You can also try amx preamp (ConTodo), very nice sounding, fully featured. price point, i'd say "best buy/bang for the buck". At 14k to 15k, i'd say it's really worth it. :D  you may want to ask the following: akyatbundok, hans and france, john5479 on their feedback on this. :D

Try the Tono preamp of wiredstate.com

Try the Rotel amp with the Tono pre-amp first before buying. My set-up, Tono prea-amp+Rotel RB03 amp sounds good BUT the volume level can only be set at 9:00 o'clock max. The amp will be overdriven past that mark.

Advise needed...

I have a HT setup and interested/thinking of getting a tube preamp; presently receiver pre outs(L,R&C) are connected to amps -(375mV for 50W into 8ohms,20Kohms impendance - dont know about this figures just took if from the amps  manual). Dont have separate set of speaker for audio only setup. I'm eyeing TONO preamp but dont know if it's ok to match it with my amps...and how to connect it using the same set of speaker for both audio and HT operation ? ...other entry level tube preamp ? I'm a newbee on tubes...

TIA

Before I sold both, I would pair an AMX pre amp with an ONKYO stero power amp. The power amp was about 150 watts. It sounded very nice. The pre amp had high gain so I would listen around 8 o clock max. That was the only issue i had with it since i had to be very careful with the volume.

this is the input sensitivity of your amp, and i can tell you that with such sensitivity you really do not need a preamp.

with the current sources, no need for preamp! ;D

thanks sir for the input already got the Rotel RC-03 preamp, sound better than using the AV receiver as preamp though I got some minor problem with volume control - 9' oclock is alredy very loud. Tried Rothwell inline attenuator it did gives me volume control but lost dynamics.

Thinking of going passive preamp later...

You can try the ff:

for those using the preamp in the CD in of your Receiver or Integ amp (like me), you might want to try this:

1. connect the Left out of your CD, directly to the CD in of your recvr

2. connect the Right out of your CD to the Right In of the WS preamp

3. connect the Right out of the WS preamp to the Right CD In of the recvr

4. turn WS preamp volume to zero

5. turn recvr volume to regular listening level

6. play CD which you know singer is in the middle (acoustic vocals is good)

7. notice that the singer will be coming way from the left (because right volume is zero in the preamp)

8. slowly turn up the volume on the WS preamp

9. notice the singer is now moving towards the center..

10. when it reaches the center - stop turning the WS knob, remember location of white indicator

11. turn up the WS volume some more - voice will now be coming from the right (WS output is now greater than CD output)

12. turn down WS volume till the voice is centered once again

13. disconnect left input from cd to amp

14. connect to left in of WS preamp

15. connect Left out of WS to left in of your recvr

You have now achieved the following:
CD out = WS out

* this puts to rest the worry that you might damage your recvr by overloading the input signal being received through the CD in from the WS preamp
(note: this worry may or may not be justified, but I feel better now)

now that you have identified the reference volume on your preamp - another tweak to make getting that setting easier everytime:

1. carefully without turning the knob, loosen the screw holding the plastic knob in place

2. reinsert the plastic knob in such a way that the white indicator is at the 12 o'clock position

3. tighten the screw

now everytime you want to set the preamp to the ref volume - just set the knob to 12 o'clock  ;D

Pro di ba me tube buffer ka na?

hehe, napakacomplicated naman nyan, ganda kasi nung tubey sound with the buffer, iniisip ko pag nag tube preamp mas gaganda pa, or baka mas ok pag nag tube amp na lang ako, tnx bumblebee

doc,

the easiest way to achieve your goal is to get a Tube Amp.

I think a tube buffer is actually a tube preamp w/o volume control and gain.

bumblebee,

I think if it doesn't have a volume control then it's not a preamp, even if it has gain or not.  ;D

just busting your chops my friend.  ;D ;D ;D

 ;D ;D ;D

seriously, you are right. an example would be the Decware Unity Gain Preamp and is a buffer with a volume control.

but of course when experts on technical terms read this, we may both be wrong.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'm getting confused here??? So what is technically the definition of pre-amps? Unity gain or gain with volume control. How about those passive ones?

Post by: bumblebee on Sep 15, 2006 at 03:43 PM
All of the above hehehe

For me, it's that thing you put before the amp.

 ;D ;D ;D ;D

kaya dapat ang tawag sa power amp ay "postamp", kasi after siya ng preamp eh.  ;D ;D ;D
