Title: What's your analog setup?
Post by: dts-HD 3D on Aug 18, 2014 at 08:27 PM
Kindly list below brand and model of your turntable, tone arm, cart, phono preamp, cables, accessories or even mods or upgrades that you did. It doesn't matter if you have a budget or an ultra hi-end setup, if you acquired them brand new or pre-loved. I think what's important here is that you enjoy every minute listening to it and that you are happy with the matching. And with that matching, who knows maybe we can get some points and ideas out of others setup configuration and components.  :)

mid priced mc carts eh nag start 10k up. sadenon 110, 103r. yung kna doc endrik at sir larry, modified body na yun kya pricey na. sa ortofon, salsa , quintet at mc series. sa benz, gold & silver! at madami pa pong iba.

anyway my analog setup:

Hi Luther, my analog setup is as follows:

Nottingham Spacedeck table with a Blue Horizon record mat
Nottingham 9" CF Ace Spacearm
Lyra Kleos MC cart
Artemis Labs PL-1 tubed phono preamp

The PL-1 is isolated by Symposium's Rollerblock Series 2 in dual configuration and Svelte Plus platform.  It uses a Voodoo Mirage power cable and a Purist Audio Design Aqueous 20th Anniversary interconnect.

Ah so that's the Artemis PL-1 & Lyra Kleos . . I'm not interested w/ analog yet that time kaya hindi ko natandaan. But I'm sure you mentioned it.

Ang gaganda ng setup . . . hope to see some more.

Question:
1. If we disregard the cart, meron ba sound signature ang turntable depending on the brand? Let's say brand A is mabilis tumunog or brand B is ma-bass, etc.

2. Why is it that as they climb a model higher the platter gets thicker? Maybe not for all brands but I notice this most of the time.

Post by: mykel18 on Aug 19, 2014 at 01:52 PM
Answer for #2 is damping and isolation to lower the noise floor. Interested din ako sa sagot sa #1

I still have the Lenco Jen.  Needs a trip to the casa for some maintenance though :).  Made the mistake of transporting it sans padding or cushioning. I plan to use it for an MM setup when I have the time and space.

Luther, sound also depends on the type of TT...belt drive, direct drive, idler...also the tonearm is a big factor, even the internal wiring, headshell used, etc... + of course your phonostage

In the end, it depends on what you want, what your budget can accommodate and what "house sound" you prefer...
Title: Re: What's your analog setup?
Post by: lithium_deuteride on Aug 19, 2014 at 04:02 PM
Agree with Jen.  Look more to carts and phono preamp (tubed or SS) to influence your sound.  For the TT, just get the basics right.  Just remember the sole function of a TT is provide a quiet and stable platform and proper geometry for the arm and cart, to allow the stylus movement to perfectly replicate the peaks and valleys of the record groove with as little externally influenced vibration as possible.

Along that thinking a heavy platter is good since mass damps vibration.  Belts are good too since they isolate the vibrating motor somewhat.  A non-resonant plinth is very important - do the knock test while  playing a song. Of course the motor should provide a smooth torque with unwavering rpm.  I'd also consider a TT that is designed to accept a non-stock arms.

Ok so its al about the damping and isolation that gives the table a distinct character. Sabagay ganun talaga the lower the noise floor the pricier it gets. Its always all about the noise floor when it comes to audio isn't it?
Medyo klaro na pag dating sa turntable which one to prioritize at kung ano muna pwede tipirin. Many thanks.

How about when it comes to cart let's say cost no object, just the sound in general, what can I expect from an MM or MC? So far most of you guys prefer using MC are there advantages/disadvantages?
Title: Re: What's your analog setup?
Post by: Superman on Aug 20, 2014 at 01:17 AM
MC in general digs out more of the details vs MM. But that doesn't mean MM is inferior vs MC. It's about taste and preference.

You can say that.  Mechanical noises (especially on turntables) and electrical ones too in the form of distortion caused by harmonics. That's why audio gear manfacturers give you the THD figure to illustrate how well they've managed the harmful effects of harmonics.

Short legged, flat-chested and ??? . .

I think nakarinig na ko ng AVID setup from one of the EBs before kila streetsmart not sure lang if that's the II SP.

mas maganda talaga bossing. detalyado. kya ang mahal din nga ng presyo. sabi nga ni tas eh, you should treat your cart as a hardware and not a consumable. and it should be directly proportional sa analog rig mo. wala pa akong nakita na bumili ng six figure TT na sinabitan lang ng m447g o ortofon concord.

Ok so, sa details talaga ang difference from the mm.
Siguro kung ganun kamahal ang ttable dapat nasa top of the line cart na ang gamitin para you can extract the last bit and get the most out of the system. Mahal pala talaga but it makes sense kasi cart naman ang in direct contact sa vinyl.

Not necessarily. Example is the Denon DL-103R. For me this is a "universal" cart which can be paired with low priced and hogh priced TTs. You can get this at a sub-P15K price level. Huwag lang talaga Avid TT tapos Shure M44-7 kasi you won't be able to maximize your set-up. Tsaka w/ Analog itbis also all about matching --> TT, Arm, Cables, Cart, Internal Arm Cabling, Headshell Cable, etc.

I am sure you'll be one of Avid's proud owner soon! :P
Title: Re: What's your analog setup?

I'm sure all owners are proud of their Avids bro, sadly I'm way out of their league. Hopefully pag may dumating na blessings why not.  ^-^

But there are far more expensive carts than denon. I mean if compared to the top of the line denon dl-s1 w/c is just under $1000, do you think the improvement from dl-103 is justifiable? Lets say if used w/ a $1500 table w/ tonearm?
Title: Re: What's your analog setup?
Post by: Superman on Aug 22, 2014 at 12:05 AM
Can't really say bro. Sometimes it's matching. Can recommend a nice MC cart though that can play all genres w/gusto: Benz Glider MC. If you're in a budget, the Benz MC Gold is also good!

Yep been reading about benz micro and they're really good for the price daw.

The Denon DL-103R is pretty much "universal". Tried it out w/ direct drive TTs, Rega P3-24, SL-1200mk5, VPI HW-19, Lenco L-75. Benz and Ortofon carts are very much universal as well, meaning they've bern used in different TTs and they match well...

Sir would you know if there's a workaround for the DL-110 para magamit sa mga metal platters? Cos I have a friend who ordered the same cart abroad only to find out na hindi pala pwede sa steel platter nya. Sayang kasi he's selling it now for a very low price.

Thick record mat made of vinyl. Like Oracle's groove isolator.
Ok sir thanks, will tell him to try that.

hehe don't know where to start, anu ba magandang brand na affordable bro? :)

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
nyak! ;D

Baka makatulong ito sa gusto mag analog  Phono FAQ from Van den Hul   :) ;)

1 Q: Why are there 2 different types of phono cartridges: Moving Magnet (M.M.) and Moving Coil (M.C.) ?
A: This has partly to do with the principle of signal generation and partly with the cost of production.
Theoretically it does not make a big difference whether you move the magnet and hold the coil or vice versa. The difference in sound by the way is on the plus for the Moving Coil systems, because with the M.C. principle the manner in which the magnetic field variation interacts with the coil is more correct. Also the mechanical stability of the cantilever and stylus is in most cases better. This produces better sonic results.Especially the channel separation is higher with M.C. cartridges. Also the mechanical resonance frequency is higher so intermodulation distortion is lower.
There is one disadvantage with M.C. systems: the output is lower, so you need an extra step-up device like a transformer or a typical M.C. amplifier.

2 Q: Which of the 2 phono systems, M.M. or M.C. has a longer expected lifespan ?
A: The construction of the M.M. is, related to the lower price, always somewhat more industrial. So expected lifetime is normally shorter.
Also by reason of the generally lower reproduction quality, the quality of the stylus is limited. So stylus wear is usually higher. This is in advantage of M.C. systems. The application of aluminum for the cantilever also limits the total lifespan. Despite this, with care a M.M. system can give you years of pleasure. And when you buy one, at the same time already
buy your spare replacement stylus unit. You never know what the manufacturer will do in the future.

3 Q: Which of the two, M.M. or M.C., will sound better ?
A: In practically al cases, the M.C. sounds better.Especially owing to the construction, the dynamics, the detail and the resolution are better. Also in the field of channel separation the M.C. systems score higher. So a higher delight for the ears.

4 Q: What parts of a M.M. are most critical ?
A: Always be careful with the aluminum cantilever. The little aluminum tube with its thin walls is weak and can be destroyed by a light mechanical pulse. Also give the stylus enough attention. Stylus wear happens as a result of the mechanical tracking process. And never solder your tiny tone arm leads tot the mounting pins: At the same time you desolder the internally connected coil wires or break the fixing in the rear panel due to exposure to heat. Coil systems of M.M. cartridges are made of copper wire with a diameter of around 20 micron (0.02 mm) or even less. A human hair is about 80 micron. Just to give you an idea.

5 Q: What parts of a M.C. cartridge are most critical ?
A: Again the stylus, the cantilever and the suspension. The stylus can have all kind of shapes. The mounting or fixing of the stylus on the cantilever can be damaged by the application of cleaning liquids contaminated with oil . This softens the epoxy glue so the tip will fall of within 6 - 12 months. Cleaning the cantilever with water can damage the aluminum. It causes corrosion when the pH factor is not around 7 (= neutral). When the cleaning liquid contains oil, the oil will creep along the cantilever and will finally reach the rubber suspension along the coil. This is the beginning of the end of the damping properties of the rubber suspension pad. So NEVER use any oil containing cleaning liquid .
Don’t forget: A clean record always sound better than a dirty one. So keep your records as clean as possible.
