Title: Android / Google Media Players
Post by: jackryan on Apr 07, 2013 at 06:57 PM
There's the full blown HTPV's, there are a bunch of *proprietary* NMT players --- I presume with onslaught of newer Android based players, we should have a separate thread for them.

What Android based media player do you have and what do you like best about it?

My first Android based network media player is a HiMedia Q5 and so far I am enjoying it than my other players...

highlights:

1. reads tons of titles quickly
2. viewing mkv files is a breeze
3. has a slider so quickly zero-in to the scene that I want to view
4. can work with external drives: 4tb, 3tb, 2tb, 1.5tb and 1tb without problems
5. small form factor

downside:

1. runs very warmly
2. cannot see my hard drives in Mediasonic 8bay or 4bay models
3. documentation is sparse and needs lots of internet searching to find answers about the unit

I wonder if there is a better Android player out there in the market that fixes the downside above

I also am very interested in the HiMedia Q5 or Q10... but since my drives are all in Mediasonic bays... the inability to see individual drives is a big issue for me.

Hope they fix that problem.

I used a workaround. I can see all drives via windows file sharing from my PC running Win7 ultimate. These works for all 1tb, 1.5tb, 2tb, 3tb and 4tb external drives either from the mediasonic 1x4bay, 1x4bay raid and 1x8bay and 7x WD 3tb external drives.

The unit boots fast and can list the file directories very fast!

Quite happy now!!!

madali lang pala workaround. all you need is a PC.  ;D

yup a fileserver running wintel thru samba/win net share or maybe a unix one via nfs  ;D

not bad, since now, i installed the VLC streamer and can also stream into iOS devices... neat

but going back to the Android / Google Media Player, in this case a Hi-Media Q5, I've simplified my set-up in the main HT room set-up and this is my current fave renderer.

Would like to duplicate it in two other rooms using the same file server library approach :)

I have a Measy X5, which is a dual-OS NMT (Linux and Android).

One thing about Android is that it loads excruciatingly slow (over 1 minute), compared to my erstwhile Linux-based NMT (Astone AP-300), which booted in less than 10 seconds.

meantime, i got a new PCH C200 for another setup to maximize my ISO / BDMV (2D) collection :)

This Android Media Player seems to be a better choice. XBMC HD Decoding... Android Jellybean... and the price is very reasonable.

Reviews seem good too.

Pls help guys.

Not for me but for close family friends. They dont need a PCH-A like mine but should buy a reliable and reasonably priced player mainly for 720p or 1080p MKVs  (they are currently using laptops).

I dont know whether to recommend this, or the R6S or the Measy X5, or an AC Ryan or a Mede8er...basta up to 5.9K lang for them.  Our friends are purely plug and watch so no need for techy setttings - my contents will take care of their enjoyment.    ;D

Thanks!

PS. When are you coming home again? Need a refill... ;)

Thanks Bro!   Any possible issues to consider regarding the HiMedia Q5 (unsupported files, unsupported audiostream, unsupported subtitles, hanging, boot-up time, stability of playback, stuttering, for instance)?   Anyway, puro mkv lang naman pinapanood nila (and 1 externally connected HDD at a time), no networking needs at all, so if no problem whatsoever with the type of 1080p I have, it should be OK.  Thanks!

I'd be there at the end of July.    See you!

if mkv playback, so far soo good... the unit gets warm pero so far it survived running day and night without a problem on a weekend ;)

the only thing fun using it is the very friendly and functional "slider"... very responsive... also boot up and shutdown is also in a flast even for network access...

hope this helps... see you in a month or so...

Noted with thanks Bro!

Just 2 more questions because, in my opinion, you are a most valid "control"/reference - hehehe

1.  Which of your non-Android media players do you like the best (pls exclude PCH)?
2.  Do you plan to sell any of your media player collections?  Hehehe.  Actually yung isang friend ko ay umaasang his new TV with built-in media player would suffice (daw) - but Im not sure if those built-in players can smoothly decode high bitrate 1080ps.

I've shifted to Android player for now... also, got two new ones incoming next week with my kids back from their US vacation.

The xtreamer ones seems okay as long as you don't go for the exotic mkv formats... the other ones are the Measy players and also the WD branded ones...

On the other hand, the newer LED panels are now coming with their better built-in player... this is true for the well known brands and even the lesser known China sourced brands like QUBE...

While scouting for IP security camers and NVR, I saw one of their QUBE 42" LED that has a built-in Android based player... for just php 22k at their Gilmore showroom.

Title: Re: Android / Google Media Players

I don't find any marked difference other than it boots faster and can parse even locally attached storage via the usb ports in fast mode too...

Tony, are your 2 incoming players also model Q5 or other Android media player makes just like the one posted by nbc?

For the sake of my friend, I'm really hoping the built-in media players of TVs are fully capable of 1080p mkv playback (including high bitrates) and support all sorts of audiostreams.  There were some posts about TVs having issues with DTS diba?

Regards!

Busy with other stuff but did some basic test when I received the items and have the following ranking preference to-date:

1) Himedia Q5 - works out of the box; media player slider works pretty damn well; downside, runs very warm

2) G-Midnight MX2 - very nice XBMC implementation; remote is also nice; media player slider doesn't work well

3) Minix Neo X5 - runs the least warm; remote is a joke!

Hi Toys4Geeks!  3 questions pls.

1. Q5 or R6S for my Wife's good friend?  Ikaw naman pareho ang source.  ;)

2. Meron bang stock ng Q5 or R6S?  Wife's friend has definitely got the stuff to play already.  He just needs a reliable and stable standalone player.

3.  Can the Androids play Full Blurays kahit in Simple BD Mode with support for HD Audio?  Doesnt need 3D BD though.

Thanks!

@Clondalkin

Hi Toys4Geeks!  3 questions pls.

1. Q5 or R6S for my Wife's good friend?  Ikaw naman pareho ang source

t4g:if simple UI, go Q5 (cons:no 3D lang, Q5-ii wala pa word if production release na)
if PQ is important for large displays, the R6S is tad better sharper corners IMO

2. Meron bang stock ng Q5 or R6S?  Wife's friend has definitely got the stuff to play already.  He just needs a reliable and stable standalone player.

t4g:if decided na friend mo to buy, while unit enroute, bigyan muna natin ng loaner unit upon payment, that way watch mode na siya :)

3.  Can the Androids play Full Blurays kahit in Simple BD Mode with support for HD Audio?  Doesnt need 3D BD though.

t4g:it can play full BD pero observe ko pag forwards medjo stutter but once playing ok na siya. i'll try out BD HD audio later , will move my Q10 para makita natin.

the Realtek 1186 claim linux android pero crappy implementation, wont even connect to google play , PQ seems better in Realtek over the A9 based android 4.x(himedia) I still miss  sigma, yan ang nakakamiss

Thanks!

Thanks Toys4Geeks!

I'm actually leaning towards the R6S because Comet and Anya like it...and I also like the way the R300 PQ looked.  Kaso, nalilito ako kay Jack Ryan, kay nbc and sa yo about the Androids.  hehehe.

Will advise my friend about your valuable info and suggested arrangements.  Thanks thanks!
