I think this is in partnership with Warner.  Dreamworks release is for North America and Warner is in charge for international releases.

From early reports, this has been announced as single disc with making-of featurette, commentary and trailer only in all territories. Hopefully mauna din tayo with a 2-disc edition, but I haven't seen any specs for such.

From dvdactive.com

Warner Home Video has announced the region two release of  The Island which stars Ewan McGreggor. The disc will be available to own from the 9th of January 2006, priced at around £17.99. The disc will feature an anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, a 'Making of The Island' featurette, the theatrical trailer and a DVD-Rom link to a director's commentary. <--- ???

WHV Philippines confirmed that The Island will be released on January 12. It is indeed a single disc edition with the same specs as the R2 version mentioned above. Retail price has been set at Php499.

Apparently, both formats have to be released at the same time.

Strange new policy. That wasn't the case in the past, right? VCDs ahead of DVDs were the norm for Warner and most other companies. I'm sure that was the case for Dominion, Scooby-Doo 2, Fantastic Four, etc.

Post by: firewired on Jan 12, 2006 at 10:29 AM
Yup, strange explanation but it doesn't sound like a fixed policy. Maybe they should just eliminate VCDs altogether and bring down their prices to Php299 permanently...  ;D

Anyway, here's the release profile of The Island:

Format: DVD
Language: English
Subtitle: English, Chinese
Special Features: Making of The Island, ROM-enabled Director's Commentary  ???
Region: 3
No. of Discs: 1
Run Time: 126 mins

The release summary Warner provided confirms that this is a 1-disc DVD release similar to the HK version. Strange. Hopefully it's not a label error.

Regarding the earlier release, they did say mid this week but the fact that it may be out by today is a good thing.

It's a single disc release according to Warner. As far as Marketing knows, there were no 2-disc labels printed so they're not sure how something like that happened. They want to know what Astro branch you saw this release in.

Title: Re: The Island

The sticker price tag is the same one they used for A Very Long Engagement, and the sticker says "2-Disc." Siguro nagtitipid, may tira pa nung lumang sticker.  ;D No misprint on the the actual cover art.

Three comments, though:

1. The cover art is completely different from the R1:

R1:                       R3:
(http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000BLEO8W.02._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg)    (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000CD9U9C.08.MZZZZZZZ.jpg)

2. Unlike the R1, this has NO DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY. I'm guessing that's why the disc's UPC is different from the R1 (Warner's UPCs usually match across regions).

3. I agree with aszamora, the case they used is really low quality, like the one they used for Scooby-Doo 2 or the ugly ones Magna used to use two years ago, that most of us were complaining about - the plastic is crumpled.

Bought this one during lunch time.  I haven't checked out the content but judging by the packaging, it seems this is the first warner title in a long while that I feel is not worth the price tag.

I must say it's kinda disappointing.  They used a low quality case.

To be honest, I almost had to return this and have it exchanged with The Terminal 2disc kahit lugi ako ng 20 bucks.

But I liked the movie so I stuck with it.

Nope. English DD 5.1 and Thai DD 5.1.

I don't think the R1 or R2 versions have a DTS track, either.

even worse than recent releases like charlie and the chocolate factory and polar express?

It's the same brand as the one used for "Charlie," but I picked up several copies and they all had crumple lines along the back cover area. At least yung sa "Charlie," walang lukot.

I liked the movie.  Haven't pass by astro yet.  Maybe i get the r1 nalang. hehe.  But seriously.  magna and warner packaging is getting worst.  Dahil syempre sa pagtitipid.hong kong warner is better than here.  locally packed na kasi ang warner. the dvd lang ang import.  those previous packaging na parang sa cigarette cases are full import. pag Shrinkwarp lang local na yun.  Syempre sasabihin ng taga warner na import yum because their boss sez so. at bawal sabihin na locally packed. This info btw is from a warner employee.

It's a DVD9 release. Just to put your minds at ease, none of the local DVD replicators have been certified by Warner to replicate discs locally -- much less downgrade any title to DVD5. They're very particular about disc quality. I know that there've been several attempts to sell the idea of re-encoded discs for the local market but none of these made it past the first round of presentations.

Package printing however, is done locally. Which sucks.

The original U.S. Press Release for this title said the DVD would be released with a DVD-Rom Web Link to a Podcast Commentary, but they eventually changed it to "DVD Commentary Included". Maybe the R3 discs were among the initial batches pressed that have this link instead of an actual commentary track on the discs themselves.

Will be back later if I find it. My desktop PC is locked to R1, and this R3 disc just froze my drive. Will need to reboot this computer, and try the disc on my laptop.

Yes, that was it.  :)

How to Access the Director's Commentary for "The Island":

1. Insert "The Island" DVD into your DVD ROM drive.

2. If you haven't installed InterActual Player, follow the prompts and do so. If InterActual Player is already on your computer, you will automatically be taken to this screen:

(http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/5239/warner2ls.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

3. Click on "Special Events." This web page will open in a new window:

(http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/4907/islandcommentary1vw.jpg) (http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/4907/islandcommentary1vw.jpg)

(Click on above image to see it full-sized.)

4. Follow the directions on that screen... and there you go.  :)

Boy, Warner should pay me for this!  ;D

So it is an interactual feature, like I suspected.
I get most feature film downloads from the interactual features in the discs.
Great for various what-have-you's about the film.
Some features are already on disc while others are online.

PowerDVD & WinDVD already comes with the Interactual player otherwise get the latest version.

I've been waiting for this release for a while since I missed watching it in the theaters and I was happy to find it yeseterday at Tower Records QC. However, all their copies had the two disc sticker on them but when I reached for one the packaging was cheap and conspicuously light. I ended up having them open one first and sure enough it only had one disc. I held off on the purchase thinking that there's probably a real 2 disc version available elsewhere. (I garner from this thread that this is sadly not the case...) Anyone here know if and when a 2 disc version will be released?

Madami sigurong magagalit na customer because of this. I would have been pretty mad if I bought the DVD and opened it to see just one disc!

Bought this yesterday. If it wasn't for this forum, I'd be surprised to see just 1 disc instead of 2 as indicated in the sticker. Loved the movie but somehow, after watching it, feeling ko bitin ung DVD since the only special feature is a 15 minute "making of". I just wish they had inserts.

it's very curious how producers decided on what to inlcude in this release if it did 'FLOP'.  i know other producers would try to improve the DVD contents and releases to make up for the lost sales in the box office.   ::)

I find this to be VERY hard to believe. It might be plausible for a smaller film but this definitely does not apply to a modern big budget flick like this one. It's well known that this movie underperformed in the theaters which is precisely why this will be an intentional "double-dip" by the studio. Get as many sales from the single disc then sell the two-discer (possibly a "director's cut") at a later date to screw over the hardcore fans.

Perhaps I wasn't too clear on what I said before. What I meant to say is that, based on my internet research on the different DVD versions for "The Island" (R1, R2, R3, etc.), all of them do not have extensive features in them. So if Warner were to release a special edition DVD for this to include all the features from all the different regions, it seems there isn't enough to fill two discs. This doesn't necessarily mean that they lack the material. Warner must have opted not to release them yet. Maybe in the future, yes, in DVD or in another format. But as I said, based on available material from all versions, a two-disc DVD is unlikely.

By the way, I watched this release yesterday. The PQ & AQ are indeed good. Especially the AQ. And that's just in DD. Imagine if they pumped it up to DTS pa!

it seems that your into PQ and SQ.  Well all of us do.  It's just the gears you use to tell the difference.  But when HD DVD or Blu ray arrrives.  All would be standard 1080p.  But will there be higher than 1080p.  Lets say 2160p?  It will give you vertigo. :)

Back to the topic.  Haven't watched this yet.  But from the trailer.  I'm expecting it to give you Ht a workout.  I also like movies with lots of effects.  It gives you adrenalin rush. :)
