Title: DVDs for Kids
Post by: bayonic on Jul 23, 2004 at 05:34 PM
Hello there ,
One of the reasons I am collecting DVDs is the chance of spending Quality  Time with my kids ... also with DVDs, I know exactly what they're watching.

I would like to know more family-oriented or kids-oriented DVD titles to watch with the family.

Here is a short-list of what my kids like :

1. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

2. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

3. Stuart Little

4. the Home Alone series

5. Sound Of Music

6. Grease < dunno why :) >

Thanks for your suggestions.

Some other titles your kids might like:

Hope this helps. Good luck! :)

titles i have acquired for my 4-yrs old nephew are:

superman cartoon collection
neverending story
the hobbit
spy kids 3d
willy wonka and the chocolate factory
princess bride
annie
harry potter 1 and 2

pero to be honest, the only thing he enjoyed was superman so i wasn't really successful in my attempt.

From my observation, my pamangkins (don't have kids yet either) favorites are:

Looney Tunes: Back In Action
Toy Story
Finding Nemo
Beauty and the Beast (Disney)
Ice Age
Monsters, Inc.
Jurassic Park series
X-Men series and Spider-Man(for the nephews)
Barbie cartoons (for the nieces - I dunno if they have this on dvd but my nieces have theirs on VCD)

I can kind of understand the kids liking Grease 'coz I saw this as a kid and remember enjoying it immensely  8)

My son used to watch Grease 2 (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00008Z45B.01.TZZZZZZZ.jpg) a lot and even listens to the CD all the time. I even have a recording of him singing a song from that movie, on my cellphone.  But he has outgrown that now.  Other than the usual, true-blue favorites like Nemo, Toy Story and Monsters Inc, he also likes watching the ff (sometimes over and over):

(http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000067J1M.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg)  (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0800130952.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg) (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005AR3G.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg) (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00003CX9Q.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg)

And we let him watch Harry Potter when he was younger but he only recently developed a liking for the series and now cannot wait for Prisoner of A on DVD.  He enjoys the Home Alone series also.

He also is into Friends (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005YU81.01.TZZZZZZZ.jpg) a whole lot. Probably because of my influence. ;D He once watched Season 1 to 4 ng tuloy-tuloy. Which had me reaching for the remote sometimes because there are topics there a 6-year old isn't supposed to know yet. (Fast Forward! Fast Forward!). And I get ask some sensitive questions like "What's a lesbian?". :-\

But his all-time favorite DVD is this:

I don't know how many times he has watched this already.

I tried introducing him to Tim Burton's Batman (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0790729652.01.TZZZZZZZ.jpg) but the dark mood of the film didn't impress him yet. He's not yet into superheroes like this, Supe and Spidey. Maybe later, in 3-4 years.

I want him to see Homeward Bound (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6304711913.01.TZZZZZZZ.jpg) but we don't have it on DVD yet. Hope to catch it on cable.

I intend to re-introduce him to The Sound of Music because the last time he saw it was when he was 3 and if I ask him about it now, he doesn't remember much.

-Do you know that exposing your children to TV at a young age would be a factor for ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)?  Go slow with those videos.  More on the music! ;D

Is there a difference between watching TV and watching DVDs ?
My kids love to watch their favorite DVDs over and over and I noticed that they're still rapt with attention everytime. Plus they always watch with subtitles and they like to read along with the dialogue.
But I agree with you too ... they need to spend more time listening to pure music ... and reading books.

I have a nephew (2 years old) who was exposed to Barney videos since birth.  Now he doesn't want to eat without Barney played in front of him.  He doesn't interact well to kids and doesnt talk much.  When in front of the TV playing Barney he is immovable.  His attention cannot be called and his eyes seemed to be glued to the screen.

Isn't Barney evil? ???

Kids will get over Barney when they're  5 or 6 probably. :) Then they're gonna be watching other cartoons or kiddie shows...more evil than Barney. ;D

You could be right.  My son has been watching VHS Disney animation and other feature fantasy films like Batman and Jurassic Park since God knows when.  And he did have attention/hyper problems when he started in school.

Speaking of Kids and too much exposure to TV/DVD/Videos ---- Quite OT but I just wanna share this. One of my best friend has a 3 year old daughter who is soo into Barbie and she loves watching Barbie a lot.....she went through this stage where she refused to be called by her real name and won't respond unless you call her "Barbie"! ;D

At this age, it's still cute and harmless.....but when you really think about it.....grabe ang impact ng TV/Video. ;D

I highly recommend the PIXAR movies, the anime film Spirited Away and of course the Looney Tunes Golden Collection. I think all kids should see those films. Classics.

Willy Wonka and the Cholocate Factory really stuck to my 2 year old kid.  He sometimes sings the umpa lumpa song whenever he's in a singing frenzy!  ;)

My 4-year old nephew naman really enjoyed the lion king. He watches it every morning before he goes to school. The other day he called a viewing session with his friends yet he was like ... uy wag mo hawakan yan... original yan... baka magasgasan... I let him handle his discs by himself and he's ever so careful with it :)

Uhh...no.

Mouse Hunt is debatable but it's harmless fun. But don't rot your kids' brains with cinematic junk food that I cited above.

not sure if its family-oriented but lately my kids can't seem to get enough of Jack Black and School Of Rock .
at least I am grateful because they have shown interest in learning to play musical instruments ....
another big bonus is that they sit down with me while I'm listening to the Doors , LedZep , AC/DC , etc on vinyl :)

other recent favorite :
Chronicles Of Narnia

i'm bowled over by my five year old daughter's imitation of Lucy Pevense's accent :)

My kids enjoy Veggietales.  I like it too because it reinforces a lot of positive values.  It tells Bible stories in a non-preaching and funny way.  :) :)
