I mean, I'm not even working full-time nowadays, and yet I find my time so occupied with various responsibilities (write articles, do errands, pick up/drop off family members, attend social functions, attend to kids' needs, put them to bed, etc.) that by the time I have a free moment to do my leisure stuff (DVD-watching included), it's already past 11:00 p.m. At that point I no longer have the strength, let alone the mood, to watch a full-length movie on DVD. So these days I end up watching a 24-minute episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion, and/or posting a few messages on this board, before nodding off.
Does anyone else have this difficulty fitting the DVD viewing into their hectic schedules?
I've been trying to find the time to watch my Nurse Betty DVD for about three weeks now, without success.
-
i know what you mean....
and with the golf season, my dvd time has even gotten shorter.....
i would usually watch my dvd's at the end of the day and just be contented with 3 to 4 hours of sleep.....
and kasabihan nga eh....you will have all the time to sleep when you get old.... ;)
-
I usually find time. I'm able to to 2 to 3DVDs a week. And that means sitting there just watching and not doing anything else. But when I'm working, oftentimes a commentary would be on, or supplemental materials like documentaries.
I have to find time to watch them because if work is all I do I'd go nuts man. :P
-
I have absolutely nothing to contribute to the topic that hasn't already been posted. All I can do is nod my head and say: "True, So True".
I have to work in order to buy my DVDs, but I can't watch my DVDs because I have work. I feel as if I've painted myself in a corner.
Fortunately, there's a small 3-hour window during the weekends that I use to watch some of my DVDs.
-
and kasabihan nga eh....you will have all the time to sleep when you get old...
Or as the Warren Zevon song goes, "I'll sleep when I'm dead." ;)
-
I'll probably have the time to watch my collection and scan all its features during long vacation leaves from work. At least I'll have something to do, without spending travel money.
-
After I finished my [work]routine. I will hide at the storage room with my portable player. Ayos na!
-
barrid, I sincerely wish I had your freedom to watch after finishing work. Unfortunately, all the jobs I've had are the type where either the boss can easily see my desk, or I have to be out on assignment the entire day.
Now, even though I'm freelancing, it's as if I'm working for my family. Mas lalo nang wala akong panahon.
* * * * * * * * *
Is there even physically enough time for us to thoroughly go through all the features of our collections? Take mine as an example: I currently have 80+ DVDs. Let's estimate that it takes an average of four hours(main feature plus extras) to fully exhaust each disc. So four hours X 80 discs = 320 hours. That's 27.6 days' of watching DVDs straight. Assuming each of us can devote at least one day a week to watching DVDs, it would take six months to go through 80+ discs.
But our collections aren't static; we are constantly acquiring new discs. So unless we are religious about our watching, in practical terms many of us will never get the chance to fully appreciate our collections, unless we quit our jobs or opt for early retirement.
So l therefore conculde that we should all quit our jobs or retire early and devote our lives to watching DVDs! ;)
-
Well, they say you can sleep all you like when you're old, but that doesn't mean you can't watch DVDs in between. ;)
(and hopefully with pension money to buy more) ;D
I usually watch my DVDs right after work, and even while eating my dinner so as not to waste any time. Sometimes I have the patience to watch 2-3 DVDs a night, all of which I have watched several times before.
-
I have a regular late-to-five job so I don't get to watch DVDs on weeknights as I'm also a TV junkie. I watch them on weekends when my mom's usually not at home. I can turn up the volume without my mom telling me to turn it down everytime she hears explosions or gunfire. BTW, she asked me lately if there are DVDs that play only music, I made the sign of the cross and shouted, "She has insights!" Anyway, long vacations are perfect time to catch up with your or your friend's collection (Pahiram ulit arcturs). ;)
-
Sometimes, I just give in to temptation and call in sick just to be able to catch up on my DVD watching.
Take today for instance....I couldn't stop watching The Sopranos so the office will just have to do without me for a day. :P
-
I've been trying to find the time to watch my Nurse Betty DVD for about three weeks now, without success.
Update: this afternoon my wife and I tried to watch Nurse Betty. We had to stop at the halfway point, because our youngest daughter woke up from her nap, and our middle daughter got tired of watching videos downstairs and came up to stay in our room, and our oldest boy also came in to play video games in our room...and you can't exactly watch an R-rated film like Nurse Betty (graphic violence, harsh language) with kids in the room...so we're going to try again later tonight, although my wife is probably going to fall asleep early and I want to get some work done...sigh...see how tough it is to find the time to watch one DVD?
-
Gonz, my sentiments (and situation) exactly. We've given up trying to watch DVDs on weekdays. If we try to watch at night, either I or Firewired falls asleep one-third into the movie. If we try to watch at any other time of day, the Little One is bound to interrupt. And then he'll insist on popping in his own choice of DVD (since the lowest shelf has 30 kiddie titles, he never runs out). So this year we decided to watch DVDs only on a Sunday. 1 movie in the morning before our toddler awakes, 2 in the afternoon during his siesta, and 1 late at night after he's tucked in. That amounts to 4 DVDs per week, which is a good average. All in a single day. Ah, the fruits of time management.
-
i don't have the time to watch dvd. there's always something to miss on tv or something you have to do..10pm news, 11pm seinfeld, 1130pm simpsons, 12-1am voyager - how could you miss those shows?
i tried to watch the whole season 1 of the sopranos this memorial weekend but managed only the first 2 discs staying up till 430am.
-

Four in one day, each week! Sounds like you two really have your stuff together, DVDgurl and Firewired.
Of course...
...you have just one toddler...let's see how you manage more...

I watch dvds mostly during summer when tv series are on a break. I don't watch that much since tennis take up too much of my time.
But even when it's not summer, I try to watch at least one dvd every two weeks. When I have coupons from Blockbuster or West Coast (rent 1, get 1 free), I get to watch two. I would usually watch during the most boring night of television ...
-
right now i'm on the 4th month on blockbusters promo of $20 for 30 dvd rentals in a month (1 a day) so i really have to force myself to watch at least 1 dvd a day so i can get the most on the promotion.
out the the 4 months i'm averaging about 24 dvd's a month thus making it like $1.20/dvd... a far cry from their regular rental price of $3.99/dvd

One dvd a day ??? That's a big commitment Bently. Do you give sleeping pills to your kids to accomplish that ? ;D just kidding ...

Do you give sleeping pills to your kids to accomplish that?
Only on Sundays. :D

What's so special about Sunday ? Everyday would have been more fun .. ;D

sleeping pills?....just cough medicine would do the trick right?.... :)
plus...i do not really have to do that, she also has a dvd library of her own so while she's watching her disney or barney dvd's, i get to watch my dvd in the other room ;)

Must be nice to be your neighbor. I can just drop by any night of the week and be assured there's something in your dvd player I/we can watch. Now I am considering moving to IL. Just think of how much money I can save from borrowing your dvds and/or just watching them at your place. And knowing how hospitable Filipinos are, I'm pretty sure I'll be getting free merienda/dinner. So, dvd rentals, electricity and food, that's a lot of savings.. woohoo ! ;D

funny you mentioned that, since bought houses next to me is now on the market, one's a two bedroom townhouse with a single car garrage and the other one is a 4 bedroom townhouse with a 2 car garage and even has a jacuzzi at the back porch.
take your pick..and you would be always welcomed to my house ;)

Yikes ! Now I am afraid to move. What kind of neighbor are you? Your neighbors are leaving in fleet to be away from you !!! Something must be wrong there ... hmmm. ::)
-
a jacuzzi in the back of a porch? wow... that must be big... i thought porches are just 2 seater sports cars....
i just finished watching the 3rd disc of the sopranos.... around 3:30am this morning..
i now have all the time to watch all my dvd's.. as long as i don't sleep...
bada bing...

....i think i have to ease up on the subwoofer
those cracks on the wall are getting big.... ;)
but as to steer this back on topic....
i think it's just time management....
if you can save a few minutes here and there then you can get away in being able to watch a dvd every day,
or..if you have a driver...just get a portable dvd player and watch your dvd's in the car while in the middle of traffic. 8)
-
or..if you have a driver...just get a portable dvd player and watch your dvd's in the car while in the middle of traffic.
Now, that is just an accident (and a possible lawsuit) waiting to happen. ;D
But yeah, I agree that it is only a matter of time management and setting up your priorities.
-

i said if you have a driver.....
like a chauffer, tsuper, pilot, capitan....
just make sure that, you watch your dvd's at the back of the car,boat,plane...since you're driver or chauffer or tsuper or pilot or capitan.... of the vehicle
... might be tempted to gaze on your movie if you seat in front 8)
-
driver ... portable player ... time management ... gotcha neighbor ! ;)

Not only time management but the factor of what DVD to watch is what I consider also.
The noisy concert, sci-fi, or action ones are good during the day on weekends or early evenings like until around 10 p.m. only - baka kasi magreklamo na ang mga kapitbahay. Bitin naman kasi kung hinaan ang sound.
Kung medyo horror or thriller, dapat gabi with the lights off.
Kung Anime, or anything for the kids eh I watch is during weekends with my pamangkins para 1 panooran na lang.
Kung medyo drama, mahirap naman kung too late na in the evening or early afternoon kasi baka makatulog ka naman so dapat late morning or early evening din.

good point.... weddingsinger....
but sometimes you have to be carefull with those anime
since they may also show some nudity like ninja scroll...
-
Correct ka diyan.
That's why I usually ask those who have seen it first kung pwede sa kids, not only for the nudity but the level of violence as well. I was actually surprised when I watched Princess Monoke as I was not expecting the violent cutting of limbs and heads. Good thing my pamangkins watching at that time are teens and are used to watching such kind of Anime.
But for adult Anime, pwede na siya late at night, not much need naman for high volume level, especially for those with stereo option only for English audio.
-
BRO,
ESi okey ba yun? and RobertJ too?
thanx,
vax

Well, it's a matter of setting your priorities. We have to admit that we can't do everything at the same time so you will really have to find time watching DVDs.
I usually watch at least once or twice a week and would start playing not later than 9pm or I wouldn't be able to finish it.
-
Just a food for thought---isn't it lame to be literally Slaves of Technology? That's what my relatives call me. I am in my own sense am happy with my little world which I could just once in a while be after work and from the grind. Just a single song from a concert DVD before going to work while dressing up is a relaxing thing for me. It is a breather, a break from the fast paced cruel world outside. But it seems that there are a lot of things to do for such little time. So you intend to buy a laptop with DVD-ROM (w/c I did) or a portable player just to satisfy the craving to watch your addicting stuff (the nicotine or metamphetamines--in our case DVDs) that raises our senses to its fullest everytime you pop in a disc even on the uncalled for time. The craving is just so intense you just have to let loose and sometimes have to sacrifice a day or two to catch up on your viewing. This is not good...not good...but again happiness is a piece of disc playing machinery and a round silver disc! ;D ;D ;D
-
hmm. i guess i dont have too much of a problem when to watch dvd as I only have no more than 20 movies in my collection (ok ok, 30 if you count the pirated ones) and I make sure I dont buy what I can't watch within 2 days. (",)
-
It's easier for me because my job is based here at home where I got a TV in front of my drawing table. I'd usually watch a movie on DVD that I have not seen before around the time I go to bed, which is around 10pm, then watch it with all my attention until 12, then I go to sleep. The next morning, I turn the disc on again and listen to the commentary while I draw.
Sometimes I just have to make time, if it's a film that I really want to see. When I got Crumb from Charbit, I took 2 hours off from work in the afternoon to watch it. I admit that I can't do that with an office job, but I guess that's why I enjoy my job so much. :)
-
Early in the morning!Around 4:30 in the a.m when everyone is sound asleep. Just me and the dvd.Like KOMIKERO I watch it first with the main track Then later in the evening after work, this time with the commentary on.
-
Well .. sa akin ... after office .. from 4:00pm to 6:00 before news ... nag play ako ng mga gusto kong panoorin ... pero .. sa weekend talaga ako pede ... pero .. lagi ko naman pinapasyal syempre ang esmi at ang little nikki namin .. kaya back to afternoon ulit ako manood :-/
woodie520 ;)

Only then will I have time to savor my dvd's.
-
during weekends naman eh ...yun....dun yung masarap manood...after the chores eh nood na!!! ;D ;D
-
During weekdends and sometimes during my weekday off. :D
-
We usually try to watch our new purchases right away, in reality, we actually get to watch only on weekends. Gets to the point where new purchases sit unopened a few weeks before watching.
Some weeknights too, towards the end of the week when possible.
It seems to be a better joy when you have to sneak watching a DVD than when you can watch it at anytime ;)
-
If only there was enough time in a day to do all the things i want. We (me and the wife) get home around 7:15 after going to the gym. The good thing about living in the province is there is NO TRAFFIC. After having dinner, the wife watches Star Movies mandarin or whatever chinese vcd's or vhs she has rented. I either play on the PC (I have more than 10 games installed since i buy almost every pirated game that comes out) We start watching DVD's at around 9 or 9:30, except for Wednesday which is CSI night, Friday is basketball night or when we go out to the movies.
In addition, I still have lots of magazines (about 8 a month) and books of all kinds that i like to read and also find time to play console games(Dreamcast and PS).

since it's winter again...i now have more time to watch my favorite dvd's...my average right now is 1.5 dvd's a day :)
i get off work at 4:30 pm, get an early dinner at 6:30 watch 2 dvd's and go to bed by 12...

Hmmm.. we must be office mates. I get off work at 4:30 too. And yeah, winter is a good time to watch a lot of dvds especially if you're stuck inside because of snow storms or blizzards.
Just this weekend, in between shovelling snow, I (or we hehehe) watched the football game and 5 movies .. got that ? F-I-V-E movies !!!! How many more snow storm I have to endure ? I don't know .. it's just starting.
-
aside from weekends, usually when the kids are asleep. and kung walang lakad, mga 10pm onwards. 1-2 movies depende kung hindi pa inaantok.
-
Before, i used to watch my dvds around midnight, when i get home from work. Pero ngayon weekends na lang. :o
-
Others watch 30-minute soap operas daily, while I watch 30 minutes off of my DVD movie of the week (no distractions).
-
After work... eat a quick dinner, wash up and then settle down and watch a movie. Sometimes, I just play around with some of the special features of the DVD that I never tried before (yung SW:TPM DVD nde pa nga ako nangangalahati eh...)
And then sa weekends, if I stay home... babad ako sa mga DVDs ko...
-
u guys get off work rather early, here it's 6 or 630. :(
-
Hmmm.. we must be office mates. I get off work at 4:30 too.
i really get off at 3:30...pero i'm just putting a bit of overtime...:-* sip-sip

Watching DVD's is a deliberate endeavor for me as I usually go for the optimum results my HT room can offer, which means picking the right time when unavoidable distractions are kept in check. Just like in the Kenwood radio ad, it should be a time when phone calls, hunger pangs, fidgety kids, and car horn-crazy neighbors are least likely to disrupt the closest thing one can get to an impeccable theater experience.
An observation worth sharing here is that whenever I come to that most ideal viewing condition, an unforeseen factor gets in the way: I always fall asleep in the middle of the movie.
The main cause for this was quite difficult to trace. It was not the movie, because the same result happens be it a drama, a comedy, or an action flick I'm watching. Time factor wasn't it, either, as I've tried watching during the day, but to no avail. And medical findings show that I'm not narcoleptic (http://www.azaleasleepcenter.com/narcolepsy.html), nor have I known myself to have a short attention span.
All I can do right now is put the blame on the HT room itself! The two-seater La-Z-Boy occupying the room's sweet spot is so comfy (especially when reclined) I always doze off on it. Add to that the air-conditioning in full-blast and the lights off. Apparently, my earnest desire to factor in comfort for my viewing pleasure has created for me an environment that is perfectly conducive to, umm, slumber.
Who says DVD addicts don't have profound dilemmas? ;D
But I digress...
PEACE :)
-
bubuyog- Why won't you try coffee and DVD. It is quite a good combination lalo na kung magmamarathon ka. Try eating chips, popcorn or Kopiko to keep awake. Or maybe palitan mo ang lazy boy mo ng bed of nails...siguradong gising at duguan ka.
Seriously, try to take a nap first and when you wake up...DVD kaagad sure yan matatapos mo.
Just an advise. Hehe! ;D

bubuyog,
Like what nirvblakr mentioned, I have observed that whenever I take a long nap(undisturbed), I can watch a movie without falling asleep, (2 movies the most). I watch lying in bed but never fall asleep. This happens usually on "work-free" days. I take a nap around 2 PM, wake up after 2 or 3 hours and I'm ready to go.
The only time I do fall asleep is when I find the movie boring or when I'm really tired.
On weekdays, the only time slot I have is after I get home from the office. It also depends on my mood. But I try to make it a habit to see one movie a day.
-
I used to watch DVD after i get home from work but now only during weekends nalang. That's because Amor Powers, Ina, Angeline and the rest of the gang becomes the favorite TV Soap opera of my wife and daughter....Grrrr >:( ;D ;D
-
just got dumped with 5 inches of snow today
and with more snow overnight, then turning to ice :o...
so i'll be taking a personal day tomorrow :D
and just bury myself in my dvd viewing ;D
hopefully i can find time to my file my taxes too! ;)

I am cursed and blessed that I can watch DVDs at any time of the day. I have a home office( well actually, the bedroom is my office ) and its a blessing coz i get to watch whenever I feel like it, pero cursed, in a way, coz I sometimes get pulled from my "work" and do all my work later.
Yun nga lang, I usually watch DVDs on PC, coz as much as id like to watch it on TV, my daughter would just scream her lungs out if she sees me touching the DVD player and not inserting Barney or Teletubbies or Sesame Street.

Same sentiments here. :( Though you're luckier, Battousai. In my case, My wife and/or I can only watch non-kiddie DVDs when my kid's asleep. Sounds like a fair deal if she sleeps early; but lately she's been sleeping by midnight on average. :'(

Thanks, nirvblakr and lazy_maze, for the suggestions.

He he he. Pareho pala tayo, bartmaniac.
-
got to be on the weekend: no time pag weekdays- after
work is just so tiring, i get knocked out quickly!
-
Once the new DVD bought arrives at home!!!
-
I hardly have time to watch dvds these days. I only get to watch snippets of extra features while having lunch. I guess I'm looking for something to watch other than Eat Bulaga or MIB.
Have to start watching those Woody Allen dvds; maybe I'll start with Sleeper.
-
When my wife and my son is at my biyenan.....ehehehehe...saka lang ako nakakapanood..with no distraction..and full volume....
-
We usually watch during the weekends but occasionally in the evenings during the week. I also try to watch with my wife and our baby isn't old enough to insist what he wants to watch.
-
I usually watch nowadays my DVDs on my 5.1 channel set-up right after arriving from work. Just pop-in the DVD and for sure before dinnertime, tapos na ako ng isa.
Then, after dinner, I pop-in another disc sa bedroom naman kaso 2 channel lang coz the wife doesn't want numerous speakers in the bedroom lalo na ang subwoofer. So we usually watch some love story or something like that which puts me to sleep.
-
pag trip kung manood lalo na bago ang movie and i did not get to see it in the theatre! ;)
-
with the beatiful summer weather weve been getting lately....i've been slacking on my dvd viewing... :-\
babawi nalang ako pagdating ng winter! brrrrr! :D

Bently- Unlike before, brownouts are seldom experienced during the rains. If ever there is, it would only last for like 10 mins then...tuloy ang ligaya! ;D

nirv,

I normally watch sa mga weekends or sometimes pag weekdays after work, I pop in one DVD and go to the scene index and just watch some of my more favorite moments in the DVD. But normally, I've been spending too much time playing FFx and WarcraftIII... :(
-
usually on weekends pag walang magawa and when i get home early from work. 8)
-
kung kelan lang may time. weekdays, weekends, pati hating gabi when i get home. i hardly get to watch them in one sitting. usually in 3 parts pa kasi inaantok na ako. and when i watch in the middle of the night i couldn't turn up the volume kasi baka magising ang ibang tao sa bahay... >:( :(

Make sure you have an AVR para di bumigay ang HT equipment mo with the power fluctuations. ;D

Very seldom do I watch DVDs with the movie all the way through with the special features. Usually I watch the movie early like in the afternoon and the special features before I go to sleep.
-
i try as much as possible to view the feature films in one go. the commentaries (if any) i usually reserve for another time, usually months after viewing the feature. by that time, the movies come out fresh (again). however, i find that there are dvds which irresistably merit viewing, special features and all, in one seating. all of kurosawa's films have this effect on me. you can just imagine what happened when i obtained 7 samurai. egat, the film is almost 4 hours long!
-
I usually find the time to watch around 11:30 in the evening hanggang 2 in the morning.
-
Madalas pag Friday night, around 10:00 or so hanggang matapos na. Maybe up to madaling araw na, wala namang pasok next day. Then do the same thing Saturday night till Sunday dawn. Yun lang, dahil sa I want to spend the weekend with my two sons... ;)
-
;D ;D ;D
Used to be during the weekends...pero ngayon hindi na masyado...I only find time to watch DVD kapag tulog si Baby Cid and yung papanoorin ko eh gusto rin ni Misis!!
;D ;D ;D
-
i really love my new portable sony dvd player, now i get to see my movies where ever we go!...at the park, in the garage, patio, airport..etc. and ...it really make those long plane rides just fly by (no punn intended) :D
-
between 11:30pm to 4:00am... la na kasing istorbo at mas maganda ang tunog ng HT sa ganitong oras...
-
I've revived my laptop with a DVD Rom so when I go on duty whenever there's no operation, I set up my Laptop with just 2 computer speakers and then watch until work disturbs me. So far it has helped me in not watching TV, not reading the newspapers, not being sociable and eating meals inside the quarters with a locked door para walang istorbo. I am becoming a hermit with this damn PC with DVD Rom. This is not good...not good! >:(
-
Weekends lang dahil walang work. Pero kapag gabi ako nanood, kailangan silent mode dahil tulog na si misis and ang baby. that's why the subtitles are very useful for me. Yun nga lang, di ko nae-enjoy yung sound, imagine, i got to watch Tomb Raider and Episode One in silent mode/subtitles only (napanood ko na siya dati sa sinehan kaya ok lang). :P
-
regardless what time... As soon as I pop up the DVD coming from its sealed case.. Man, What timeever.. I immediately play it....

Between 1-3am its the only time I can watch peacefully when no one is around specially my nephews and nieces. I can watch rated-R films without worrying what my Mom would say if she happen to see a sensitive scene.
;D
-
Now that I have a baby, I can't watch my DVDs in the room where my HT is coz it is adjacent to our bedroom where little Iya is. I can watch the movies with headphones but with no thrill. The only way I can watch my movies full blast without anyone bothering me is when the baby is downstairs or if she is in my inlaws house.
I usually watch my DVDs in low volume 2 channel stereo (my setup in the bedroom) kasi gusto ni misis na may mautusan mag timpla ng gatas kaya di ako pwede lumipat sa kabilang kwarto.
I am always choosing between my daughter and my DVDs pero dapat walang contest diba? ???
-
-
If I ever have the urge to do so ;D But then, I always see to it that my wife isn't home, hirap kasi ng may tanong ng tanong everytime na nanonood ka. :)
-
pag medyo maaga ko nakakauwi from office ... :)
-
Thursdays & 2 sundays in a month.

A friendly word of advise so you can have more time to watch DVDs:

I usually watch DVDs on Friday-Saturday-Sunday nights. I usually come home late and I always want to have someone watch a DVD with me so that we can laugh, or cry together. ;D
