You mean they will not produce a Region 3 for this DVD? They would import the Region 1? That's great!!!! Because their production of Disney DVDs are unacceptable. Look what they did to Sleeping Beauty. So, should i cancel my orders at online stores since we will have it here? Please advise. Thanks.

Just to clarify, R3 Disney DVDs are produced by Buena Vista in Singapore. Viva is just the Philippine distributor so they have no control over what version is released in Asia.
But to answer your question, yes, the R1 version will definitely be available locally, though in limited quantities.

I guess when the VRB allowed the entry of the R1 version of Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring last year, it set a precedent. We'll probably be seeing more of these legitimate "exceptions" in the future. As long as they're priced to sell, I think the consumers will be the big winners in the end.

We'll probably be seeing more of these legitimate "exceptions" in the future. As long as they're priced to sell, I think the consumers will be the big winners in the end.

No plans to come out with the gift set unfortunately. Bringing in R1 releases is a bit of a gamble for Viva right now so they're limiting the variants that they're importing.

Sorry, no picture of the cap although Viva showed me a sample. Looked like a typical black cap with Lion King advertising on it. I'm not a cap person though, so maybe I'm not doing it justice. :)
All confirmations have been sent out this morning, but the next batch will be emailed by tonight. As some of you have already noticed, there's a bit of delay in keeping up with the pre-orders. Looks like we really have to invest in an online shopping cart system.

After the release of 'The Lion King' on October 7, 2003, here are the other release dates of the Platinum Collection titles: January 1, 2004 IMAX release and subsequent DVD release of 'Aladdin'. Then the Platinum Editions take a two-year vacation to the jungle with 'Bambi' in 2005 and the reissue of 'The Jungle Book' in 2006. 'Cinderella' arrives in 2007, followed by the eagerly anticipated DVD return of 'The Little Mermaid' in 2008. And then the collection rounds out by going to the dogs with 'Lady and The Tramp' in 2009 and '101 Dalmatians' in 2010.

I'm not sure if the cap is imported.
You are still buying from a store for all intents and purposes, namely Astrovision or AstroPlus. In this case, we're taking reservations for them. You still have to physically go to a selected branch, pick-up your copy and pay for it. By preordering online, (1) you get a free Disney Lion King cap; (2) you're automatically entered to win one of two Ultimate X DVDs; and (3) you are assured of a Region 1 DVD before supply runs out, since Viva is bringing in only a limited number of R1 Lion King DVDs. The rest are Region 3.

I was called to an impromptu meeting in Viva today and they explained what happened. The R1 sets arrived last week and have been stuck in a warehouse ever since. The strange thing is, customs allowed the R3 sets through without a problem. Apparently, the officials in charge were actually aware of the difference in value between the 2 versions. "Mainit sa mata yung packaging" was how the the R1 release was described.
The good news (sort of) is that the Amaray-cased R3 sets will be in stores by tomorrow. Retail is the usual P750. I saw them today but couldn't tell from the labels if the features were intact. If you can't wait, you may want to consider this release as an alternative purchase.

So we'll just have to wait for further updates before trooping to Astrovision? ??? I heard there's also a kiddie cap for early buyers tomorrow.

Not really, utena. Not for those two titles, at least. Komikero posted the differences between the two versions of Snow White here (http://www.geocities.com/headlesschicken/snow.html). The only feature that seems to be missing is the disc two guided tour.
Same for Beauty and the Beast. In this thread (http://www.pinoydvd.com/yabbse/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=6622), firewired lists all the features of the R3, and they're almost identical to the R1.
But your observation is true for Sleeping Beauty. The R3 lacks most of the features of the R1. But then again, there's Pinocchio, where the R1 lacks most of the features of the R3... but those features kind of suck, anyway.

It also comes with a cap. It's black, it's a bit tight for my noggin. The front has a colored Young Simba looking mischievous with the words "I Can't Wait..." next to him. The back says "To Be King!" The Right part of the cap has a barely readable "The Lion King 2-Disc Special Edition" Logo, with text next to it going "Own it ON ORIGINAL Video & Disney DVD".
The image of Simba isn't anything to write home about. It uses three or four simple flat colors and isn't rendered very well. Hopefully, this isn't the cap that'll be bundled with the R1.

Theatrical and Special Edition versions are intact. Kinda strange, there's no way of picking which version to watch except by going to the languages section. Widescreen is intact :)

It's hard to put everything down here, because a lot of the features overlap in sections. And, trust me, there are a LOT of them here. I'll just give the gist of the disc.
There are two main sections, the journey elements and non-journey elements. The journey elements include STORY, FILM, STAGE, MUSIC, ANIMALS, and the VIRTUAL SAFARI. Clicking on one will bring you to a list of featurettes that can be watched either individually, or as a complete "journey" - except for the VIRTUAL SAFARI, which is basically an interactive tour/game with Timon and Pumbaa as guides.
In the non-Journey elements, you choose among a bunch of continents, and are shown several features (most of them, i believe, can be found in the journey), including galleries.
It's a bit of a mess. With all these features overlapping you can't tell if you've missed one or not. Still, there seems to be a lot to check out.
Please note, I haven't seen the DVDs in their entirety. I'm just basing my findings on the menus, and what little I've seen already. I cannot give assurance that everything I put down here is intact. So far so good, though.

Viva should have brought in the R1s first, had it released by customs and release it to the market. Then after a few weeks, bring in the cheaper version para walang point of comparison yung mga mukhang PPPP sa customs. >:( >:( >:(

Any news on the R1 version of Lion King that's being held by customs ? May pagasa pa ba yon ? Grabe pa naman customs when they are hot on a shipment, pahihirapan ka talaga at hahanapan ng butas >:( so that they can make things harder for you and then force you to make "lagay" para lang malabas yung shipment !
I am not complaining but merely asking if meron new update. I do understand that sometimes things like these happen :)

Bad news guys. Got another update from Viva. Looks like the Customs issue is far from resolved. Best estimate they can give me is next Thursday. Arrgh. Mukhang iniipit talaga.
They were very apologetic. I got the impression that the whole debacle was stressing them out, so I told them to just send me updates over the next several days.

the difference between the r3 and r1 lion king is mainly in the packaging. the r1 comes in a cardboard slipcase like the beauty and the beast r1 & die another day r1. the features are pretty much the same.

diver - hirap talaga mamili. Pricing difference din kasi but the R1 looks really really great with it's packaging. Maiisip mo tuloy, kung yung great packaging for the R1 is enough reason for you not to save the P450 bucks that you save if you buy the R3. ;)

Pero kung gagastos ka na rin lang and you will have to live with your Lion King DVD for a long time why not add 450 para totally satisfied ka na sa product and also if you have the Beauty and the Beast R1 with the same cardboard slipcase it would look really nice kung ganun rin yung Lion King and the other Platinum series that will come out later. Yun yung consideration ko gusto ko pareho sila ng Beaty and the Beast ko. ;D

You're under no obligation to keep your R1 preorder if you'd rather shift to the R3 version. PinoyDVD merely facilitates these promos for distributors and retailers like Astrovision. Just let us know in advance if you'd rather pull out your reservation.

UPDATE: Searched the net, and found this (http://www.totaldvd.net/cgi-bin/dvdreviews.php?reviewid=9980) site, saying the DVD's layer change is at that very spot. Says it's seamless, though, so maybe the R1 has a better transition.

UPDATE: Searched the net, and found this (http://www.totaldvd.net/cgi-bin/dvdreviews.php?reviewid=9980) site, saying the DVD's layer change is at that very spot. Says it's seamless, though, so maybe the R1 has a better transition.
On my R1, there's a slight pause immediately after the song, when Zazu lands on the ground, before Mufasa says "That's very good" and the groundhog pops up from the ground. No apparently missing sound/dialogue from the change.

Got the R3 too. The features are almost same as the R1, so I'd go for the R3. Ever wonder what kind of cap the P1200 R1 copy will look like?
I got the R3 version with bonus cap last Tuesday ( I forgot about the R1 promo here, and when I saw the R3 version at Astro, I thought this was the same as the promo, well, anyway...)
I don't know if anyone else has noticed this. At the end of the additional song "Morning Report" in the Special Edition version, there's a second or two where the voice/sound goes out (and you can see that the characters are supposed to be saying some thing). I suspect this is where the transition from the inserted scene into the original film happens.
Anyone else with this problem?

Got official word from Viva that tomorrow's release is in jeopardy. This time it's a VRB problem regarding the importation of R1 titles. Apparently, Viva's local license only allows for R3 imports hence they're not allowed to sell R1 titles. Something like that. They're holding off on a committed delivery date until they can fix everything. Hopefully that doesn't take too long.

You can try other retailers, too. I saw some in Landmark's audio department.
One feature I didn't find in the R3 is the Making Of featurette of the new "Circle of Life" music video. Unless you're a fan of Disney's newest stars, it's no big loss.

As per update from Viva, they are still committed to delivering Lion King R1 before end of October. No specific date was given though, so your guess is as good as mine.

Just got a text from the Buena Vista head in Viva -- Lion King R1 was finally released by Customs and the VRB yesterday. Viva will definitely be able to start delivering to retail outlets. I'm trying to get a date as to when copies will be available in Astro so standby for updates.

High praises for Viva all-round for this stunning R3 release.. I just found my copy... actually, a friend found it for me... at Cinderella of all places! This is a great R3 package, with a cool 2-disc amaray case and inserts to go with it! I'm very impressed... More value than R1, definitely! Hope we can expect more like this from Viva... esp. with Finding Nemo just around the corner...

just called Astro Robinsons Place Ermita to confirm my order. They said the R1 DVD is already there, pero wala pa ung cap. Kasi di pa raw dini-deliver sa kanila ng VIVA.

Was able to get my copy of Lion King R1 today with the cap pero WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA bat ganoon , the cap that came with the R3 was embroidered yung design ito parang sticker na pinalancha... the design is just like those shirts that you buy with designs that you can't iron otherwise didikit sa iron.
Actually, the girl said walang kasamang cap yung Lion King R1 unlike the R3 so I showed her my preorder email and after she read the email she showed me a cap na lion king pero nde daw kasama yun ng disc talaga pero since nakalagay sa email that it goes with a cap ... eh di she gave me one :) But I told her if iba yung cap for the R1, I'll return the cap that she gave me and have it changed with the rightful cap that goes with the R1 and she said sure ma'am :)

Ang pinagka-iba lang halos ay yung box at matinding sound DTS and THX.

Got my copy in Astro Plus (Podium) with free cap. I agree the cap quality sucks but still, its a freebie, so don't really expect that much.
Based on experience, Astro Plus is more knowledgeable about promos, updated and very accommodating compared to their sister branch in Megamall. Hope the people from Astro takes this as a constructive criticism to improve on their service. Peace man! 8)

Just came from Megamall to get my Lion King copy. Incase you haven't seen it yet the AstroVision branch in Megamall is now AstroPlus. In fairness, I always get my pre-orders from this branch and very accommodating sila and in the contrary yung Podium branch nga ang mabagal service maybe because it's much bigger and relatively undermanned.

At least medyo consolation na pala yung cap na nakuha ko kasi it's not the smooth nylon looking finish that you mentioned.

Has anyone noted the difference between the 5.1 audio mix and the Enhanced Home Theater mix of the Lion King? I haven't thorougly explored this yet but cursory A B comparison revealed there is more rear bass, volume and detail in the Enhanced HT mix than the standard 5.1 mix.

The one I bought seems to work fine. When you say chapter change, do you mean after the scene or after the song? The layer change of the DVD happens right after the song, so there might be something wrong physically with the disc.
Have you tried:

Yun sa akin on that same part, it stops for 1 second tapos tumutuloy. Yun picture nun ay yun nakahiga yun ibon pagkatapos siyang banggain ni simba...right? My friend also had the same problem. :(

A possible explanation:
If you play the extended cut of the film, The disc detours to a separate chapter at the start of the "Morning Report" musical number. It's possible that this segment is on a separate layer. After the number, the disc automatically returns to the main film causing certain players to pause while it "seeks" out the original branching point.
On newer players, this delay is probably less noticeable.

Thoroughly enjoyed this R1 Platinum edition, one of the few. The soundtrack is gorgeous, especially the special home theater mix, the surrounds are very active. Looks like they mastered those channels with greater range like DTS, even on DD, as you can feel the bass from behind. A great showcase DVD.

No, Viva does not press Disney and Fox titles locally. Those discs are imported, the jackets are local, though.
When Disney titles go "on moratorium," that usually just refers to their distribution in the United States. Pinocchio was long on moratorium already (since its 2000 "Gold Edition" R1 release) when it was released on R2 and R3 in a Lowry-remastered "Special Edition" in 2003.

That would depend on whether their copyright agreement with Disney is a per title basis or per piece basis. If it's a per title basis, then Viva could replicate these with their foreign disc replicator partner without Disney knowing about this. But if it's a per disc basis then Viva will have to report the number sold and Disney will know, unless they report it as a lumpsum...
BTW, the disc look imported, similar to previous R3 Disney titles with the Disney logo in the inner rim...

With the scarcity of this in stores, my current guess is: it's leftover stock of the old release they found in their warehouse. Could've been repackaged if there's anything new different about the packaging from the old release.

was able to get a copy yesterday sa Astro MOA. have likewise seen Disney titles put in a box set (toy story, garfield and the likes) ;)

as mentioned by sir ashburndaride, there are copies of this including lion king 2 and 3 at the viva booth near the glorietta 4 cinemas. its priced P450, buy 1 take 1. so, its just coming out as P225@. so, this is really a steal for an OOP title. :o just bought lion king 1 and 2 last saturday. ;)

hello sir vtec3 & devlin_waugh, ask ko lng about the packaging, i mean is there any single page DVD guide inside, or (as usual) wla nanaman like the r3 jungle book? :-\
by the way, i dropped by kanina sa glorieta 4 viva booth near the cinema,dun sa parang food court, but yung trilogy lng yung available,i was looking sana for the single movie lang eh :-\.... or mali yung napuntahan ko? hehehe :D if ever saan po b sa glorieta?

i think you went to the booth at the glorietta food choices sir. the booth that i was able to buy the lion king dvd (not the boxset) was at the floor of the cinema itself. its the same floor as wendys and starbucks. the viva booth is at the right side of the movie ticket counter. nothing inside the case just the two disc :( happy part is that finally was able to buy one after the longest time, sad part is bought it at 350 compared to other members at 299 and some even lower :(
likewise watched the first few minutes of the movie and i am not so happy with the PQ :(

I went to astro there, but ung box set lang yung available so far.
I asked the cashier,for the individual title, she said it'll be eventually available probably next week.
I was about to exit the mall when i remembered may record bar nga pala sa department store.
There i found the Lion i've been hunting since 2005! hahahaha :D
nakatago at the back of other titles, mukang it's the last copy nga eh, but the
Simba's Pride and LK 3 are both available individually though.

You really should not expect Disney's hand-drawn animation titles to have picture qualtiy as sharp as the digitally-animated Pixar features.
