The Complete Pluto, Volume Two - Expected to include the remaining 22 Pluto shorts, released to theaters from 1947 to 1951. The Volume One tin, released in 2004, held 28 cartoons featuring Mickey's dog, ranging from 1930 to 1947.

The Hardy Boys: The Applegate Mystery - The Hardy Boys, a pair of teenaged brothers with a flair for detective work, were well-known with readers before they were tapped as a serial subject for "The Mickey Mouse Club", Walt's daily variety series, in its second season (1956-57). This DVD will contain the first serial, titled "The Mystery of the Applegate Treasure", which was made up of 20 installments running about 10 minutes each. Disney regulars Tim Considine ("Spin & Marty", The Shaggy Dog) and Tommy Kirk (Old Yeller, The Shaggy Dog) portrayed Frank and Joe Hardy, respectively. The siblings returned for a second serial, "The Mystery of Ghost Farm", composed of 15 episodes that aired during the 1957-58 season. Considine and Kirk recently sat for interviews with Treasures host Leonard Maltin and Hardy Boys fans were contacted for additional bonus features.

Nope. If I remember correctly, it was only Lady and the Tramp that came out with that kind of slipcase. Everything else, with the exception of Snow White (which did not come with one), had a slipcase that opens like a book.

What I hate about Disney is that sometimes, they didn't come with slipcase at all.  Same title, the first batch comes with slipcase but subsequent runs comes without...

As for Walt Disney Treasures, lumaki yata ang coverart ng Wave 6...

What I hate about Disney, is that most of their part 2's sux big time. I rarely could appreciate the stories & plots that seem "pilit" and I have given up buying part 2's even if its a sale.  :(
Title: Re: UPCOMING DISNEY
Post by: techdude on Oct 04, 2006 at 09:56 PM
I hate it if they put a new spin on Classic tale...

If it's their original creation (ie Brother Bear 2, Lady and The Tramp 2), okay lang maski pangit, it's their Intellectual property, they can do whatever they want with it... just that we don't have to buy it if it $ucks... (Sorry, can't find a better word with the same impact).

But if the tale is derived from a classic work or Fairy Tale, even if it's in Public Domain, it just doesn't feel right for them to tamper or add a new chapter to it.  Because, then the viewing public might believe, it's part of the author's vision.

Fairy Tale like Cinderella, they add a second chapter and a third coming next year.

Hunchback of Notre Dame, they already altered the ending of the Victor Hugo classic from a tragedy to a feel-good ending, then they made another DVD to the mix...

OT na tayo...

Will Viva release The Little Mermaid and the Fox and the Hound 25th anniversary edition?.......

Wasn't Snow White already released as a Platinum Edition?
Title: Re: UPCOMING DISNEY
Post by: techdude on Oct 10, 2006 at 01:52 PM
Snow White: It was the first Platinum Edition.  Then discontinued.  It was announced that it will not appear again for seven years, that seven years is through on 2008.  My guess, is that it will launch the HD-DVD or BluRay incarnation of these Disney classics.  And they will again be limited, so even if you have not upgraded to HD-DVD or BluRay by then, you might be tempted to get them for the future...

Again, all speculation...

if they'll ever release snow white PE on 2008 in hd-dvd/bluray, i hope they'll still release it in dvd. i think not all have upgraded yet on 2008. besides, the dvd can be used for multiple viewing purposes  ;)

Update:

I found this link (http://www.amazon.com/White-Dwarfs-Disney-Special-Platinum/dp/B00003CXCQ/sr=1-2/qid=1160471732/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-7178673-0503222?ie=UTF8&s=dvd) from Amazon.com. The R3 that I have looks like this, only a little different kasi R1 ito eh. But the features are almost the same. According to Amazon, Platinum Edition siya, released in 2001. If this is true, maybe this was released much later in the Philippines because I find it hard to believe that they still had stocks of this in-demand DVD last year. Or maybe it was reissued.
Title: Re: UPCOMING DISNEY
Post by: techdude on Oct 10, 2006 at 10:20 PM
Not all countries share the same release schedule as the US.  In the US (R1), Snow White was released in 2001, then discontinued.  I am not sure about local release since I am sort of a 2006 DVD convert. :)  In Japan, Snow White was released sometime this July (not sure if it was a re-release)...

Here in our country, Video CD of Disneys are all around, that it almost feels not that special anymore.  (Note that except for a decline in picture and sound quality, the VCD of Snow White is pretty much the feature itself, since Snow White is in 4:3 ratio, you are not losing any of the picture with the VCD copy).

Actually, many OOP R1 still exists in other areas, the first wave of Walt Disney Treasure (R1)  tins which are being priced multiple times over, can be found in R2-PAL (UK) for a song, minus the tin and the limited collectible certificate.

And Peter Pan was also released as part of the Disney collection set in Japan.  Though, it is probably the OOP Limited/Gold edition print, and not the upcoming Platinum version.

Ultimate Disney had compiled a list of OOP Disney animation titles here:
http://www.ultimatedisney.com/OOP.htm
Title: Re: UPCOMING DISNEY
Post by: techdude on Oct 10, 2006 at 10:34 PM
Previous local 2-discs (ie Beauty and the Beast, Bambi, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, Tarzan) share pretty much the same content as R1, sans the slipcase and the collectibility.

The last two Platinum editions (prior to Little Mermaid) - Cinderella and Lady and the Tramp got one-disc treatment locally.    Keeping my fingers crossed on Little Mermaid R3, though I ordered a R1 for my collection. :)

Out today: Fox and the Hound 25th Anniversary Edition R1
Ultimate Disney says it's pretty much the same as the Gold Edition, blemishes and all.  Not worth the upgrade daw.  Note that the G'old' edition R3, is still aplenty in many Astros for 299 or less. :)

OT: DOWNCOMING DISNEY  ;D

Walt Disney Treasures Wave 6 released - 65,000 units for each of the four titles.  The least of any Wave in the series...

Maybe it is because Wave 5 still had to sell out a year after release.   If Chronological Donald Volume 2 is still available now on Amazon, you can expect a lot more in storage for lesser known titles like Spin and Marty and Elfego Baca.

I feel Wave 6 is better  especially for completist who owns the first Silly Symphony and Complete Pluto Volume 1.

Anyone collecting the new 'Legacy limited' (on nature) series from Disney?

Disney releases are like that.  Most of the time, the first or second batch will come with slipcase.  Then wala na...   Amazon can't help, kasi ganoon binigay sa kanila ng Disney.   So parang incentive to preorder and get the DVD the moment it comes out.

Got mine from Sir Emil.  The first comes with slipcase, my second backup copy comes without (So I transfer  the slipcase on the sealed one).

Like Amazon, Sir Emil, gives me a generous discount...

My Mulan, Alice (Masterpiece), Norte Dame, Incredibles, Sleeping Beauty are all without slipcases. :(  It's kinda annoying at  first, then I just shrug it off, sort of rationalizing, after all it's the movie that's important.  (Glass half-full).  ;)

You might want to hunt for a slipcased copy on the marketplace then sell yours at a lost, if you really want a slipcased copy.  Or buy over 10,000 from Sir Redge's sale and get one free. ;)

Sir, Notre Dame doesnt have the cardboard slipcase so you're safe. One of the best slipcase I have ever seen is Mary Poppin's. Your copy should have one.

Funny... Didnt know that you'll be the one to get the slipcased freebie.

Back to topic:  Disney raked in 77.1 millions dollars for it's limited release straight-to-video midquel Bambi II.  No wonder, Disney loves to these straight to video productions.

Hi... Thanks so much for your kind words; they're very much appreciated. I have been told that there will be no more Treasures, and of course I'm disappointed. I have the exact same questions you do about "unfinished business," and I wish I had answers, but I don't. Nor have I been told what they plan to do under the Legacy imprint.
That this series exists at all is a minor miracle, and I feel grateful that we had a six-year run with it.

Sayang kung sakali.   With a lot of the series still in mid-stream.  But sales seems to be lackluster kasi with 2005 releases still widely available.   Probably why the 2006 issues were cut in half to 65,000@.

Sana they will reconsider.

First things first today: I've got GREAT news for you Disney fans. I've just confirmed this morning with Buena Vista Home Entertainment that their much loved Walt Disney Treasures line of DVDs has NOT been cancelled. In fact, I'm told that at least a couple more waves of releases in the line are planned, with the next due in time for the holidays this year. We'll post additional details as they become available, but rest assured this news comes straight from the studio and it's the real deal. So there you go, folks!

Disney DTV Sequels Coming to a Halt
Author: CHRIS TRIBBEY
Posted: June 25, 2007

The Walt Disney Co. will stop making direct-to-DVD animated sequels for many of its animated classics, according to the Associated Press. The move comes with the restructuring of DisneyToon Studios, which will operate as a separate unit of Walt Disney Animation Studios, said Dick Cook, The Walt Disney Studios chairman.

John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, and Ed Catmull, president of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, assume responsibilities for DisneyToon, with Sharon Morrill, a 15-year Disney employee and president of DisneyToon since 2004, taking new responsibilities in the studio.

“Sharon has been an amazing leader and has done a tremendous job,” Cook said. “DisneyToon Studios has always been an integral part of the Studio and we are pleased that John and Ed will bring their vision in creating exciting original DVD premieres.”

“John and I are truly excited to be working with the talented team at DisneyToon Studios in developing and producing original stories for the home entertainment audience,” Catmull said. He added that the first projects under the revamped DisneyToon line will include Tinkerbell and a new cast of fairy characters.

The Little Mermaid III will be the final DVD-only sequel that will be released under DisneyToon.
Title: Re: UPCOMING DISNEY

I've read from a related article that Steve Jobs (Apple CEO, Pixar co-founder, & the biggest shareholder of Disney) once said that the quality of these direct-to-DVD sequels were quite shameful, or something to that effect. I for one, agree, and except for Lion King 1-1/2, I don't have any other DTV titles in my collection.

Title: Re: UPCOMING DISNEY
Post by: techdude on Jul 02, 2007 at 12:41 PM
I agree that Disney direct-to-DVD movies should be stopped.  They really dilute the franchise name.

Some are truly shameful like Cinderella II: Dreams Come True and the Peter Pan Sequel.  Others like Bambi II and Cinderella: A Twist in Time are okay but in no way, can it live up to the original, so it ended up pulling the name of the original down.

They should still release direct-to-video cartoons under a new name (ie not Disney or Pixar) but of original stories and characters not derivatives of their classics.  I think even Walt do that (cartoon shorts, TV cartoons, etc. - no direct to video then :) ) as training for upcoming animators.

OT:  But sometimes, it really is easier to make money for a mediocre cartoon with a great franchise name than a good new film. This weekend box office receipts is a sign of that.  Dreamworks' Shrek III was panned but grossed over $100 million in it's first weekend, whereas Ratatouille earns near unanimous praise but got less than $50 million...

I would have like Pinocchio first, since it's the only limited issue that have not gotten a 2-disc release (after next March's 101 Dalmatians).

I was disappointed when Sleeping Beauty was tabled for October 2008, since that already have a decent two disc Special Edition that was available for sale as late as 2006.

Happy to see Snow White also temporary slated for October 2008.  My guess is that it will launch Disney's Bluray line of Platinum Editions...

On deck for Walt Disney Treasures collection Wave 8:

" “Destino,” began in 1946 as a collaboration between Walt Disney and the famed surrealist painter Salvador Dali. A first-hand example of Disney’s interest in avant garde and experimental work in animation, “Destino” was to be awash with Dali’s iconic melting clocks, marching ants and floating eyeballs. However, “Destino” was not completed at that time.  In 2003 it was rediscovered by Walt’s nephew, Roy E. Disney, who took on the challenge of bringing the creation of these two great artists to fruition.  In addition to the completed “Destino”, this exciting addition to the Walt Disney Treasures line also includes an all-new feature-length documentary that examines the surprising partnership between Dali and Disney plus two new featurettes; “The Disney That Almost Was,” an examination of the studio’s unfinished projects; and “Encounters with Walt,” which addresses the surprisingly diverse group of celebrities and artists who were attracted to Walt Disney’s early work.

Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow,” which first aired as three separate episodes on Disney’s weekly TV show under the title “The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh,” was edited for theatrical releases in England and the U.S. This DVD set includes all three of the original TV episodes plus the theatrical version of the film that was released in England.

Disney fans will delight in “Chronological Donald, Volume 4,” which includes 31 classic shorts starring Donald Duck. Each of these meticulously animated adventures was created between 1951 and 1961 and has rarely been seen.  All of Donald’s CinemaScope shorts will be presented in their original widescreen aspect ratio for the first time on video.

Coming November 11, 2008.  A month earlier than previous Treasures waves which were mostly December releases.

Wonder how long this series will continue, considering that by 2009, the focus could shift to high-def and Blu-ray discs. My guess is that it will last one final wave (Wave 9) before they restart the cycle all over with blu-ray versions of the same treasures...
