Title: DVD-9: Why very expensive?
Post by: Blu-Ray on Feb 08, 2005 at 08:28 PM
Anybody knows why this dual layer disk >:(  is far high than single layer disk? I don't think it is an idea to lessen piracy. Even without dvd-9, parates can have alternatives. Sa tingin nyo anong dahilan, or alam nyo ba kung bakit almost P500 isang blank dvd9? Thanks in advance.

from an article @cooltechzone:

"...generating DL media in mass quantities is far more complicated than regular CD-R and CD-RW discs, and it requires quite a bit of financial resources in the production stage.  The failure rate of DL disc in production is also one of the highest among all media variations, which also explains higher prices for these products."

Thank you very much idlewild for the info. Kaya pala wala tayong mabili dito...kulang sa production at mahirap gawin. Philander sana magdilang anghel ka.

Actually, it's about US$6 now for the Riteks based on quotes from online sellers. Is it worth the extra expense? Depends.

DVD backup tools have evolved significantly in the last 12 months. IMHO, unless you have a really large screen, the differences are minimal. And today's faster PCs can spit out transcoded DVDs in 15 minutes and reencoded DVDs in 3 hours.

Also,  single layer media is getting cheaper everyday. Taiyo Yudens 4X DVD-Rs can be ordered online for P15/pc  while Verbatim 8X DVD-Rs are going for about P18/pc. Here in Manila, the Iomega's are doing P22 and P28 for the 4X and 8X discs respectively.

Try Meritline. Here's the link to their TY page:
http://meritline.com/taiyo-yuden-dvd-media.html

Taiyo-Yuden is classified as professional grade media but the 4X DVD-Rs can be had for as low as US$0.33 each per 100 pieces. Sorry, I used P50:$1 conversion when I quoted prices in my previous post. This isn't a local website btw, so I order from them and take advantage of free ground shipping to relatives who're planning visits to the Philippines.

Thanks for the reply boss firewired. No prob with the conversion. Even if it costs P30, it still Taiyo-Yuden and I've been looking for it for a long time.

This could come in handy for those who purchases stuff at eBay.

I buy my 2.4X DVD+R DLs in eBay from several sellers just to get the best bang for the buck. Who doesn't anyway? I was able to come across a seller named "dvdmedias4less (http://stores.ebay.com/DVDMedias4Less)" who was selling 2x 5-pack Ritek/Ridata 2.4X 8.5GB DVD+R DL for $40 (+8.25% CA tax) and US$10 for S/H. I purchased and paid a total of US$53 and the delivery took a little over a week. At that cost, if I'd ignore the S/H. each disc was a little over US$4 but no more than $4.50. Not bad since most stores sell them US$6 and above for each media (not including sales tax).

Just curious.  Once you've ripped a DVD-9 title onto the hard disk, will the Nero DVD burning software seamlessly and transparently write it onto a blank DVD-9 like an ordinary DVD-5?  Or will be prompted for layer change?  TIA

Not entirely sure on the layer change but here are a couple of experiences that I had. My kid would always hold onto my collectible DVDs (especially Disney ones) and have smudges. Fortunately, no scratches yet. I backed up a copy of Toy Story on a DVD-9 and there are scenes where the video would freeze up for a fraction of a second. I supposed there is a layer change. But when I backed up Tarzan on a DVD-9, it's no different from the original. My only hunch is that instead of burning at 2.4x (as specified on the disk), burn it at a lower speed like 2x or even lower.

You can get Ridata and TDK for P200 at CD-R King. There are prob. cheaper prices and brands elsewhere, like stores in Manila, etc. The burners are also cheaper now: around P2T-3T for an internal drive.
