Title: Ipod to toslink or digital coax or HDMI
Post by: fattyacid on Jun 02, 2011 at 09:51 AM
Do any of our saers know how to connect ipod to AVR(no ipod link) via toslink or digital coax? I know some ipod dock can do it, but what model is the best for the money and how much? Or can it be done DIY? Thanks.

Audio-Visual Driver carries Wadia products. I think they have the 171i Transport and the matching 151 PowerDAC on display (available for audition).

I don't remember how much they quoted me for that pair.

Please contact them if you're interested. Arnold and Hansen are very helpful. :)
I think they still use these numbers:  638 - 8480 / 632 - 7984

Will this work? Im not interested in video, just the audio output.

Why not just use a 3.5mm plug cable to the AVR's line in? I could be wrong but based on the pinouts of the ipod connector I see it only has analog left and right line outs. Here's the pinouts I'm referring to:

http://pinouts.ru/PortableDevices/ipod_pinout.shtml (http://pinouts.ru/PortableDevices/ipod_pinout.shtml)

Maybe the reason why the available ipod to toslink converters are so expensive is because of the additional analog to digital converter circuity to do the conversion. Honestly I don't see the point of using toslink unless the receiver has no audio line in.

Check the pinouts. You'll see USB data lines. When you connect your ipod to your laptop it will appear like a usb flash drive. Itunes can play music stored in the ipod the same way it can play music off of a usb flash drive.

The reason I asked because I wanted to output my ipod music data, which I have collected over the years, to an AVR digitally to avoid using the lossy analog transmission. Methinks the docks with digital out does not use ADC.

My reading from the various write-ups of the Wadia is that it accesses the aac file stored in the ipod and then converts it into a digital audio bitstream that is fed to your audio equipment. This is a digital to digital conversion so you're correct that there is no DAC. In a manner of speaking those digital docks are akin to NMTs that uses your ipod as a glorified external disk drive.

If your ipod music files aren't DRM protected you might as well buy an NMT and transfer all your music files into it. You can buy a PCH A210 for the price of the Wadia quoted above. I've converted all my CDs into lossless flac and using it to play my music.
