Title: Cabling from source ->TV->receiver question

Recently purchased a new tv with optical audio out. And   it changed my whole set up.

I used to set up like this:
Sources (BD, DVD, Games) HDMI ---> Reciever -----> HDMI TV i used mulitple HDMi cables to connect all my sources to the receiver then 1 HDMI to the TV.

But now I set up Like this:
Sources (BD, DVD, Games) HDMI ----> TV-----Toslink----> receiver
*if ill just be listening to music, a separate CD player is attached to the Reciever via analog

Which should sound better?
Or is it the same?
reciever is 5.1 only

sound quality should be the same...

you also ensure that your TV can decode/pass-through 5.1ch Dolby Digital/DTS, right?  Otherwise, try to change back your connection:

Sources (BD, DVD, Games) HDMI ----> receiver -----HDMI ARC ----> TV

In my experience, I can hear audio quality differences between hdmi and toslink in my setup. I prefer the toslink as it gives relaxing audio, while hdmi can get noisy and is good with movies.

As per google : The biggest difference is that HDMI can pass higher-resolution audio, including the formats found on Blu-ray: Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. These formats can't get transmitted across optical.
