Title: Philipine Cinema's most memorable portrayals
Post by: RMN on Jul 21, 2004 at 03:14 PM
Okay, I have a strong feeling a threat exists but what the heck...

My partial list, from the few I've seen, and in random order:

--Lolita Rodriguez as Koala in Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang
--Vic Silayan as the deranged father/retired cop in Kisapmata
--Nora Aunor in Himala
--Nora Aunor in Ina ka ng Anak Mo (though I have yet to see the film in length)
--Charo Santos in Itim
--Bembol Roco in Maynila sa Kuko
--Philip Salvador in Kapit sa Patalim

More to come. I want to add Lorna Tolentino but I can't recall her films.

Good list. Personally, I liked Gardo's Pepe far more than Cesar's smirking Rizal. Night and day.

Ara Mina over Nora in Tatlong Taong? I don't know.  ::) Unless the list isn't in descending order.

I've seen Laro sa Baga. Not a big fan, but at least Carlos Morales can act; same with Angel and Monique Wilson. Ara Mina's looks like a dressed de leche ready for roasting. That doesn't speak well for the list's credibility. From what you tell me, you've got better taste than your friends. You should protest more.

I can't seem to find the time to make up an acting list--life's too short.

Saw Ara Mina in Kahapon May Dalawang Bata. Yes, it could be her best, no I still didn't like her. She's a terrible actress, even worse than Sharon Cuneta.
Title: Re: Philipine Cinema's most memorable portrayals
Post by: Noel_Vera on Jun 01, 2007 at 11:42 PM
And nothing from Irma Adlawan? She has more talent than half the actresses working today, in the Philippines OR in Hollywood.

Maricel in Abandonada--well, it's a good script, less than inspired directing, but she's really best in Bernal's Hinugot sa Langit and that Carlitos film, the Heiress adaptation.

Yeah, Ara Mina's best work is in Minsan Pa.

I haven't seen many of her films (so as my friends), but I heard she's good in ICU bed #7...

Sharon Cuneta could be consider as a worst actress, but I really lover her performance there in Pasan and in Babangon ako't dudurugin kita. But if I remember her performance in Lilian Velez Story, my GOD, my head aches!

Irma's terrific in North Diversion Road. And her theater work is great--anything she does with Tanghalang Pilipino is worth seeing.

And she's hot, too. Not obvious when you first glance at her, but in a full length performance, especially onstage--Ara Mina pales in comparison. I don't care for pork.

Maya Valdez in Manila By Night, and Bulaklak sa City Jail. Helen Gamboa and Irma Adlawan in Bagong Bayani. Albert Martinez in Rizal sa Dapitan. Albert, Ruby Moreno and Michelle Aldana in Segurista. Elizabeth Oropesa in Tastulok. Mark Anthony Fernandez in Biyaheng Langit and Jesus Rebolusyunaryo. Ronnie Lazaro in Jesus too.

Joel Torre, Yul Servo, Gloria Diaz, Art Acuna and Pricilla Almeda--actually the entire cast--of Batang West Side. Raymond Bagatsing in one of the greatest performances of the '90s, in Kriminal ng Baryo Concepcion. Ronnie Lazaro in Heremias.

In the 90s, I'd say the two best Filipino performances were Raymond in Kriminal, and Helen in Bagong Bayani.

Yeah, Maya Valdez again in BULAKLAK SA CITY JAIL. If there is one person you should hate in the movie that's her. Also the entire cast of BATANG WEST SIDE are worth seeing.

I haven't seen Batang West Side. Albert Martinez was pretty good in Rizal sa Dapitan but I hate the movie.

Ah well. Rizal sa Dapitan isn't a crowd pleaser (tho I like it very much, myself; think it's worlds better than Marilou's Rizal, and Martinez a far more convincing Rizal than Montano)--Tikoy went with Pete Lacaba's more politically oriented 'Escape from Dapitan' direction. Ten percent of my script is what's left--if you want to see the Rizal movie I had in mind, it's O'Hara's Sisa.

for a Rizal movie, I think my Fave was Jose Rizal (1998) but close second was Sisa.

Batang West Side was 5 hrs. long ryt?  ???

Four hours fifty something minutes, if I remember right.

Of the Rizal films, I'd rate O'Hara's Sisa first, then Bayaning Third World,  then (well I can't be objective about it, I admit) Tikoy's Rizal sa Dapitan.

Unless we include adaptations of Rizal's novels, in which case, Gerry de Leon's El Filibusterismo first, O'Hara's Sisa second, Bayaning Third World third, Gerry de Leon's Noli Me Tangere fourth, and then Rizal sa Dapitan. I wish Ramon Estella's version was still around.

Mitch Valdes (Dr. Jo) in Oro Plata Mata
Fides Cuyugan-Asencio (Inday) in Oro Plata Mata
Anita Linda (?) in Bakit Bughaw ang Langit
Gigi Duenas (Nimia) in Himala
Ina Raymundo (?) in Tuhog

Havent seen Kriminal ng Baryo Concepcion. Many say Raymond Bagatsing gave a great performance in that film. I wish I know where I can get a copy of that movie.
