don't worry. looking at the specs, it's not much of a leap in terms of your normal *ehem* playback (too early to tell in my pov). one way or another, you've got to give them credit for trying to push their hw to the limit since the a200's release (think 3d playback from a 2yr old hw). and most importantly, i don't need to rely only on pdvd's nmt thread if i have issues or questions with the popcornhour (catch my drift?). though i envy ert for being clever enough to solely distribute (<- verification needed) this model w/in our shores. this brand practically sells itself.

Syabas is really a software company and a very good one at that, that drives the A210 hardware and now with this newer hardware providing 20% processing power combined with an 800 Mhz memory bus, that gives them a LOT of room to play with--- you can just expect more good things to come (apps and improved interface)
faster would need more cooling so thats likely the reason for the enclosure change
Syabas also has POPBOX and POPBOX 3D ($USD129), it would be interesting to the consumer to get side-by-side comparison between POPBOX V8, POPBOX 3D, PCH A210, PCH C200 , PCH 300 which spells out new stuff the PCH can do that the lower models cant. From there they can decide if they really need it or they just want to play MKV and do away with the apps entrirely.

Are those "exhaust" holes on top of the casing ..... personally, dont like those to be on top, since dust will likely creep in.

The 8657 is 20% faster + it has a L2 cache so there will be some increase in performance.
Internal testing reveals the Gigabit USB port can transfer data at around 24~30MB(ytes) sec which is like a PC's transfer rates when copying from internal SATA to a external USB drive.
NMJ version 2 is already installed and boasts of better performance in terms of scraping capability as well as allowing flash based list views using coverart (like Realtek players).
The biggest change is the totally new firmware front end (UI) that has dropped HTML and uses Adobe Flashlite.
It's actually a big deal because dropping HTML (called Gaya browser) that was in use since the A-100, YAMJ HTML and pretty much a lot of the existing CSI user developed apps will not work anymore.
There's actually a poll going on in the main forum for the PCH asking owners if they want to move to the same UI as the A-300. If Syabas pushes forward with this, expect the 200 series to be a bit faster but not as fast as the A300.

Currently, playback under Full BD Navigation mode takes about 20-30 secs (I guess) of looking at that circular light that goes around and around in the middle of the screen. Playback stoppage is around 5 to 10 secs. Will there be any improvement or at least will it be as fast as File Mode?
Image quality - so what's improved in the video processing side? Richer colors? Deeper than Deep Colors like what plasma makers claim every year? Better Codecs? Better video engine? Improved PGS in MKV performance? Support for 10-bit H264 encoding? The A210/A200 does not stutter at all ever since Full BD Navigation was enabled in May, and unlike 3D gaming where hardware is normally lagging relative to the requirements of new games, I don't expect the current BD standard would be that much more demanding than its current specs.
Audio quality - any improvements? For instance, just wondering if the low level AAC, WMA output has been rectified somehow. Nothing wrong with DTS, AC3, DTS-HDHR, HDMA, TrueHD with the current gen players - but perhaps there were audio circuits or functions tweaked?
I was hoping to see full 3D BD support or at least, full-SBS support. Well? Not really critical but why not if the hardware is capable.
Why the heck won't they replace that cheap looking remote? Hehe. Ok save on cost is fine, but it looks cheap compared to those of branded consumer electronic makers. Fully functional though, so its ok.

Regarding pricing, I hope they would follow that of Apple and PC makers' strategy, i.e., maintain the price for new models and reduce the price of previous gen. Puidi diba pero baka asa pa? Hehehe. At 6K pesos, the A210 would kill the Realteks. Hehehe - but that kind of pricing might kill the A300 too.

IQ will be similar the 8647 is still part of the 864x family after all.
If the Gaya (HTML) file browser is dropped in favor of all Flash, the bootup and responsiveness will be faster.
BD playback engine will stay the same so it will slightly improve because of the L2 cache of the 8647.
What we're working on the next release is native resolution output so those with external scalers can opt to have those devices do it instead of the PCH.
This isn't the 8910 chip (it's still vaporware) so no native 3D ISO playback for sure.
10bit compression for H264 has been ruled out by Sigma themselves (not Syabas). The chip isn't powerful enough. Anime fans will have to look for 8bit compression or jump to a HTPC as there is no media player capable of playing these back.

Can someone tell me what is the difference between this and the xtreamer prodigy ? I'd really like to get the A300 but the only thing that's stopping me from getting PCH is its boot time.
I think yung xtreamer prodigy may "airplay" so pwede mong i play yung iphone/ipad audio and video mo wirelessly to the prodigy.
Can this be done by the A300?
I've been waiting for so long na lumabas yung prodigy but until now wala pa. Then i see this... hmmmm.

bootup is just a onetime thing when you power up and my C200 is just 10 seconds longer than my S900 (55 secs0 so its not a big deal, considering its sigma 86xx family. I would always pick sigma anyday over any processor out there if PQ/SQ NMT functionality ang hanap mo,
The apps, after sometime, you'll get tired of the installs and updates that you'll go back to the player's main purpose --- movies, music and photo playback.
if you can afford an A300, i think you'd be more comfortable, IMO, getting an ipad to for your internet needs, and do away with the apps unless there's really something there you need.
Pero, to each his own. you have to just jump the itch and grab one, so you can join the fun.

external via USB, yes, Region free DVD ? dunno.
external via USB na BDROM, not sure for this model. My C200 unit works with Liteon BDROM, not region free, but you can select your region up to 5 times daw, I no longer use the BDROM coz i used a BDROM region free player in the other Sigma 8643 NMT(it-which-should-not-be-named)

Akala ko mga 20secs lang ang bootup ng prodigy vs popcornhour's 1minute bootup, parang ganun kalaki ang difference. I know bootup is a one time thing only pero nakaka inis kasi pag hindi binabasa yung external drive mo, you need to turn the unit off then on again and wait for another minute. Then ayaw nanaman. LOL. Sometimes it takes 5x tries so that's a whole 5+ minutes while naiinip na yung mga ibang viewers ko hehe.

Kapag hindi binabasa yung external drive mo at kailangan i-reboot, that means you have a problem with drive to begin with.
For me I plug-in external USB drives every day to copy content to/from the internal HD and I've never had to reboot because the drive isn't recognized.

oh no, not what i mean. I am not comparing Prodigy (1186 Realtek Chip) with PCH C200 (864x). I am comparing amongst 8643--- PCH C200 with Egreat S900 which i both have. I pointing out that bootup of PCH is just 20 seconds longer (likely due to the add-on layer to handle its apps).
PCH (or any players) should not have problems sensing any 2.5" USB bus powered, so if prodigy has this issue with your HDD USB, try changing disks if that helps.
bootups do not indicate chips are faster,IMO it just makes us think it is. I dare not say 20 seconds realtek bootup (user perception when they see the menu, that is ready to play) but often it still excludes mounting of the filesystems which, in most cases, are deferred in most realteks i have. in egeat R200, it boot the OS first, then later senses the LAN/WLAN, then senses the disks (i.e. they show HDD01 plugged in). Baka that might help explain that your external drives miss the window of sensing it.
While Realteks boot faster ( under 30 seconds), the difference is worth the wait in PQ/SQ/IQ favoring Sigma 86xx. my 2 mamera worth. Prodigy looks promising with an HDMI 1.4, 3D, USB 3.0 and doesnt use Realtek SDK, which they claim is a good thing .

Adding (and removing) a 2nd...10th HDD inline to a booted-up PCH is pretty fast. Hot swapping of HDDs has so far been very safe, straightforward and fast in my experience. Only the initial boot-up will take about 1.5 mins or so.
I dont know what the Prodigy is capable of but full BD navigation is certainly worth the extra minute - my daughter normally does not care about full BD and likes to watch avi on her laptop pero laglag panga nya when we watched HPDH2 in full BD complete with Special Features...hehehe

reason i ask is that all my tv series are burned in a dvd, if so, will resume play etc. work with this media player? e.g. dvd has 12 xvids, i played 6th file, and after 20 minutes of playing i have to do something. i turn off media player. next time i turn on media player, will it resume exactly where i last played it?

Hmm,the resume on last played is tricky, coz DVD are non writable

Resume bookmarks are stored on the "Media Drive" you set. As long as you have a internal HD or even a USB flash drive attached to the PCH, it will store bookmarks for resume.

unless its an old firmware they are using on the A300, normally i'd wait 1-2 months if its a new player release, just to give time for the quirks to be ironed out.
But PCH has such good devt team and beta testers that I'd say no waiting time needed :)

A-300 is really faster (compared to A-110) in terms of boot-up, playing media and connecting to wifi thru the WN-150 USB dongle I bought together with this NMT.
Navigation is really seamless unlike the A-110.
At first, it has difficulty detecting the wifi signal but with a firmware upgrade, it immediately detected the wifi signal. Connecting to the networked media was fast.
It is a silent, sleek machine.
I'm really happy with my upgrade. ;D
Now to my next upgrade.. ;)

I think hindi sya capable. This model is an upgrade from the PCH A-200.

Thanks oReOsHaKe. Just wondering why they won't simply mention BDMV structures as well since most of the full BD rips are kept in that format instead of ISO container. Oh well, pareho lang naman ang laman inside the ISO container so full BD navigation should work either way.
30 seconds is a significant boost compared to the 1.5 mins it takes for the A200/A210 to reach "ready-to-play" state. Very nice indeed.

Regarding audio playback, there is significant improvement in AQ of FLAC and WAV materials played with the A-300. I guess I dont need to buy a dedicated Digital Music Player for now. ;D ;D

Un nga un cnasabi nila mas prefferd nla un external HDD over internal HDD. For better ventelation ng NMT. What about a sata dock station hooked to PCH? Mas okay din ba to sir instead placing internal HDD?

USB single/dual dock puede sir, but if your a300 has esata mas ok sana.
My c200 has 2 internal sata so my dual sata docks which can do both USB and esata, i just use usb2.0. even at bdmv folder / full bd Iso rips . No lags.

Better ask scifi-fan kung oks lang to do BT downloads with externally connected HDD. It should be workable as long as the apps are installed in a thumbdrive tapos assign mo lang yung destination disk of the downloads sa externally connected hard drive - I might be wrong though.
However, BT downloading via an NMT is an idea I trust even less than installing an HDD internally. Hehehe. Just sayin.
Docks work perfectly with the PCH - that's my most preferred set-up. Ang dali pa magpalit palit ng HDD anytime. If you have a lot of external connections, just use a powered USB hub - I've done 10 with the PCH-A200/A210 - kayang kaya bangkala. so dapat lalong kaya ng A300.
I dont know if meron eSATA or USB3.0 port ang A300 but USB2.0 will suffice unless you use the NMT for heavy file management.
If ventilation is a concern, tapatan mo lang ng electric fan. In my experience, umiinit ang PCH lalo na if you play full BD rips - kung A200, galit na galit yung fan - hehehe - but the A300 like the A210 should be quietly heating up - hahaha. Anyways, that bloody Onkyo AVR heats up a lot more...hehehe.

Lag? No la! Hehehe. No matter how many HDDs you connect, you get to play only 1 file/1HDD at a time diba? The rest are just there waiting to be accessed. With the PCH, best way is to power up with 1 HDD muna then once the boot-up is completed, then fire up them all remaining HDDs - that won't take much time even as you use the 1st HDD. Ang importante sa multi-USB-port connection is to make sure that each port supplies sufficient current at 5V para stable and reliable ang performance ng connected USB device. Kaya yung adapter ng 10-port USB hub has a higher amp rating than say 2 or 3 or 6, etc kahit pare parehong 5V ang output voltage. Anyway, I assume 3 rin ang available na USB port sa A300 just like the A200/A210, then reserve mo yung isang slot sa thumbdrive for the apps so you still have 2 slots for external HDDs - that should suffice.
OT: In my experience, mainit ang Onkyo than my Yamaha - pero mas mainit ang tunog ng Yamaha at the same AVR grade. I dont know about the Denon.

kahit ba HDMI 1.3a it can do 3D mkv playback? A300's faster processor should speed up the NMJ speeds, hope its full BD Menu navigation rin like C200, can anyone confirm?

I probably pick dock station or an external drive na lang cguro which has a dual compatibility sa USB 2.0 at 3.0 rather putting internal HDD sa PCH para atleast kht papaano hindi uminit ng husto un MP.

just got my pch, I am new to nmj and i am wondering why it did not recognize all movies which were in selected folder. The thing is it didn't even show up as unrecognized in the jukebox section. I then made a rescan and some new movies got recognized however some movies still remained missing.
I am missing anything? What should be the solution to include all the movies? TIA

Yes it's a USB slave port.
Once attached to a PC, it will mount the internal HD on your desktop as long as you have the proper driver on your PC to read ext2 partitions.

That might work well provided your usb hub is sufficient powered. Kung gusto mo sigurado, just connect the wifi dongle sa back USB port and then connect a POWERED usb hub sa front - I'm using a 10-port usb hub right now with my A200.

If you can find those cool-looking magnetic hubs, so much the better.

BTW, can the A300 play FULL-SBS in MKV?
Hindi talaga kaya ng A200 kahit in single MKV container na (as opposed to having 2 left and right files that have to be played simultaneously). I thought kakayanin pero wala talagang video. HTPC can.
Perhaps the A300's more powerful GPU/CPU can handle that na?

In my case I like to keep the front of the A300 clean. I rarely use the front usb port aside from firmware updates from a flash drive. I'm using a universal repeater functioning as a wifi bridge so I can use the ethernet port at the back. The cost of the universal repeater is a few pesos cheaper than the pch branded wifi dongle.

Do i need to install an internal HD sa A300 for me to use the NMJ v2 ? Balak ko kasi gumamit ng NAS (synology DS212) and have 2 or 3 PCH-A300 play from the NAS.
If hindi na kailangan ng internal HD, san nya i sa save yung mga content (pics/etc) ng mga movies ko when I use NMJ? pwede ba derecho sa NAS?

May nagkaproblem na ba dito about wifi connectivity?
Yung PCH A300 ko kasi minsan ayaw magconnect sa home network ko. My network is protected by WPA2 so I changed it to WPA tapos nagconnect sya. Then the next time I turned it on, ayaw na naman niya magconnect. So I switched back to WPA2, then nagconnect. Tapos next time na in-on ko, ayaw ulit magconnect.
Nagtataka lang ako bakit ganun. Pag hinihingi naman password ng wifi network ko, tama yung nilalagay ko pero sinasabi, "Could not link up. Please check password or local connection."

Yes it's a USB slave port.
Once attached to a PC, it will mount the internal HD on your desktop as long as you have the proper driver on your PC to read ext2 partitions.

It should work. I am just afraid the HD will die after repeated unintentional shutdowns (car ignition off).

Yes. It won't play retail DVD/BD.

hi, newbie to popcorn hour, I tried dvdfab and dvd decrypter to make .iso of my dvd collection. PCH A300 does see it, but when played, black screen no sound also. My cinematube has no problems with the iso ( but hates mkv's ).
What am i doing wrong?

Nangyari na sakin din ito. I suggest two things (that's what I did):
1) unplug the a300
2) unplug or reset your router
When they normalized back again and I tried updating online the firmware, nag ok na sya. I hope it works for you too. I did not bother searching what the "error" is all about.

Some bugs/issues with A300 I have encountered so far:
1. Youtube app - If you are like me who watches youtube often, please note this bug that I am experiencing. If I search or view a channel that shows HD content, and click play, the youtube app will not automatically play the lowres file (360p), thus, a black screen will be shown, and I will have to fastforward 10%, then return to 0% just to force the app to play. Other videos (via featured/browse) work fine, the app will automatically force play a lowres stream.
2. Does not support HiRes Sub/IDX subtitle - Player hangs/freezes and need to be rebooted if it encounters such subtitles. (See similar issue with C200 here: http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showthread.php?tid=36643).
I have only been tinkering with PCH A300 for 3 nights. More to come.

Hires sub/idx vobsub subtitle formats will never be supported because it's not a legitimate format by the owner of the codec. There is no commercial hires vobsubs because they are used in DVD which are limited to 480p.
Hires vobsubs are a hack job built by scene release groups for HTPC playback.
The 300 series support subtitle download so just use that to get external SRT version of the content.

Why dont you just connect externally, then install the apps in a USB thumbdrive? Lesser risk pa on potential incompatibility of HDD format.

hi! bali you have to reformat your 3tb sa pc using quick format..you have an option to choose masterboot record and GUI. you have to choose gui..if formatted ang 3tb it will come out as 2.72gb.

Hi! I occasionally experience a problem playing seamless branch bd file (i.e. multiple m2ts), before getting into the main menu, pch freezes and the only way to continue is to restart it. It's a a hit or miss thing since previously, the file plays flawlessly but there are times when it reverts back to the freezing problem. It occurs on the same file particularly before the main menu of the bd. I have the current firmware and i have no qualms about it except for the intermittent snags caused by multiples m2ts files. Im not sure if it has to do with switching from mt2s file to another with different audio fomat (i.e. previous m2ts file has dolby digital to an mt2s file in lpcm). Anyone having the same problem? any solution to this? TIA

How does one downgrade the firmware?
I upgraded to the new firmware 2 days ago... and now the sound coming from the A300 is a lot weaker than before the upgrade.
Where I would have a volume setting on my TV of 23 - 24 before... now I have to raise the volume setting to 36 and higher.

Have noticed that the volume is somewhat subdued on the latest firmware of the A300 ...... I was forced to upgrade to the latest one though, since the old firmware had subtitle synching issues, coming from a PAUSE or FF.

I don't use subtitles...and I hardly use the Pause button anyway, so, i guess it's not an issue for me.
I didn't like the fact that in the new firmware, the voice audio was just too weak.

Hi all, I am having problems with my Popcorn A300. I have a Synology Network drive and my files are there.
I open my popcorn hour a300 and stream my files from the drive. my problem is MP4 files wont work. It would play for 3 seconds then stop. Now by accident I tried to play AVI files and it streamed flawlessly for an hour without problems. any other who experience this?

What happens if you play those MP4 via regular HDD?
I dont use NAS but in my case, hit & miss and MP4, WMV, MOV, FLV via PCH-A200/210 - some would play well, some would play without sound, some would not play at all.

I think you have to mask the entire sticky back with a new top layer. Spray paint it black.

Discovered something new last night.
I got a new WD My Passport 3TB and began copying for watching on an A210. When I reached a certain usage level (over 1TB), many of the files copied there on would not play (Could Not Play! message) on the A210 but when I transferred the same files on a WD Passport 2TB, they played well. So it was not a file problem I thought but perhaps an issue with the 3TB Passport.
Experiment 2: I tried playing the WD My Passport 3TB through the PC via VLC - no problem at all for all files
Experiment 3: I tried playing the WD My Passport 3TB on an A300 - no problem din....What? So the A210 may have issues on a 3TB My Passport after filling it up with data beyond 1TB but the A300 is fully compatible? What am I missing? Tried chkdsk and all sorts of disk maintenance tools. Haven't been able to solve the A210 issue - and I thought the A210 is the better (more stable) workhorse than the A300. Anyways, buti nalang meron ako pareho.

Discovered something new last night.
I got a new WD My Passport 3TB and began copying for watching on an A210. When I reached a certain usage level (over 1TB), many of the files copied there on would not play (Could Not Play! message) on the A210 but when I transferred the same files on a WD Passport 2TB, they played well. So it was not a file problem I thought but perhaps an issue with the 3TB Passport.
Experiment 2: I tried playing the WD My Passport 3TB through the PC via VLC - no problem at all for all files
Experiment 3: I tried playing the WD My Passport 3TB on an A300 - no problem din....What? So the A210 may have issues on a 3TB My Passport after filling it up with data beyond 1TB but the A300 is fully compatible? What am I missing? Tried chkdsk and all sorts of disk maintenance tools. meron din kasi akong a200 dati ganun din nangyari kaya binenta ko
so far ok ang egreat hanggang 5tb, di ko pa nasubukan ang 8tb

Probably not "fully" supported. Like I wrote, the 1st 1TB or so of data copied to the My Passport 3TB all played well on the A210. The ensuing copied files beyond approx. 1TB are the problematic ones .
Then a21 does not support GpT if that's the case.

Actually I don't recall if I have had this kind of issue with an internal 3TB on a dock or even with the My Book 3TB pero tinatamad naman akong i-test yung mga yon because convenient gamitin ang portables. So parang gusto kong ibato yung My Passport na 3TB, not the A210 or the A300. ;D ;D
This is my 1st portable na 3TB.
