Title: Popular DVDs That You Refuse To Get!
Post by: gonz on Dec 07, 2001 at 12:42 AM
I feel so much pressure to buy blockbuster movies when they come out on DVD -- even if I didn't enjoy those movies at all when I saw them in theaters.  Be it awesome special features, tremendous packaging, or simply wanting to give a blockbuster another chance when it comes out on DVD -- I've gotten tempted lately to buy these new releases that I hated in theaters:

Planet of the Apes - I panned this movie so bad when I saw it in theaters.  And yet, when I saw the scrumptious two-disc set on store shelves, touting tons of extras and the most technologically advanced disc ever, I have to admit I thought twice.  But in the end I walked past.

Pearl Harbor - My lack of regard for Michael Bay is legendary. I thought this movie was so bad I was actually laughing at the love scenes and awkwardly somber lines.  And yet...when I saw it on shelves this afternoon, I was sorely tempted to pick it up.  "Just watch the bombing sequence," I was saying to myself.  But no...in the end I left this bomb alone.  :)

Make that two votes for (or against) Pearl Harbor. The headphone pseudo-5.1 audio track is intriguing, but not enough.

Moulin Rouge. Stood up after 15 minutes in the theater. Didn't take a second look at the DVD. Suplado no?

Don't think I'll rent them, either. Though I might rent POTA, which I didn't bother to see in the theater.

I wouldn't get Armageddon and The Rock from Critereon.  I don't care whether they are packed to the gills with features.  The movies themselves are just simply not worth the premium being charged by Critereon.

Another thumbs-down vote for Pearl Harbor, my wife wanted to see this one.. so naturally, I got dragged into watching it.  I ended up admiring the Japanese and got pissed with the obligatory come-uppance.

Final Fantasy
Monsters Inc.
Toy Story
Antz

Wala lang. I just don't like CG Animation. Strange no, for someone who's working in similar fields. Siguro I'm missing a lot, pero OK lang.

Hmm, this is a very interesting thread...I have The Rock (Criterion), Titanic, Shrek, Final Fantasy, Toy Story 1 and 2, Antz, M:I-1 and 2, X-Men, and I fully intend to buy Monsters Inc. when it is released most likely in summer 2002.

It seems that what others resisted, I found irresistible!  ;)

I'm probably gonna get flamed for this one but:

The Godfather boxed set

I admit, I've never watched any of the godfather movies and I'm sure it's good but it's not something I'd watch over and over again. Hence, my unwillingness to buy the dvd.

Ok, I got a confession to make. I *missed* Pearl Harbor because I was too busy at that time. But judging from what I'm hearing, I really didn't miss anything. :) Now the question: what was so bad about it? Or am I opening a big can of worms?

I don't blame you. Personally, I *wanted* to embrace this movie. I loved the original and admire Burton's way of showcasing the unusual side of things. But, 30 minutes into it, I wanted to walk out.The only thing that saved it for me were the superlative production design and Tim Roth's performance.

I was so upset at how Tom Cruise butchered the original M:I concept just to inflate his own star that I totally refused to watch M:I2. Not even if Anthony Hopkins was in it. So, was I wrong? Is M: I2 any good?

well..if you compare the movie to the tv series, "butchered" nga is the right word ...but if u take the film based on its action sequences ..puwede na...  the woo man can get no wrong...

btw..the only reason why i got the MI2 disc is that they included the clip of ben stiller as tom crooze(the stunt double of tom cruise) which was shown during the mtv movie awards..hilarious!

Pearl Harbor - sikat na tong title na to sa thread na to, ah!  Sana sa ibang movie na lang nila inilagay yung test run ng Dolby Headphones... gusto ko pa naman talaga subukan yun...

Planet of the Apes - i found it to be a little too bland for my taste...

Final Fantasy - i've heard that the CGI animation is great, and the DVD features are plentiful, pero narinig ko rin na so-so lang yung kwento, so I guess I'll just pass on this one too...

Forrest Gump - hehehe...  i'm just holding a grudge because I'm still pissed off that this movie  beat Pulp Fiction in the Oscars...  :)

Tomb Raider - love Angelina Jolie, but the movie was blah...

...but in the end, like what blitz said, kung may magbibigay sa akin ng mga titles na to, oks lang sa akin!  ;D  sino ba naman ako para tumanggi ng regalo?  pandagdag pa rin naman yan sa collection!  ;D

Okay, you asked for it...all I can tell you is, you are missing a lot.  There are good reasons why The Godfather and Godfather II are hailed by most critics as the greatest American movies ever made. The main reason is that they truly are the greatest American movies ever made. You're simply not going to get the full impact of these movies until you sit down and begin watching each from the start.  15 minutes into them, I guarantee you will not want to stop watching until the very end.  Then you will wish that they had not ended.

At least watch the movies before you decide the DVD set isn't worth the trouble.  As for me, the only reason why I haven't slapped down the cash for the boxed set yet is that I don't have the cash to slap down.  Otherwise, I'm so there.  :)

Brian DePalma's take on the concept is clearly superior, and the marvelously complex plot acquits the first Mission quite adequately against most classic noir spy thrillers, IMHO.  The ensemble cast works hard, and Jon Voight is deliciously hammy as Jim Phelps gone bad (something that longtime fans of the TV series have long fantasized about), while Vanessa Redgrave attacks the role of Max with sumptuous gusto.

M:I-2, with its dumbed-down simplistic plot and uncharismatic performances, offers none of the charms of the first movie.  Stripped of these other enjoyments, it relies on Woo's action sequences to carry the day -- unfortunately, that's not enough.  And the action sequences are sub-par by Woo's standards -- I'll take the fight scenes in The Killer or Hardboiled any day over the kinetic but lifeless action in M:I-2.

In the end I agree with chico -- the Ben Stiller parody is the main reason to get this disc, that and the amazing Metallica song and video.

By the way, let me remind everyone (as well as myself) that since this thread is in the DVD Discussion rather than Film and TV Talk, we should focus on the DVDs we refuse to get, rather than the relative merits of the movies in question.  So that we can stay on-topic.  :)

Will you be able to resist it if the 4-disc (according to latest rumors) Director's Cut edition comes out?  And at a price that's nice?

There are a whole bunch of excellent documentary DVDs on the actual events at Pearl Harbor, if that's all you're after; try the A&E or History Channel releases.

As for me, I refuse to get Armaggedon, Criterion or otherwise. Everytime I see it, I remember the Deep Impact movie, which I prefer.  I just can't reconcile the premise that they entrusted the very existence of earth to somebody whose mian concern is not paying tax for life.  I know it was meant to be funny, but, hey maybe it's just me. ;)

No matter how excellently crafted "Goodfellas" is, I just can't get myself to buy the disc. Don't get me wrong-- I admire the film very much. But there's just something about it that gets my blood boiling. I felt so heavy the first time I watched the film that my friends & I got out of the A/V room feeling violent, and talking "the talk." Almost got a copy, but bought a more wholesome PG movie instead.

Tomb Raider - I'm sick and tired of Lara Croft.

Titanic.  Nearly forgot about this film, buti na lang nabasa ko sa thread.  I already said that I won't buy Pearl Harbor... pero given a choice between the two.. I'll give Titanic two thumbs-down.  To the director... king of the world.. you're not :)

Shrek.  What can I say?  (Then I saw her face...) I'm NOT a believer. :)
Title: Re: Popular DVDs That You Refuse To Get!

I've said this before, but I think this is a very interesting thread.  In some cases, you find out more about a person from what they don't like, rather than from what they do.  A phenomenological breakthrough!  ;)

In any case, I have both Titanic and Shrek.  Interestingly, I've never felt the need to pop Titanic in the player and view the whole thing again.  I like viewing the special effects sequences only, not the love scenes or "character development" scenes. As a fan of Jim Cameron's earlier movies I'm glad I own it for completeness' sake (along with Terminator Special Edition, Aliens, and T2 Ultimate.  Now awaiting a decent release of True Lies), but it's not among my favorites.

As for Shrek, it is currently one of the most-viewed DVDs in my collection (and reportedly now the best-selling DVD of all time).  My kids ask for it practically every day.  The DVD games that seem so useless and wasted to me -- they actually give my kids lots of fun and enjoyment (as in, they laugh their heads off to see Lord Farquaad with the body of Donkey and the legs of Princess Fiona!).  They haven't been so obsessive about a DVD since I bought Toy Story 2.

Other popular movies I refuse to get:  Tomb Raider and Rush Hour.

Question:  how many of you refused to get Episode I: the Phantom Menace? (I got it -- and surprisingly , it gets viewed a lot more than expected.)

Who refused to get The Mummy and/or The Mummy Returns?  (I have both)

And who will refuse to get Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone when released? (My kids will lynch me if I don't.)

Who's refusing to pick up Jurassic Park III?  (I have the first two, so I'll probably end up buying it at some point.)

I got episode 1 and (ashamedly, is there such a word?) it's one of the most viewed dvds I have. Mainly for the pod race and the duel scenes.

I have both Mummy and The Mummy Returns.

I plan to get Harry Potter (my mom will lynch me if I don't)

JP3 I'll probably buy since I have the first 2 and...

Shrek, I'll wait when (IF!) astrovision ever has it available. Failing that, I'll probably buy the r1 version sometime in Jan or Feb.

Cool thread gonz! It's a weekend and my brain's still not working properly so here's a very short list:

Episode I - I rented this disc from Movie Depot a few weeks ago it's surprising how resistable the urge to buy this DVD is after watching it.

Harry Potter - My family loved this movie, my girlfriend loved it, all my friends loved this movie, I marginally enjoyed it (Though I saw this movie three times). I really want to buy this DVD for my girlfriend, but I'm holding off from buying it for the same reason I haven't bought any of the books yet:  This unwholesome fear that they'll release a boxed set with all 7 movies/books in the future.

Hannibal - Loved the first movie/book, Silence of The Lambs (second if you count Manhunter), but I hated the Hannibal book. I haven't seen the movie yet, but from what I hear, I'm not missing anything.

Planet Of The Apes - I just bought the boxed set of the original movies from EBTGmike and I must say that I enjoyed these old movies so much that I can only consider the remake as trash.

Lara Croft - When I first saw this movie, I thought that it was the worst movie I've seen this year (yup, I thought this movie was worse than Pearl Harbor). Though it already has been dethroned (Tomcats is now the worst movie I've seen this year.), it's still enough reason for me to pass this by.

Of course I don't have to mention Pearl Harbor, Titanic and MI:2 anymore since those discs had enough of their fair share of bashings.

More to come.

This is a dilemma for me once this is released.  The dilemma is that...are you going to buy the 3rd part coz you have the first two regardless of the trashy plot and the same set of dinosaurs which I feel is just so redundant and people just get tired of it, or buy it coz the movie is just great? (bleech!) >:(

We are sometimes buying just under par sequels just because we own the first blockbuster movies.  Think its more of collection sake rather than us viewing it again and again. Is this justifyable or worth it? ???

Right on nirvblakr!  But on the other hand, consider my case... I was set to buy American Pie DVD (already had a VCD of it)... a movie which I'm not ashamed to admit I loved.  But the sequel sucked (well.. that is accdg. to 2 colleagues since I haven't seen it yet), which made me hesitant on buying the DVD.
So right now, the question for me is.. should I buy the Unrated Version DVD or not?
Here's hoping that someone just give it to me as a gift :)

I agree with your sentiment, and I wouldn't buy a sequel simply because it is a sequel.  There has to be more of a reason than that, even if that reason is my kids loved it (but I didn't).

I didn't go crazy over JPIII as I did with the first movie (which I saw in theaters nine times, since I was so psyched after reading Michael Crichton's novel -- which was conceptually brilliant but poorly written, as with all Chrichton novels).  However, I did think that JPIII was more enjoyable than The Lost World.  I sorely missed the absence of Sam Neill and Laura Dern in that sequel.

Anyway, as I said I'm probably getting it.

x-ran & gonz- Maybe this is somewhat one of the ploys of producers of sequels (sometimes they are not the same as the original) that they know the sequel would sell i.e. for videos, DVDs because of collector's just to have a complete set then ending up as dust gatherers.

Another of those rip-off sequels is Die Hard 3.  This was a really budgeted movie with a stupid plot and didn't come close to the 1st 2.  And they are selling the Die Hard Trilogy boxed set with that Part 3 to be used as a coaster. >:(  I'd rather buy the DVDs separately...just the part 1 & 2.  Forget about the savings. >:(

Personally, I did like the transition of Evil Dead 1-->2-->3 where the first one was a real serious horror movie then comes 2 where there was seriousness and a touch of comedy then comes 3 where the comedy was more than the horror part. I did love watching Evil Dead 3 again and again but it would have been better if the effects were more fluid and lifelike.  The technology was like the Sinbad series.  Very bad!  Shows that it was a B(low-budgeted)-movie only good for laughs! :P

You could simply rent the VHS or DVD of American Pie 2 to see if the DVD is worth picking up, right?

I'm not talking about American Pie 2 in this instance gonz... what I'm trying to say is because the sequel sucked(?), suddenly I'm not sure about buying the original.

You are right though about renting American Pie 2 first to see first-hand if it really did sucked.  (Heheheh... now I remember that part of the reason my colleagues said it sucked was bec. there was no "drool" scene with Shannon Elizabeth)

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you there, sir.  I thought Die Hard 3, being directed once again by McTiernan, was better than Renny Harlin's part 2.  Harlin has no talent for building suspense in his action sequences the way that McTiernan (sometimes) does. The first half of Die Hard 3, with McClane and Zeus being led all over New York by Simon's insidious brain teasers, was effective, intelligent, and great fun -- a cool homage to Dirty Harry as well.  The ending fell flat, but it doesn't take away from the rest of the movie.  Die Hard 2 is nothing more than a sub-par plot-clone of the first movie.

That being said, nothing comes close to the first Die Hard.  It is far and away one of the best 80's Hollywood action movies, IMHO.

I see...well, the fact that the sequel reportedly sucked doesn't in any way change how much you enjoyed the first one, so I don't see why that should change your mind about buying just that one DVD.

I freely admit that I enjoyed the first American Pie, just as I enjoyed the first Ace Ventura.  :)

I refuse to buy:

1) Pearl Harbor
2) Armageddon
3) Saving Private Ryan
4) Die Hard sequels
5) Star Wars: Phantom Menace

I don't like these movies and their DVDs as well...

No matter how excellently crafted "Goodfellas" is, I just can't get myself to buy the disc. Don't get me wrong-- I admire the film very much. But there's just something about it that gets my blood boiling. I felt so heavy the first time I watched the film that my friends & I got out of the A/V room feeling violent, and talking "the talk." Almost got a copy, but bought a more wholesome PG movie instead.

my sentiments exactly!!..unfortunately, this movie and one flew over a cuckoo's nest(which was full screen, super horrible transfer, no extras and no subtitles(not even close captioning)were two of the first dvds i ever got!..sold them to an unsuspecting fella the next week, now im just waiting for my karma hehe

1. Have no plans of buying Episode 1
2. I'm planning to get The Mummy but it's not in my priority list. As for Mummy 2, wag na lang.
3. I love the HP books and I enjoyed the movie so count me in as one the early buyers once this movie is released in DVD... Pero I also share Phobos's fear that they might release a boxed set...
4. I'll probably get Jurassic 1 lang. I didn't enjoy Jurassic 2 and I didn't bother to see Jurassic 3.

BTW, dapat yata may PARTIAL AND UNOFFICIAL TALLY OF THE POPULAR DVDS THAT WE REFUSE TO BUY para makita natin kung sino ang magwawagi. Hehehe. Mukhang namumuro ang "Pearl Harbor". ;D

Yup, saw the trailer too. It's "Yamacrapa: The Hidden Treasure", one of the seven entries in the forthcoming Metro Manila filmfest... Mukhang promising... It's a co-prod between MAQ Films (a sister company of Regal) and Roadrunner Network kaya heavy on post-prod and CGI.

Partial and Unofficial Tally of Popular DVDs that PinoyDVDers Refuse To Get:

As expected, Pearl Harbor tops the list of DVDs we are least likely to get by a wide margin over the second-placer, Titanic.  Tied at third place are Planet of the Apes, Armageddon and Tomb Raider. M:I-2 is fourth most-despised, and Episode 1: the Phantom Menace rounds out the top five.  Three Michael Bay movies are in the top 10, making him our most reviled director.  ;)

The full results so far:

Pearl Harbor            15
Titanic            8
Planet of the Apes            5
Armageddon            5
Tomb Raider            5

The first time I watched it, I swore that I wouldn't buy the Devlin-Ememrhlich version of Godzilla. Its cheesy awefulness, not to mention its rip-offs of THe Lost Word and Jurassic Park, turned me off taht I even trashed it in a newspaper review.

Now...after seeing a DVD of the green monster stomping its way through New York on a 30 inch TV set with full sensurround audio...I just might change my mind.

I wouldn't get Rush Hour 2 either except that dvdreview.com said there are hidden easter eggs of the teaser and theatrical trailers of LOTR in anamorphic widescreen and 5.1 sound.

Yes, I know, they are only trailers and not worth the price of the dvd but hey, I love LOTR and just can't wait.

So let me get this straight -- you're willing to pay full price for the DVD of Rush Hour 2 just so you can  access the hidden LOTR teasers/trailers?

Say, I have a copy of the LOTR novelization...how much will you give me for it?  ;)

To put it shortly and simply, yes.

Rush Hour 2 is not THAT bad a movie, so I treat the movie as a bonus. Normally, I would not buy the dvd on its own. It's just that the LOTR trailers are tempting.

I will give you nothing for your novels because I have them already.

And, one would argue, that you're guilty of a similar crime, that of getting Pearl Harbor (a worse movie in my opinion) for the documentary (unless the doc found in the dvd can only be found there and nowehere else) ;D

i used to buy New Wave CD's for just one song
so i understand the concept of an obsession
and the need to get things

it is nice to get things it makes one feel good
unfortunately what happened is i ran out of money
so i guess if you have money, its good to satisfy an obsession
if you don't have money, tough
but you can always make more ;D

and oh yeah, i'd never get The Matrix, coz I hate that movie but I'm still excited to see the sequels anyhow ;) ;D

and i'd buy pearl harbor, just for the battle scene, but there are so many other dvd's to buy before the popular ones that i'd probably never get to the popular ones.

I admit that I feel (felt -- but no longer) like finding some way to justify picking up Pearl Harbor while still maintaining my self-respect.  However, I didn't say that my justification would take chico's form, i.e., buying it for the documentary.  That's like saying you read Penthouse for the articles.  ;)

well...it seems like we could argue this point for a long time so let me cut to the chase and end it right here, cool? :)

Is it wrong to buy a dvd you would not normally buy but you buy anyway because a few tidbits were included that interests you: YES

But does it make you feel good anyway: YES (at least it does to me) :P

aaaaaahhhhhhhh....

Now for a few more. I'm never gonna purchase...

Terminator 1: Don't know why but it just didn't grab me. Simply a matter of taste I guess.

Sleepy Hollow: great film but not enough to make me want to buy and keep "forever"

Fight Club: Again, movie was great but not enough to take the plunge to dvdland.

Clarification: with the exception of terminator 1, I like these movies. Just not enough to buy the dvd.

This is a matter of not really refusing to buy, but holding out for a boxed set:
1.) Episode 1 -Let's face it, they did it to us with the Lser Disc release of Episode 4-6 with additinal goodies, so Ill wait for the complete series in a boxed set, with, hopefully, even more goodies.
2.) The LOTR Fellowship of the Rings-same reason( except no Laser Disc release, i assume )
3.) Harry Potter - same -
4.) Aliens- too much Sigourney Weaver. The best yata part two, yung iba, nabaduyan na ko( my opinion only, ha? )
-That's all I can think of, right now. ;D

Many people have already mentioned these titles, but just want my votes and two centavos be counted...

Titles I will not get:
Shrek
- don't get me wrong, this film had its funny moments...the first 20 mins are hilarious. It's just that after that, they stopped injecting parodies of the fairy tales (which, in my opinion, gave it laughs and made it interesting) instead focusing on the relationships of Donkey, Shrek, and the Princess. There isn't anything wrong with that, I just didn't feel the wit or the chemistry between Murphy and Myers was with at par with what we've already seen in computer animation buddy movies (i.e. Hanks and Allen). I'm big fans of both comedians, but they just didn't seem to gel in this film. And they didn't put enough of Lithgow in it...he was priceless!

Pearl Harbor
I salute Michael Bay and Bruckheimer for the effort, but they got really muddled in their execution. They wanted to tell a story about the glory, sadness and heroism of war, but they wanted to attract the appeal that was generated by Titanic (i.e. personal love story amidst historical tragedy/turmoil). There was obviously a tug of war between these two opposing concepts and everybody lost. They combined several tried and tested hollywood formulae in the picture, hoping to hit gold, but they really fell flat on their faces.

It remains to be seen if Bay's director's cut is a more coherent version, or just a longer cut of the movie many wanted to walk out of halfway through...

M:I2
Tom Cruise is ok and John Wu is a visionary, but the movie's script is to blame for its awfulness. The whole movie is one long rip-off with firecrackers attached. Anyone who's seen Hitchcock's Notorious will know that MI:2 practically photocopied the script and reshot it, badly. The worst thing of all, nowhere in all its promotion, nowhere in the interviews of the scriptwriter and director and crew, no one acknowledges that they've ripped off Hitchcock. To remake Hitchcock is one thing (not wise), but to rip off one of his movies and count on the probability that no one's seen it is another....

MI:2 is probably just one of many of Hollywood's recent ripoffs.

Tomb Raider
The game is nice, Jolie is yummy, and I wanted to like this movie really bad. But I could only think one thing while I sat there in the theater for a couple of hours:

NOT EXCITING, ENTERTAINING, or even FUNNY.

Matrix- nagsawa na ako sa VHS and VCD, bakit pa bibili ng DVD?

Mission Impossible 1 & 2- same reason

Total Recall
Saving Private Ryan
- After looking around Manila for a copy that was supposed to be included on the sale tapos sold out din...sabi ko may VHS naman ako na orig so why bother? (sour graping ba?)

Fight Club
Tomb Raider
Raiders of the Lost Ark Series
Back to the Future Series
Gladiator

most of my reasons for not buying is because I have watched these movies several times in either VHS or VCD formats  :-\

Many may find it funny or a waste but my first priority in collecting my DVDs is to have a library of the topgrossing movies of all time. That's why, 1 of my earliest DVD was Titanic because I figured it deserved it owing to it being the #1 top grossing movie of all time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not rich and I have to save some of my money just to be able to sustain this very expensive endeavor. I also have SW EPs 1 & 2, Sixth Sense, Blair Witch Project which I know some of the DVDphiles have grown so tired of already. IMDB nga pala ang check ko para sa top 100 movies at kahit makuha ko lang ang top 50 roon happy na ako.  I admit though na ilang beses ko naring pinanood iyong EPs 1 & 2, same with Spider-man, LOTR and Pirates of the Carribean. I don't like the 2 prequels that much either pero something about Star Wars draws me. Having said that, I guess, I won't buy muna iyong wala sa top 50 highest grossing movies. Ang pinag-iipunan ko ngayon eh Star Wars Trilogy and believe it or not Passion of the Christ.

Some DVDs that I won't consider buying because I already have the VCDs:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
the Rambo trilogy
Jurassic Park 1-3
Spider-Man

Other DVDs I'm not getting because I don't love the films enough to bother:

Gladiator
The Patriot
Master and Commander
Batman Series
X-men 1 & 2

I'd rather save money for the movies I really want.

The Matrix box set - I enjoyed the Matrix movies but not enough to make me wanna watch it again and again in the small screen.

Miss Congeniality box set - Why do they always give special DVD treatment to bad movies?

Nina: Live - I've come to hate Nina what with the incessant playing of her CD in my office. I, frankly, do not see why she's popular. Her singing voice is not that good. In fact, if you listen closely, she's not that much better if a teenybopper or a labandera sings along to her "gasgas na gasgas" na covers of popular love songs. Someone should tell her she sucks and she's popular only because Filipino are suckers for senti music.

1. there's this new release of Daredevil: Director's Cut being sold for Php900.00 (2-disc set). I was thinking of buying this one but since what I would expect to see  is basically the same movie (with some extra scenes included), I thought, why waste 900 pesos?

2. Aliens vs. Predator 2-disc set. I hated the movie, so I'd be indifferent towards this home video release.

It's not the same movie, it's more than just inserting a few extra scenes unlike other cheezy director's cut title.  This version is much better than the theatrical release.  The movie is darker, grittier and more violent (now an R rating).  Character development is better on this one.  They also took out some scenes.

Star Wars (individual titles), simply because i'm waiting for the complete Boxset if ever there is one.  ;)

Same here. specially Harry Potter. I really couldnt grasp why it became popular.

I couldnt appreciate it as well, I fell almost fell asleep watching some of the Harry Potter movies.

Also waiting for the 6 episode Star Wars box set.

Popular DVDs That I Refuse To Get?

Most of the cheap R3s sold at local video stores, over which everyone seems so agog.

The Rock -- even if it comes packaged with Sean Connery. Too awful of a movie.

Batman Begins-  Somehow i am doubting why they sell new DVD titles cheap? What's the catch?  Guess i am just annoyed with Christian Bale's lisp.  ;D

I remember the R3 release of Hitch with the P499 version and the P895 version.  What gives???

nirvb, if the 2 versions of Hitch bothered you, guess what? there are 3 versions of Kung Fu Hustle available in the market.

i only buy oscar best pictures.

but, right now, i don't want to buy the Braveheart and Patton dvd even though it's about php700. i was hesitating to buy the Titanic dvd before because it lacks special features. and now i'm glad i didn't buy that. a new special edition is out, and that's the one i want.

Right there xeqtionr! It is just the local dvd market telling us what you pay is what you get.....kinda discriminatory in a sense >:(

Pearl Harbor -  I buy a lot of mediocre DVDs.  Even at P299, I refuse to buy this DVD.  I wouldn't be able to respect myself if I did.  When I think of blockbuster cheezy, I think of PH.

Forget about the story, forget about the actors, the 30 minute bombing sequence is all that matters to me.   ;D

Quote
Phantom of the Opera - Even at P425 for a newly release 2 DVD set, I refuse to buy this DVD.  I didn't see it on the big screen either.  I'm a big Phantom fan.  I saw the stage play twice.  I just think there's some things that should remain on stage.

Sometimes it can be an interesting academic exercise to see how the greatest stage musical ever can be made to look pathetic on screen.   ;D

i see where you're coming from.  i also think that its a lousy marketing strategy to sell cheap DVDs by producing at cheaper quality.  while other countries are coming up with "CE's - Collector's Edition's; LE's - Limited Edition's; DE's Deluxe Edition's and UE's Ultimate Edition's" our distributors are coming up with GCE's - Garbage Collector's Edition  :P

hahaha!  ranran, that was nasty but funny!  ;D

now back to the topic:

i'd never buy Phantom of the Opera, Titanic, Pearl Harbour... and Ms Congeniality 1 & 2 + soundtrack boxset eventhough its currently down to 475 from 895 (but i may consider buying it to give away as a gift if the price goes down to 299).

HARHARHARHARHARHAR!!!!!! (Maybe we ought to stick that label in every pirated DVD we see at the local bangketa...!)

But hey, not all of our local DVD distributors release "garbage"-quality DVDs. Let's give praises to Viva Video and Warner Home Video for giving us top-quality (in every sense of the phrase) titles at affordable prices (kaya ubos na tuloy pera ko, buhuhuhuh! :'( ;D).

To the Magnavision people, you still pushing thru with selling those P299.00 copies?

Harry Potter series  -  I really don't know why. I only watched the first Harry Potter movie, and never had the impulse of watching the succeeding movies. Im a sucker for fantasy movies, so, I don't know why I didn't got into the HP bandwagon. Maybe, just maybe, the LOTR trilogy was enough for me  :).

Planet of the Apes -  Well, Tim Burton is one of my favorite directors of all time. I always get the urge of getting a copy of the dvd whenever I see it, but never got to push my self to get it.

No matter what goodies or special features are included in the DVD gift set/collector's edition/special edition/early edition/inside edition/etc., it's the movie that matters. If it's good, it's good. Bad, it's bad.

The Harry Potter series

I don't hate Mr. Potpot. And I've watched all the movies. They're good and really well done. I'm just apathetic towards the DVDs.

The Da Vinci Code

Same as with Potpot, but I'm not that thrilled with the movie -- no matter how many doodads are included in the DVD giftset. I'm not even Catholic enough to be affected in that way.

The Matrix trilogy

The first film is good. The last two exist in a different universe. In other words, the first Matrix is out of their league. That's my nice way of saying Reloaded and Revolutions are both ****.

Daredevil
Elektra
Ghost Rider
Titanic

This goes without saying.

Titanic. I watched it once or twice when it came out in the moviehouse. And it became so popular that I couldn't bear to watch it again after. I only remembered that I had purposely avoided buying the movie when C/S showed it recently.

Da Vinci Code. I'm still trying to come to grips with Tom Hanks and his hair.
