There's something bad about the Php 750 R3 releases of "Canal Image", which includes titles like Rambo, King Kong, The Grifters, The Graduate.
They all exhibit some degree of pixelation when you play them on a large screen. They seem like DVD9s squeezed onto DVD5s.
Plus if you watch Rambo, you get the Artisan logo on the screen when you first place the disc. With King Kong, it's the Paramount copyright warning. The Grifters not only gives you the Miramax logo, but also the green FBI warning you see on R1 Disney titles. For The Graduate, you get the MGM logo.
It seems fishy to get all these different studio logos from DVDs which are allegedly by the same company.
These seem like legalized "MCD" titles.

Yup. You're absolutely right. These are R1 releases that have been transcoded to fit into DVD5 discs. Add Christopher Lee's Dracula and De Niro's Deer Hunter to the list -- the latter being over 180 minutes long which makes me suspect that the R3 release may look like crap. Can anyone confirm this? The packaging identifies it as a dual layer (DVD9) disc by the way.

hi!
can i have my doors dvd replaced? its an r3 canal image release and it is dvd5!!! confirmed it with dvddecrypter.
its like purchasing a bootleg dvd for the price of an original!
can someone help me?

is this a valid reason for returning it?... i'd understand you can reutrn it IF may claim that it is dvd-9 on the cover (they have to... dahil parang you were misled to believe na dual-layer nga sila)... pero paano kung wala?
BTW, i saw the doors dvd sa sale... natuwa lang ako na "pop set" aka "curious metallics" ang paper na ginamit (you can buy this at any National Bookstore!) and not the usual glossy stock used before. ;)
-
If it is not on the case, this is sometimes a label on the disc itself, if it says DVD9 then I'd return it :)

I was about to buy these two classics today. (cheap at P 550) Does anybody have the R3 DVDs ? Any comments?
-
Also saw this King Kong DVD at Astro. Seems bare-featured. Any comments out there? Thanks.

I bought the King Kong disc. It was mastered from an R1 DVD9, and compressed to fit an R3 DVD5. As such, picture exhibits a moderate degree of pixelation, and the image isn't that sharp. Disgusting. It's like a legalized pirated disc.
For other titles with this problem, check this thread (http://www.pinoydvd.com/yabbse/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=20058).

for the price, I wouldn't have minded the lack of features but if it's the quality we're talking about ... I guess I have to skip this one and buy the R1
-
To those who bought The Deer Hunter R3 dvd. Is it anamorphic as stated in back cover? TY.
-
saw some r3 dvds of the graduate, the lion in winter, the grifters, the elephant man, etc at 199 pesos each. are they like the r1 versions (video/audio quality, special features)? hope somebody enlightens me and other possible buyers. tnx po :)
-
No, these are DVD-9's compressed to DVD-5's. The special features are complete, but the video quality ranges from Fair (The Graduate) to Passable (The Grifters) to Poor (The Deer Hunter), due to the compression.

thx mr hankey for the info. appreciate it :)

You're welcome. Suwerte mo, P199 na lang ngayon, di mo pa nabili... as you can see from the earlier posts in this thread, I actually paid P750 for some of these crappy titles a year and a half ago! :'(
