Title: DVDs with Alternate Endings
Post by: sansrival on Mar 22, 2002 at 06:18 PM
I'm fairly new w/ dvds.  My impression of dvd before is that it contains alternate endings.  Now I know that features varies from one dvd to another.  I've read that some have alternate endings but it also indicates that it can only be viewed if you're using a dvd-rom drive.  Is this true for all?  Till now, I have yet to see a movie w/ an alternate ending.  Just curious, I guess.  :)

Wifey has a DVD of "What Dreams May Come" which has an alternate ending.  This special feature runs on a DVD player. :)  With this movie, I prefer the alternate ending more than the conclusion in the theatrical release.  But that's just me. ;)

Btw, "Forces of Nature" also has an alternate ending.

Hello Sansrival! Welcome to PinoyDVD! Not all DVDs have alternate endings although many of them do. It really depends on the producer of the DVD or the director if they want to put an alternate ending to the movie on the disc, if they shot one at all, that is.

Here are some of my discs with alternate endings:

Die Hard With a Vengeance Special Edition
Notting Hill Ultimate Edition
T2 Ultimate Edition
Lethal Weapon 4
(alternate ending to the first film)
Lost Horizon
Gattaca
(sort of)

I think I have more but I don't remember now.

other dvd's that i could remeber with alternative endings are:

suicide kings (3 alternate endings!)

Army of Darkness
ghost world
& my favorite of all little shop of horror (http://www.classic-horror.com/obscure0701.html)

A Perfect Murder has an alternate ending.

The upcoming Fatal Attraction has the original ending of the film (the one without the Glenn Close-in-the-bathroom scene). Much nicer, IMHO.

Joy Ride is amazing as far as alternate endings go. It actually has THREE alternate endings, and the first one actually changes the ENTIRE last 1/3 of the movie, and it feels like a totally different film.

I'm disappointed that My Best Friend's Wedding came out on Special Edition, and they still didn't include the alternate ending with John Corbett and the singing waiters. Good thing I still have my VHS tape of that.  :)

Vertigo has one of the most famous alternate endings.

Se7en has an alternate ending, with storyboard explanations. I refer to the New Line Platinum Series version.

Others I seem to recall have alternate endings:
The Game
A Perfect Murder

or
Twice Upon a Yesterday (1999)
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000K13X/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20) w/ penelope cruz, a British film along the lines of Sliding Doors
or
Run Lola Run (1999)  (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000021Y77/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20) its basically a 15 minute German film but it stretches to 81 minutes w/ all the what-if scenarios...geez i even got tired, seeing lola run ! ::)

just think of these... as films w/ super extended alternate endings ;)

Yeah with Army of Darkness here are the detailed alternate endings (spoiler):

1. First one was he was zoom forth in time were he is only the living person around

2. Second was at the shopping center.. I believe he was zoomed back to present

Hi Ann07,
Did you notice in the ending scene of the theatrical release, just before Ethan Hawke got off the his car, you could see another car behind him.

They only showed who was in this other car in the alternate ending scene.

Adding Bio Zombie to this thread

The alternate ending for this HK is  a little bit gruesome than the theatrical ending. Both still is a sad ending.

In the Mood for Love has two alternate endings. More accurately, one extended ending and one completely different one.

Both are involving, indeed all the deleted scenes are. The stars wished director Wong Kar-Wai hadn't cut the extended ending. I must say I agree with the director's decision to end the film just like he did. More powerful that way.

Have to add:

Not Another Teen Movie has an alternate ending among its 18 deleted scenes featured on the disc. It seems they got that "special guest star from the 1980s" at the last minute, since the original ending doesn't feature that guest star. They reshot the entire thing, to a much more satisfying result, IMHO.

"The Center of the World", starring Molly Parker, also has alternate endings. Their difference from the actual ending is, IMHO, very subtle, though. The director's commentary for these alternate endings is quite helpful in understanding the story better.

That is a bummer.  :o I watched Joy Ride via the R3 rental dvd FROM our nearest video shop. AND I WAS ENTHRALLED FROM BEGINNING TO ENDS. But there were no alternate endings. I would really love to see this.

Finally, I've seen a dvd with an alternate ending.  I just recently watched Someone Like You and it has one.  Overall, it seems like the same ending to me, though there were a few scenes added and a change of location for the final scene.  Though I've seen also Terminator 2 and Run Lola Run which were also mentioned in this thread, I only consider it as an extended scene and the other a movie by itself, respectively, and not as alternate endings.

Notting Hill alternate ending:

The resto has reopened, and the friends are having dinner. Some diners are coming to the table to ask Anna (Julia Roberts) to sign autographs.

Max asks William (Hugh Grant), how is life in the fast lane? William says it has its ups and downs, but if you love the girl, it's all worth it in the end. Will and Anna kiss.

Will asks, does that answer your question? They laugh.

Probably not an alternate ending, but I got a bit pissed off when Tom Twyker's THE WARRIOR AND THE PRINCESS explained the ambiguous ending of the story. Although it was meant for film appreciation and was not meant to douse the enthusiasm of people who already made their ending, it came right after the credits, so there was no choice but to watch it.

Other than that, the film is fab!

It's normally specified as an Alternate Ending in the Special Features list as stated at the back cover of the DVD case.

Kailangan bang napanuod mo na ang orig movie so that you'll see the difference? ???

Not necessarily.  When you click 'Play Movie' on the menu, the DVD will play the version as seen in theaters (that's usually the case).  Then you can view the alternate ending separate from the rest of the entire movie by going to the Special Features section. :)

mas maganda ang alternate ending ng Fatal Attraction

Fatal Attraction
Cast: Michael Douglas, Gleen Close, Anne Archer, Ellen Hamilton Latzen, Stuart Pankin, Ellen Foley, Fred Gwyne, Meg Mundy, Tom Brennan, Lois Smith, Mike Nussbaum and J.J. Johnston
Directed by: Adrian Lyne
Screenplay by: James Dearden and Nicholas Meyer
Studio: Paramount Home Video
Street Date: April 16, 2002
Running Time: 117 min
MPAA Rating: R

Synopsis:

Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) goes playing in the Meat Packing District with Alex Forrest (Glenn Close) when his goody-two-shoes wife leaves for the weekend. Not one to be ignored, Alex goes psycho-bitch when the wife returns and Dan ends their affair. Sure, Alex may be little more than a bunny-boiling stalker and James Dearden's screenplay is rather unconcerned with the details of her psychosis but Fatal Attraction is still notable for Close's resilient, complex performance. There's no subtlety to Dearden's words ("If looks could kill," "I love animals," and "I'm a great cook") though Close creates a history's worth of bottled-up repression with her every gesture (the twitch of her lips, the deadness of her stare). Director Adrian Lyne is an underrated visualist. Here he does fabulous things with layers and Howard Atherton's anemic, unnerving soft-lighting, not to mention Puccini's Madame Butterfly. Still, without the film's original ending (where Alex's suicide was set to the opera), the musical reference is lost amidst the film's existing, audience-pleasing showdown between jilted fling and courageous wife. Fatal Attraction is less an all-encompassing comment on females in general than it is a startling reminder of Close's ability to give a physical face to the subtext of one woman's inner torment. While Alex's behavior seems possible, Lyne's fabulous camera crawls and Close's frozen stares have never been able to fully compensate for Dearden's shoddy attention to character history.

Image/Sound:

Though Paramount's transfer of Fatal Attraction is not without its fair share of scratches and blemishes, I love that the film still looks like a film. The softness of the film's visual palette remains unnervingly juxtaposed with the film's high drama. Sadly, sound design has come a long way since 1987 and Fatal Attraction suffers for that. Less successful than Maurice Jarre's operatic score is the film's noticeably flat, unexciting dialogue track and sound mix, which is better served on the disc's Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track.

Extras:

Fatal Attraction's alternate ending is finally out of the bag and it's proof positive that a film instantly compromises its artistic integrity when it panders to the whims of test audiences. The original, more anti-climactic ending makes it entirely too easy for Dan Gallagher to acquit himself by giving him a tape with Alex Forrest's suicidal confession on it. Still, in this more haunting finale, the spectator is forced to sympathize with Alex by watching her lonely death. Adrian Lyne's audio commentary is a tad redundant after listening to many of the disc's features yet it readily showcases the director's utmost respect for the acting process. Factoids abound (the Gallagher apartment was the same one used for 9 1/2 Weeks and some 18 takes were needed to get that cream cheese on Douglas's nose just right) but Lyne's commentary is most notable for his carefully paced dissection of the film's mise en scene (his interest in shooting through layers) and his humble acknowledgements of errors (the too-quick rack focus from Douglas to Close in the film's country home). The features on Paramount's Fatal Attraction DVD might as well begin and end with an outstanding feature called "Forever Fatal: Remembering Fatal Attraction. There isn't anything visually spectacular about this commemorative documentary but the producers have expertly crammed a film's entire history (from its inception to the social ramifications of its message) into a concise, 30-minute time frame. Admittedly, more important than where the film was born (from a James Darden short film on a not-yet-fatal attraction) is the spotlight on Close's approach to her role. Not only did Close do enough research to render her otherwise one-dimensional Alex a genuinely sympathetic portrait of female rage, Close herself voices her utmost contempt for having had to re-shoot the original ending for the existing, more audience-friendly one. A "Social Attraction" featurette explores the film's affront to feminism at the time of its release. The consensus amongst the film's actors and producers: Alex was never meant to represent every single career woman. "Visual Attraction" is a behind-the-scenes featurette that celebrates the film's fabulous make-up job (yes, Close's gaze is enough to raise the dead) and subtle costume work. Also available is the film's original theatrical trailer.

I never saw Speed during it's theatrical release but saw it instead on a flight from Milan (in-flight movies). The movie ended when the bus crashed in to a building. But I was quite surprised when I saw the dvd ending when the bus actually crashed in to an airplane. I was curious about the difference and found out that FAA regulations prohibits movies shown in flight that shows airplanes being blown up or something... so they have an alternate ending for the in-flight movie version.

yep, they have the alternate ending with a different approach to the shots, xage
there's the other one where Brad Pitt's character does not shoot Kevin Spacey but Morgan Freeman's does...

need to check it again to be sure... nalito na ako...  ???

Peter Pan (2003)

SPOILERS AHEAD: word of warning for those who havent seen or read Peter Pan.  ;D

Originally,
Wendy never saw Peter Pan again.

Alternately,
Peter Pan returns for Wendy, but realizes that the Wendy he knew is already old.instead, He invites Wendy's daughter to join him for an adventure in Neverland.

This is a rough cut without the special effects, just some rope to demonstrate flight, and a light bulb for Tinkerbell.

28 Days Later (2002)

Havent seen the alternate ending, but i believe it was release along with the theatrical release in the US. After the credits the message "what if..." appears along with the alternate ending.

For those who dont have the DVD or havent seen the US release followed by the alternate ending, 28 Days Later will be shown on local cable Star Movies on March 5 or 12 Saturday with the ALTERNATE ENDING, please double check. So watch out for that!

The Iron Giant - SE has an alternate opening scene. A longer cut of the boat out at sea sequence where we get to meet a lot more of the crew, before they come across the iron giant.

the theatrical ending of K-Pax is prang bitin.. but the alternate one is good...pti ung Swordfish..the alternate ending was good din.. ;D

Yup, kinda liked the Alternate Ending of Swordfish.  From 1.9 Billion Dollars to $500 dollars, that's really frustrating.

But they still get to kill that Prince in the Boat I believe.

one of my favorite alternate ending is from Godfather...  where diane keaton is lighting a candle. silent. inside the church. praying for the soul of Michael Corleone---who just assumed the prestigous and dangerous position.

 :D

How about this for alternate:

Final Destination 3 - the viewer can choose the destinies of the characters. How they die or if they die at all. Worth a check out, i think.

What the Bleep do We Know? Down the Rabbit Hole - everytime you watch the movie, the scenes are rearranged. Cool marketing campaign, me thinks.

I will just mention it here so others can read too. :)

It's been quite long since I last saw Titanic alternate ending. If I'm not mistaken, the old lady survivor (Rose Dawson) reveals the heart of the ocean the crew of the ship before throwing it into the sea. After touching the gem, Bill Paxton was reluctant to let go.

As for T2, it has a happy ending where we get to see Sarah gets old (& have grandchildren?) & reflecting her life. :)
