900 bucks! that's too steep for me. Why can't they mimic the 499/550 pricing being done in the recent releases??

Review:

Inventor, astronaut and scientist Dr. Reed Richards' (Ioan Gruffudd) lifelong dream is close to being realized. He is spearheading a trip to outer space, to the center of a cosmic storm. There he hopes to unlock the secrets of the human genetic codes for the benefit of all humanity. Extensive government grant cutbacks nearly dashed the visionary's hopes of the historic flight, until Reed accepted a financing deal with his old college rival, Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon), now a billionaire industrialist. Reed's crew for the mission includes his best friend, astronaut Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis); Sue Storm (Jessica Alba), Von Doom's director of genetic research and Reed's ex-girlfriend; and Sue's hot-headed younger brother, pilot Johnny Storm (Chris Evans). With benefactor Von Doom in tow, the four set off for the exploration of a lifetime. The mission is uneventful ?until Reed discovers a miscalculation of the speed of the approaching storm. Within minutes, the event threshold is upon them. The space station is engulfed by turbulent clouds of cosmic radiation which genetically transforms the crew. Their DNA is irrevocably altered…and so is their future.

Back on earth, the effects of the exposure are quickly revealed. Reed gains the ability to stretch and contort his body into any shape he can imagine and, as leader of the group, is given the name Mr. Fantastic; Sue is able to render herself invisible and to create and project powerful force fields as Invisible Woman; Johnny becomes known as The Human Torch, as he can now engulf his body in flames and take flight at will; and Ben, whose freakish transmutation is the most shocking, becomes an orange-colored, rock-like, superhumanly strong creature, The Thing.

Together, they turn tragedy into triumph and catastrophe into coalition, using their unique and formidable powers to thwart the evil plans of their now steely-eyed, iron-fisted nemesis Dr. Doom and to protect the citizens of New York City against any threat that may arise. Astronauts. Superheroes. Celebrities. To the world, they are the Fantastic Four!

Have you guys seen this article (http://www.dvdactive.com/editorial/articles/fantastic-four-regional-differences.html) at DVDActive that compares the HK R3 with the UK R2 version? It's very weird! The main feature itself is a little different in the two versions.

I suppose our version will be the same as the HK release? But the issue with that is this: the Philippine theatrical release wasn't the Hong Kong version, but the UK version. I remember that in the version shown in local theaters, the Reed-Sue rekindling happened at a walk and not at a planetarium, and that in the finale, Mr. Fantastic redirected water from the hydrant at Dr. Doom. I don't remember Reed stretching during the proposal, though.

It's quite rare for a major commercial film release to have alternate theatrical versions. This is interesting enough for me to double dip for two different-region versions.

Does anyone have the R1 release... and can you please tell us if it's the same as the R2 or the R3 described above?

Hmmm... the UK CD-WoW site is some pesos cheaper than the HK site
I like the digipack version. Thinking of getting one from the HK site

I'll forego the set with figurines. I'm running out of storage space with all those figures from previous sets

digipak is no longer available from cdwow site. the digipak is limited to initial release only. the only way you can get  the digipak edition is through the LE set or through some online stores.

Passed by Video City SM Manila tonight and they already have the Fantastic 4 2-disc DVD for rental but none for sale yet. Wala pa raw silang stock na pambenta. I'm not sure what to call it pero Scanavo yata iyong case kasi pareho ng sa Star Wars R3 DVDs. The clerk doesn't know what the price would be pero malamang P900 iyon kasi 2-disc.

Eh? If that's the case there's no reason to get it from CD-WoW then. Maybe for the DTS track in case it's not available locally?
I guess they haven't modified their site yet. It still says "Digipak Available Now!"

yes, they havent modified their site. email sent to me this morning when i inquired about the digipak case:

Thank you for getting back to me although I am very sorry for any inconvenience caused.

It may be possible that stock of the digi-pak versions had actually been exhausted after yours had been dispatched to you although should you find that when the items arrive, they are not the desired editions, again, please do feel free to return the to us for a full refund upon receipt.

Apologies once again for any inconvenience caused as it certainly wasn’t our intention and thank you for your understanding.

Kind regards,

I suppose our version will be the same as the HK release?

To answer my own question now that I have the Philippine R3, the answer is NO.

Unlike most FOX R3/VIVA releases, which have Chinese, Thai and Tagalog subtitles, the Fantastic 4 released locally only has English, Tagalog and Korean subtitles, and the main feature is as described for the UK-R2 version in the DVDActive article I linked to. Wala yung planetarium scene.

But since the planetarium scene is included among the deleted scenes of Disc Two anyway, I won't have to double dip anymore.

R1 = R3 Phil
R2 = R3 HK

 ???

Post by: Mr. Hankey on Dec 18, 2005 at 03:50 PM
Even within a single region, it varies, so you have to go by country for this title. The movie does not contain the planetarium scene in the versions released in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea and the Philippines.

In all other countries, the movie contains said planetarium scene instead of the walk, and also the other subtle differences noted in the linked article.

i have to agree w/ you on this one...but i didn't have a choice since my daughter was veeeery persistent that we buy it that very minute  ;D

first thing i noticed was the audio output: DTS and DD; can't wait to try it out

@vp_ortiz: i'll try to see if i can watch it this weekend (naka-sked yung viewing....school's out na kasi for my kid

Update: i tested it out earlier and went right to the final fight scene w/ DTS enabled;  very good quality if you ask me, but i couldn't really crank up the volume on my receiver for fear that i might wake up the neighbors  :D;  was able to browse the other dvd as well and went through a couple of features: the deleted scenes and animated scenes.  aliw yung animated since it allows you to use the "angle" button on your player.

all in all, sulit na din ako sa Php 900 spent for this one.

Hey Redge,

I want to thank you for recommending the R3 HK release. I got it through Jasper when he was there and bought it at HMV. Imagine the non digipack and the digipack were similarly priced at HK$179 = 1,250 pesos. According to him it was selling like hotcakes, he also got 1 for himself and several other titles (kainggit nga eh). PQ and SQ (DTS) are topnotch, referrence quality! Its exactly like the one you posted with the chinese sticker on it. Cheers and Happy New Year! ;D

THX1138 got his copy (http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=74238.msg765307#msg765307) for 299. It's single disc while the R1 is a double disc version.

Two things though:

1. Most of the contents on Disc 2 of the R1 extended edition are actually the same as Disc 2 of the R3 regular edition; and

2. Personally, I find the additional scenes in the extended edition a bit unnecessary (http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=63959.msg697909#msg697909). 20 minutes of fluff, no extended action/effects sequences.

Watched this version, really worth it! The additional scenes (20mins) improves the story development. For example, who saved them after the space station was hit by cosmic rays? --Get it while its on sale price. Did I forget to add that its DTS as well? Yup DTS!

Um... no one saved them? The extended scene just shows them waking up then it cuts back to Earth with Grimm waking up on the bed which was on the original release, if I'm not mistaken. Just correct me if I'm wrong.

Have to agree with other people, though, the original cut was a tighter, better paced story. Some of the additions here were awkward, redundant and unecessary (i.e. Reed Richards and Sue Storm's "date" at the planetarium and boardwalk -- what was up with the Wolverine impression? That was from the visual effects gag reel, inappropriate for a main feature).

Otherwise, it was okay. At P199-P299, it's a footnote for the collection.

I would not over analyze Fantastic Four as a movie, as an Oscar wannabee it is not. IMO as a family movie the additional footage helps. It provides less questions for kids watching.  As I said, at its sale price, P199. It is worth every centavo. Think of it as a Halo-Halo with Ice Cream, dag-dag.

It provides less questions for kids watching.  As I said, at its sale price, P199. It is worth every centavo. Think of it as a Halo-Halo with Ice Cream, dag-dag.

Any movie that is adapted from a comic book or video game is not running for an Academy Award for Best Picture -- by default. And it's wrong for people to assume that in the beginning , anyway.  ;) But who knows? We may get a Batman story translated into the cinematic equivalent of Lawrence of Arabia. Mahirap magsalita ng tapos.

Anyway, "IMO", the additional scenes were awkward and unnecessary. Even for a popcorn movie. I didn't say I didn't like it.

Actually there are a few comics based films that can qualify, such as Persepolis, A History of Violence, American Splendor, Ghost World or Road to Perdition. :) These are not in the superhero genre though...

Then I should have added the word "Superhero", then  ;D Wasn't Superman 1 nominated for something? Not sure if it was for Best Picture at the Academy.

And the people over at Rotten Tomatoes dot com have a really good comic book to movies list that's worth a look-see. They have everything from traditional narrative to superhero comic book stories listed.

I just bought the extended edition for 199. It has one disc and it only has one special feature (the Origins of the Silver Surfer featurette).

I see the local market has gotten somewhat spoiled with all these DVD sales / price reductions.
I dont understand what all the fuss is about for a P199-299 release.

If the extended edition had initially come out locally at P550-P750 and then dropped to P199 i doubt if it would go through this much criticism. I mean really at P199 it is less than the price of a movie ticket and popcorn and a drink (not mention parking).
