The most natural sounding fullrange I've ever heard is the Alnico fullrange speakers. Most people think that fullrange is only for Jazz, Blues and can never go rock and roll or Metal. It depends on the brand of fullrange speaker and its specs. Also, it depends on your cabinet design. Your speaker cabinet builder must also have lots of experience in speaker cabinet tuning.
So I am sharing this video of my Alnico 8" fullrange on Aperiodic Design Cabinet (Omega Alnico 8 XRS inspired with down firing flared port) modified by A Audio - Anthony. I trusted to use Muse DT50A tripath amp, for I find the TK2050 chip very good and compatible with my speaker set up.

The HI and MID were very warm and natural. The BASS REGION was full, detailed natural. It has no bass extension that a ferrite magnet has. In reality, bass drum doesn't have too much bass extension. Everything was manipulated in the recording to add some life in the music by using reverberation and others.
I said, Alnico Fullrange for Adults only. Because, when I was younger, I love speakers that rattles our windows, shakes the wall and roof. I realized that when you are getting mature, you want to hear your music deeply. You are going to love music not for how loud your system can play it but rather, on how the artists play their music well. You will love music for understanding the details, lyrics and its meaning. :)
Note: Pls use quality headphone or computer speakers.

i am one among the appreciators of FR. my staple being the Fostex FE207E in double-horns, the johnblue JB3 and Aaudio FR (mine is called "Lunchbox").
i recently had a working gig as TechD for a series of concerts over the span of a week and a half. being at the venues for about 8hours a day hearing the i-dunno-how-many-thousands-of-watts array speakers and thundering bass enclosures, i was curious how i would react to listening to FRs again.
when i fired up my system back home i was relieved. it is true that bass extensions with FRs do not shake up the room, but true musical bass and realistic bass extensions, along with clear mids and highs are the essential elements in a truthful appreciation of any type of music.

I totally agree to what you've said! ive been to car audio, and spl matters a lot, but since im getting old, my music preference also matures same with the choices for audio gears. Alnico FR kicks a$$ !!! the presentation of music is more natural compared to speakers with crossovers. well, maybe its about preference, but Damn!!!! alnico FR rocks!!!! ::) ::) ::) ::)

ALNICO FR is for Adults only and it really ROCKS...I grew up in Olongapo kung saan nakilala ng husto ang galing ng Pinoy Band pagdating sa Rock Music. Palakasan ng sound set-up sa mga bawat bahay na mapuntahan mo before. I remember a Rock n Roll Hall that plays music till morning with big, loud speaker on top of the building. Ang sarap ng Buhay gapo nong araw. I remember music jamming with the Friction Band, Brown Sugar, Sampaguita, Mike Hanapol, Gary Perez, The Jerk, Split Endz, Boy Adan, Arnel Pineda, Freddie Aguilar, Maria Capra, Joey Pepe Smith and a lot more. I become tired of listening to loud music with loud Bass and Highs and found peace with my FR Alnico. I was really skeptical before about the FR Alnico. But I have to admit the FR alnico is for adults only. I found the true meaning and proper way of listening to music sa FR alnico. It will truly envelopes you inside the music. I remember a friend who become DEAF at the age of 18 for listening too much music with too much BASS and Treble. Na damage yong Eardrum nya. So, If you love music and your eardrum go for FR Alnico.

Yan na! Lumabas na ang sentimiyento ni Jorge. Yes, Olongapo was the place of all the nice sound audio gears during those times 70's -80's, i think. Sabi nga nila, yung Bose na pang disco na ang lupit ng gapang sa Olongapo lang meron nun. Malulupit ang audio gears ng mga Bars doon. Puro High End na pang out door talaga.
Thanks Jorge for the effort of getting me a cheap alnico FR. Sulit talaga esp. ngayon na na enjoy natin at na experience ang experience ni Sidny with his quite expensive Audio Nirvana Alnico 8. Buti nabigyan tayo ng pagkakataon magkaroon ng parang Alnico 8 ni Sidny. :D

The right amp for your Merrils. Mang hiram ka ng Muse DT50a...Merrils have low sensitivity though they have low wattage. You must use a good amp that will give 50watts 8ohms power, at least. Then you decide after hearing those. You can visit me anytime bro with your Zigma Merills. :)

You can only get some alnico FR sa may DAU pampanga. But you have to test the speaker first. They are all 2nd hand but some are in good shape.

Alnico fullrange/speaker is famous for being natural and transparent. What you heard was a natural sound reproduction of Alnico fullrange from a recording effects of cd recording. Pag too much echo means the room is not acoustically treated. Pag tama lang, na parang mic reverberation sa recording studio, that's natural. Pag walang reverberation na inilabas ang speaker kahit mahina lang, means iyong speaker di ganun ka transparent. Di kasi puwede mawala ang reverberation sa recording. Yan ang nagbibigay buhay sa music. :)
Iyong ibang speaker designer pinapatay nila iyang natural reverberation. Kaya parang dry makinig o walang buhay sa ganung speaker set up. Others prefer that. But me, I stick with the original recording mix kahit panget pa pagka record. :)

yung built in mic lang ng hp mini notebuk ko yung gamit dyan, pangalwa, walang acoustic treatment yung kwarto ko, SPEAKER? definitely the speaker! transparent kasi talaga ang alnico Fullrange! hehehe!

If only naka alnico ka na FR. Marahil hindi mo ibenta and you will grow old with it. With the Fostex FE207e pwede mo ipagawa kay Brader A yan into HB8 with addition of the super tweet and HB xover at ikaw lang mayroon noon. ;D Another option with the Fostex FE207e is to built a double bass enclosure design kung saan talaga sya nababagay. Isip-isip Brader. ;D ;D

hindi naman po. although ang listening set-up ko kadalasan obtuse triangle. mas mahaba distansya nila apart kaysa distansya ko sa kanila, at sa few sessions ko with these oks lang kahit di naka toe-in.

sinunod kopo advice nyo on the JB3... it was indeed running underpowered by the 6L6 PP. but instead of getting a tripath amp, i got one of sir vhinx's vintage SS, namely the fisher CA-800 100-watt integrated.
and wow! eka nga: love is sweeter the second time around. sindak nako dati pa sa JB3, pero nung isalang ko sa fisher, umabot kami ng 12 o'clock volume, bass up, treble up, and loudness on and the JB3 was singing.
sa gulat ni sir vhinx, who is an admitted basshead, sabi nya iwan ko na daw sa bahay nya yung JB3.
this is one speaker pair i will grow old with... if i do not die young, hehe

Di compatible sa volts bro. 25v kasi DC Caps volts. Yung 63volts ng Evox Rifa PEH 169 was too much. Kaya nagpalit ako ng mas magandang quality na bridge diode. But decided to use the stock Panasonic FC (4700uf x2) 9400uf 25v. I learned my lesson very well by trial and error. :)

sinunod kopo advice nyo on the JB3... it was indeed running underpowered by the 6L6 PP. but instead of getting a tripath amp, i got one of sir vhinx's vintage SS, namely the fisher CA-800 100-watt integrated.
and wow! eka nga: love is sweeter the second time around. sindak nako dati pa sa JB3, pero nung isalang ko sa fisher, umabot kami ng 12 o'clock volume, bass up, treble up, and loudness on and the JB3 was singing.
sa gulat ni sir vhinx, who is an admitted basshead, sabi nya iwan ko na daw sa bahay nya yung JB3.
this is one speaker pair i will grow old with... if i do not die young, hehe
Yup, Its true that Im really amazed of that BB3 "the Little Giant" small BS speaker mo bro... How come that 3" speaker can drive with my Fisher amp at half attenuator setting without any distortion heared. even that we go outside to take our vitamins and minerals ay kala mo big speaker yung tumutunog at ramdam pa natin yung bass sa sinalang natin "Teach me how to doggy". :D ;D ;D "Two Thumbs UP" for your speaker bro.
Btw, Parang gusto ko na sirain pananampalataya ko na hindi ako gagamit ng fullrange speaker, nagpipigil pa ako at inaawat ko pa sarili ko na buksan yung kahon ng Super 8" Nirvana... :)

My initial observations were the ff: More natural sounding without any sibilance. It also improves my mid and lower bass frequencies. Very clean and yet oganic sounding. More lively soundstage. :)

Maganda yong voight pipes design. But the simple the enclosure the better for alnico FR. Only Aaudio can do that for now. Affordable enclosure with superb quality.

Correct. Basta maganda quality ng copper ok talag SQ. Walang character...meaning transparent. :)

I saw these Royal Copenhagen Drivers mounted in vintage floorstander speaker system, 4 drivers per box---> total of 8 drivers...connected in series parallel connection. I think these drivers came from it :D...
a friend got them and sold them pair by pair as i know.

SET amp? nice!!! ganda nyang project mo bro!! pero I think mas maganda ang hybrid na mas may power than mp5. pero im sure napakaganda na nyan tumunog with mp5! tapos medyo i-separate mo pa yung speakers ng mas malayo, around 8 feet apart, para mas may marinig ka pang ibang details tsaka mas malawak na soundstage! ;D im sure you are enjoying it already, try mo lang mag experiment sa placement. ::)

Im lucky to have the Royal copenhagen alnico 8 FR and share my 1 pair to Monreq. I did my research on it and was really surprised. It really came from the peerless heritage but it was limited and sold only in Denmark. :)

Just type in sa google search FOSTEX and from there you will find a lot of enclosure design for your FR. Look for the FE2o7 enclosure. ;D

Yes it's comparable to Fostex yong aaudio FR in the Ferrite magnet category. My folded voight enclosure cost me 6K and im using my German Alnico FR. But still you have to tune it yourself by adding some dampings to get the sound that you like. The folded voight has good bass extension and highs but not to open in the mid section. ;D

One thing I noticed with quality Full range Alnico driver with high sensitivity. Kahit anong low wattage amplifier ang gamitin mo ma pa tube or solid state amp the FR alnico will sing with mucho and you will know how good your amp is........ ;)

I realized it's time to switch to real HD Audio and later use a NOS External DAC. I am not satisfied with the laptop audio output compared to a real HD media player to play mp3 and flac files for my music. I noticed big differences in details, soundstage and attack, even without an external DAC. I also upgraded the power capacitors of Kaiboer H1055 media player with 4700uf 25v Panasonic FC, bypassed some Vishay MKP 1837 and Aerovox .0047uf oil caps in order to have a better sound quality. (The video quality also improved, though my focus is on audio quality).

Did you noticed the rawness, details and attack of an mp3 file format using an HD Media player? Obviously, using a good headphone, you will noticed that the sound quality was quite harsh. Because I haven't used an external NOS DAC yet. However, the overall sound quality is better than using laptop or pc. The sound quality is more organic using HD Media player alone. The music files went directly to the HD Media player without going to any software like i tunes and the like. So, it's pure. I am expecting better SQ when I use an external NOS DAC. :)

Hello again! I have a Bose Companion 2 built in amp that I converted and modified. Here are the pictures...

The amp has already 10,000uf 25v DC power cap. I bypassed the DC Power cap with Vishay MKP 1837 .01uf 63v with an additional 2200uf 63v Evox Rifa PEH 169 (2pcs. but later make it 1 piece) and replaced the input cap with an oil cap.
The sound quality better than other tripath or solid state amp, as per test.

Di naman sa hindi type. It so happened lang na may ibang alternative to have better SQ. Kapag naka external NOS DAC na ako doon talaga maririnig ang mas better SQ nitong HD Audio set up natin. Sa ngayon, natuwa lang ako mag upload ng video. Nagulat kasi ako sa simple tweak pero ganda ng outcome.
Btw bro, sori OT, padalhan kita delivery charge via Air 21 kung sino in charge sa Adcom GCA 510 na sira tranny. May tranny na ako dito na torroidal pang 50 watts rms at 8 ohms set up dati. Pasensiya na. Kasi kinukumusta ako ni Sani. Thanks.

I don't suggest bi amping (mono per channel in fullrange) wala masyado epekto. Tirahin mo na lang power supply para mas maganda ang kakalabasan. Buti pang bumili ka ng tranny type na power supply to supply the tripath. Then, use real good power capacitors...:)

I have 2 pairs of Full range speaker but I will try to use it with a passive pre-amp. Eyeing for the lightspeed pre-amp or Mingda. The HOTROD alone is excellent already ;D It's the only tripath chip (ta-2020-020 gold pin) that I really appreciate the SQ from top to bottom and with more space for improvement and that is why I asked Mon to modify it to the max and he did it. Sorry Brader Mon but I have to post it for others to see your talent. ;D

You can get a very good sounding set-up on a very simple and low cost audio gears. Ayaw ko munang magsalita ng tapos. But for now, It's the best set-up I have that I prefer over my other gears. ;D

Pag lutang ang HF may kulang sa configuration ng Power caps mo... lagyan mo ng 2uf MKP caps bypass sa power caps. Anyways, all the 4 caps are wired in parallel. Kaya you can bypass it any of the 4 caps there. Basta parallel ang kabit,k? Wag ka din gagamit ng silver speaker cable and interconnect. Dapat hi quality copper lang. ;)

Best Passive Pre amp for Tripath. You will never worry about clipping, that can destroy the tripath chip via input signal. It is simply neutral and will preserve the recording of the source going to your power amp or dual mono SMSL SA 36a.

initial impression? kanina ko pa lang naikabit eh, pero sa pandinig ko eh halos parehas lang sya ng stock, mas makapal lang ang mids. kaso di pa na burn in yan, im sure it wil get better after 100hrs. na experience ko na kasi to when i upgraded my mp5 before. im 99% sure it will be a lot better than the stock after burn in!

mundorf mcap is a good upgrade for replacing tweeter caps tapos bypass ng vishay mkp1837!!! na try ko na to!!! affordable with good results, matagal lang ang burn in!!!

Hi sidney, parang gusto kong subukan ito, whats a reasonably priced cap na pwedeng paglaruan and is available locally? also have you tried powering your T AMPS? with SLA Batts? or LIPO batts? I was wondering lang which upgrade renders better results...
I'm running my T AMPS currently with LIPO and SLA batts and i'm extremely happy with how they sound, i wonder lang baka mas gumanda pa lalo sound with these tweaks.

Sharing the tweak of Monreq with the smsl by putting ROE power caps. Since the input caps is already of high quality no need for me to changed the input caps. With the ROE DC caps you could hear a big changes sa sound quality of the smsl. Last night was a great night of T-amp comparison using my friend voodoo speaker cable and I.C, PSP1 as CD player and FR alnico together with an expensive T-amp TK-2050 and my HOTROD smsl TA-2020-020. At the end the cheapest set-up was the favorite The TA-2020-020. Again It's really proper matching of gears.

bro mura lang ang mundorf mcaps 630v. its much reasonable compared to auricaps, matagal lang talaga ang burn in! never tried using batteries pa., another nice modification would be replacement of dc power caps, madaming available na panasonic fm locally, very low esr plus bypass of polypropelene kagaya ng ginawa sa t-amp ni soungarden(courtesy of monreq) i will be doing the same thing pero mas maliit na power caps ang ilagay ko. replacing the power caps renders the most improvement.

As per Monreq you can get a quality passive pre-amp From Rene Revo of Hyperaudio at a very good price. Sa kanya ako magpapagawa very soon. Gusto ko rin sana yong Lightspeed Pre-amp ni JD labs pero wala na sa budget ko yon for my humble set-up. ;D ;D

Hope ok lang if I share my latest fr creation. No need for more introduction on this drivers, pinasikat na ni Ramon ang mga ito. I wanted an OB for a long time so when I got the chance to get a pair of these AN Super 8s, i thought, these will be a good project for one. I haven't seen ANs in OB yet.
I've done a lot of adjustments before I got the sound I want. I added wings at the back to increase the mid bass pero kulang pa rin. So, I decided to tinker on my preamp as well. I increased the values of the Mundorf caps on the output signal path from 0.47uf to 0.82uf. Likewise, I added another output with Solen 1.0uf caps. Now I have 2 flavors to choose from - 0.82uf for more a detailed presentation and 1.0uf for a wider soundstage. I love both. These also comes handy in a bi-amp configuration.

Since these are OBs, it was very difficult to optimize their placement. Took me 3 nights to finally get it right. I also added a pair of up-firing horn tweeters for background ambient highs. These add air and texture to the sound. Anyway, they are now fully tuned and I'm enjoying every bit of them. Compared to my previous horn build, I'll say, I love these more than the former. The sound is very close to a "live" performance. Nakakakilabot paminsan.
The front will be finished in 2-tone veneer, making it look like a 1.5" solid piece of hardwood and the back in piano gloss black. These were supposedly for the WS DIY Challenge, but, after testing them with a passive crossover, I found that a SET amp will have a hard time powering them up. Sasablay lang kami ni tukayong tonyt. I will build something similar to these for the event, but, with more efficient vintage drivers.

sir, you might want to try audio nirvana neodymium series, its the most detailed audio nirvana and the most efficient as well, 97db out side the box and approximately 100db+ with box. i hope you will also try using a single pair of any audio nirvana drivers for a pure fullrange set up, without any bass driver or tweeters or cross overs. im sure you will ask "why?" para naman matuto kami sa box design mo, kasi sa totoo lang eh di ko kayang gumaya dyan sa project mo ngayon, technically and maybe financially! hehehe! my wallet prefers a simpler set up without any crossover. pero kung mura lang naman yang ganyan .... aba! eh pwede din!!! bwahahahaha!!!!

Thanks to all who appreciated the design. I've always been fascinated with OBs and, finally, after making one, everything that's been said about them is true. My design really needs a fairly sized room. They are 6 feet from my back wall and 4 feet from my side walls. But, OBs with large baffles will need lesser space coz you have to place them close to the corners so you can generate more bass. But, still, you might need bigger drivers to get decent bass.
For a single amp setup, this the passive crossover Mang Rolly and I collaborated on. Actually, it can be used for single or bi-amp setup. These will eliminate the use of an electronic crossover which is more expensive.

The trannies actually are just modified inductors to cut signal loss. One for the woofer at 125hz down and another for the fr, upwards naman. The crossovers are huge, weighing about 10 lbs each. An attenuator is also installed for flexibility in tuning them with the drivers. I still need to do a lot of tweaking to get a seamless integration of both drivers.
I'll post pics again once these are finished.

I'd this similar to decware gizmo? This is used to optimize FR drivers it would eliminate the midrange shout and will also enhance the LF and HF to make it more sound balanced..

The Resurrected Sony 4" full-range driver.
I experimented on these drivers for a long time. I came up with a few variants for it, TL bookshelf, the Zigmahornet and the Horizigma. The latest one is the best. I used almost all the tweaks I know on baffle making and driver modifications on this one.

This is the plastic version of the Sony fr. It has a wider bandwidth than the paper coned version because of the whizzer cone. Still, I found it lacking in the high frequencies. Solution: stiffen the whizzer cone by applying a mixture of white glue and water over it. Adding a phase plug (hand-carved hardwood) will make it even sound better. I also damped the basket braces of the frame using blu-tack.

The cabinet measures 36" tall. It has a 6 foot folded pipe, a foot longer than on the Zigmahornet. This extended the bass down to 40hz. Maybe even lower. Like in my last previous builds, I also installed diffusers behind the driver.

Experimenting really helps. At least with Sony FRange, many people who love natural music but with a tight budget will go for this. Dayton DTA 100a, Dayton DTA 1, SMSL SA 36a, SMSL SA S1, Topping TP10 and TP20 are some of the good sounding tripath to match this kind of speakers. Jazz, Ballad, opera..instrumental and acoustic session music are good on this kind of speakers.

The sound of these speakers improved a lot after the finish. It's more balanced now. I hooked up my 12in woofers and it's now really fullrange. Kumpleto na talaga. Pwede na pang-disco. hehehe

This is a Hiwell 8" fr from China in a TQWT. These are huge: 10 x 17.5 x 46 (with pedestal). Initial testing was ok but needed some tweaking. Parang medyo veiled ang sound. I'll be testing them tomorrow with the new mods (diffractor/diffuser) in place. Will post review soon.

Revive ko lang 'tong thread na ito, hindi kasi ako pwedeng magpost sa Audio Nirvana thread e (next time na kapag may Audio Nirvana full range na rin ako hehe).
Royal Coppenhagen 8" Full Range speaker, paired with APPJ mini tube amp (same as MiniWatt, rebadged name lang).

@ Sir RXV for sure sweet sounding yan fullrange speaker mo.. Try mo lagyan ng super tweeter to support yung high frequency ng FR speaker mo..

Yes very sweet sounding 'tong royal coppenhagen, it's really designed for relaxation and long listening sessions.
And yes, balak ko rin magexperiment ng supertweeters to extend the highs :)
Nagkaroon na kami ni sir Remington ng listening session along with his AN Super 8, it literally took us hours of listening pleasure, hindi namin namalayan na ang tagal na pala naming nagjajamming session :)

it was indeed a very engaging and very nice listening session/semi shoot out between this two very nice sounding FR speakers. We really heard the difference in terms of sound delivery between the two and how they perform in different genres of music. Overall it was a very satisfying jamming session. Thanks sir RXV for the opportunity to hear your royal copenhagen, musical fidelity dac and EL84 tube amp.Sweeeeeeeeet! Til' next time...

I'd like to share photos of my DIY dual 12" Bozak open baffle speakers. The drivers were made in mid 60s pa siguro.

The Bozaks are aided by a pair of horn tweeters from Klipsch. Outstanding sound details. Lampaso ang aking Tannoys at Boston Acoustics. ;D
