i dunno if this is the same with you, guys, but whenever i watch a dvd movie, i always turn the (english) subtitles on (or caption). but when watching in movie theaters, i can live without the subtitles...
-
I do prefer watching dvds with subtitles on. How I wished I could even understand Chinese subtitles. Sometimes I even turn the closed captions sa TV to have the feel of watching with subtitles(mabagal nga lang).
-
having subtitles on during a preview of "Master n Commander" is a MUST! ;D kinakain nila mga words habang nagsasalita. >:(
FOr me I hate having subtitles on dahil instead na concentrate ka sa movie itself, naging pagbasa ang priority mo. ;D
-
me naman i'm like addicted to these subtitles... sometimes i even choose a different audio language and turn on the english sub ;D
-
Personally, I prefer watching foreign (non-english) movies in their original audio with english subtitle and english movies with subtitle off. But I find the subtitle feature very useful when the dialog seems muddled. My kids, though, always watch with english subs on. I think it helps them practice reading and spelling. :)
-
ako din, i prefer watching DVDs with the english subtitles on. it helps a lot with my comprehension of the film, most especially for movies, whose stars eat their words while giving their dialogues...e.g. Sylvester Stallone and some british actors :) :)
-
Ako I prefer watching with the english subtitles ON kasi sometimes I cannot seem to understand what they are saying.
For concert dvds naman, always with subtitles please ... para pwede din kumanta ;D
-
Ako rin I watch with the subtitles on most of the time, para I don't miss anything. Weird, dami palang ganun din ;D Like JhunDV, I also watch foreign language movies in their original audio, even if an English track is available, so subtitles in that case is a must of course.. and then there's the pikey talk on Snatch.. ;)
It's undisputed.. concert queen ka talaga diver! LOL ;D
-
O nga yong Snatch :) Thank goodness for subtitles. Wish I was able to watch this on DVD.Sa cable ko napanood with regular tv speakers. You just can't imagine...
-
If I watch the movie the first time in DVD, assured with subtitles on yan but when I watch it the 2nd or 3rd time (w/c I seldom do) I do not turn on the subtitles anymore
-
Recently, I always turn-on the subtitles. Kasi my brother in law always ask me to turn it on every he watches with me. Nasanay na tuloy ako. Made it easy to understand what they are saying. wala na yung "ano daw?" ;D
-
For me subtitles are "off" if I'm watching the movie for the first time para maka concentrate sa movie. Second time around naka on na if hindi ko masyado naintindihan but seldom lang, very big chance if its a brit film. ;)
-
Reefshark- Baliktad pala tayo manood ng DVD...oh well as long as you enjoy them...that's the most important part...minsan enjoy nalang maski di naiintidihan. ;D ;D ;D
-
me... i watch my dvd with the subtiltes "OFF" on the first viewing to enjoy the cinematics talaga...
then "ON" for the second viewing para ma-digest ko yung story (but this happened about 1 week or a month later). ;)
-
like the majority, have made it a habit to turn the subtitle ON... mas na-a-appreciate ko yung takbo ng story...
medyo OT pero i guess most of us here has their own experiences with pdvd subtitles... yung mga drama nagiging comedy... if you know what i mean. ;D
-
I can do without the subtitles, but they ARE handy for mumbled dialogue. And when my daughter wanted to learn the lyrics to all the "Labyrinth" songs. ;D
-
Have you guys tried watching Ninja Scroll series HK dvds? They have invented a lot of new english words, I guess my Collins dictionary is obsolete.
-
For me parating naka-off yung subtitles kc gus2 ko nakafocus tlga dun sa movie. Pag naka-on kc I can't help reading it eh :) Medyo nawawala 2loy yung attention ko sa ibang details ng movie. I only turn it on pag may nde ako maintindihan sa dialogue.
-
Do you watch your DVDs with subtitles on, or do you prefer to watch it without?
-
Off. I get distracted when there are lines moving sa ilalim ng screen ;)
-
it actually depends on the movie. There are some movies that I have a little difficulty understanding the dialog, so I turn on the subtitles. Or when I watch a DVD for the second time, subtitles already turned off ;D.
And, sometimes.. I find the closed captions more fun, as they are not always placed at the bottom of the screen. ;)
-
most of the time i watch with subtitles off....but when i could not understand the dialogue....i would turn the subs on ;D
but i do get distracted if the subtitles are in tagalog (like the R3 I,Robot) coz i once tried to do this, but the tagalog translation drives me crazy :P
-
Off unless watching movies of a foreign language and no I don't consider english as a foreign language. ;D
-
"it actually depends on the movie. There are some movies that I have a little difficulty understanding the dialog, so I turn on the subtitles."
from jun_p on January 7 2005.
I DO THE SAME :)
-
I always watch DVDs with subtitles ON (exceptions are those DVDs that have horrendous English subs). It saves me the effort of having to rewind a scene if I don't understand the dialogue. When watching late at night, I sometimes have to turn the volume down, so, I rely heavily on subs.
-
No subs for me, except for foreign languages other than English. I easily get distracted by subs but I prefer watching Chinese movies or Passion of the Christ with subs rather than have them dubbed. I like watching these types of movies in their original form. :)
-
ON most of the time.
-
it's on the first time i watch it, lalu na kapag medyo malalim ang movie and i happened to see it in a crappy theatre that had a lousy sound system. let's face it, di naman lahat ng actors sa movie e malinaw magsalita o minsan masyadong inaudible yung sinabi nila tapos maingay pa katabi mo, patay ka na. once ive seen it with the subs on, ala na the second viewings. it's too distracting kasi.
-
I watch with the SUBTITLES ON most of the time.
For the MOVIE, RATCATCHER although in English, heavy Scottish accent with coloquial terms, the subtitles are required because it also translates the locally used terms.
:)
-
Yup on the first time I have watched that movie. But from the 2nd or so reruns no subs for me. Exceptions are movies like Trainspotting where the English accent is really ??? what'd he say?
-
on.. bingi po ako.. ;D
-
On. Para di kailangang malakas ang audio. :D
-
-
bingi din ako ...........on ;D
-
subs on here pag TV lang. pag naka HT Setup, no subs.
:D 8)
-
i turn it ON when i'm watching with my wife. off when i am watching alone and the volume is like watching in movie theatres para enjoy :)
-
I agree that sometimes the dialogues get pretty hard to understand (as if the actors are mumbling) so i watch with the subs ON. :)
-
depends...
pag kailangan mahina yung volume like natutulog na si baby e kailangan ON...
pag kasama si kuya who is a deaf/mute e syempre ON.
pag ako lang e OFF..
-
I usually watch with the subtitles on since I can't clearly hear the dialog. Will a center speaker help? I'm not really into loud noises & the surround sound experience. I just want crisp dialog. What's the best way to achieve this?

getting a center speaker (plus surrounds and 5.1++ capable hardware) will certainly do the trick. 5.1 (DTS and DD) encoded audio specifically channels main dialogue into center speakers. if you only have surrounds, you only get a phantom center, that is, your surrounds mimic the effect of having a center, which is usually undesirable.
-
ON on my first viewing. Especially if it's a favorite movie of mine. Then when I'm satisfied that I understood absolutely everything what my favorite character(s) said, I switch it off the next time I watch it. I usually turn it ON pala pag British ang mga actors.
-
same here....normally first time viewing will be on & turn it off subsequent viewing (if any) :D
-
mas maganda kung me subtitles para maintindihan kung ano mismo ang sinasabi. lalo na pag slang, british atmay mag terms na di natin alam ang spelling o kaya inimbento lang dun sa movie na yun, e.g. paparazzo in la dolce vita, ratso rizzo in midnight cowboy at kung english dubbed ang movie tulad ng tae guk gi from south korea
-
DEFINITELY OFF!!! I really have no use for this feature except for non-English movies
-
On. Para di kailangang malakas ang audio. :D
In addition, I also appreciate dvds which offer subtitles for their commentary track. The volume of some commentary tracks are so soft that I'd have to turn up the volume just to hear the director/cast/crew talk. :D
-

In the case of Kung Fu Hustle, you really need the subtitle for the commentary since the track is in Mandarin.
-
-
It depends on the movie like Lord of the Rings wherein there are so many "foreign" (elves and dwarves) languages which is hard to understand. But for comedies like 50 first dates, i turn the subtitle off.
-
yup yup...normally pag dailogue intensive wherein dun halos nabubuo story i usually turn it on....minsan kasi di maintindihan. but for comedies usually off nga. ;D ;D
-
If I'm watching a movie wherein most actors are British, I always turn it ON on the first 3 viewings... I find it hard to get use to the thick accent sometimes...
-
I find it hard to get use to the thick accent sometimes...
Yeah right! :)
-
almost always "ON"
-
off as much as possible as I find them distracting. only switch them on if I don't understand something or accent is thick.
-
always on, that's why when I rent I try to get it on DVD format.
-
almost always "on"
-
Subtitles on.
-
ON especially pag heavily accented ang mga dialogues.
-
There are some lines w/ch actors mumble the words, mostly in gangster flicks, then i turn subtitles just to know what they said.
For black flicks naman, I was raised on Chicago so talking slang and listening to it ain't a damn thing but a walk in the park. You best be feelin that!
-
Also forgot to mention I can understand Cantones, Fookien, Chinese and a lil bit off Jap so no need for that subtitle that much, puera na lang pag nabingi ako.
-
If it's action movie, it's OFF. If drama or any movie with lot's of dialogue or court proceedings I normally turn it ON para madaling maintindihan.
-
Definitely on for the wifey's Korean movies. Also hard to understand British films like Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels and Trainspotting...
-
On - for better understanding the lines. Just like in Harry Potter movies (since i did not read the book).
And also some scenes they whisper thru their dialogues naku nalintikan na mas-lalo ng di mo ma-gets ang sinasab-sab nung tao.
-
Subtitles on. That's something that VCDs don't have, aside from audio-video quality. ;D
I agree with you, some actors eat their words. Some speak like they're whispering (Steven Seagal), some can't speak fluently English because they have different native language accent (Jackie Chan). Subtitles make me understand what they're saying.
I also turn the subtitles on on Chinese and Korean movies.
-
Generally OFF unless I don't understand a linet that was uttered. So I play it back then turn the subtitles on.
But some English-language films sometimes need to have the subtitles on such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (coz they were speaking a dialect) and The Ratcatcher (coz it was a dialect too).
-
Sometimes on, sometimes off. Pag on kasi, nakaconcentrate yung eyes mo sa pag-basa ng subtitles rather than on the movie itself.
-
pag first time ko panorin yung movie, i turn it on...
if i feel like watching it again...off na
-
On for non-English movies.. (except Filipino movies of course)
Off for English movies..
-
pag first time ko panorin yung movie, i turn it on...
if i feel like watching it again...off na
Same here :)
-
Always on for me. Pero off pag love scenes. ;D
-
pag first time ko panorin yung movie, i turn it on...
if i feel like watching it again...off na
same here, at first, for better understanding... then, to see the action better.... sometimes its hard to read the caption at the same time the action. ;D
-
I turn it on the first time. I turn it off during subsequent viewings.
-
Let's get it ON! :)
-
OFF. unless p*(&%$$# DVD at malabo yung audio ;D
-
OFF. unless p*(&%$$# DVD at malabo yung audio ;D
naku... baka maiba istorya ser nung pinapanood nyo pag nagrely ka sa subtitle :D
-
normally ON
-
It depends on the accent of the characters, the movie itself and language of course.
American OFF, English/European ON, Others ON
If the plot has a lot of twists and turns...ON
Hard to figure out movies...ON for the first time.
-
Off: Kapag ako lang mag isa nanonood at malakas volume, for me kasi nawawala focus ko sa movie, minsan di mo na sya maappreciate kasi focused ka sa subs pag; nagflash back ka about the movie e parang blur hehehe ;D
On: Kapag di english or tagalog, saka lalo na pag nasa room at tulog na si esmi, dun lang ako naggamit ng subs :D
-
Usually, I prefer not to have subtitles when watching a movie.
If ever, I will be watching the movie the second time around, that is the time that I will enable the subtitle
But in rare instances, while watching stallone's films, I always enable the subtitle on function (hirap kasi intindihin ng dialogue ni stallone)
-
OFF pag kabisado ko na :)
-
100% yes except for tagalog movies
-
I prefer it na naka-ON...

-
subtitles off for me. naguguluhan ako kung english siya tpos naka-on pa un subtitles.. napapatingin ako sa subtitle hindi ako makaconcentrate sa movie.
-

me too... all my movie folders have their corresponding srt files.

mas nakakatawa ang hentai kapag may subs...hehe
Japanese (cultural) lesson for today...iba ang "level" ng "ih ih" at "oh oh", in case natatawa/nagtataka kayo kung bakit "ih" ang dialogue.
back to topic, my wife can expertly synch to milliseconds kahit MINUTES ang layo ng subs and dialogue. hehe
-

LOL
-
before I prefer it to be OFF coz it blocks some parts of the screen, lately I like it to be ON ???
Is it the age showing ;D
-
mabuhay!
If i am the only person who is watching a movie definitely, i turn the subtitle off.
Kaso.....lagi kong kasama ang uncle kong 70+ years old and almost bingi na......kaya kailangan kong i-on.
-
ON
-
On but when im done with it, off would be preferable.
-
Since i am living with an aunt who's 70 plus and medyo conservative, di ako maka-set sa volume ng 2.1 speaker ko sa audible level ang dialog. Naririnig din naman, pero, di talaga ganun kalinaw as with a regular setting, so i usually turn the subtitles on.
Sana palarin next year, para maka move na ako sa sariling place..hehehe..it's ironic, i build other peoples house, but i don't have my own place.
So yes, it is an ON for me.

Its pretty difficult to understand the movie kung walang subs,...
For me its a "must" na naka-on ang subs,...

tawag sa mga tulad natin bro... "accent impaired". there are american/english words that if not spoken clearly, we would have difficulties understanding.
-
I prefer watching a movie with the subtitles on. This makes me easier to understand what the characters are saying especially when my kids are around :D
But then if I decide to watch the same movie again, I turn the function off. Para ma-exercise naman English-listening skills ko :D
-
OFF sa akin. i get distracted with the subtitle and miss the whole view of the screen.
-
ON din sakin especially pag british movies pinapanood ko.. :D
-
ON, especially for Stallone and Statham
-
ON.CHINESE MOVIES kasi pinapanood ko ;D ;D
-
Anyone seen a subtitled high def porno? ;D
-
OFF
-
Anyone seen a subtitled high def porno? ;D
hindi na siguro kelangan sir. maiintindihan naman yan even with your eyes closed ;D
-
Anyone seen a subtitled high def porno? ;D
sigurado eto lang ang mababasa mo....ah ah ah oh oh oh ;D ;D ;D

tawag sa mga tulad natin bro... "accent impaired". there are american/english words that if not spoken clearly, we would have difficulties understanding.
Thanks for the info sir,...
-
Anyone seen a subtitled high def porno? ;D
Its like being in on the action sir on a 1080p video,... :P
-
Mahirap i-subtitle ang ungol!! Baki di magsync. ;D ;D ;D
-
Pero it would be hilarious to read those horny words for grown up men - especially married men.
-
Anyone seen a subtitled high def porno? ;D
me french and spanish language din kaya ito? ;D
-
me french and spanish language din kaya ito? ;D
French: Oui, Oui!
Spanish: Si, Si!

Off

ganito din ako kaya laging ON ang subtitle when watching a movie.
Even sa Planet Earth and other BBC docus, gusto ko naka-ON. lalo pag sinasabi yung name ng mga plants and animals, nakakatuto pa. ;D
-
on ;)
-
off kapag first time to watch the movie. on kapag balikan muna. sarap manuod kapag full mode ung screen i get distracted kasi kapag may subs eh
-
I prefer really with subs on while you can understand the whole depth of the story.
-
first time seeing the movie off then "on" tapos second time on na. :D
-
A quentin tarantino movie is nice to watch without subtitles at first pero if I watch it again, I want it on kasi the dialogue is really fun and I like quoting characters. hehe
-
on
-
i prefer watching without subtitles. i only turn the subtitles on when i can barely hear the dialogues.
-
Off
-
off. on only kapag di pwede lakasan (like tulog na lahat at nagagalit kapag maingay).
-
on if possible. lalo na sa mga movie na kumplikado ang storylines.
-
always on, i find it easier to understand the movie with them on :) having said that, i can also do without them in cinemas. weird no? :)
-
On. To better understand their dialogues minsan kasi ang bilis nila magsalita hehe
-
If the audio is already in English or Tagalog, I turn it off coz it's distracting to see the words on the screen.
But if the audio is not English or Tagalog, then no choice but to have the subtitles on. But first time watching the movie, I cannot follow the plot properly so I watch it again just so the video and the subtitle sinks in.
-
For me parating naka-off yung subtitles kc gus2 ko nakafocus tlga dun sa movie. Pag naka-on kc I can't help reading it eh :) Medyo nawawala 2loy yung attention ko sa ibang details ng movie. I only turn it on pag may nde ako maintindihan sa dialogue.

Just want to ask. Is Master & Commander a good movie worth buying? Thanks & God bless you.
on topic, yup i watch with subtitles on, sometimes off for ear training....
-
Sirs,
we have a onkyo ht-R56o
but has no speakers, what local speakers would you recommend for replacement. thanks...
tibo
-
Definitely w/ subtitles, maybe it has become a habit...?
Cheers
-
alam na...
kapag salitang banyaga lagin ON ang subtitle siyempre...
-

ganon talaga eh.di kasi sanay ung tenga natin sa ibang lengwahe
-
naka "ON" palagi .. ???
-
On, kasi minsan mabilis magsalita yung nasa pelikula.
-
Mabuhay!
itong magandang tanong "kapag "ehem" ba ang pinapanood kailangan naka-ON ang subtitle? (joke lang po: sorry admins)
back to the topic: off most of the time para feeling nasa sinehan. ;D
-

I would watch and listen, rather than read. ;)
-
I would watch and listen, rather than read. ;)
Remove subtitles and pump up the volume!
-
On for me
-
on for both movies and tv series
-
On for me also, may mga important details kasi na di mo magegets kung walang subtitle. May subtitle na pang hearing impaired at merong removed yung pang HI. ;D
-
On - pag chinese movies papanuorin
Off - pag Tagalog/English movies ;D
-
On - para sure na walang "Ano daw?" moment... =)
-
On usually when watching at night para Hindi malakas volume but definitively off pag umaga for the full theater experience!
-
-
when watching with headphones/earphones off - kapag malayo ang screen at hindi pede itodo volume - on.
-
On para maintindihan ng husto. In most cases, napanood na kasi sa cinema kaya sa DVD viewing, subtitle is on.
