The Q looks very much like an O, and they are pitting it directly against OLED. They filed for the QLED trademark last year for this technology.

Samsung leverages Nanosys Quantum Dot tech for their SUHD/QLED TVs. Ironically, Samsung also owns QD Vision. QD Vision is the company that supplies Quantum Dot technology to other companies like Sony, Philips, TCL, etc.

Samsung/QD Vision is slowly developing what is expected to be the successor of OLED. It is called QD-LED (not to be confused with Samsung's QLED TVs). Rumors say that it is about 5 years away to commercial production.

What happened to the Samsung AMOLED?

They are still the biggest OLED supplier for handhelds. The iPhone 8 is rumored to feature Samsung's AMOLED screen. Samsung stopped making OLED TV panels since they supposedly had difficulty ramping-up production yields on large panels.

Maybe they feel that they can stretch the current tech long enough (SUHD, QLED, etc.) until they can roll out QD-LED.

I don't think Samsung is changing its plan unless OLED starts flying off the shelves:
