Title: Why is DVD Collecting such a 'Guy' thing?
Post by: electronic70 on Dec 14, 2001 at 07:42 PM
Last night over dinner, I had an animated discussion with my girlfriend on this topic: Why is DVD collecting such a predominantly male hobby?

If you look at the Thread Lady Members??, you'll see that the lady members of pinoydvd make up less than 2% of total members. Why is that??

Granted, more guys (it seems) use computers and surf the web in the Philippines, but I can bet that if you had a survey of all DVD collectors in the Philippines, a great majority would be male.

So why the great disparity? Women watch as much movies as men; I would say they buy as much CDs and books as men.

We came up we a few theories, none of which can fully explain this phenomenon.

It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this subject (any sociologists out there?), especially from the women in our beloved community  :)

I think it's because guys are more into electronic gadgets that women.  The TV room is the place where you can usually find the man of the house (that is if he's not in the bathroom, bedroom or grarage) while the kitchen is traditionally for the women.  Sounds like stereotypes but that is generally the case.  In my observation, it's a big deal for girls if the guy knows how to write good love letters while with most guys, phisical attraction is foremost.  Guys never makes a big deal how great a writer his girl is, just how great she looks :)

Add the fact that pschycological studies say that men are visual beings in contrast to women who are more into reading. More females are into pocketbooks and magazines. I think that's why most magazines are for women.  The only male magazine that got successful here in the Philippines is FHM and that too is more of a 'visual feast' for the man's eyes that a read.

my wife's answer:  men are show-off kasi!! >:(

Lotsa women who love movies are into VHS or VCD collecting, and I would be into VCD as well, if my husband didn't open my eyes to the superior format that is DVD. For me back then, a movie was a movie, and I didn't really care about the picture or sound quality as long as I got to watch it, and had the convenience of watching it in my own home. I guess it's the guys who are pickier about hi-tech stuff like picture resolution and dolby digital and DTS and all. Of course nowadays, I'm more informed and appreciative of DVD's advantages, like its extra features, but I'm still clueless about anything that has to do with home theater hardware.

That's one point raised by my girfriend last night: that guys are into the techy, geeky stuff. But my argument is after everything is set up, all one has to do is buy the DVDs and appreciate them (like buying CDs).

Of course, part of the charm of DVD collecting is to feel the full force of your sub-woofers while you watch Saving Private Ryan; but I think most collectors buy DVDs simply because they love films.

Hmmm . . .

want to know the truth? can u handle the truth?

the truth is that men and women just have different priorities.

with the same amount of money, men would buy gadgets and dvds while women will buy shoes, clothes, and kikay stuff. ;)

that is basically why there are less women buying dvds, there is just not enough money to go around. ;)

Ang mahal kasi eh. It's hard to justify spending so much for a DVD if you don't appreciate the technical advantages anyway. Up till now, I still scout around for bargains to get the cheapest price possible. My rule was to never spend more than $5 to $7 per DVD. And that used to be possible, when more online coupons and gift certificates were free and easy to get. Nowadays, my rule is roughly $10 per DVD, that's why I buy more Region 3 DVDs these days, and hunt for used R1 DVDs at low prices. The occasional online bargains for new R1's are still there but getting harder to find, so sometimes my option is to trade to avoid shelling out cash. Bottomline is, unless there's a bargain, I can't justify spending so much money for a DVD collection (I'd rather buy clothes and shoes and kikay stuff). ;)

my wife already had a laserdisk player...so sa loob ko wow! : te-kee!!! pero when i asked her...
so where's your laserdisk collection ...
her reply was...sorry wala akong laserdisk ???..
she would just rent lang daw ???
not even one!!! ni-isang laserdisk..wala siya
at that point me duda na nga ako na taga planet venus siya. :D

I remember that a week before our wedding, I mentioned to my hubby, "Can we NOT have a TV in the bedroom?". He looked at me with such a horrified expression that I hurriedly said, "okay okay". Baka ma-cancel pa niya ang wedding. :P

;D You don't need a TV. You need a handycam !  ;D  j/k

Going back to the topic....  I agree that we, men, are too technical in everything, well almost.  While women would discuss the highlights in the movie, performance of the screen players, men would go ga-ga on the technology used in special effects, sound quality.  I also agree that women would rather spend on their kikay stuff, hehehe.  That leaves the spending to us, yahoooo.

Just my opinion, though.

Your comment above, DVDiva, reminds me of a recent conversation with my wife.

I was showing off to her the extended pod race scene of Episode 1 in all its Dolby Digital glory. And all she had to say was:

"E anong nadagdag diyan? Wala naman a. May nadagdag ba sa kwento? Mas gumanda ba yung kwento?"  ::)

:D i am just enjoying this thread so much that i could
not stop laughing... i agree with u all!
ang men kasi masyado silang maarte sa mga kagamitan
electronics- hindi sila kontento sa plain tunog at picture
so they go gaga with boooom!, boooom!, booooom! at
bang! bang! bang! at kling! kling! kling!...diyan
napupunta ang time nila sa ka kokonek at diskonek ng
mga wiring... that is really their asset!

ang mga babae- hindi importante sa kanila yan basta gumagana
ang tv,vcr,cd,dvd or any electronics hindi na sila hahanap
pa ng dagdag o kulang...pero kung pang kikay kikay ang
paguusapan? i like that word "kikay"...it is a different
tuloy away ang resulta...

a thing happened to me, my wife and daughter when we were in the video rental shop last night.  It was our very first "Family-Video-Renting-weekend" so we were pretty excited ;D

After choosing 4 discs already, the staff suggested that we borrow another one so that the due date would be 5 days instead of the regular 3 days.  My wife said: "I get to choose" and since I chose 3 out of four already, then I agreed.

She wanted the Jerry Maguire R3 which hasn't got any special features in it >:(  I said, "it has no features in it so the experience would just be the same" since we already caught the movie during its theater run.  She said, "let me just get its VCD copy then, I don't care about the features, I just want to see the movie again" and so to discourage her on renting it, I said: "just add 20 bucks in its rental fee and you already get a pirated copy".

Discussion & selection went on (she's on the VCD section while I'm on the DVDs) In the end, she wanted 'An American President' VCD and since the video shop doesn't have a DVD copy of that movie I had no choice.  In my final effort to discourage her into renting a VCD, I told her, "can we get something we'll watch together?"  She knows that I like the movie but just not inclined in watching it on VCD.

Our discussion probably got pretty intense that another customer in the shop looked at us :-[   My wife finally said: "You choose!"  So, a bit bothered, I looked at the DVD titles again.  I saw one kid flick ("Madeline") among the titles.  I said to wifey: "Would you want this for Kite (our 2 year old daughter)?" Incidentally, while all these were happening, Kite was either: busy asking us to borrow a VHS (we don't have a player in our room) or taking a VHS tape out and away from its case or trying to cry her way for us to buy her munchies.  Imagine the crazy scenario.

So when I asked wifey if she likes the title for our kid, she simply said, "Yes".  I couldn't believe it. That easy?! or she's being sarcastic? I don't want her to feel bad, especially not on our first 'Video Shop family trip', so I asked, "are you sure?"  She said, "Yes, actually (friend's name) recommends that. She said (friend's daughter's name) really likes it :)" So off to the counter we went, drove home and lived happily ever after...

...until the next five days ;D

Yeah, I wonder too... but is it really???

Maybe we are just assuming based on the number of lady members here...

Maybe ladies collect DVDs as much as the guys do but just don't care enough to discuss them especially on the web...

I'm sure marami pa kami girls... but it's just that we'd rather go shopping (I meant window shopping) than sit on a chair and stare on the PC and talk about DVDs and other techy stuff...  ;)

I've picked up the habit of buying DVD's for my girlfriend din and it seems to have worked (pero siyempre mga movies rin na gusto ko panoorin like Notting Hill and Moulin Rouge). But she hasn't gone into buying for them for herself.. or me for that matter.

Same thing with the audio hobby - a very guy thing. Ofcourse there are exceptions, but very few.

I think it has something to do with the observation that guys find so much more pleasure indulging their senses than women do.  Men are said to  enjoy ogling at playboy magz more than women do at playgirl magz, which is better enjoyed by gays.   ;D

jaz my 2 cents: O0

probably because  a girl is more focused on fashion (READ: shoes, make up, bags, dresses, jeans, blouses and the like)

and guys are focused on toys/gadgets  (READ: ht, cars, mobile phones and the like)  ;D

but for me (i'm a girl btw  ;D) i collect them mainly because i simply love revisiting movies that i enjoyed....so my humble vcd collection is now being replaced by dvds  ;D
