Title: DVD's/VCD's  in Chinatown
Post by: Centurion Obama on Mar 03, 2002 at 05:17 PM
I went to Chinatown today to buy original VCD's of Hong Kong movies, and I was delighted by what I saw.  I found 3 stores, selling original VCDs and VHS's from Hong Kong.  The first one was one called Anjieson and the other two were Mei-Ah VCD Shop.

The first store I stepped into was Angieson, where I was delightfully greeted by rows upon rows of VCDs and VHS's.  And wouldn't you know it, the first movie I saw, was Shaolin Soccer.  But I surreptiously looked through the other VCDs trying to look at what else I wanted, but I went back to Shaolin Soccer.  But I thought about it for awhile, and I said, somebody else would have Shaolin Soccer by now, so should just get another Stephen Chow movie.  And so I asked the guy, if he had other movies by the same director, and what do ya know, the guy couldn't speak a word of English.  So I had to to do some creative thinking, and I said the name Stephen Chow, and he lit up and showed me a whole row of Stephen Chow movies, and right in the middle was the God of Cookery.  My prized find! ;D  He charged me 170 pesos for it.  And I was very happy.

And then I left and went to the other stores, which was Mei-Ah VCD shops.  I first went to the small one, which is nearer to Angieson, and fortunately some people there could speak English.  And then I went to the second one, which is larger and looks even more professional.  And more people there could speak English.  I wasn't able to ask about Korean and  other Southeast Asian movies though.  Anyway I really enjoyed my trip to Chinatown. :)

Are you a fan of HK movies too? I loved Stephen Chow when it comes to comedy. Though they're more popular with action movies in the likes of Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat, Aaron Kwok, Ekin Cheng, etc. But nobody beats Jackie Chan. :)

Last month, wifey & I bought an original three-volume DVD of Chinese children songs at Mei-Ah VCD Shop (the better looking one) for P250 each. :o  CHEAP eh? (Sugod mga kapatid!!!! ;D)  Don't know if it's the list price since Benz talked/haggled with the store keeper in Fookien. ???

I recommend these DVDs for those raising kids to learn Chinese/Mandarin.

Although, I just don't know if all the other original DVD titles in the shop are at P250, the store is highly-recommended for fans of HK flicks. :)

Hi Bartmaniac,

Would you happen to know the contact number for mei-ah?

The "Shaolin Soccer" DVDs have long been out of stock as the Mei-Ah guy told us.  Though the VCD comes by often, the stocks are easily sold within days/week.  I think the "Shaolin Soccer" VCD costs around P350.

I also saw a lot of concert DVDs of Canto-Pop artists (Andy Lao, Jackie Cheung). And the "encyclopedic" ;D VCD box-sets of traditional Chinese movie epics.

xage, here it is:

Mei-Ah (big/AstroVision-like shop) - 733.3198
Mei-Ah (small stall, Ongpin-style) - 733.4538

But I suggest you visit the stores personally.  My guess is that you'll hardly understand each other thru the phone because of the language barrier.  I haven't heard the store keepers/owners speak a single Tagalog and only very little English.

Little wonder. Chow's "Shaolin Soccer" is truly a masterpiece. The story, comedy, and special effects are A-1. I first saw "Shaolin Soccer" from Blitzkrieg. Hindi ko pa kilala si Stephen Chow then so was not interested. And the last Chinese movie I saw in entirety was back in 1988.

One day, I was browsing through Star Chinese Movie Channel and chanced upon a funny story about an arrogant chef who fell from grace and rose back up with humility. It turned out it was a Stephen Chow starrer called "God of Cookery." I was hooked!

When I was in HK, I bought 8 Stephen Chow DVDs and "Shaolin Soccer" was one of them. And man, it was so good that even my 4 year old son liked it very much in spite of his lack of understanding of Chinese.

Looking forward for more...

Thanks Bart. Will be expecting the scans. As for titles, I'm not that well-versed with the new Chinese educational titles in DVD. Had some in VHS before but already sold them to my sister.

I'm getting some of your recommendations to help my wife and kid learn Mandarin. Mahirap kasi matuto ng Chinese kung walang naririnig sa bahay.

Thanks for the leads, Bruce_Wayne.  We'll visit the place soon. ;D

By the way we also started showing Toy Story 1 & 2 to our daughter with the language option set to Chinese/Mandarin.  She's not complaining. ;D  Actually, she'll just as teary-eyed watching/hearing Jessie's drama scene with the Chinese version of the song "When She Loved Me." :'(

Hi to everyone,

I happened to stop by at mey-ah over the weekend.

Fortunately they still have stocks for Shaolin Soccer in VCD.

So for those who are interested, they still have around three!

BTW, For the members in this thread How can I find Anjieson & Mei-Ah small? are this small stalls only?

xage, the small Mei-ah and Anjieson are on the other side of Ongpin street.  These two stores are relatively small and old compared to the one you have been.   It's less than a minute walk  from the 'classy' Mei-Ah (left side if facing/walking towards Divisoria).  Better ask the Mei-Ah people to tell you where it is (it's just 'pointing' distance from the bigger shop).

So what/how many titles have you bought, xage?

Hi BestBuy88,

Thank you for the voluntary assistance.

Baka puwede naman humingi pa sa iyo ng favor?

Possible ba mag-request sa Angieson ng Original Shaolin Soccer DVDs stocks for sale? I guess not only me is looking for this. I think this would help Angiesons sale as well.

Highly appreciate your feedback on this thanks. ;D

I will go to anjieson thsi afternoon and i will post the reply regarding status of Shaolin Soccer.

There is a new VCD there, KOREAN MOVIE titled MEMENTO MORI. Its highly rated at www.imdb.com I am inclined to buy it. Korean movies are really getting better, especially some of their offbeat romantic movies.

Title: out of stock shaolin
Post by: bestbuy88 on Mar 24, 2002 at 06:37 AM
i went to anjieson (as well as the other chinese vcd store) and they have ran out of stock of shaolin soccer.

however, a new shipment, hoping to be out BEFORE thursday holy week, will include new stocks of shaolin soccer.

i told the guy to inform us HOW MUCH will the DVD version of shaolin soccer cost BEFORE he brings them in. He said he will check it out. I will post it when I got his reply. Further, I insisted that we want the ORIGINAL LEGITIMATE VERSION in DVD format. Accdg to the guy kasi, meron "pirated". What i told him was we preferred the legit version as if in local counterpart, nabili sa Astrovision.

They will be closed on Holy Friday. They might close early on Thursday (by 330pm baka raw close na sila, depending on flow of people). Normal operations on Saturday.

thats all i can share.

Yeah, I'd KILL to have an original widescreen copy of Shaolin Soccer myself!!  I'm thinking of going to Chinatown myself really soon to see if I can find one. I'm not really picky. It doesn't have to be sealed or brand new just as long as it works and all features can be played.  If anyone finds an extra copy over there or anywhere else, please PM me or email me:
[email protected]

You see, since Miramax has bought the rights to this film, they're going to change the title, choppin out some parts and replacing some of the music with hip hop. At least that's what I've been hearing. I would like to have a legit copy of the original before it's massacred forever. Thanks!

Make sure lang na it has English Subtitles.

One advise, check the label for details.

I have this already but on VHS, JC & Hsu Chi.. US version lang nga

Mas OK ang HK version complete version ito compare to US

I have been exchanging emails recently with someone from HKFlix.com (http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/aid.015530/qx/home.htm) to find more about the DVDs I was referring in my above post.

He was very helpful even going to the extent of  forwarding my query to their distibutors around Asia.  Got a reply from him just now saying that thier supplier have informed him that the said DVDs are bootleg from Mainland China.

Still I got a bit confused since there seems to be no source of the original version where one could buy.  I don't know the status of video piracy in Mainland China but it got me thinking.  Do video pirates in China produce bootleg copies from scratch.  If so, how can it be considered bootleg then?

Anyway, just thought of informing those who may have been intersted with the DVDs mentioned. ;)

I bought four Chinese/ HK dvds. And will planning to buy more. But, I have to make sure if I'm getting an original DVDs before buying some more. I know, there's a lot of members here that are knowledgable with regards to HK films. Here's the scenario. I bought the dvds from Ebay and it cost $6.99 each. The label says 2 are made by Mei Ah Laser Disc Co. and the other 2 are made by Universe Laser and Video Co. I just want to know if these Company's releases are legit. And also, is the price fair enough? Thanks!

Hi Barrid,

These are legit Chinese DVD distributors.

HKFLIX.com is the best site you could doublecheck these distributed films

Johnny, most of the VCDs in Chinatown have subtitles, I would assume that the VCDs in SM also have subtitles, baka hindi lang alam nung sales lady... if you can read chinese, you can just look at the back, makikita mo kung may english or not... some recent released VCDs have english text with "English Subtitles" written na...

Hi, Are tehre any stores here in manila where I can buy Chinese DVDs?  THe ones in Ongpin have mostly VCDs and only a handful of DVDs.  I was trying to get a copy of Jackie Chan's classic Drunken Master I and II, and Superfly, and Police Story I- IV.  But they don't have it in DVD.

Thanks!

Chinista, I think Anjieson only have the VCD of The Eye(as of yesterday) and it still doesn't have english subtitles(I'm not sure about the language if Mandarin or Cantonese).

Hi tsen tsai,

You can pick up Jackie Chan flicks on DVD (Drunken Master included) from Astrovision.  It has Chinese and English audio, as well as subtitles in English and Chinese.

Hi, do you have a list of those movies?  I only saw Drunken Master I and II in Astrovision.  And they soooo highhhhhh....  any cheaper sources(Originals)?

Astrovision is one of the cheaper sources of R3 DVDs.  You could go for R1s or R2s if you really need the titles, but these also cost more.  If you're shopping on a tight budget, you might want to post in the Marketplace.  There may be some members with used copies willing to sell the titles you're looking for.

Good luck! Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

In my case,  I came from Vito Cruz along Taft Ave. and I took an FX going to Sta. Cruz. I got off near the Prudential Bank bldg. In Sta, Cruz and just walked through Escolta all the way to Ongpin! :o I think there's a better way but it was a fun and interesting adventure anyway!

Where in Ortigas are you exactly? :)

Sakay ka ng QUiapo ng FX sa likod ng Megamall(the side there there is Superbowl).  Baba ka ng Recto(just before the FX crosses recto).  Sakay ka ng Jeep or FX na Divisoria.  Go down at Alonzo.  Then tawid ka to the other side of Recto(corner Alonzo).  tapos diretsuhin mo lang ang Alonzo(may palengke doon lalagpas ka pa doon).  The first intersection there is Soler St. lagpas ka pa doon.  The next intersection is Ongpin St.  Just before Ongpin St, sa left side mo, nandun ang Anjieson.  halata naman kasi sa lob kita agad mga VCDs niya.  When you reach Ongpin, turn left naman and go straight.  Sa Left side din nandun ang Mei-Ah.  Haalata din yun kasi may mga VCDs din naka dispay.

hope this helps

No matter where you are, before getting to Ongpin, you should first know how to get to Recto LRT.

To get to LRT Recto:
For people coming from Quezon City, ride a Jeep or FX at Quezon Ave. going to Quiapo. Get down at Morayta. Morayta is just after UST. There's a big Mcdonalds with a waiting shed. Take the overpass and walk a little bit. Nearby is the jeepney "station" going to Divisoria. Ride the Divisoria jeep which will pass thru Recto LRT.

For those with access to LRT (Not MRT):
Just ride the LRT and get down at Doroteo Jose Station and walk a little bit towards Recto. You can either walk or ride a Divisoria jeep.

Now that everybody's at LRT Recto, you should get to T Alonzo. This street is the third street from LRT. From LRT if you walk, you'll pass T. Mapua Steet (this is the Funeraria Paz St.), Then a small street (i don't know the name), then you'll see a market palengke named Aranque. The street beside Aranque is T. Alonzo. Turn left here and walk a couple of blocks. The first store you'll see from this direction is Anjieson VCD Store. You can buy lots of VCDs and some DVDs here. They also have Audio cds and Posters. Walking further, you'll now reach ongpin. If you turn right, you'll encounter Mei Ah VCD Store and another Anjieson Store (which is managed by the sister of that guy in the first Anjieson Store). Going left, there's another Mei Ah VCD Store.

Now an alternate way to get to Ongpin is to ride the LRT and get off at Carriedo Station. You should then make your way towards the Sta Cruz Rotunda. This is where Sta. Cruz Curch is also located. Ongpin st. is the street with that Filipino-Chinese Friendship Arch. It's directy opposite the church. You won't miss it. From here, the first store you'll see is Mei Ah to your right. Further is another Mei AH, this time to your left, then a couple of stores away, Anjieson. You can ask the owner there to show you to their T Alonzo Store.

That's it. We go to Ongpin regularly during Saturdays or Sundays. You can join us if you want so i can refer you to the store owners there.

thanks for all the help guys!

@ DL1,

thanks for the help...i'll probably take the MRT -> LRT Route... then make a choice between Recto and Carriedo Station... but i still need to do some scouting reports regarding which route is safer...
Title: Re:DVD's/VCD's  in Chinatown
Post by: DL1 on Mar 26, 2003 at 04:19 PM
hi alaeh! as to safety.... i don't think there's much difference but i'd settle for the carriedo route because the areas you pass by are very open and highly populated. For the Dorotero Jose route actually the only "alanganin" portion is when you're walking from the Station to Recto which is actually a short distance (50meters??) Medyo madilim nang knti kse dun and closed space because its under the LRT. But i've been passing thru these routes my whole life so far no untoward incidents naman. just don't go there all dressed up and glamorous  8)

To be honest, I don't think I can give specific titles because I'm not really sure which ones have better subtitles. Maybe there are others here who can. :)
However, they say some Mei-ah released DVD's have bad subtitles along with some editions of Wong Kar Wai's films (R3). My Mei-Ah VCD of The Story of Qui Jou is an example. The subtitles appear to quickly to be read properly.

There are lots of movies naman with good subtitles. But i bought some movies with little subtitles, The Longest Night and A Hero Never Dies.

These are relatively new movies kase. Most of the old HK movies have good subtitles since HK movies were required by law to have subtitles back when HK was still a British colony.

generally, chinese titles are available on all the video stores in ongpin (duh!) so titles like visible secret and horror hotline are available.  Has anyone tried the new video shops at ongpin?  Anyway, some japanese and korean titles will be available depending if the movie was shown to Chinese moviegoers.  So battle royale and bichunmoo are available.  Also, try memorizing the chinese symbols for "english subtitles" since most titles have them.

My dad visited some shops to check on some stuff (i.e. telenovelas). One store that my dad visited asked him if he was Chinese.  The owner explained that he doesn't have biases with non-chinese buyers but that the tv series on sale doesnt have any english subs.

Stormriders is based on the Chinese comicbook. Great action and sfx!

I was also able to get Hero for P200. Both have English Subtitles.

VCD? NOT THE VCD. I GOT THE DVD! P300 ONLY. I ALSO HAVE THE VCD THAT SOMEONE GOT FOR ME AT HMV HK.
BUT IT'S A SO-SO COPY. WIDESCREEN IN A WAY THAT THE FRAMING IS TOO TIGHT-THE SCREEN IS A NARROW STRIP.

THE DVD HAS INCREDIBLE PICTURE QUALITY.
GREAT FOR A MOVIE WITH PLENTY OF SPECIAL EFFECTS.
GO GET YOUR COPY OR ORDER FROM AH-MEI, OR WAS THAT MEI-AH?

thanks. Its Mei-ah pala.  Is that those legit dvd ones or the bootleg ones?  Anyway, one of my sources, hivizone.com is looking for resellers.  Some of their legit dvds are cheap (US$5.50) Wish they have a branch here in the Philippines.  Though their dvds are mostly HK/Taiwan/China productions, they have other great Asian titles.  Bought Bichunmoo from them too.

Sorry for late reply. Anyway, I hope I got the legit one.
Video and audio's great. I think DVDs from Taiwan and HK (The HK orig versions) are cheap. An officemate of mine used to know someone who sells DVDs from Taiwan. P180 lang, but I don't think that person is selling pa rin. I ordered some stuff like Iron Monkey and Project A2 but that was months ago and my officemate resigned so wala na akong contact.

Try ordering from that store in Chinatown. I think they also have MUSA.
