same unit. They were advised na last unit na yung kinuha ko, at mga 10 days pa bago makarating yung bagong units. It's a pity to see their diappointment. If I pushed through with my plan to wait until today, ako yung magiging disappointed.

Medyo malabo yung mga cable channels. I don't know how this can be remedied. Kapareho lang nung sa LCD ko. But sa HD movies, very satisfied ako. Previewed Bourne Ultimatum, Spy Kids 3, Cars and Ice Age 3, maganda lahat. Yung advantage over LCD is the bigger size and it's softer sa mata. Cinema mode pa lang ito with the basic settings all set to 50.

Thanks to this thread, I was able to decide to buy this unit. Break-in period pa ako. In time, I will find out if I got a really good buy, or I got a "charge to experience." I hope that it's the former.

Mars, problema talaga yan maliban na lang kung HD signal ang bigay ng provider nyo jan at tiyak HD din and dating. My cable here in SJDM Bulacan is still analog - it is not fine on the PK550 but nice on my CRT TV - so sa CRT na lang iton cable and dedicated for movies na lang ang pk550 ko. This makes it longer to break this in. kasi mga 1 movie file lang ako nightly once i get home from work, and maybe 3 to 4 during weekends.
Title: Re: LG PK550 50" Plasma TV
Post by: mars on Mar 16, 2011 at 10:19 AM
You're right jerix. Ok sa crt ang analog cable tv. But when I tweaked my sammy lcd, little by little, nag improve na ang reception. Not as good as crt though, but a far cry from when I first purchased it. Andun kasi ang malaking effect, fine tuning the channel until I get a good picture.

And if you have finally decided to buy this TV and once you get to set it up at home, you may use the same v120.1 slides to break-in your TV with the following settings…

1. Use one of the inputs preferably the component

2. Settings: Cinema (User) – to be used only for break-in only

Speed setting: Slow
Contrast: 100
Brightness: 50
Sharpness: 50
Color: 50
Tint: 0
Color Temp: 0

Gamma: Medium
Black level: Low

3. Any type of "enhancements" should be turned off.

Ojokik, may i just confirm whether or not your break-in setting particularly the contrast which is set to 100 is only for the SLIDES or ok too for movies during break-in. Mine is only 70 for movies but i am eager to make it 100 if it will still be fine.

Bro, strictly for Break-in slides only based dun sa nabasa ko sa avsforums na post ni Big Brad with great experience with Pk550 tv.

I'm now at 15 hours into by break-in. My settings are as follows:

TV/DVD/BD: Cinema mode. All settings set to 50, all enhancements off.

Break-in slides: Cinema mode. Contrast set to 70, all other settings at 50, all enhancements off.

Ok na ba ito?

Actually, satisfied na ako sa cinema mode settings when watching movies. Hindi masakit sa mata, although malabo pag night scenes sa cable. Baka hindi ko na i-calibrate pagkatapos ng 200 hours, unless there are better settings that you can suggest. Vivid and standard are too bright for me.

Btw, I noticed some IR sa upper right hand corner when I change channels. Puting puti kasi yung channel box. Few seconds lang nakaexpose, may IR na. Takes about 20-30 seconds bago mawala. I hope na maayos ito after 100-200 hours of break-in.

Bro please read the avsforums link below posts  #3102 and #3109 on why the CONTRAST should be set to 100 during break-in. This is the same source I used as reference for the break-in process.

You can actually learn alot by reading the posts from the dead-pixels, humming to the advanced settings. Yun nga lang more than 160+ na ang pages dyan. hehe

I'm running the break in slides at the moment and I have a few questions.

I was told these were the settings to use for break in:

Speed setting: Slow
Contrast: 100
Brightness: 50
Sharpness: 50
Color: 50
Tint: 0
Color Temp: 0

Gamma: Medium
Black level: Low

Are these correct? I just wanted to make sure.

Also, is it safe to have the contrast maxed out? Is there a limit to how long I should run the slides for? I mean like is there a length of time that I should let them run for, then shut it off or is it fine to let them run for however long?

After the 200 (or shorter?) hour mark, am I in the clear to just use the TV like I normally would?

Quote from: Big Brad;18996212
Yes, as long as you're running the slides maxing out contrast is the proper way to do it. If it were lower, it would make no sense to use slides to break in the panel. Remember, the point of doing the break in is to burn the phosphors in at a faster rate. It is not meant or done to prevent image retention/burn-in.

I would run them for no more than 200 hours. After that, I would still suggest using common sense (ie., don't watch 4:3 content with sidebars for 8 hours a day).

Wala bro, kaya ako ginagawa ko meron akong log sheet na katabi ng TV na fini-fill-up ko everytime we turn-on and turn-off the TV lalo na when I use the break-in slides.

Date/Time Start                   Date/Time End                   No. of Hours
3/15/11 12AM                               3/15/11  7AM                              7
3/16/11 1PM                                 3/16/11  7PM                              6

And so fort...

Mine is wall mounted, using the free wall mount, and about 7cm and 3mm ang clearance nung likod from the wall.  Ok naman HDMI ko, but is bent and touching the wall.  May nagbebenta naman sa Accessories section nang HDMI port-saver / 90° HDMI adaptor.

Makakabit yan sir, kahit stiff RG6.  You can use RG59 para mas pliable.  Or you can get a similar right-angle F-connector adaptor (I have them, so PM mo na lang ako kung kailangan mo talaga).

I've been using my tv for about 50 hours now. The other day, I noticed na may hairline size na red vertical line sa leftmost border ng tv. Also, may blue vertical line sa rightmost border and blue horizontal line sa top border. Hairline din pareho. Have you guys noticed this, and is this normal? Di naman napapansin kung hindi tititigan. Noticeable lang pag white or light gray ang screen, or pag nag whitewash ako.

Also, di ko alam kung bakit grayed-out yung film mode (24 fps) when I play bluray and dvd discs sa bluray player via HDMI.

Download the plasma break-in v120.1.zip http://www.filecrop.com/plasma-panasonic.html then save to a USB flash drive then load at the back-left-side of the TV.

Tapos isa-isahin mo i-check yun slides para ma check kung may dead pixels yun plasma. Makakatulong yan bro.  ;)

got the panel replaced after 3 days of reporting the dead pixel. in fairness to them 1 dead pixel palit na kaagad buong pannel.

only downside is they scratched the screen mga 1 inch on the upper left part di naman halata OC lang ako. gusto ko sana report ulit kaso baka batukan na ako tech support ng LG.

anyway very happy with the purchase

regarding electric consumption nasa mga 320 - 350 sya when im viewing 1080p films in my desired setting. on cable viewing nasa 120-180 sya (naka maximum and energy saving ko) so di ganun kasakit sa bulsa when watching cable since destiny cable naman ako no use to tweak to optimal viewing since malabo destiny cable compared to other cable providers

last question

is there someone here in the philippines who does professional calibration of this tv. hopefully they can help me out after mga 2 months.

and any idea on how much it will cost ?

re. this lg 50pk550r, i'll be keeping this for at least 5 years, it already has everything i look for in a tv, full hd, HUGE 50" display, usb port, attractive razor slim bezel and frame, coming from a panasonic 42pv70, i'm already used to the disadvantages of plasma such as IR, so it's not a big deal anymore.

only lacking is 3D, but active shutter glasses 3D are just too cumbersome and are not worth the hassle, i'd only consider 3D when glasses free 3Dtvs are rolled out and become mainstream.

thanks for the advice though  ;D

currently breaking in the unit with the V120 slides, so far no dead pixels on close scrutiny.

i'm placing a small fan behind the tv during break in, to minimize the heat from the unit while walang AC ang room  ;D

Swerte mo. I got mine at 63,990 during Araw ng Davao. Same freebies.

Well, after a little more than 200 hours, I did some diy calibration on my unit using AVSHD 709. Tapos noon, I made some more tweaks sa standard mode settings (I now prefer it to cinema mode) to get my preferred pq, then ran an Ice Age BD and some dvds. All I can say is.....WOW!!!

Honestly, there were still doubts in my mind last night on the plasma vs lcd issue (although it's water under the bridge already). So what I did was compare the newly calibrated plasma and my "old" previously calibrated sammy lcd. I observed the following:

- Plasma has softer lines (although sharpness can be adjusted to make the lines more pronounced, but then this would also make the picture look unnatural).

- Plasma has deeper blacks, reds and greens.

-Lcd has whiter whites, but pushing plasma contrast way up to 95-98 on standard setting makes whites as glaring as than on the lcd. I don't like this because it's too bright for my eyes, and i believe it would shorten the lifespan of the TV.

- There may be a huge difference in overall pq sa store, but in a home setting, di naman magkalayo ang dalawa.

Maganda ang lcd for games (no fear of burn-in) and bright room viewing. But for bedroom relaxation with soft lighting, I think that I made the right decision in getting a plasma. The lcd is now back to the kids' room.

Sale to sa sm fairview 59,990 with free 22" lcd LG home theater forgot the model pero yung mga maliliit ang speakers, wall bracket at benq14mp digicam...grabe very tempting kaya lang kakabili ko lang ko lang 42in plasma

That's a very good deal bro. Yung promo kasi dito sa SM Davao, walang home theater and digicam.

My wife and I went to the store planning to get a 42" TV (47" led sana, pero it's outside my budget), but we went home with the 50 incher PK550r. Main consideration ko kasi is baka magsisi na naman ako if I get a smaller TV.

When I got my 37" lcd a few years ago, I was actually considering a 32" TV. I decided to get the 37" thinking na baka magsisi ako kung 32" lang. A few days later after watching the TV, eto na...I was thinking "sana yung 40" na lang kinuha ko." I just consoled myself by thinking "well, that's what you could afford at that time."

So now, looking at the 50" PK550r, I made some quick math. Deducting the price of the wallmount and the 22" lcd, the plasma would cost around 47K. Ok na yung price sa akin, compared to the other brands na over 46K, pero 42" lang. That would also spare me from buying a 22" lcd computer monitor at around 15K, which I was planning to do. Ginamit ko na lang yung budget to get another bluray player hehehe.

Mars, wala nga daw talaga HT and digicam freebie sa sm davao, badtrip, doon ata nila binawi ang freight cost to davao from manila.

currently mga 22-23 hours per day ang break-in ko nito using the V120 slides, may electric fan sa likod para di sobra init ang tv, half of the break in time naka AC ang room so safe sa overheat, at pahinga 30mins pag nasa room ako before resuming the slides, 22-23hours includes the 2-4hours of zoomed in tv and htpc use.

total nasa 40 hours pa yata ito, iwas muna ako sa ps3/xbox gaming while under 100hours para di prone to IR.

value for money sobra ito, almost same price sa Amazon after deducting the freebie value! while mga LCD/LED sa amazon are 50 to 70% lower than local prices. ;D

You're right mib. Value for money and bang for the buck, panalo itong pk550. Re the free home theater, parang may nabasa ako somewhere dito sa pdvd na hindi LG ang brand ng HT. Ok lang. I prefer the 22" lcd than an HTiB.

Di ako mahilig sa ps3 games kaya yung lcd and ps3, nasa room ng mga bata dahil sila ang mahilig. Ako, puro movies lang. Bad trip lang ang Home Channel dahil di maganda ang reception, although there's a bit of improvement after I calibrated the TV.

Regarding overheating, wala naman akong experience na nag overheat ang TV even when it's on at high noon to early afternoon without aircon. Parang mas mainit pa nga ang singaw ng lcd ko compared to the PK550.

Ah ok.

Title: Re: LG PK550 50" Plasma TV

wow in that case ganda deal nito sa manila, liquidate na yata nila itong model kaya daming freebies, sa amazon may 2011 model na kasi, although almost no difference but still considered 'old' model na ito since 2010 pa

yung free 22" lcdtv is also an old model, i bet the free HT is also a discontinued model, pati na rin digicam, kaya sabay na liquidate lahat in one package.

dvd player kasama sa HTIB?

if it's this one: (http://www.lg.com/ph/tv-audio-video/images/lg-home-theater-system-ht355sd-large.jpg)

that's 5k worth of HTIB

10 + 5 + 4 + 3, 59990 - 22k worth of freebies = 38k 50" full hd plasma, that's a bargain!

btw my set is approx. at 200 hours na, with proper/zoom slide break-in, i've noticed IR is very minimal now like it takes a loooong time for IR to show up (ps3 gaming), unlike when the set was at less than 50 hours i could easily see IR especially when playing ps3 games.

couldn't be more satisfied, playing 1080P ps3 games is heaven  ;D

Title: Re: LG PK550 50" Plasma TV

if i'm not mistaken 720P model lang yata yan, for me di ako affected, glasses 3D is still bulky and hassle pa, i'd rather have full hd.  i'm waiting for glasses free tv tech to improve and become mainstream before taking the 3D plunge.
Title: Re: LG PK550 50" Plasma TV
Post by: mars on May 31, 2011 at 08:16 AM
Bor, yun ang downside. 720p vs 1080p. Pero may mga nagsasabi that at a distance of 6 feet or more, di mo na makikita ang difference. Viewing distance ko is about 10 feet. There are some feedbacks here sa pdvd ng mga nakabili na, and halos lahat naman positive.

Title: Re: LG PK550 50" Plasma TV
Post by: mib on May 31, 2011 at 03:02 PM
ako nasa 5-7feet ang viewing distance kaya mas prefer ko full hd, at katabi kasi ng tv ang desktop ko kaya sometimes i watch beside the tv, dati grabe mga pixels ng non fullhd panny plasma ko hehe

at sayang rin kung mag 3D ako ngayon, my son is only 3yrs old, afaik di recommended ang 3D viewing pag ganun pa kabata, after a few years pag mature na 3D, doon ko na consider palitan tong pk550 and besides, my next upgrade should be a 60" at least, buying another 50" is a no for me  ;D

Sa akin naman bro, pinag iinitan ng mga nak ko yung pk550 ko kaya nag iisip ako na kumuha ng isa pang TV. If ever, i'm considering the LG 50" plasma 3D or the Samsung 51" plasma 3D. Mura na kasi ang price. Mga 50K or less.
Title: Re: LG PK550 50" Plasma TV
Post by: mib on Jun 01, 2011 at 08:23 PM
bro you might want to consider the LG 3D Cinema tv, uses lighter glasses with no need for charging + wider viewing angles, possible to lean back while watching.  although it is expensive, something to look forward to for me in the future pag mature and cheap na  ;D

"LG PK550 50" plasma 50% OFF!!!-CASH/STRAIGHT/12mos 0% interest!!!" Php34,995 free wall bracket

ayun.....hugot kagad ng wallet, ikaskas kagad ang card!!! hehehe...

pagdating sa bahay set up kgad, tried watching the imax 1080p transformers 2.....CHAMPION!!!! sulit na sulit
nung una nag worry pa ako sa lifespan nya, pero for its price-satisfaction ratio, wala nang tatalo pa siguro

so far yung slide test muna ginagawa ko with the recommended setting...ilang oras ba ito gagawin? tapos yung white wash naman ilang oras and yung color wash ilang oras....

sorry guys newbie kasi ako sa plasma kaya naguguluhan ako kung anu ba talaga ang tamang procedure ng break-in, hindi ako mashado magaling mag research, hope you can help me out!!
thanks alot!!!

Ayun o! Congrats Master Gerard! :) Nagkakaubusan na pala.

Oo master, salamat talaga sa tip. :)

Just to make a quick review on the PK550:

+
* No visible IRs. My panasonic 42pv80, after watching a movie, i see fainted black bars that stays temporarily on the screen. Dito wala.
* 1080p + big screen. Wow! The HD movies I borrowed from master ivan appears very detailed. I can count the blackheads and pimples of each actor that appears on the screen  ;D
* Design. Sobrang nipis niya and the razor bezel is a winner :)

-
* Has that buzzing/cracking sound. Pero kapag nakamute, nawawala. I read from one of the posters earlier that it was resolved by replacing his hdmi cable. I've tried 3 different HDMI cables, ganun pa rin, oh well, i'll just have it on mute, i don't need the internal speakers anyway.
* Build quality. compared to the other TVs we have(Pana, Sony and Vizio), i feel LG used cheaper materials to build this. Example lang is the base stand. It feels like it was made from cheap plastics that will break through time. The remote looks cheap too. Parang remote ng mga China-made devices. The backpanel also feels cheap. It feels like the metal used to hold hard drives/optical drives in a desktop PC. Masyadong manipis. Pati stickers on the TV itself looks as if it was printed on a bond paper. Hehe

Overall, I can't find any other TVs with a great value as this. Tagal ko na pinapangarap magkaroon ng full HD TV. Finally, I got one at an awesome price!  :)

When I asked at SM Appliance North - The Block last Sunday afternoon, the saleslady checked the inventory on the computer. There was 1 in Marikina but it was reserved already, and a display unit at SM Novaliches. All other branches 0 stock already.

Bro ninjababez that black dot on the blue screen is a very bright white dot on my plasma.

I called up LG and they promised to check it out. Now my concern is this: I really dont want to see this dot on my screen, though it is generally unnoticeable when we watch except when a certain shade of blue color passes that portion of the screen and I am about 3 feet away from it.

Under the circumstances, should i ask for a replacement? If LG no longer have this plasma model what alternative option should I have? Thanks

bro DPT excites the stuck pixel.  if it's just a slow slide useless lang   :-\
iirc may nabasa akong gumawa ng slides of different color pero mabagal, now if you can speed it up to milliseconds shifting, pwede :)

I am a lil bit sad if they change the panel because it means to me that the new panel will have to undergo long hours of operation again before i can enjoy its full glory. I noticed that the picture quality of my plasma is better now when it was newly opened six months ago. Parang its beauty goes with age. ;)

Depende ata kung gano katanda na yung TV. Kapag bagong bili at may dead pixel, alam ko pinapalitan nila agad. Kung warranty repair depende ata kung may available panel, kung wala palit unit ata.

I think kapag bagong bagong bili palang, or,  if the maker can't successfully fix despite replacing what are deemed as defective parts, or if they cant repair due to lack of parts (as in the case of Samsung).

Pero I think LG's after service is pretty good based on my and my relatives' experience, and also considering that they would readily replace the entire panel for a single suspect blemish.  Yun nga lang, baka their after service is good and prompt because kailangan ng products nila.

Well, papalitan mo nalang ulit ng bagong panel.  In any case, of course you can try to demand what you want.  In your case, you can ask the possibility that there are other parts that cause damage to the panel - the vital video engine board for instance.

I think we have the same impression on their unit replacement policy. I googled on the problem and it seems that the solid black vertical line may have been caused by faulty connection. However, if this is not the cause it may be a panel problem na. so they need to change again i supposed. Anyway it is good that this happened when my tv is still young and warranty is still on. Thanks for your comments Clondalkin  ;)

If you read the warranty agreement for most CE items, it almost always states that the manufacturer reserves the right to either repair or replace the unit with the same or an equivalent model.

So you can request for a replacement (if that's what you want), but the manufacturer is in the position to reject that request if they can fix the product issue/defect.

Yeah, the service technician explained that too that as long as parts are available LG does not grant unit replacement. These replaced parts will become as waste materials and LG no longer circulate these.

This LG model seems to have a lot of issues.

Last month... bigla nalang namatay ang unit. May audio pero walang video. The LG tech came immediate, check and inform me that they will replace the panel.

But when the panel came... may mga dead pixel (yung orig ko walang dead pixel) and the manufacturing date seems to be the same as the one that they will replace. So BE CAREFULL guys, the panel that they replace is actually not new but a REFURB one. Yung nasira sa iba... irepair nila then ikabit sa iba.

After they replace the panel. Yun HDMI 2 naman ang di gumagana. So they came back again and replace the main board.

But after awhile, nag flicker yung screen. So I called them up that they should already replace the unit kase halos lahat pinalitan na din except the casing. i try pa daw nila i repair... so will see. malapit na mawala pasensya ko... DTI na sa susunod.

Tama po. Nagwork din po ako sa CE, talagang ganyan po policy ng most CE companies. Maski sa cars pag warranty work, minsan refurb kinakabit na parts.

Nasa warranty agreement po yan. The manufacturer reserves the right to.... (insert terms here).

Dahil sa terms ng agreement ng most companies maski nga pag sira yung nabili mo from the start eh pwede nila i-offer lang eh service with refurb or equivalent parts (or replacement with a refurb or equivalent unit) at sa alam ko eh walang legal basis ang customer to demand otherwise (at pwede ka din idecline ng store since pumirma ka na "received items in good condition" sa receipt from the store). The return/exchange policy ng store may not apply kasi sira na yung unit mo, when you agreed na okay ang condition when you got it by signing the receipt. Customer service na lang para hindi madala ang customer kaya nageextend ng replacement ang stores at manufacturers in these cases, dahil inaalagaan nila ang image nila. This is also why companies often oblige sa mga request for unit replacement or repair with bnew parts, lalo na kung bago pa ang unit.
