Title: Pinoy Teen-Angst Flicks
Post by: keating on Jan 16, 2006 at 12:27 PM
Hollywood has its own John Hughes & Joel Schumacher, let's have our very own in reminiscing those youth-oriented movies that we saw during our heyday.

No mentioning of age, please.  ;D

BATCH 81 (Mike de Leon)
BAGETS (Maryo J. delos Reyes)
THE GRADUATES (Ishmael Bernal)
UNDERAGE (Joey Gosiengfiao)
PARE KO (Jose Javier Reyes)
BURGIS (Lino Brocka)
GANGLAND (Peque Gallaga/Lorenzo Reyes)

i would consider Summer Holiday  as one of these films... medyo nakalito nga dahil walang kinalaman ang title ng movie sa buong pelikula. siguro pinapalitan lang ni Mother Lily ang title kay Mel Chionglo who directed the film...

Jojo how would you rate Abaya's BOYSTOWN?

she had good intentions... the problem was the plot itself. Joey Reyes, the films' writer cannot decide on where the story should go... hindi na lang niya hinati ang kuwento between Gabby & William. even an outstanding director cannot save a lackluster script. maybe beacuse the film was shown months after the success of Bilibid Boys...

Joey Reyes & Marilou can't work really in one tandem. Remember SENSUAL, also? And yeah with Mother's constant dictation, like what she did to that Brocka movie, the movie goes nowhere.

But if you compare the Teen-Angst movies of the 80's to the movies today, the level is too far, or I'm just faithful to my generation.  ;)

Have you seen Gosiengfiao's UNDERAGE, recently, Jo?

in my opinion, Joey & Marilou did a great job with Sensual. it's one of those rare coming of age movies. unfortunately when the movie was shown during the height of People's Power it was a huge flop & suffered severe cuts from the Board Of Censors, luckily though the vhs copy was the uncut version which made the film much better. it had fine performances from Charito Solis, Chanda Romero & Lara Jacinto. Lito Gruet who cannot act to save his life was competent enough here. i also love those teenage flicks of the 80's it was also my era...

I just saw UNDERAGE last weekend. Its like I was watching a close-up commercial with sense and moral ethics. Almost all of the shots are awesome and gorgeous, man. The camera loves very well, the three leads. Even the villains look wonderful.  ;D

Joey was great in making these teenage flicks... even films like  Where Love Has Gone was fun to watch.

And who would think that those movies, will have some courtroom scenes? Mark Gil was right, there is intelligence on those Gosiengfiao flicks.

i guess most of his films had courtroom scenes especially near the end as some sort of resolution... i remember that scene with Mark Gil in Underage also Snooky & Kristine Garcia's courtroom scene in Where Love Has Gone.

William Martinez was uncredited for the story of BAGETS which Jake Tordesillas wrote. Ishmael Bernal was set to direct it, but the project went to Viva Films.
