Title: Build your own LCD projector
Post by: hertzblaster on Nov 07, 2004 at 01:53 AM
It can be done! A lot of times better than some commercial projectors.

Pls. support this pinoy site. Its the first in the Phils. but we are  behind compared to other countries, but still we can make better diyprojector compared to some.

I have a full time job and pays well. That is why i can only sell some parts. Maybe soon if i have the time and especially financial resources . And besides my pj cabinet  is not yet perfect. I still have to make a design on how to make keystone adjustment on the fly.

Diyers never runs out of fresh ideas. The diypj is now as sharp and bright as some entry level projectors.

Removed the anti-glare film of my lcd  and got great improvements in sharpness and brightness.

Title: Re: Build your own LCD projector

does the 15k budget for 720p still apply (inflation)?
Title: Re: Build your own LCD projector
Post by: moodster on Aug 12, 2008 at 05:14 PM
20t  pag 720p otherwise 15 inch lcd gagamitin mo. Double the size of my box. Look for lcd with backlight problem and you save alot.

I am in the process of making 1080p. My budget is 30t. Still ok because 1080p projector cost more than 100t

Anyway diy pj resolution is better than commercial svga projector because we are using bigger lcd. Magnification is much lower so screen door effect is non existent.

Ther are alot of bluray dvd copies now and svga diypj image looks like 720p

Just got my 720p finished. Its big but has 10,000 hours lamp life.
Total cost is more or less 16T pesos.
But the results is much better than my  diy svga projector.

Title: Re: Build your own LCD projector
Post by: hertzblaster on Sep 04, 2008 at 01:31 PM
yes if i can make a very nice box, its gonna be very good  for the amount I spend.

10,000 hours life is the advertise life of the bulb Osram 250wHqi-Tsd. Its a small bulb with color temperature of 5600k ( green to blue tint).

Most commercial projector has a color temperature higher than 5600k so it has a bluish tint. In higher color temperature bulb, flesh tone will look unnatural but color saturation and contrast is very good.

I have another bulb with color temperature 4200k and flesh tone looks more natural. you can see my pics in the earlier post but color saturation and contrast has much to be desired for.

The projector i made can project image size from 70 inches diagonal ,about 6ft from the screen to 150 inches
diagonal at a distance of 8ft from the screen.

The distances can be vried based on your design.

The real trade off here is the projector size. But i dont care about size when I am watching movie and lights off.
I used to have infocus x1 before, its nice but i hate counting the life of the bulb and worrying that it will explode anytime. Its bulb cost 20t pesos.

Title: Re: Build your own LCD projector
Post by: iiinas on Sep 04, 2008 at 03:33 PM
so how much is the osram bulb?
Title: Re: Build your own LCD projector
Post by: moodster on Sep 04, 2008 at 03:52 PM
3500 pesos. The bulb has UV filter in its outer envelope. It can be house in a sealed or non sealed enclosure.

Got a b,

Bought bulb that is cheaper and better. Image brightness can now compete with commercial projector

Diyprojector is becoming more affordable to low income consumer.

Bought the bulb for 2000 pesos, 2000hours life with 6500K colortemperature. Same characteristic as most commercial projector bulb.

But its very rewarding. i know how 720p commercial projector look like and I am already near or at it aleady.

Its cheap now or maybe a little higher when you see this at SM applicance center.

The projector is running 8-10 hours a day everyday since Jan 2009. Running hour is mor ethan 2000hrs exceeding th ebulb life.

Rain or shine, the projector is running.Quite unbelievable. If you live in BF, you will easily find the place.

mga masters do you think removing the lcd panel of a monitor and placing it on top of an OHP produce similar results? if yes would a 7" lcd be satisfactory for a 48" diagonal image? tia

its front projection.

I dont know exact address, but when entering thru las pinas bf gate near sm southmall, madadaanan mo na daw according to my bro. its along Palace street. neighborhood cafe. kabisado na yan ng mga trycyle driver dyan sa BF tanong mo na lang.

Using the raw OHP, without replacing the light engine will produce dim results especailly when using smaller lcd. The OHP lenses is more suited for 15 -13 inch lcd.

Title: Re: Build your own LCD projector
Post by: hertzblaster on Aug 18, 2009 at 10:53 AM
Ok using 7 inch lcd,

You can still use the following parts from OHP

1. Projection lens- assuming it is a triplet lens
2. Top fresnel lens
3. Reflector
4. fans and switches

You need to buy
1. Bottom fresnel lens with lower focal length
2.Condenser lens
3. SHort arc metal halide bulb
4. ballast capacitor and ignitor

this will cost you about 5t+. Expect a very good result as long as the lcd is of good quality.

If you will use 10-15 inch lcd size

you will just buy the following

Sa 1080p, bumili ka na talaga ng screen.  Sayang naman kung kita mo yung mga scratches sa wall while viewing in HD.

Sa DIY PJ's niyo, complete interface rin?  Kaya HDMI, component, Svideo, etc?

^sa 15inch 1200p ko DVI (HDCP) and VGA lang, sa 7inch ko VGA and S-video. meron namang nabibiling external tv box for component and composite connection but for me useless na.

Replace the 250w metal halide HSD bulb with 100w LED

Still using the same 7 inch lcd and lenses.

And its cooler than commercial projector using bulbs.

Other than savings on lamp power cost,

Aircon cost will also be lower kung aircon ang room mo.

50,000 hours Led life.

sir hertz if i can mechanically fit an LED lamp in an existing commercial projector wala bang problema sa electrical/electronics side?
Title: Re: Build your own LCD projector
Post by: hertzblaster on Aug 04, 2010 at 04:04 PM
100w led will not fit. The LED requires a very efficient heatsink. May fan pa sa likod ng heatsink sa picture above.  That is why yung CDRKing uses only 30w LED because lower wattage means lower heatsink size.

30watts led output is only 2000 lumens while the 100w version has 7000 lumens so now I  can easily predict the brightness of cdrking led projector.

Yup! Its uses LED 98w water cooled. Malaki but will do the job of 720p. Can go 150 inches and still resolution looks good because it uses 10.1 inch lcd. Looks expensive as all the parts are imported, No locally available parts. It has tv tuner.

Of course.'

You can custom made your projector.

But you need to learn how to build it.

There is no zoom lens..

Diy projector is custom made to your requirement especially the image size and throw distance.

I got 120 inches for 10 ft throw distance.

I am seeing oil and make-up in their faces. I am not used to this !  :P  :P  :P
I can also see that graphic effects and can see that its fake and unreal especially when their faces turned horror like.

Colors of course is more saturated and deeper in actual.

tried playing also in my 7 inch wsvga but it look like just watching on dvd.

I am geared towards making improvement every time I build a new projector.

I recently visited a war room/control center that has multiple PJs stitched side by side and man was that a treat.

Na mention dun that the best PJ was LED (both in performance and being less power hungry) Any chance you are going LED in your next design?

I saw an EPSON pico PJ and saw its fan sa harap , reason for that daw eh para hindi mainitan yung nag pre-present :) tama naman, but dunno if you want to incorporate kasi ceiling mounted naman ang most PJ setup.

Keep up the good work, sana maka PJ mas produced na philippine made. Saka na natin pagusapan yung weaponized PJ for use sa spratlys  ;D

B101EW05 LCD + 126w LED + Aspheric lens.

Image size is 120 inches diagonal

The actual image is more saturated and contrast is much better. Black is blacker and white is whiter in actual.

I settled for DVDs instead of Bluray! Its already awesome on 10.1 inch 1280x800 lcd.
Bluray is fanastic but DVDs are alot cheaper . Sometimes I am having a second thought of trying 1080p LCD . This 1500 contrast is really very nice. If I opted for 1080p lcd, I will have to sacrifice the contrast though resolution is expectedly better.

Brightness is awesome! enjoyed this movie so much!

The hair in the images has bluish tint, but its solid black in actual.

you said its dlp. So it doesnt have lcd. Read so many complaints about that model.
Return that to the seller. They are the only one who can help.

DIy projector uses the older technology that works with better lcd.

Sir Hertzblaster, how bright is your projector compared to ones with the regular bulbs.

My 128w led projector is brighter than my infocusx1 before. I am using 120 inches screen now for my led projector but i Only used 90 inches screen for infocusx1 then.

Built a projector for my brother 2 years ago .Compared with his infocus In24, looks like the same brightness at110inches. My brother said my 250w projector is brighter .

if you can spare a corner, do a clean rack with adequate vents for it at the side. At low lit conditions, distracting ang led lights and display ng mga equipment, even if its a speck.

the screen can stand on its own, takes some getting used to pointing the remote NOT in the front of your viewing area.

save the corners for the subwoofer placement.

IMO: since skeletal pa yang room mo, sa pix prepare ka na ng labasan ng cables for a 7.1 or 9.1 para paglabas sa wall, near sa speaker placement.  also since metal framing pala, vibration lang siguro ang lookout mo when you wall it up, depending on the thickness, but nothing a treatment cant handle. tap mo at additional spot mo siguro sa meet points ng metals and joints to reduce risk of vibration.

exciting. If i have to rebuild an HT room over, I'd go for a high front ceiling kasi yung reflections from the screen halata sa taas, but nothing a dark ceiling wont fix.

Thanks, Ok I will add additional run of spare speaker wires in case I upgrade to 7.1

I guess this is final. The equipment is in the corner/backside and cables will not be visible.

using the 7 inch 720p projector.

Tried the cheap 10m HDMI cable that cost only $14
1. Using laptop , there is occasional flickering
2. Using bluray , perfect! No problem at all!

Since I wont be using PC, I will proceed with the installation of this cable in the ceiling.

Now here is the most exciting part.

The wall is up but still no white paint, the wall measures 177x108 inches. The wall is brownish. in color.  So I put a bond paper at the center so I can have a feel of how the actual image look like later.

I invited a friend who stands 5'7" tall to stand in front of the wall for sizing up!

There is still no power in the home theater so its really very hard to do this test.

Now for the test set-up.
1.The projector is 19ft from the wall
2. The height from the ceiling to the projection lens is 2.5ft.
3. The image dimension is 136 x 86 inches with diagonal image size of 160 inches
4. I use the OHP lens F-240. I will use this so that the projector will be at the back of the seating position. What fascinates me now is, at a distance of 19ft from the wall, the focus is almost perfect from all corners, sides and center. I had been thinking all along that if you are just using 80-120 inches screen, the best projection lens focal length to use is F-260, but unfortunately, I can't find a F-240-260 fresnel.
5. There is no lens shift. or tilting of fresnel.
6, Using 18,000 lumens 128w led. This led is production sample with wrong or bigger array size than the 15500 lumens led.
7. I sold the adjustable focus earlier because the focal length is only a sample. But brightness, resolution and sharpness wise, its much better than the ohp lens.

I can only see the real brightness after painting the screen. But so far, with the bond paper at center, i can predict the brightness, whiteness and colors will be very good. The colors are stale with brownish wall.

So here's how big the image is!

the throw distance is a non-issue to you since from 17 ft ka, others compensate with their zoom lens.

PJ screen width is fantastic. I'm sure later you will read up on the limits of the optimum width from your viewing position, parang i recall  may recommendation para your eyes would spend time to pan the image end to end when viewing that might be distracting.

Also consider testing with gray, baka mas magustohan mo yung blacks and darker images seems to appeal more to most but not sure if that is true for your custom projector.

p.s. magbenta ka na kasi ng projector mo para naman more can afford PJ setup baka mas mura eh WAF is a breeze.

ok here it is, the wall is now painted with flat wall paint.

The projector used was the same as my as my last test, so its just using the ohp lens and pwrong production sample of 128w led.

1. tried initially to position the projector behind the backwall at 24ft from the screen.
it almost fully covered the screen wall with image size at 200 inches . the brightness is still ok but i am already missing the white and black level.
2. I tried to watch a few fast action scene in the movie with my target seating position. Aggh im having a headache. The seating position is too close for the image size. I tried to seat behind the wall and its better.
3. Problem with full images in the screen wall is the front and center speakers will block part of the image so it is not possible.
4. I adjusted the image size and I end up with 138x 84 inches or 161 inches almost the same as before without the front speakers blocking part of the screen. and the white level is still pleasing but black level is not that good. But I believe the black level can be recovered if I will use the prime lens and correct led design.
5. again, i am fascinated by sharp focus from all corners to center of the image. The FIXED FOCAL LENGTH projection lens speak for itself. It has only one perfect distance from projection lens to lcd to get the perfect focus.

Will test the new led sample tom using the same projector. The led has 7000-8000k color temperature.

nuff said.  at 160 inches diagonal image size.
